What Parents Should Know About School Safety Today

Parents count on schools to provide a safe environment, yet changing safety policies can create uncertainty in everyday routines. Even small updates can shift what kids bring to school, which can catch families off guard.

What parents should know about school safety begins with staying aware of these changes and understanding the reasoning behind them. When you stay engaged, you can help your child adjust with confidence.

Today’s Safety Priorities

Schools focus on accountability and prevention. Staff want clear sightlines into what students carry and how they move through shared spaces. These priorities shape everything from hallway supervision to backpack guidelines. When parents recognize this shift, school policies start to feel more intentional.

Administrators adjust rules as new concerns surface, and those updates might not always reach families. Staying informed means checking communications, asking direct questions, and paying attention to policy updates throughout the year. That effort keeps you one step ahead.

How Policies Affect Daily Routines

Rules shape how your child moves through their day. Locker use and even classroom transitions reflect these expectations. When something changes, kids feel it immediately, especially if they weren’t prepared for it at home.

You can ease that pressure by walking through routines together. Talk through what they carry and what they might need to adjust. Small conversations at home prevent bigger frustrations once they’re already at school.

What Kids Carry Matters

What goes into a backpack now carries more weight than ever. Schools look closely at how items are stored and accessed during the day. Parents who take a proactive approach help their kids avoid unnecessary issues.

Here are a few practical ways to stay aligned with school expectations:

Review school guidelines on bags, supplies, personal items, and restricted materials

Choose items that allow easy visibility, quick access, and simple organization

Pack only what your child needs for the day, avoiding clutter or extras

Check bags regularly with your child to reinforce awareness and responsibility

Encourage your child to ask questions when they feel unsure about a rule

This kind of consistency builds confidence. Kids stop guessing and start understanding what’s expected of them.

Why Bag Policies Keep Changing

Bag policies spark a lot of questions, especially when schools tighten or adjust requirements. These decisions connect directly to safety goals. When visibility improves, staff can respond faster and maintain better oversight throughout the day.

You might notice more schools discussing alternatives like mesh or clear designs. Questions around what’s allowed tend to come up during policy changes. Understanding how those expectations work in real school settings can clear up a lot of confusion.

Build Confidence at Home

Confidence doesn’t come from memorizing rules. It grows when kids understand why those rules exist and how they apply them daily. When you take time to explain expectations, you give your child a sense of control in an environment that keeps evolving.

Everything parents should know about school safety comes down to staying present. Keep the conversation going beyond the first week of school. Ask what feels different or confusing, and what’s easier over time. Those check-ins turn safety from a list of rules into a shared understanding you build together.

The Intersection of Grit & Glamour: How Detroit is Redefining “Midwest Style”

There is a distinct look you only find when you’re walking down Woodward Avenue, grabbing an iced latte in the Campus Martius, or browsing the sheds at Eastern Market. It’s an aesthetic that isn’t quite New York and definitely isn’t Los Angeles.

It’s Detroit Style.

As a professional blogger on beauty, fashion & style, not to mention a proud Michigan mom, I am constantly inspired by the way our city handles fashion. I have been for years. Around here, style isn’t just about luxury brands or chasing fleeting TikTok aesthetics; it’s a form of storytelling. It’s a reflection of our history, our resilience, and our unique ability to find beauty in the hustle.

If you want to master the ultimate Detroit fashion vibe this season, here is the anatomy of a look that blends our signature grit with a heavy dose of glamour.

1. High-Low Dressing: The Core of the D

Detroit style is inherently practical but fiercely intentional. We are a city of builders, creators, and busy “go-getters”, which means our outfits have to actually work for our lives.

The classic Detroit uniform is a masterclass in the “high-low” mix:

The Look: Pairing a vintage, distressed Detroit leather jacket or a Carhartt piece with a beautiful, flowing slip dress.

Why it works: It balances structure with softness. It says, “I can handle a Detroit pothole and a boardroom meeting in the same hour.”

