Scallop Curtains (Tutorial)

We haven't had real curtains in our living room since we moved to North Carolina...about a year ago. For a year we've just had these netted curtains we bought from Ikea up on our window. I finally decided to do something about it.

I love how sweet and soft the scallops look on the curtains. So pretty! I love them!

Wanna make some? Okay!

I bought some really nice curtain panels from TJ Maxx (shown below). These were my main fabric; this is what I sewed my scallops on.

Then I used some sheer curtain panels I bought from Ross and the original netted curtains from Ikea (shown below). These are what I used for the scallops.

Okay! This is a simple process, just repetitive. I grabbed a small plate, a ruler, and a pen. I used the plate to make half circles on the sheer & netted fabrics. You need two sets of scallop rows for each scallop layer (ie I cut one scallop row from the sheer AND the netted.)

Then I pinned the scallops together and sewed the scallops up, without sewing the very top. After you sewed them, clip the curves of the scallops so that when you turn then right side out, they'll lay flat.

Once you turn them right side out, attach to the curtain panels in layers, overlapping the scallops. For the very top I added ribbon to hide the yucky top that was visible. I also sewed up the sides of the curtains and trimmed off any excess scallop material.

Then you'll have some pretty, layered scallops!!

I had a very wonderful friend come and visit me last week. I was surprised and excited that she was traveling from across the country to see me!

I wanted to make her feel extra special when she came.

My hubs and I gave her the master bedroom. Waiting for her on the bed when she came in was this guest gift basket!

It's the perfect way to make ANY guest feel welcome!

She loved her guest basket! And I LOVED giving it.

Basket Items:

- Lucky magazine

- Razor

- Bath fizzy

- Body wash

- Nail polish

- Chocolates

-Loofah

- Socks

- Shave cream

- Cookies

So much fun! And... I'll be having MORE guests in the next couple of months, so I'll be able to reuse this idea over and over!

I also embellished the pillowcases to make them look extra special. I added a strip of fabric and a ruffle down the edge. Pulling out all the stops for my awesome guests!

Annnnd... I embellished my white board for her, too. Love my guests!

Spring Chalkboard Wreath & GlitzBandz Winners!

I am SO ready for spring! I want to wear shorts and capris and go to the park...

So in anticipation of spring I made this fun wreath. PLUS, I made a little chalkboard to go on it, for a fun little message! And I'm including a SUPER easy tutorial so that you can make YOUR own mini chalkboard!

Here were my supplies for my whole wreath:

- Felt (spring colors for spring!)

- Wreath (I had already wrapped mine in yarn)

- 4 Wood popsicle sticks, or craft sticks

- Paint, to match

- Chalkboard vinyl

- Cereal box (or just some cardboard)

- scissors

- glue gun

I'm only doing a tutorial for the mini chalkboard. If you want a tutorial for the felt flowers, go HERE.

Okay, for the chalkboard, I used two full length popsicle sticks and then broke the other two at about 3/4 length. Then I painted them, like so.

Once they were dry I glued them with my glue gun to form a rectangle.

Next, I used my cereal box to cut out a rectangle big enough to fit on the back of my frame.

Once your cardboard rectangle is cut out, it should look like this. But don't glue them together yet! You need to add your chalkboard!!

Add chalkboard vinyl to cardboard rectangle. Glue to back of frame. Attach it to the wreath (I attached mine with matching yarn.)

Ta-da! Isn't it lovely! And oh-so-springy?!

Cheesiest Lasagna

I know... I don't put up very many recipes. You know why? I'm not the best chef. I'm okay but I'd rather sit in front of a sewing machine than the stove.

However, every time I make this lasagna, I get TONS of comments. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

You HAVE to try this recipe out. It's classic & delish.

Cheesiest Lasagna (adapted from Kraft)

1 lb. regular sausage

1 jar spaghetti sauce

1 egg, beaten

1 container of cottage cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

9 lasagna noodles, cooked & drained

2 cups mozzarella cheese

Heat oven to 375. Brown sausage & drain off any excess fat. Stir in spaghetti sauce; simmer 5 mins. Remove from heat.

