Google acquired the photo sharing site, Picasa in 2004. Since then, Google has improved the service by offering excellent usability, updated uploading, sharing, and editing features to touch up your photos.
Similar to Flickr, Picasa also has a desktop feature that will allow you to connect to your account and organize your photos on your hard drive. You can easily pick which photos on your computer that you would like to add to your web-based account.

6. SmugMug

At the point this article was created, Adobe Photoshop CS3 still cost about USD $649 per copy. I think it’s safe to say that not everyone will afford to get a copy or willing to get a copy if all one need to do is just basic image editing stuff.

That’s probably one of the main reason why there’s still a fairly large crowd out there actively looking for free alternatives to Photoshop to help them in their daily basic design jobs. If you are not going into advance image editing, you should know that there’s always free software out there capable to perform what Photoshop can.

Create “Singing Apple” in Photoshop, just follow the tutorial

In this tutorial you will learn how to make an apple, already listen to the music, sing. In order for it to sing it needs to have a mouth. So let’s create a mouth for our music-loving apple!

Take this image with an apple and this one with the mouth and at the end of the tutorial you will have this:

Step 1

Open the image with the apple in Photoshop. Open the second one also. Copy it (Ctrl + A), go to the image with the apple and paste the selection over it. Photoshop will put the selection into a new layer. Lower the opacity of this layer a little – just so you can see the apple – and hit Ctrl + T to make the mouth smaller in order to fit the apple’s form.

Step 2

Take the Pen Tool and select the lips like you see in the images below.

After you’ve selected the outline of the lips press the right mouse button and choose Make Selection. Leave the Feather Radius 0 and press OK. Now you have the selection of the mouth. Go to Select > Inverse. Photoshop will inverse the selection and now the face will be in the selection. Press the Delete key to erase it.

Step 3

Let’s select the mouth again, but this time without the lips.

Copy the selection and then paste it – remember that you don’t have to make a new layer, Photoshop will create one and put the selection there.

Step 4

You can notice that you can’t see clearly what is in the layer’s thumbnail. So let’s make it bigger!
Do like you see in the images below.

And here you can see the difference:

Step 5

Go to the layer with the apple. Take the Eliptical Marquee Tool and select a part of the apple.

Copy the selection, paste it, and put the new layer between the layer with the mouth and the one with the lips.

Step 6

And now, because when I first selected the mouth I hit Ctrl + C instead of Ctrl + Xin order to leave the lips in a separate layer, I have to select the lips again. But there is an easy way to do that.

Hold down Ctrl key and click on the layer’s thumbnail that contains the mouth and the lips. In my case this layer is named “lips” (see the picture above). While still holding down Ctrl key also press the Alt key in order to substract from the selection. And now click on the layer’s thumbnail containing the mouth. When you need to add to selection press Shift key instead of an Alt key.

Make sure the layer with the apple is active (see step 5) and go to Select > Inverse then hit the Delete key.
What you will have is this:

The lips now have apple texture.
And this is what you have so far:

Step 7

Place the layer containing the mouth under the ones with the lips.

Select the layer with the apple texture lips and turn down the opacity of the layer until you can see the real lips through. Take the Eraser Tool, set the Hardness to 0 and start to erase from the outside of the lips, so the outline of the lips becomes invisible.

Step 8

Create a new layer, under the one with the lips, take the Brush Tool, set theHardness to 0 , set the foreground color to black and follow the outline of the lips to give a little depth to the mouth. Take the Eraser Tool and delete where you think it’s necessary.

Result

And this is the final image. The apple is now singing.

Create Avatar movie poster in Photoshop

James Cameron’s movie Avatar needs no introduction. The movie focuses on Navi, which is an indigenous humanoids race who stays on a planet named Pandora. While the TV channels and news portals are all full of praises for the technology used in the production of this film and its virtues, many designers found themselves instilled with great inspiration from the Navi characters after watching the film. So, for all you designers who wish to create such Navi images, the givenPhotoshop tutorial is sure to be of great help. This tutorial elaborates how you can create a Naviimage of any usual photo as you add impressive text and backgrounds to make an Avatar movieposter. Let us begin to see how you can get this amazing Navi photo effect in just 8 easy steps

Final Preview

1.Step: Preparation

Firstly, open a new document: 1000 *700 px. Drag to document your photo. Here we use the photo of a girl to achieve the desired effect.