2. Elevating the “Motor City” Merchandise

We love our city, and we wear it on our sleeves—literally. But we’ve evolved way beyond the standard tourist tees.

The Trend: Local luxury feminine designs are having a massive moment. Brands like Tracy Reese’s Hope for Flowers (designed right here in the city with sustainability at its core) and high-end Detroit typography pieces are taking over.

How to style it: Reese’s clothing allows you to look powerful, bright, strong and stylish. Her dresses & sets speak for themselves and standout in any room. Her designs are so powerful, you don’t have to overthink hair, make up and jewelry.

3. Industrial Hardware & Bold Accents

You can’t talk about Detroit fashion without talking about accessories. Because of our rich manufacturing roots, our style often nods to the industrial.

The Details: Think chunky, heavy-gauge gold jewelry, bold hardware on leather bags, and structural square-toed boots or clogs (yes, clogs are back).

The “Glow” Factor: We don’t do subtle when it comes to confidence. A bold, power-lip (think rich berries or classic reds) paired with oversized sunglasses is the ultimate “Detroit Mom on a Mission” look.

4. The Practical Footwear Pivot

Let’s be real: Detroit is a walking city, but it’s a city with character (and by character, we mean uneven sidewalks and cobblestone alleys). Stilettos on a casual Saturday? I don’t recommend it.

The Choice: The Detroit fashion crowd has mastered the luxury flat. Whether it’s a metallic loafer, a high-vamp glove shoe, or a pristine pair of retro low-profile sneakers, our footwear is designed to keep up with our pace without sacrificing an ounce of style.

Where to Shop Local This Weekend

If you want to add some authentic Detroit flavor to your wardrobe, step away from the major department stores and check out some of our local gems:

Coupe D’état (New Center): For curated, architectural pieces that make a statement.

Hope for Flowers (Midtown): For sustainable, beautifully patterned dresses that exude joy.

Eldorado General Store (Corktown): For the absolute best vintage leather, denim, and silver jewelry in the city.

The Detroit Style Mantra: “We don’t buy style. We build it.”

10 Ways to Incorporate Coconut Oil Into Your Everyday Beauty Routine

Coconut oil can be used 100 different ways and the uses can be categorized in 4 different categories: food uses, body and skin care, household uses, and natural medicine. It’s a favorite natural product of mine and there’s always a large supply of coconut oil in my kitchen pantry and in my bathroom closet next to all of my favorite beauty products. Being the beauty junkie that I am, I love using coconut oil in my daily beauty regimen and love the positive effects it has on my skin and the way it makes my body feel.

Here Are Ten Ways to Incorporate Coconut Oil Into Your Beauty Routine

Wrinkle Reducer –To fight and prevent premature aging, dab just a touch around the eyes during your sleeping hours overnight. Combine a small amount with frankincense oil for extensive anti-aging benefits.

Lock in Moisture After Showers –After your shower, pat your body dry with a clean towel then apply coconut oil liberally all over your body. Coconut oil will hydrate dry skin, and helps to soothe skin after shaving.

Soothing Bath – Add ¼ cup Epsom salts and ¼ cup coconut oil to your running warm bath water. For added relaxation, add a few drops of lavender, peppermint, lemongrass or eucalyptus essential oils. The Epsom salts will relax muscles and draw out toxins while the coconut oil will soothe and moisturize skin.

Makeup Remover – Rub coconut oil gently around eyes in a circular motion with a cotton square. Wipe off residue and makeup with a clean cotton square then cleanse eye area with a warm, wet cloth.

Nail Cuticle Oil –Apply coconut oil on your cuticles on toes and fingers to keep skin soft and supple.

Lip Balm– Many times store bought lip balms are packed with unhealthy ingredients. The healing properties of coconut oil helps to nourish the lips and is healthier to ingest unlike many commercial products. Try combining 2 tablespoons of coconut oil with 2 tablespoons of beeswax, and 1 tablespoon of shea butter. Warm slowly in a non-stick pan until melted. Use to fill lip balm containers. Allow to set for 6 hours before using.

