The Great Campechada In Old San Juan

Through a partnership between various sectors such as the state government, municipal and federal governments, institutions and individuals from diverse artistic disciplines, has developed a cultural event ever presented in the country The Great Campechada.

Joining the celebration of 500 years of the government of Puerto Rico and 200 years after the death of Jose Campeche y Jordan, our first national painter, is the perfect moment to celebrate a major event around his figure.

Added to this is now in the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico exhibits the most comprehensive exhibition has been made on José Campeche y Jordan, under the title "Campeche: Myth and Reality".

The interest generated by this show and the exaltation of the work of who was considered the most important painter of the eighteenth century colonial America, has given way to the initiative to hold the 'Campechada'.

The 'Campechada' will undoubtedly be the most important cultural event of 2011. With the union of 19 entities, public and private, devoted to the arts, culture and conservation, 'Campeche' will take a multidisciplinary collect Old San Juan to return to the era of the 18th century, in which he lived José Campeche and painted.

The music, theater, literature, body art, cuisine, fashion design and, of course, art will be represented through the streets and most emblematic of the old city, where he spent all his life.

Who was Jose Campeche

José Campeche (December 23, 1751–1809), born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is the first known Puerto Rican visual artist and considered by many as one of the best rococo artists in the Americas.

Campeche was born to Tomás de Rivafrecha y Campeche (1701–1780), a freed slave born in Puerto Rico, and María Jordán y Marqués from the Canary Islands. Because of this mixed descent, he was identified as a mulatto, a common term during his time. Campeche's father was a restorer and painter of religious statues and had an early influence on the younger Campeche's interest in the arts. He was trained by Luis Paret y Alcazar, a Spanish court painter banished from Spain.^[1]

Campeche distinguished himself with his paintings related to religious themes and of governors and other important personalities. His most famous paintings are:

Puerto Rican society of the times appreciated Campeche's personal and artistic merits. He is considered among the most gifted rococo artists in the Americas. Campeche's works of art can be found today in museums, churches and private collections in Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Campeche died in the city of San Juan on November 7, 1809.^[2]

There is a José Campeche room located in the former Dominican Convent in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico where some of his works can be seen and appreciated by the general public. This building is currently being renovated and will be reinaugurated as the National Gallery of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico has schools and avenues named after Campeche to honor his memory. The José Campeche High School is located in San Lorenzo. Manuel Gregorio Tavarez composed a funeral march "Redención" in Campeche's honor. Puerto Rico's greatest graphic artist Lorenzo Homar also created a work of art commemorating Campeche. He is buried at the San José Church in Old San Juan.^[2]

Yanni At The Morro In Puerto Rico

Yanni will give two concerts on 16 and 17 December at the Castillo San Felipe del Morro in San Juan de Puerto Rico. El Castillo San Felipe del Morro is a sixteenth century Spanish fort that for many years monitored the entrance to the bay of San Juan and protected the city from attacks by sea. The "nose" is a term used to refer to a soil or rock used to observe a place. This fort is part of the National Historic Site San Juan and was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations in 1983.

The concert will be broadcast on Public Broadcasting System (PBS) to an estimated audience of 100 million people. The event will be recorded on CD and DVD for the next album.

"I'm very excited. Puerto Rico has long been in my heart. Show up at El Morro is something that my friend Joe and I talked for many years and we leave it as a dream. We think that when given the proper time would be done. That day came last year when they asked me if I presented at a monument in Puerto Rico and El Morro. It takes a long time to plan a concert like this, "said Yanni. "When you record, immortalize. The concert is forgotten five years, one year, a month later. But if you shoot it lives forever. It is very important for me to do a good job in Puerto Rico, where I have many friends and because I love the island, "he said.

On Thursday, November 11, 2010, the famous Greek pianist, Yanni Chyssomallis, delighted an audience eager to hear your tunes in the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, José Miguel Agrelot. The concert began at 9:00 pm with plenty of audience leaving demonstrated the roots of this pianist on the island.

Dressed entirely in black greeted the audience with a huge smile and opened the concert with an orchestra composed of over a dozen musicians. He played "Santorini" but not before addressing those present saying in Spanish: "HELLO SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO ... HELLO HOW ARE? I AM VERY HAPPY TO BE IN PUERTO RICO AGAIN, ESPECIALLY IN THE CITY OF SAN JUAN ", and continued speaking in English after being applauded by their expressions as well maintained.

