EarthBox — The Ultimate Container Garden?

So — I love gardening. A bug I caught years ago when my friend rented me a house he and his wife had cultivated a large vegetable garden in. I felt like I should maintain it, replant it and keep it going. It was so much fun and I was able to make such incredible meals out of the tomatoes, zucchini, corn, beans, peppers, pumpkins and melons — I actually refuse to eat some varieties of supermaket produce now (tomatoes especially; they just don’t compete.)

I now live in a place where deer are a constant challenge and planting outside our fenced in area seems like a complete waste of time. Inside the fenced in part of our property its already pretty well landscaped AND I’ve actually found tomatoes and strawberries (all I’m currently working with) to grow great in containers! Both seem like like warm roots and the containers heat up nicely.

Knowing this I went looking for something more than just a pot. I figured all these upside-down tomato growing things I see in SkyMall must have some merit — maybe that was something I should try? Thanks to the power of the internet, I found the EarthBox.

The Earthbox is a self watering, mulching container garden. You set it up, put your plants in and just fill a reservoir of water up periodically. Impossible to over water, if you have 1/2 a clue it’ll be pretty hard to underwater as well. You pre-fertilize the potting mix, so no remembering to feed it or anything — plus it comes with a bunch of Dolomite (HA! HA!) to add calcium to the soil which tomatoes just love.

So I figured I’ll try it. It arrived last week and I plan to get some potting mix and strawberries going with it. I’ve already got 4 containers of tomatoes, but I may order another and put some indeterminate tomatoes in as I made the mistake of going all determinate and heirloom with the ones I’ve already put up.

Anyone have any experience? Earthbox’s forums seem to have a lot of encouraging info.

Beer Review: Sierra Nevada Wet Hop Ale

Talk about taking something too far, Sierra Nevada’s ultimate in their product line of over-hopped, bitter beers is officially the Wet Hop Harvest Ale.

Prior Sierra reviews from me have been none too glowing; I’m not a fan of these heavily hopped American beers. I prefer my malty old German and English beers — but Sierra has a hell of a following. My friends Ryan and James both really like it. As James was over New Years Day, to let our kids bite each other and then watch some football, I thought it’d be great to share it with him and get a real Sierra drinkers take. “Too bitter” was his review, seems this one is even heavy handed for the real hops lovers. I wonder what Ryan will think…

Anyhow, its good — I will say I drank it and it actually tasted better to me than their Pale Ale or the Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ale. I am a Big Foot fan, and it was similar — but without the heavy booze. The booze helps.

Anyways, if you like heavily hopped American “micro” brews — give it a try.

Holiday Gift Idea: The Bacon Press

For some reason I’ve always wanted a Bacon Press. Will it work? How many slices of bacon fit under it? If they are so great, how come Williams-Sonoma never has one when I ask?

These mysteries have plagued me and perhaps it is memories of my bar-mitzvah that hold me back from buying one… has anyone tried a bacon press? Does it really do the job? I have no problem getting thick, crispy pieces of bacon out of the frying pan — but I guess it could be easier.

Cars: Who the heck buys the Merc ML63 AMG?

OK — not a real review, as I refuse to drive this thing — but who the hell spends the money on this Mini-Van looking AMG?

I understand everything Mercedes poured into this ugly monster to make it fast; “the performance SUV” claims Mercedes — but oh my god you look like a tool driving it. Some guy in the Golden Gate Bridge was in front of me in one of these, I had to pull up along-side and see who the hell would spend $95k on 500+HP of ugly. Yup, he was wearing the biggest, gaudiest USB Headset you can imagine on his left (road-noise side) ear: total tool confirmation.

Have any of you driven this? I’m reading 503HP and 0-60 of 4.8. Thats impressive but wouldn’t an M5 seat your family, drive better and look less like a Plymouth mini-van?