Delete background from the image using the Pen tool. Next, take Blur tool and soften the lips of the girl.

2.Step: Navi face lines

This is one of most important steps. So, make sure you get it right as we will now create specific Navi face lines. To do this, we will use Liquefy filter. Go to Filter -> Liquefy. It is suggested to set the brush pressure at not more that 50%. Only 2 tools need to be used here – primarily, Forward warp tool and at certain places, Bloat tool. So, let us begin. Take Forward warp tool and with easy strokes from nose, middle pull to both sides as given in the picture below:

After you are through with this, take Bloat tool and make the eyes of the girl a little bigger than its usual size. Now is the time to experiment a little with Liquefy filter. Once you have got impressive result, take Burn tool and darken the nose from both sides and use Dodge to lighten the nose from the middle. This should give you a result that looks like this:

Do not worry if you are unable to achieve the perfect results. Keep on experimenting until you get it right. Now add Adjustment layer (Curves), to define the face couture of the girl with more exactness. Set Curves parameters like below:

3. Step: Navi Skin

In this step, we will transform human skin into Navi. As you all must be aware, Navi skin is blue. So, for this, we will add one more Adjustment layer. This time it would be Hue/Saturation. Select the following parameters:

Add Layer mask to Hue/Saturation layer. Now, select the black colour and delete blue colour from the girl’s eyes. Here is result:

I also added Crocodile skin texture for this work. You can download it from Deviantart. Simply add this texture to your document. While holding the Ctrl button, click on layer with girl’s couture and make active Crocodile skin layer. Go to Select -> Invert and click delete bottom. Change blending mode to Overlay and set Opacity to 50%.

4. Step: Navi eays:

At this time, we are almost through with the creation of Navi skin. Now, we will make the eyes of the girl even more impressive. For this, we need to create a new layer. Take Elliptical Marquee tool and draw circle on one girl’s eye. Push Ctrl button and draw circle on second eye of the girl. Now, with these selections, add white colour and set Blending mode to Overlay. I also added clouds to both the eyes. Create a new layer, add clouds texture to your document. Hold the Ctrl button and click on layer with white circles (you will get selection). Now, Invert selection (Select -> Invert) and click delete button and change Blending mode for this layer to soft light. Here is what you must have now:

5. Step: Navi skins details:

You may remember from movie, Navi have some dark lines on their skin. In this step, we will create those lines, using lines ornaments. You can simple go to my article about 200 tribal tattoo designs, find ornament that you like and add it to your document. After this, while holding Ctrl, click on layer with ornament and you will have an ornament selection. Delete ornament. Fill your selection with dark blue colour: #384c9c and go to Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian blur and select about 10-15px. Add your ornament to some part of girl’s face. Now repeat this step 4-8 times, till you have something like this:

6. Step: Glowing sparkles

We have almost created a Navi girl. Now, we will add glowing sparkles. For that, we will again create a new layer. From brushes pallet, select stars brushes and in Brush tip shape, select spacing about 50%:

Take pen tool and create a line below the eyes of the girl and go to Paths, right click and select Stroke Path, select Brush and click ok. Do not forget to set white colour and brush Hardness to 0. After you have followed this step, repeat it till you have something like this:

For this layer, you can also add Layer style outer glow for an impressive glowing. Here is my

result:

7. Step: Background

After we are through with our creation of a Navi girl, we must add background. For Avatarmovie poster, I think most suitable background is Jungle or war episodes. You can take whatever you like. I Googled for a nice war episode and took a screenshot from Avatar itself and added it

Go to Image -> Adjustments -> Hue/Saturation and select the following parameters:

Create another new layer, fill it with black colour and go to Filter -> Render -> Lens Flare. Select 35mm Prime and 120%. Click ok and change blending mode to screen.

8.Step: Text

In this final step, we need to add text to our movie poster. I found a perfect font for Avatar movie. You can download it at Herculanum fonts from Urbanfonts. Create a new layer and write your text with grey color: #e1dddd.