Homemade Lip Gloss or Lipstick – Follow the lip balm steps above and add beetroot powder, cocoa powder, turmeric, and or cinnamon for color and flavor. Only a small amount is needed.

Massage Oil– When warmed between hands or when applied on skin, coconut oil becomes a nice oil perfect for massages and moisturizing. Be sure to add a couple of drops of lavender oil, peppermint or lemongrass essential oil to help heal sore muscles, and stimulate the mind.

Soothing Moisturizer for Cracked Heels – Dry, cracked heals are common but can be painful and unattractive. On a nightly basis, rub cracked feet and heels with coconut oil and place feet in socks before going to sleep. Let the oil penetrate the skin during your 6-8 hours of sleep.

In-grown Hair Treatment and Preventer – Massage shaving areas (after shaving) with coconut oil to reduce and prevent bumps. The oil helps to soften skin so new hair can easily grow through the follicle properly. Plus the coconut oil will kill bacteria at the same time.

Great list right? Read more on my favorite beauty products and essentials.

7 Easy Makeup Steps for Moms on the Go

As moms, we are always spending our time taking care of others. We feed, we soothe, we love, we clean, and we are continuously looking for that matching sock (where the heck do they go anyway?). Oh and getting everyone ready for an outing or an event can be challenging too! What we need to do is always give ourselves time to get ready for whatever the day is about to offer. Why should your little princess have the prettiest dress with a matching hair bow and shiny shoes that go clickety-click and you’re looking like something the cat dragged in? No ma’am, that’s not the lifestyle for you! Take the time to get ready yourself and make yourself feel good about where you’re going, even if it’s to the park or a playdate! You’ll feel better and your day will be a tad brighter, trust me!

When getting ready to go out (even to the grocery store), be sure to put a nice outfit together and be sure to put on a little makeup, for yourself. Don’t have time you say? Nonsense. These simple steps aren’t too glam but great enough to give it a try. I know it sounds funny, after all the hardships we are forced to conquer in our lives, is make up really that helpful or important? Well I believe it is, for myself and for others. Adding make up can give us a little push of self confidence so we aren’t worried about how we look all day or how others are seeing us.

I don’t recommend wearing a full-blown evening look from day-to-day, but adding a few quick habits to your daily routine will make you feel better and ready to charge through the day with the kiddos.

Follow these seven easy steps in the morning, before you start your day. Once you get the hang of them, you’ll find them to be quick and effortless!

Start with concealer. Apply on lids, under the eye, the creases of your nose around your nostrils, along lip line and apply one light strip down the center of your nose.

Add a skin tone shadow on lid

Add a light coat of mascara

Dust loose powder around face

Apply blush by brushing upward from the apple of your cheek towards your temple

Gently add a highlight on top of your cheek bones (slight blend on top of blush), at the heart of your upper lip, and under brow bones.

Follow These Guidelines to Keep the Mom in You Healthy and Happy

It’s true, as Moms we can get stuck in our groove and at times can get lost in our own worlds. For the most part, that’s okay but when our mood and mental health start to become challenged by our own habits, it’s time to wake up!

Thinking of others is what we do. At times, we often forget about ourselves. On that note, I’ve put together ten “must-do” habits to keep your body and mind, healthy and happy.

Ask for Help

It’s completely okay to ask for help. Letting go just a little bit to go grocery shopping alone, shop with girlfriends or have a date night with the hubby is perfectly allowed. Give yourself a chance to take a break once in a while and allow a sitter, grandmother or family member watch the little one while your away.

Go Do Something (Yes, that means leave the house.)

When was the last time you went outside or ran errands all by yourself? Getting out of the house and getting some fresh air and sunlight can do wonders for a Mom who is typically stuck inside working, cooking, cleaning and managing nap times.