The concert was very varied. Yanni reflected through it a great emotion and experience. Note that in addition to music is a composer, producer and musical director. Gender meets orchestral, instrumental and lyrical perfection. And the concert was shocking moments in which they left on the orchestra's musicians as Mary Simpson's violin, the Paraguayan harpist, Victor Espinola and drummer Charlie Adams, who was wearing a shirt with the logo of "Puerto Rico" and caused a stir when the screen got it.

Yanni for two hours, delighted his loyal fans in three pianos playing 21 pieces masterfully. From dueling violins to two beautiful girls sopranos, melodies piece caused a stir from the traditional to the more moves in which the audience clapped, danced and did not stop to Yanni show the great success of the Puerto Ricans enjoyed for many years. Some of his melodies were "Felitsa, Acroyali, Desire, Harp Solo, If I could tell you, Ode to Humanity, Within attraction, The storm, Niki Nana and Nostalgia".

After three false starts, sang "One man's dream" and said goodbye to his audience by saying in Spanish, "THANK YOU PUERTO RICO, I LOVE YOU, NEVER FORGET" with a Puerto Rican flag resting on his shoulders, and English promised to return the next year to complete plans for a concert maybe in the Morro. Simply spectacular presentation of this gentleman born in Kalamata and beloved in Puerto Rico.

Movies Review – Year of The Fish: A Cautionary Cinderella Fairy Tale

Tired of all the horror movies that dominate ‘what to watch’ lists nowadays (and trust me, there are far more slice-and-dice’ films that ‘slice-of-life’ ones) I opt for an obscure (to me) movie called Year of the Fish. The film is a Chinese variant of the fairy tale Cinderella.

The Year of the Fish is based on a ninth century version of the classic fairytale. It stars Tsai Chin, the actress from Joy Luck Club, and Randall Duk Kim from The Matrix Reloaded.

Year of the Fish is an adult fable told thorough a magical carp. The main character Ye Xian, a Chinese immigrant who is a modern-day indentured servant who is forced to work at a massage parlor to pay off what she owes to the proprietor Mrs. Su.

Mrs. Su is a spiteful person, and when Ye Xian refuses to give a customer a massage upon learning that it’s a full-service parlor, Ye Xian is put to work scrubbing floors, cleaning toilets and preparing meals for Mrs. Su and the other girls.

In Chinatown Ye Xian meets a blind hunchback who gives her a good luck fish. She is kindly toward the fish, but when it grows too large for its container Ye Xian takes it to a fountain pond and sets is free.

A few days later when Ye Xian returns from an errand she sees that the meal has already been prepared and she sits down to eat. She discovers that the ‘fish’ on the menu is the magical carp.

Ye Xian’s fairy godmother has been known to eat little children

She saves the bones of the fish, and her act of previous kindness toward the fish endears her to an old blind woman, Auntie Yaga (A witch inspired by the Baba Yaga stories.)

Auntie Yaga is truly a scary character--if she does not like you or if you ask her too many questions she may kill you--but Ye Xian is spared because of her good heart (and the fact that she asks her only three questions) and so auntie Yaga becomes her guide rather her antagonist.

Auntie Yaga gives Ye Xian a beautiful blue dress made from tear drops and tells to wear it at the New Year’s dance. Ye Xian goes to the where Johnny is playing. Johnny is the young man who protected her after being chased by gang members in Chinatown.

Johnny sees her at the dance and gets off the stage so he can dance with her. .

When the dance is over, she surprises Johnny by quickly leaving the dance. Johnny does not know where to find her. A few days pass and one of his friends’ say they saw her at the message parlor.

Johnny finds her in a back room covered with soot----that is to say, ‘dirt’. They kiss and before you can say Auntie Yaga they are married.

And so Ye Xian and Johnny live happily ever after. Well, they live as happily ever after as they can--- in an updated fairytale that draws on the Cinderella story and the Baba Yoga fable—and the movie ends.

Addendum: The Year of the Fish is written and directed by David Kaplan. Kaplan uses the animation technique called Rotoscoping. Rotoscoping is where animators trace over live-action film movement, and the result is an almost surreal movie experience.

Although the technique has been around since 1915 (invented by Max Fleischer), it is now being done for some television spots. The Charles Schwab commercial “Talk to Chuck” is an example of Rotoscoping.

With the Cookie's handwriting recognition, you can write and draw on messages or background pictures taken with the phone's camera, as well as send text messages without even using the virtual keyboard.