To this text, add layer style Outer glow with the following parameters:

Finally, we are done with our avatar movie character and poster creation in Photosop. Of course, you may add more text or images in background but I think you got main idea from this tutorial. As you can probably guess after reading this tutorial that transforming an image into aNavi is not a very difficult task. So, you also get started and create your own Navi images and Avatar posters. How to create Glass Surface Water Drop Animation

Start by opening an image of a glass.

Create an ellipse using elliptical shape tool.

Reduce the opacity to 20%.

Ctrl+Click the layer thumbnail to get the selection. From select menu apply modify>>contract. Contract the selection by 1 pixels. Create a new layer and apply a black to white gradient in linear mode.

Change the layer mode to screen.

Merge both the layers. Press Ctrl+T. Right click the layer and select warp. Adjust nodes to get the shape as shown.

Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Change the layer mode to screen and reduce the opacity to 51%.

Create several duplicates of the drop. Press Ctrl+T and distort. Place as shown in the image below.

Open animation window. For the first frame hide all thedrop layers except the top drop layer.

Duplicate frame and hide the first drop layer. Unhide the next drop layer. Similarly hide unhide the layers to create a falling drop effect.

For the last frame hide all the drop layers. Adjust delay durations as shown in the image below.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S to save an optimized animated GIF.

How to create “Home Sweet Home” Graphic

Start by typing “home” using a bold font.

Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Create a rectangle using rectangular shape tool. Press Ctrl+T. Right click the layer and select perspective. Adjust nodes to create a roof top.

Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Create some horizontal and vertical lines using line tool. Fill the roof top with such lines to give an illusion of bricks.

Select and merge all the line layers. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Duplicate the layer and press Ctrl+F to reapply the filter.

Similarly create wall of the home.

Create a rectangle for the chimney using rectangular shape tool. Press Ctrl+T. Right click the layer and select distort. Adjust nodes to get the shape as shown. Create bricks over the chimney too.

Create a rectangle using rectangular shape tool and place it at the bottom.

Create two rectangles with different colors. Move these layers below all the layers in layer order in layer palette. Place them as shown.

Create triangular shape using polygon shape tool.

Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Create some flower and leaf shapes using custom shape tool. Place them as shown.

Create a horizontal and vertical line and place it for the window. Using ellipse tool create a circular handle of the door.

Create an ellipse using elliptical shape tool. Fill it with blue color.

Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Create a horizontal line using line tool.

Type sweet home over this line.

Fill the background with black color.

Select and merge all the layers except background layer. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Creating a Silver Alien Orb

1. Create a new document. Fill in the background with black. Then go to Filter > Render > Lense Flare. Use the 50-300mm Zoom. Repeat this four times in the locations indicated below.

2. Go to Filter > Artistic > Plastic Wrap. Use these settings below.

3. Resulting image below.

4. Go to Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates. Be sure to go from rectangular to polar.

5. Now change the hue / saturation by going to Images > Adjustments > Hue / Saturation. Use the settings below. Be sure to note that we did NOT check the Colorize box.

6. Now go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness / Contrast. Change the settings until you get a similar image to that below. And when you are finished, you will have a VERY attractive silver orb.

7. But we know that silver is a cool color, there are other good looking orbs too. Below are other versions of the tutorial that use different colors and brightness / contrast settings. Look below.

8. Below is a fiery version. These variations go to show that you can get many different results from the same tutorial. All of them look amazing!

Animated Banner for Florist Site

Start by creating a file of banner size.

Insert an image of flowers.

Create a rounded rectangle using rounded rectangle shape tool. Reduce the opacity to 80%.

Insert a cutout of a flower.

Insert another cutout and place on the left side of the banner.

Type company name over the rounded rectangle.

Type other text details in separate layers.

Click add vector mask from the bottom of the layer palette

Create a rectangular selection using rectangular marquee tool. Press Ctrl+Alt+D to feather the selection. Click the mask thumbnail. Fill the selection with black color. Repeat this steps for the other two text detail layers.

Insert some small flowers.

Open animation window. For the first frame hide the three text detail layers.

Duplicate frame. Move the small flowers to the right. Move the mask of the first text layer to the right so that it’s completely visible.