Plan a Fun Outing or Trip

If you don’t want to leave the kids behind, plan a fun family-friendly trip or vacation. It could be a day on the town or a week-long adventure in a new town. Either way, you’ll love the change in schedule and the opportunity to see new places and learn new experiences.

Get Your Fashionable Groove On

Get out of those sweats and put something pretty on! Moms who take care of themselves feel good about themselves and even feel happier and sexy. Give it a try by wearing a skirt for a change, throw on some kitten heels and a new lipstick. Don’t save these items for a special occasion. Life is a special occasion so go ahead and dress up. Don’t give up!

Eat and Sleep (Yes, you’re allowed.)

Sleep-deprived kids and babies are cranky. And guess what, Moms are too! If the little one is keeping you up at night, sleep when they sleep during the day. Or, have Dad get up with the baby every other night so you can share the responsibility of those late night shifts and also share the idea of glorious sleep!

Exercise

Exercise makes the body feel good! Exercise reduces stress, gets you in tune with your body, helps fight postpartum blues and helps get rid of unwanted baby fat. Exercise may seem like a chore so start off slow and give yourself a minimum of 30 minutes a day. You can work your way up from there.

Plan a Girl’s Night Out

Some of us forget we were girls before we became Moms. Girlfriends are important and so is good girl talk! Plan a fun ladies lunch or a night on the town with your closest girlfriends. You’ll feel refreshed and renewed plus your friendships will grow stronger.

Plan Ahead

Once you get the hang of your child’s schedule (yes, they need to be on a schedule for their peace of mind and yours), you’ll find it easier to plan ahead. Get something on the calendar in the near future that will make you happy such as lunch with friends, date night with your significant other or a shopping trip alone. You deserve it! How about this idea… For every playdate you schedule, put something on the calendar for yourself too!

Choose a Hobby

I know, I know. You’re thinking, “who the heck has time for a hobby?” You do. Trust me. While the kids are asleep, self-entertaining or at school, try to find a hobby you enjoy. It’s been proven that hobbies ease the mind and help improve self-confidence.

Schedule a Playdate with Other Moms and Kids

There are times when Moms exclude themselves from others simply because the kid’s schedules are a tad overwhelming or they feel like they are “too busy”. Don’t let the kids have all the fun. Schedule a playdate and let the kids play while you and the other Moms connect and have adult conversations. Moms can really learn a lot from each other and just by simply listening to other Mom’s stories, you’ll quickly learn there are other gals that are feeling the exact same way as you. This will help ease any stress or anxieties you may have about motherhood and will allow you to bond with like-minded parents.

How to Dress for C-Section Recovery at Home

Once you stop wondering what looks cute and start considering what will stop irritating your body by breakfast, dressing for c-section recovery at home becomes less daunting. The incision sits low, and the ache in your core lingers. Even a decent pair of pants might betray you when you sit down for the fifth time before noon.

In those first weeks at home, your clothes have a real job to do. Choose pieces that clear the incision and keep you comfortable, whether you’re stretched out on the couch, shifting in bed, or getting back on your feet. Next, let’s look at how to start making the right choices.

Put the Waistband Higher Than You Think

Try this simple test: sit down in your clothes, lean forward, and then stand up. A waistband that feels fine when you’re standing can end up pressing right on your incision when you bend.

Choose pants and shorts with a high rise that sits well above your scar. Avoid thick elastic bands or anything with a bulky seam pressing on your lower belly. If you keep adjusting or tugging at your clothes, they aren’t right for recovery.

Choose Tops That Open Without a Fight

A good top helps you handle feeding, skin-to-skin time, and the inevitable random doorbell moments; it should never make you feel like you have to undress every two hours. When choosing postpartum clothing, seek pieces you can slip on half-awake at 3 a.m. without feeling trapped. Nursing tanks with a soft cardigan work well, as do loose linen dresses: comfortable, practical, and presentable when all you want is more sleep.