Mix egg, cottage cheese, and Parm cheese; spread 1/2 cup onto bottom of 9x13 pan. Top with 3 noodles then 1 cup cottage cheese mixture, then 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, and 1 cup of spaghetti sauce mixture. Repeat layers. Top with lots of mozzarella and Parm cheese.

Bake 30 mins.

Revamped Coat Hanger

You may, or more than likely may not, remember when I repainted this coat hanger from Goodwill:

Yikes. Just...yikes.

I never loved it but it took me a while to paint it, so I kept it for a while.

I finally did something to it and I am so glad I did!

So. Much. Better.

Seriously, there are 3 steps.

Sand down the old paint.

Spray paint it your desired color. I wanted an antique white.

Sand down edges and add chalkboard labels! That's it!

So much lighter and prettier! And it was so easy!

Last-Minute Sweetheart Tee

My mother-in-law sent us a fun package the other day with LOTS of Valentine goodies. Included in the package was a little turtleneck tee and ribbons. My mother-in-law wanted me to make my daughter a fun little Valentine shirt. I was all over that!

With less than a week left until Valentine's day, this would be perfect to quickly whip out for your little Valentine!

Supplies I used:

- Shirt (from Target)

- Ribbon (from Target dollar section)

- Foam heart for a template

- Scissors

- Sewing machine & all necessary accessories

*This shirt couldn't be any easier.*

Trace your heart

Cut ribbons to fit your heart shape. Pin them on and sew them down.

Sew around the heart to give it a more defined shape. And you're done!

Waterproof Snack Bags

A friend of mine recently asked me to make her some reusable snack bags. I think every mom with kids needs reusable snack bags. Think of how many Ziplocs you could save!

We went to Joann's to look for some cute fabric and found adorable PUL from the Babyville Boutique collection.

{What is PUL, you ask? It's the waterproof material used to make cloth diaper covers. It's awesome.}

How cute is that PUL?! This pack costs $15, but you'll get so much out of it! It's a great deal.

Sooo...why did we grab PUL instead of regular fabric? Because PUL is waterproof. And my friend has a one-year-old girl. I think EVERY mama not only needs reusable snack bags, but WATERPROOF reusable snack bags...priceless. Seriously.

Wanna make some? Awesome! Grab your PUL, some zippers, your sewing supplies, and you're ready!

First, cut out two identical squares or rectangles. It all depends on how big you want your snack bags. You have to make sure it's long enough for your zipper length. So if you want your snack bag to be 7x 6, cut your rectangles to be 8 x 7, so that you'll have some seam allowance.

*WARNING* Do NOT iron PUL! Just embrace the wrinkles.

Once you cut out your rectangles, grab your pinking shears {if you don't have some, GET SOME. You'll thank me later.}. Cut the edge that will go next to your zipper. Just do that one first. We'll do the rest later.

Fold over the pinked side and pin it to your zipper {see picture}. Use your zipper foot and sew the fabric to the zipper. Do this to the other side, too.

Your bag should look like the picture below.

Now before we do the next step, you need to unzip the zipper halfway. Like so:

Now, put right sides together, or pretty sides together. Pin it up and sew around the edges.

After you've sewn up the edges, cut them with your pinking shears. Be careful not to cut the stitches you just made!

Turn it right side out and there you have it! A waterproof snack bag!

Love Tile Magnet Tutorial

I have loved seeing all the Valentine's crafts floating around the blogosphere! It just makes me so sad that once Valentine's is over, we'll have to take it all done until next year. I mean, you put all that work into something, you kinda want it to stick around, right?

I was thinking about this and wondering what other sweet things I could do for my hubby (we're already doing the Scratch-off Valentine's Countdown) when I remembered I had a couple tiles just sitting in my craft room, waiting to be used.

I suddenly had the best idea for it...and Valentine's!

