Hawaiian jewelry manufacturer, Designs 'N Gold, will participate in Flag Day Ceremony on board the USS Missouri on Sunday, June 13, 2010 sponsored by the Hawaii Elks.

The Hawaii Elks will celebrate again, for the eleventh consecutive year, its annual National Flag Day Service in a joint Hawaii-Lodge ceremony onboard the USS MISSOURI (BB63) at Ford Island in Pearl Harbor on June 13th at 1:00 p.m.

The Elks Flag Day Committee has made arrangements with the USS MISSOURI Memorial Association, Inc., for use of the 'Mighty Mo' for this national patriotic program. The MISSOURI staged the surrender proceedings in Tokyo Bay to end World War II. In our own State of Hawaii, the MISSOURI is now a striking symbol of American freedom and patriotism at historic Pearl Harbor, moored in a line-up with the USS ARIZONA Memorial.

Flag Day was started in 1907 by the Order of Elks to be observed by each Elks Lodge. Then in 1947 the President of the United States, President Harry Truman, a member of the Elks himself, by Executive Order declared the Elks Flag Day of June 14 to be an annual National Flag Day on June 14. On August 3, 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress further proclaiming June 14 as an annual National Flag Day.

For listening enjoyment the Commander, United States Pacific Fleet, Navy Brass Quintet will provide a lively patriotic tribute to our Flag and our military services. Boy Scout Troops will present an array of historic flags and serve as ushers in a ceremony conducted by Past Exalted Rulers and Officers of the five Hawaii Elks Lodges.

Hawaiian Jewelry Manufacturer Introduces Its New Hawaiian Quilt Design Jewelry Line

Hawaiian jewelry manufacturer and online retailer, Designs N Gold, introduced today their new Hawaiian quilt jewelry line using Hawaiian quilt designs created by Hawaiian women in the 1800's. These new Hawaiian quilt jewelry designs are available in sterling silver and gold. The line includes bracelets, rings and pendants.

For Generations the women of Hawaii hand quilted patterns made of tropical plants and island flowers, arranged into a pattern which is usually quilted on fabric. Before the first contact with the white man (haole), the Hawaiians were making a type of Quilt called a Kapa, which was made of fabric pounded from the bark of the Wauke (paper bark or mulberry) tree. While having one of their "sewing bees" in the shade of the Breadfruit tree, the shadow cast by the tree inspired the Hawaiians to create the first "Hawaiian Quilt" by cutting out the design seen in the shadow, from one large piece of fabric. The Hawaiians blended the traditions of their past with these new lessons to develop the unique style of cutting the design from a single piece of fabric. The pattern was then appliqued onto another fabric to create the quilt top. The quilting was stitched "echo style" following the contour of the design throughout the quilt, like ripples on the water which surrounded the islands. The Hawaiians found inspiration for their designs in the beautiful garden islands where they lived.

My Dear Friend Minerva Keawe

Many years ago, my husband John and I traveled to the outer Hawaiian Islands (off Oahu) to produce jewelry shows. The outer islands, as they are known, were then not built up as they are today and there were few jewelers on the outer islands that offered Hawaiian Heirloom Jewelry and those that did asked very high prices. As a Hawaiian jewelry manufacturer we could offer people much lower prices directly from the manufacturer.

We traveled to all the outer islands, Kauai, Maui, the big island of Hawaii, Lanai and Molokai several times yearly. I always enjoyed traveling to Molokai because we would hold our jewelry show in Kaunakakai where my friend Renee Ainoa owned a general store. We would display our Hawaiian jewelry samples in Renee’s store and service her customers. In those days Hawaii still had sugar and pineapple plantations and when the whistle would blow indicating it was time for lunch, the women plantation workers would come to Renee’s store to see the new Hawaiian jewelry samples that we had brought with us.

One of her customers was an elderly Hawaiian lady named Minerva Keawe. Minerva would come to buy from Renee’s general store and occasionally buy a piece of Hawaiian jewelry as a gift for her children and grandchildren. Afterwards she would sit with Renee and me and talk about the Hawaii that she remembered. On some of her visits she would prepare lunch and bring it for us all to enjoy. I always enjoyed visiting with Minerva and she and I became quite close. On one visit to Molokai, Minerva told me that she was going to give me a Hawaiian name when we visited Molokai again.

On our next visit Minerva came to our jewelry show and while we were speaking she presented me with a piece of paper which on it she had written the Hawaiian name that she gave me. The name was “Kou u’i mino aka” which Minerva explained means the “beauty of your smile”. It was such a nice and wonderful gesture on her part and I cried with joy.

Later, my husband knowing how much the Hawaiian name that Minerva gave me meant to me, made me a Hawaiian bracelet with “Kou u’i mino aka” engraved on it for Christmas. I’ve treasured it ever since.

Minerva passed away shortly after giving me my Hawaiian name. I think of her often, missing our visits with each other and each time I wear my Hawaiian bracelet bearing the Hawaiian name “Kou u’i mino aka” I always think of our visits to Molokai and my dear friend Minerva Keawe.

Designs N Gold, a Hawaiian jewelry manufacturer based in Honolulu has announced its new process to turn Japanese family crest into pendants, rings, bracelets and other items of jewelry, using the family's traditional Japanese Kamon design.