Watch Seams, Fabric, and Hem Length

Small details can get really loud during recovery. Side seams twist, tags scratch, and long hems drag under your feet, and each irritation becomes harder to ignore when your patience has other priorities. Choose washed cotton, linen, or soft knits that move with you. Avoid stiff or synthetic fabrics that trap heat when you are already running warm. Also consider hem length; extra-long pants can catch under your heel as you slowly stand, especially with a baby in your arms.

Build a Home Rotation

Aim for three or four outfits that are comfortable for sitting, napping, feeding, and answering the door. They should keep you comfortable all day. A good mix could be a soft button-front set, a nursing tank with a loose layer, and a dress or sleep shirt that doesn’t cling to your belly.

Once you find what works for you, dressing for C-section recovery at home will feel much simpler, and honestly, mama, that’s all you need to focus on right now.

Creative Home Features That Keep Kids Moving Indoors

Rainy days, icy sidewalks, and those stretches when everyone’s schedule goes sideways can turn your living room into an energy arena. Your kids still want to run, climb, hop, and wiggle, and your couch is starting to look like a jungle gym with throw pillows.

You don’t need to ban movement or resign yourself to chaos, though. With creative home features that keep kids moving indoors, you can channel that bounce into something that feels fun, contained, and surprisingly livable. Here’s how!

Turn “Dead Space” Into a Movement Lane

That hallway or awkward stretch between the kitchen and bedrooms already exists, so you might as well give it a purpose. Clear it out and treat it like a mini movement lane where feet can hustle without taking out your coffee table.

A soft runner helps with traction, and a couple of wall-mounted grips or a low rail adds a balance challenge that feels like a game. When a pass-through space becomes a motion zone, you’ll hear fewer “Stop running!” reminders because running finally has a home.

Go Vertical

If you’ve ever watched your kid attempt to scale a bookshelf, you already know the truth: they crave climbing. Indoor vertical play gives them that adventure feeling while you keep the setup safe and controlled.

For example, there are creative design tips for kids’ climbing walls that can help you think through grip spacing, fall zones, and where it fits best in your home. Once kids have a real climbing option, they stop treating your furniture like a mountain range.

Create a “Move and Reset” Corner

Sometimes kids don’t need a lecture; they need a physical reset. A move-and-reset corner gives them a place to burn off steam and regroup without turning the whole house upside down. Pick a small spot in a bedroom or family room and anchor it with a mat or soft rug, then add one or two items that invite safe motion, like a crash cushion or a wobble seat.

Therefore, when your child gets restless or overwhelmed, you can redirect them with something simple like, “Go get your wiggles out over there,” instead of repeating “calm down” until everyone feels annoyed.

A Home Setup That Does Some of the Parenting

The real magic happens when motion feels like part of your home’s normal rhythm, not a special event that requires planning. You can build tiny routines around it, like a dance break before homework or a balance challenge while dinner cooks.

When your space includes creative home features that keep kids moving indoors, you get more laughter and fewer collisions with the furniture. Your kids still burn energy, and you still get a home that feels like yours, just with better outlets for all that kid power.

Best Ways to Keep Valuables Safe at Home

Between school drop-offs, after-school activities, and weekend outings around Metro Detroit, protecting important documents and keepsakes can easily slip down the priority list. Yet when emergencies happen, having a plan in place makes all the difference. Here are practical ways to keep valuables safe without making your home feel like a vault.

1. Use Fire-Resistant Storage for Critical Items

Michigan winters bring added fire risks from space heaters, fireplaces, and overloaded outlets. Important papers and small valuables are especially vulnerable to heat and smoke damage. A fire-resistant storage solution is one of the simplest and most effective safeguards you can put in place. Store passports, Social Security cards, insurance policies, emergency cash, and small heirlooms in materials that can withstand high temperatures

Options like a fireproof cash pouch help shield documents and small valuables from fire damage while remaining compact and easy to store in a drawer or safe. Preparation does not mean expecting disaster—it means actively protecting what you cannot easily replace.

