Wilmington closes out home schedule with win over Detroit

Wilmington, NC — Joe Buck had a season high 24 points; Brian Leggett added 21 to lead Wilmington to a convincing 110-91 victory over slumping Detroit. The loss for the Panthers is their third straight.

The game was tight for the first two quarters with Wilmington leading by four after one and eight at halftime. In the third, the Sea Dawgs slowly started pulling away, and in the fourth finished the deal outscoring the Panthers by nine to take the 19 point victory.

Wilmington got 21 from Brian Leggett and 17 from Alex Harper. This was in addition to Buck’s 24 points and 14 boards.

Detroit was lead by Stane’s Bufford’s 29; Walter Waters had a double double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

The two teams face off for the final two games of the three game set in Detroit on Saturday and Sunday.

Woodland hits ten 3's in Detroit loss to Augusta

Augusta, GA — Brian Woodland nailed ten three pointers on his way to a 45 point night, but it wasn’t enough as Augusta defeated Detroit 123-119.

The game was tight early with Augusta leading by one after one with Detroit coming back to take a two point lead at the break. Augusta came back strong in the third taking a 16 point lead going into the fourth.

Detroit, despite playing with only six players, made a strong run at the end, but ran out of gas losing by four.

For Augusta, Cory Sims lead six players in double figures with 29 points. Sims also contributed nine assists and eight rebounds. Demitrius Howard had 25 with Kenneth Curtis adding 16.
For Detroit, Oscar Sanders had 19 with Michael Manciel adding 15 points for the Panthers who drop to 6-11 on the season.

Up next for Detroit is Wilmington in the first of a three game season ending series against the Sea Dawgs in Wilmington on Sunday night.

Augusta finishes out their season on Sunday night against Battle Creek.

Detroit Falls to Augusta, 136-132

Detroit, MI - The Augusta Groove moved back to .500 and snapped the Detroit's three game winning streak as they defeated the Panthers 136-132.

Cory Sims scored a game-high 35 points to go along with seven assists and seven rebounds. Donielle Davis scored 29 points and Demetrius Howard scored 21 points to go along with 11 rebounds fro the Groove.

Detroit was led by Walter Waters 28 points and 15 rebounds. Stane's Bufford scored 28 as well and Randy "White Chocolate" Gill had 24 points and seven assists in the loss.

These two teams return to action on Saturday when they square off against each other in Augusta at 7PM.

Detroit escapes with 119-115 victory over Montreal

Detroit, MI — Stane's Bufford had 26 while Walter Waters had a double double with 17 points and 13 boards to lead Detroit to a 119-115 victory over Montreal.

The game was tight in the first with the Panthers holding a one point advantage after one with the lead widening to eight at the half.

In the third, Montreal came back strong, and took their first lead of the game 81-79 with 4:06 to go in the quarter, when David Dubois hit from inside the lane. The lead would stretch to 11 as Jasen Hunt capped off a 14-0 Sasquatch run with a 12 foot baseline jumper. Detroit would quickly come back going on an 8-0 run of their own and at the end of three, it was Montreal by four.

In the fourth, Montreal tried to stay in the ballgame, but playing with only six players, they simply ran out of legs, losing the lead for good at the 4:10 mark when Lawrence Harden hit one inside the lane. Detroit’s defense tightened up and the Panthers came away with a four point victory.

Montreal was led by Rantana Sak who had 28, including seven three pointers. Kevin Benjamin had 22 with Buster Perkins adding 21 points and 15 assists.

Detroit was led by Bufford’s 26; Walter Waters added 17 points and 13 boards. Michael Mancel had a double double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Up next for Detroit is a home date next Sunday against Augusta. Montreal will be in Barre, Vermont to take on the Frost Heaves on Saturday night.

Panthers Win Third Straight, Win 123-116

Chicago, IL – With a revamped roster, the Detroit Panthers are getting hot and find themselves in a three-game winning streak, but it might just be too late for them to slip into the playoffs.

Brian Woodland scored a season-high 30 points including 6-for-6 from three-point land, and the Panthers held on to beat the Chicago Throwbacks 123-116 on Friday night.

Randy “White Chocolate” Gill continued to fill up the stat sheet with 24 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals and Stane’s Bufford hit for 16 for the Panthers, who won their third straight game.

Three Chicago players topped to 20-point plateau with Dameon Mason leading the way with 28 points. Stanley Thomas continued his scoring surge with 23 and Willie Mitchell hit for 22 against his former team. Imari Sawyer picked up a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists.

The Panthers record improved to 5-9 while Chicago dropped to 6-9. The Panthers look to pick up their fourth consecutive win on Sunday when they host Montreal.

Chuck Bailey Leaves For New Zealand

Birmingham, Mich - The Detroit Panthers announced today, Thursday, March 5 that small forward, Charles "Chucky" Bailey will leave for Europe this Saturday. Bailey received a call from the New Zealand Bay Hawks, a National Basketball League (NBL) team, on Tuesday. "We are going to really miss Chucky," stated Bill Jones, assistant general manager and head coach of the Panthers. "His tough defensive and offensive style has been a great asset for our team."

Leaving his hometown of Detroit and moving to New Zealand is a major change for him but according to Bailey he is up for the challenge. "I want to thank the Panthers Organization for allowing me to play in my home town. I have enjoyed playing for them as well as the PBL. I am ready to branch out and see what else is in store for me," says Bailey. "Chucky always gave us 110 percent when he was on the court. I have grown very fond of him," states Kevin A. Carter, general manager and owner of the Panthers. "I hate to see him go but I'm very happy for him and I know he will do well in New Zealand."

Bailey is not only taking great basketball skills but he also is leaving with a spirit of giving and caring for the community. "He always stepped up and volunteered when the Panthers had any community service opportunities available. He is a good person and I wish him all the best," said Phoenicia Jackson, Director of Public Relations for the Detroit Panthers.

Panthers Sign Odgra Bobo

Birmingham, Mich - The Detroit Panthers announced on Thursday, March 5, 2009, they have acquired Odgra Bobo from the Mid Michigan Destroyers. Bobo, a point guard, who posses awesome offensive, defensive and rebounding skills will help the Panthers continue on their quest for a spot in the playoffs.

Detroit Panthers Join Premier Basketball League

Chicago, IL - The Premier Basketball League officially announced today that the Detroit Panthers have been accepted and will begin play in the upcoming 2008/2009 season.

The Detroit ownership group is headed by Detroit native and successful businessman Kevin A. Carter, Chairman of the Carter Organization, Inc.