Kamon was born in the Japanese tradition and cultural climate and is the symbol of a family or a group. In addition, a symbol similar to the family crest is an emblem of national as well as local government bodies including prefecture, city, town and so forth, uniquely designed in consideration of the tradition and cultural background specific to the respective region. Also, religious facilities like shrines, Buddhist temples, various enterprises, educational organizations like universities, colleges, high schools etc. have got their own emblems designed to represent their own tradition and background, and they are regarded as important properties of their own. In Japan, there are as many as 30,000 different family crests. Most of them are images of plants followed by images of animals. It appears that by drawing various images of nature that were seen or used in people's everyday life for usage as decorative articles for clothes, furniture etc. and with the repeated use of such images, gradually it became the family symbol or crest. Designs N Gold Sponsors Appreciation Dinner For Pearl Harbor Survivors

On Saturday, February 6, 2010, at 5:30PM, Designs N Gold, a Hawaiian jewelry manufacturer based in Honolulu, Hawaii in association with the Kailua Elks Lodge will sponsor an appreciation dinner for survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

The dinner will be held at the Kaneohe Bay Yacht Club located at 44-503 Kaneohe Bay Drive in Kaneohe, Hawaii.

Pearl Harbor Survivors attending the appreciation dinner are Herbert Weatherwax and Alfred Rodriques both Members of the Kailua Elks Lodge, Sterling Cale, Harold O'Connor and Everett Hyland. All survivors are Members of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

Two hundred people are expected to attend the appreciation dinner. Dignitaries attending the appreciation dinner are Captain Greg Thomas, Commander of the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, Lester Chang, Director of Honolulu Parks and Recreation Department will be representing Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann. Other invited dignitaries are Hawaii State Governor Linda Lingle and Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye.

Following dinner the attendees will be entertained by The Paradise Sisters and Company who will be performing USO Music from the World War Two period.

Colette Aoki, owner of Designs N Gold and Co-Chair of the event with Kailua Elks Lodge Member, Kalani Rodrigues, is donating special commemorative gifts to the survivors to commemorate the appreciation dinner.

"We are so pleased and excited to be a part of this historic event" commented Colette Aoki, "the youngest of the Pearl Harbor survivors would be 88 years old and several are in their 90's so Kalani Rodrigues (whose father Alfred Rodrigues is a survivor) decided now was the time to honor these American heros".

Designs 'N Gold Helps To Raise Over $10,000 for Hawaii's Children With Speech and Hearing Defects

Designs 'N Gold, a Hawaii based Hawaiian jewelry manufacturer, was thrilled to be a part of this summer's Kailua Elks Lodge annual Major Project Luau. The charity luau, which was held at the Kaneohe Kokokahi YWCA in Kaneohe, helped raise over $10,000 for Hawaiian handicapped children. Designs ‘N Gold was one of the major sponsors for the event and donated various jewelry items that were then raffled off or bid on during a silent auction.

Hawaiian born and raised Colette Aoki, owner of Designs N Gold, is also the Chair of the Kailua Elks Lodge Major Project Committee. She helped organize and arrange for several local businesses to donate goods and services that were auctioned off during the event. They also made sure that the crowd of over 200 people where entertained by local Hawaiian musicians with Hawaiian song and dance.

"It is important that we in the business community do what we can to help children in our community with speech and hearing defects that are not normally covered by health insurance or the government” explained Colette Aoki. "Because if we are able to help these children at a young age then it will help them be more productive and successful as adults."

Kailua Elks Lodge were pleased that Jocelyn Agra was able to attend. Jocelyn, represents the California Hawaii Elks Major Project in Hawaii and is Hawaii’s Major Project speech therapist. “Jocelyn is great! My son, Kaleo, loves her and looks forward to the speech sessions. She is very patient and shows genuine care for my son. She makes it fun for my son to help overcome his speech problems. I really am thankful for the California-Hawaii Elks for providing this to my son and others in similar situations” explained Nan Ahlo who attended the event with Kaleo and her husband Ainsley.

The money will go to the California Hawaii Elks Association Major Project. The California-Hawaii Elks Major Project, Inc., a committee of the California-Hawaii Elks Association, pledges its commitment to addressing the unmet needs of children with disabilities throughout the states of California and Hawaii by developing a program of supporting services to aid these children at no cost to their families and without discrimination.

Caring for your Hawaiian jewelry!

Many of our customers have asked about caring for their Hawaiian jewelry. I've listed here a few ways to keep your Hawaiian jewelry looking bright and shiny as it was when you first received it.

1. Store your Hawaiian jewelry in a clean, dry place.

2. Keep your Hawaiian jewelry in a fabric-lined jewelry case, or in a box with compartments and dividers. If you prefer to use ordinary boxes, wrap each piece individually in soft tissue paper.

3. Don't jumble your Hawaiian jewelry pieces in a drawer or jewelry case. Pieces can scratch each other.

4. Be careful when removing your Hawaiian jewelry to wash your hands. Do not leave your Hawaiian jewelry on the rim of a sink where it can easily slip down the drain. Also, you can forget you took your jewelry off and leave it. A good friend of mine did this. She was heartbroken when she returned to the Airport restroom only to find someone had taken her ring.

5. See your jeweler at least once a year to have your Hawaiian jewelry checked for loose prongs, worn mountings, and general wear and tear.

6. Visit your jeweler every six months to have your Hawaiian jewelry professionally cleaned.

7. By all means remove your Hawaiian jewelry when you are cooking (it drives me crazy when I watch Paula Dean on TV mixing food with her hands with her wedding rings on), gardening or working on the car. (I knew a woman who was a mechanic and she would wear her Hawaiian bracelet when tuning up her car)

8. There are many types of small machines on the market that will clean Hawaiian jewelry in a matter of minutes using high-frequency sound. These machines are called "ultrasonic cleaners" and are available in many different models and prices. They can be a convenient way to quickly clean your Hawaiian jewelry at home.

9. If has been my experience that most jewelers outside of Hawaii are not familiar with the methods for producing Hawaiian jewelry and find it difficult to repair and work on Hawaiian jewelry, (many mainland jewelers have sent Hawaiian jewelry to us to repair for their customers) so I suggest having a Hawaiian jewelry manufacturer inspect your Hawaiian jewelry.