Click tween button form the animation palette. Apply settings as shown.

Duplicate the last frame and hide the small flower layers for this screen.

Repeat the above steps for rest of the text detail layers.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S to save an optimized animated GIF.

Start by creating a new file. Select black as foreground and white as background color.
From filter menu select "Render>>Clouds".

Press Ctrl+L to open level settings. Apply settings as shown.

From "Filter" menu select "Stylize>>Emboss". Apply settings as shown.

Select magic wand tool and set the "tolerance" value to 10 on the options bar at the top. Click on the the gray flat areas.

Press Ctrl+J to copy paste the selection in a new layer. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply settings as shown.

From layer menu select "new adjustment layer>>hue/saturation". Apply settings as shown.

Open an image an apply the same effect on the walls.

Creating a Web Page Header in Photoshop

The most important graphical element of any website is its header image. It's the image that will be seen more than any other on your web site, so it's important to get it looking good.

This tutorial gives an example of how to use Adobe Photoshop to make a graphical header image for your web page, that has some button functionality too.

1 – Creating some curves with the Freeform Pen Tool

Open Adobe Photoshop and make a new image. Set the image's width to the width you'd like your header to be on your web page.

Hold down on the Pen tool, and select Freeform Pen. Draw a small line. (Make sure you have the "Paths" option at the top left of the screen selected.) You can hold down Ctrl and drag the points around, or you can manipulate a single point by dragging its "arms". Remember to always hold down Ctrl while you do it.

Use curves liberally in your web pages. A number of factors, including the easy use of tables, has made modern web design very straight-edged. By using curves in your pages, you can give your page a much more organic feel.

2 – Manipulating the Path

Hold down Ctrl and drag one point to each side of your image. Drag the arms away from the points to make the curves more gradual. To see outside the canvas, you may need to maximise the window you're working in, or zoom out (Ctrl -).

3 – Extending the Path

It's important that you form a whole shape with the Freeform Pen tool. Simply creating a line isn't enough.

Without pressing Ctrl, click on the line just next to the leftmost point. This will create a new point. You can then drag the leftmost point up above the top of the image as shown.

4 – Creating a full circuit

Repeat the process, by clicking just below your highest point, to make a new point and then moving your highest point way over to the right.

5 – Creating a selection and filling it with the Paint Bucket

Right click your line (you must right-click a part of the line that's inside your image.) Click Make Selection. This connects the last point on your line to the first point. (In Adobe Photoshop 5.0, you may have to right-click again and click Turn off Path, to make the line go away. In Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and Adobe Photoshop 7.0, it's automatic.)

Make a new layer, select a colour, click on the Paint Bucket tool, and fill the selected area.

6 – Creating a shadow and bevel

Right click on your layer, and select effects (Adobe Photoshop 5.0) or Blending Options (Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and Adobe Photoshop 7.0). Give the layer a Shadow and an Inner Bevel.

7 – Making an uneven Gradient

Click on the Gradient Tool. Then click on the visual representation of the gradient.

Put in an alternating series of about eight black and white tabs, as shown, and click Ok.

8 – Applying the Gradient

Create a new layer. If the blue area isn't already selected, Ctrl+Click the layer that the blue area is in.

Click on your new layer in the layer list, and apply the Gradient Tool across it. Change the layer from Normal to Overlay.

9 – Choosing a colour and texture

Press Ctrl+D to deselect your selection. Click on your blue layer again. Press Ctrl+U to bring up the Hue/Saturation properties. Play with the sliders until you've got a nice color.

Although Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and Adobe Photoshop 7.0 have special texturing effects, I still prefer the old Sandstone texture. Click Filter > Texture > Texturizer, and choose "Sandstone".

Whenever you make anything coloured in Adobe Photoshop, always play around with the Hue/Saturation Properties (Ctrl+U) to see if you can find a better colour. Don't be afraid to reduce the saturation - your image may look drab at first, but you'll find it will add some realism.

10 – Creating a watermark

Click on your topmost layer in the layers list.

Click on the text tool and type "kj" in Wingdings font, with the colour set to black, and the font size set to 100 or more. Change the layer from Normal to Overlay. This is a simple way of creating some nice swirly watermarks.