(Sorry about the lighting in these photos! I live in an apartment and lighting is very difficult sometimes!)

Love Tile Magnet tutorial

Now you can tell your hubby why/how you love him every day and it can be different each day! And since it's on the fridge, he'll be SURE to see it.

Supplies I used:

- Glue gun

-Tile (from any hardware store)

- Magnets

- Vinyl (you could also totally use cute stickers)

- Not pictured: Fabric, for the fabric flowers

I cut my vinyl on my Cricut but again, you could totally use some cute ABC stickers. I put my "I Heart You" on the top. You could also write "I love you because.." or "I love you more than..."

Next, hot glue some magnets on the back of your tile. Make sure you put enough on to support your tile.

I embellished mine with some sweet rolled fabric flowers but you could add more stickers around the edges or some ribbon bows. Whatever your creative heart desires!

Grab a dry erase marker and get to doodling! He'll LOVE the surprise when he sees it!

Bitty Ruffle Skirt

Barter: (v) to trade by exchange of commodities rather than by use of money

Remember learning about bartering in grade school? I remember taking a toy to school and all the kids got to exchange toys. I remember thinking, "Why don't we do this all the time...but with everything?!"

:)

I know what you're thinking...What does this have to do with ANYTHING?

My friend just had a beautiful baby girl. She is also an amazing photographer. I really want to make my photos look more beautiful, so the other day I text her and asked if we could trade a ruffle skirt for her girl for photo editing skills. She was totally okay with it! I was so excited! Bartering!!

And so was born the Bitty Ruffle Skirt.

I LOVE this fabric. And no, there is no tutorial, but really...just go to Pinterest and type in ruffle skirt. They're really simple to make. Just time consuming. Or you can check out the 8 Ruffle Tutorials I posted about.

I wish I had one for my baby girl! And if my friend doesn't like the tulle on the bottom, she can easily just cut it off! No worries.

DIY Envelopes

Brooke from Babbling Brooke Designs made my blog look SO beautiful! I highly recommend her if you're thinking of giving your blog a facelift. She's sooo nice and quick to respond to your questions/concerns. Go stop by and look at her portfolio!

Well, with my son's birthday approaching, I decided I needed to give out his invites, like, NOW! I made super fun invitations but I didn't have an envelope for them.

So, of course, I took matters into my own hands.

And I'm happy with the outcome!

Let me run you through a quick tutorial. They're super easy to make!

You need a template. Trace whatever you're going to be putting inside the envelope. You'll then need to draw four flaps around that traced object. Make sure you leave a little room around the traced object so it'll fit once you put the envelope together. For the sides, one flap needs to be wider than the other, so that they will overlap.

Cut out your template and trace it onto your desired paper. (Isn't that invite so fun? I made it myself...with the hub's help!)

Cut out your envelope. Fold over all your flaps before gluing.

Last step: Gluing. Glue along the edge of the wider flap. Smooth the smaller flap on top to adhere the two. Then glue the edge of the bottom flap and smooth that on top of the middle flaps.

And then you'll have a handmade envelope!

DIY Photo Canvas

One of the crafts I've ALWAYS wanted to do was make a photo canvas.

I just have never done it. I'm not sure why (probably laziness). But I finally got all my supplies together, got myself a good tutorial from Pinterest, and I was on my way.

And guess what? It's easy peasy lemon squeezy!

Gather your supplies:

Supplies:

- Mod Podge

- Canvases, whatever size you want. I did 8 x 10. (They were 30% off at Hob Lob)

- Distress Ink & Scrapbook paper, for the sides (however, you can also paint the sides, so whatever look you want to go for).

- Prints (I got mine done at Wal-Mart for $5 a print.)

- Paper cutter or scissors

Okay, I'm not going to go through the whole tutorial because Vanessa at The Crafty Nest did a beautiful tutorial. I just wanted to show you all the supplies you need. Now go follow Vanessa's instructions!

What do you get in the end? Beautiful wall art!