2. Rethink Common Hiding Spots

Many households rely on designated storage areas, but intruders often check those places first. Instead of defaulting to obvious locations, consider smarter placement strategies. You can strengthen your approach by following a few simple principles:

Avoid keeping valuables in dresser drawers or nightstands.

Do not store all important items in one single location.

Refrain from sharing real-time vacation updates or expensive purchases on social media.

Layering your strategy makes protecting home valuables far more effective. Subtlety often works better than complexity.

3. Create Digital Backups of Important Documents

While original paperwork requires physical storage, digital copies add an extra layer of security. Taking time to scan key documents can significantly reduce stress if you ever need to file an insurance claim. Important documents to scan include:

Birth certificates

Insurance policies

Home inventories

Warranty information for major purchases

Store encrypted copies in a secure cloud service so you can access them even if physical copies become damaged.

4. Keep a Simple Home Inventory

Many families underestimate what they own until something goes wrong. A basic home inventory can make recovery faster and smoother. Set aside time once a year to walk through your home and take photos of each room.

Record serial numbers for electronics and keep digital copies of major receipts. The process takes less than 30 minutes but can save months of frustration later.

Protecting valuables does not require dramatic measures. For parents, thoughtful preparation simply supports what matters most: keeping your family secure and prepared.

5 Baby Essentials Worth Researching Before You Buy

Becoming a new mom is one of the most exciting—and overwhelming—experiences of your life. Part of what makes it overwhelming is all the stuff you suddenly have to buy, some of which you could have never imagined being so necessary or so complicated. The baby product market is massive, and every brand claims its item is a must-have.

But not everything deserves a spot in your nursery. We put together this guide to walk you through the baby essentials worth researching before you buy so you can shop with confidence and with your baby’s safety front and center.

Car Seat

Every mama needs a car seat, so safety research here is time well spent. Look beyond the price tag and dig into crash-test ratings, installation ease, and how long the seat will grow with your baby. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rates and recalls car seats regularly, so bookmark that page.

And consider a convertible car seat, which your baby can safely use from their infant to toddler years.

Car Seats Expire

Always check expiration dates because, yes, car seats expire, and using one past its date means you can’t guarantee it will protect your child.

Baby Monitor

The baby monitor market has exploded with options—audio-only, video, Wi-Fi enabled, even monitors that track breathing and heart rate. From a safety standpoint, you want to mind cords. Cords on older monitor models present a strangulation hazard, so look for cord-free designs or keep any cords completely out of reach.

Mind Data Security

If you go with a Wi-Fi monitor, research the brand’s data security practices, as some budget monitors have known vulnerabilities.

Stroller

Your stroller choice depends on your lifestyle, but make sure to check that any stroller you consider meets current ASTM International safety standards. Additionally, look into whether the model has any recall history. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) database is a great free resource for this.

Shop In Person

The best idea is to shop in person so that you can test the brake system, harness buckle, and fold-lock mechanism thoroughly.

Pacifiers

Pacifiers seem simple, but there’s actually a lot to consider from a safety angle. Nipple shape, material, and size all vary by age, and using the wrong size creates a choking risk. The one-piece construction is safest since two-piece pacifiers can separate. Consider orthodontic designs to support healthy oral development, and discuss silicone versus latex construction with your pediatrician, especially if allergies run in your family.

Watch for Pacifier Accessories

When you move into pacifier holders and clips, remember that materials matter in pacifier holder design. Look for food-safe, nontoxic options that won’t irritate delicate skin. And always inspect clips for sharp edges or weak attachment points.

Breast Pump

Look for pumps with closed systems—meaning milk never contacts the motor—which prevents mold and bacterial buildup inside the tubing. Open-system pumps are harder to fully sanitize.

Get Expert Advice

It’s also smart to talk to a lactation consultant before you decide. They can give you useful, personalized guidance that no product description can replace.

Final Thoughts

Shopping for your baby doesn’t have to be stressful. Take your time, lean on trusted safety databases, and remember that these are the baby essentials worth researching before you buy. A little homework now keeps your baby safer every single day.