You may notice, however, that parts of the watermark extend over the edge of the area and into the shadow.

11 – Cropping the watermark

Right-click on your swirly watermark layer in the Layers list, and Rasterize it. It can now be edited.

Ctrl+Click on your gold-coloured layer to select it. Press Shift+Ctrl+I to invert your selection (this selects the white area) and press Delete.

12 – Creating a button layer

In the layers list, Ctrl+Click on your gold layer to select it. Create a new layer and drag that new layer almost to the bottom of the layers list.
Select a colour (I've chosen orange here) and fill the area with the Paint Bucket.
Select the Move tool and press the down key several times to move the layer downwards.

13 – Making notches with the Freeform Pen Tool

Press Shift+P to switch to the Pen Tool. Make a series of points as shown, simply by clicking to place the points. Photoshop will connect them with straight lines.

14 – Cutting the Selection

Right-click the line you've made, and select Make Selection. Press Delete to cut the selected area, leaving you with these buttons. Press Ctrl+D to deselect the area.

15 – Putting text on your buttons

Using the text tool, put in some black text on each button. With a short amount of text, you can just rotate it slightly (press Ctrl+T) instead of trying to use curve effects on it.

16 – Inserting some header text

Add in some header text, in white. It looks nice as it is, but due to the varying darkness of the header image, some parts of the text don't show up properly.

On the layers list, Ctrl+Click on the gold layer to select it, choose the Selection Tool, then hold Alt and drag the cursor across the top of the selected area, to cut the top off the selection, then do the same for the bottom, leaving just a band.

17 – Making the semitransparent band

Create a new layer at the top of your layer list and reduce its opacity to 30% or as much as you feel is necessary.

With the Paint Bucket tool, fill the area with black.

Save the picture For the Web (on the File menu) as a jpeg with quality 60. In your web page editor, select the Hotspot tool and draw an area over each button to turn them into links.
That's it! :)

layer mode to screen for this layer.

Create an ellipse using elliptical shape tool. Rotate a bit.

Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply settings as shown.

Duplicate the layer and scale down. Remove layer style.

Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply settings as shown.

Ctrl+Click to get the selection. Contract the selection by 3 pixels. Create a new layer. Apply Black to white gradient. Change layer mode to screen for this layer.

Select and duplicate all eye layers. Press Ctrl+T. Right click and select Flip Horizontal and place on the other side.

Create an ellipse using elliptical shape tool. Press Ctrl+T. Right Click and select Warp. Adjust the nodes as shown.

Create a rounded rectangle using rounded rectangle shape tool. Fill with white color and place for teeth.

Select and merge all the teeth layers. Scale down a bit. Press Ctrl+Alt+G to create a clipping mask. By creating clipping mask these teeth will appear to be inside the mouth.

Create eye brow using pen tool.

Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply settings as shown.

Duplicate the layer. Press Ctrl+T. Right click and select Flip Horizontal and place on the other side.

Create fire flames using pen tool. Move this layer below all the layers in layer order in layer palette.

Press Ctrl+L to open level settings. Apply settings as shown.

Creating a Funny Ghost Animation with Photoshop

Create an ellipse using elliptical shape tool.

Press Ctrl+T. Right Click and select Warp. Adjust the nodes to get the shape as shown.

Enable add to shape area from the top bar. Create “Blob 1″ shape using custom shape tool.

Duplicate the path. Press Ctrl+T. Right click and select Flip Horizontal and place on the other side.

Enable “subtract from shape area” at the top bar. Create some ellipses using elliptical shape tool.

Create mouth of the ghost using pen tool.

Create a random shape using pen tool.

Duplicate the layer. Press Ctrl+T. Right click and select Flip Horizontal and place on the other side.

Open animation window. For the first frame hide the duplicate layer.

Duplicate frame. Move the ghost layer to the right edge as shown.

Click tween button from animation window. Apply settings as shown.

For 8th frame hide this layer and unhide the duplicate layer. Duplicate frame and for this 9th frame move the ghost to left edge. Now tween the frames as explained above.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S to save an optimized animated GIF.
