It all started when JL left town - And the busboys wild cheers did abound
They said he's the reason - We messed up post season
The "Old coot's" the worst manager around

Then came the longed for Tiger story - The Ivy League kid would seek glory
By taking the reins -He'd end Tiger pains
And proceed to the World Series foray

He didn't ride in on a horse - But he brought a new ball style of course
Our guys would run now - Not relax in the sun now
And his laptop would be his stat source

Some older folks did question a bit - Does the Kid even smoke chew or spit?
And how about the jacket - In L.A. caused a racket
But the busboys responded that's shit

And so far the Kid's doing nicely - In 1st place we are, more precisely
His strategy decisions - Most often were visions
That worked out nicely - precisely

So far in this season we've done well - And fans and the players all feel swell
But a little bad luck - If the team starts to suck
All the busboys will make Brad's life hell

So - a warning to the malcontent fringe - That tend to surface when other teams binge
What will happen you see - If you alienate DD
The next guy to manage - Brandon Inge

THE NEW SEASON

The season has started and we don't have a clue

What in the world is our team going to do?

We don't have a closer -- must be a bad dream

Or could that be part of some grand master scheme?

The bullpen's unproven -- who's good and who's not

We'll just have to wait and see what they've got.

Our left-fielder's name no-one can say

But that matters not if he knows how to play.

Second base is a toss-up, who's gonna do it

Well dammit, whoever it is just don't screw it!

Our best hitters are fat and that's not s'posed to work

But we'll watch those homers and know that's no quirk.

The manager's old and might be senile too

When they call out the lineup, he might say, "Uh -- who???"

The owner's old too and he thinks it's a pity

That he can't seem to bring back the rings for his city.

Everyone says we look good on paper

Which is good if it doesn't all end up like vapor.

The starters are good -- not even one clown

If only they don't -- please don't let us down!

Well it's out of our hands as it is every year

All we can do is hope pray and cheer.

Matt Tuiasosopo has all but made the opening day roster. He has impressed during Spring Training with a batting line of .320/.414/.680 and has generated enough of a fan base to try to get a nickname. In an attempt to bring some humor to this blog, here is 2E So-So's short career in song form. To the tune of The Kingsmen's Louie Louie:

A fine little guy, what a player.

Me hit a homer in first pro at bat.
Tied the team lead with 4, imagine that.

Three years me called up and down.
Me didn’t hit well, got ran out of town.
Me still can play defense anyway.

Grabbing cups
filled with beer
we join the crowd
and raise a cheer

to boys of summer
standing tall
in final contests
during fall

they grip a bat
and swinging sweet
bring the fans
all to their feet

as bat meets ball
and bat prevails
over fence

the valiant batter

No baseball, no Tigers, at least for a while

I can't figure out how to bring back my smile.

I guess there are books I've wanted to read

No baseball, no Tigers and that's what I need.

There's holiday shopping that needs to be done

No baseball, no Tigers, it wouldn't be fun.

I could go to Vegas --- that's always been nice

No baseball, no Tigers, no joy tossing dice.

What can I do to fill up this lull?

No baseball, no Tigers, life is just dull.

Maybe I'll just look ahead to Thanksgiving

No baseball, no Tigers, no, life's not worth living.

I'll just have to wait until April is here

Yes baseball, Yes Tigers, life's full of good cheer!

How can I -- I must -- wait out the cold season

It's Baseball! It's Tigers! Yes, that was the reason!

The Corner of Michigan and Trumbull

Looking back through the years to days way back when
we had so many memories to treasure
Of great Tiger teams that our parents knew well
and the thoughts of which still give us pleasure.
So just one more time let us cast our thoughts back
to the place where those greats would assemble
Men like Ty Cobb and Gehringer, Kaline and Kell
at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull.

A few beers early in the Batters Box bar
then the walk ‘cross the road to the turnstiles
Looking up at the big Tiger Stadium sign
that turned anyone’s sadness to smiles.
Then across Tiger Plaza and on up the ramps
where, with sunglasses on, you might stumble -
It was dark as the underworld under the stands
at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull

Emerging from darkness the emerald green bluegrass
was the first thing you’d see when you entered
Three forty to left field, three twenty five in right
and that flagpole, four forty, in center.
You’d be transported back to a different age
It was easy to feel very humble
The first time you saw that cathedral of baseball
at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull.

From a seat up in bleacher beach, sun cream in hand
it was just the most beautiful sight
Or for something more shady then nowhere was better
than the upper deck overhang in right
Vendors with sodas and 4 kinds of beer
and then if your stomach should rumble
You could feast on steamed hot dogs, the best in the world,
at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull.

The pop as the first pitch was caught for a strike
would echo to all parts of the stands
In blinding white game shirts with old English D’s
Detroit’s boys of summer, and their fans.
And as a ball was popped foul for a fan’s souvenir
you might hear Ernie Harwell’s voice grumble
“And a young man from Lansing will take that one home”
from the corner of Michigan and Trumbull.

But the memories are fading now, like the blue paint
and one day they tore it all down
When the Tigers had moved to Comerica Park
and they'd play no more baseball in Corktown.
But we’ll always remember with fondness and pride
even when the old ballpark has crumbled
All our heroes and the pennants and rings that they won
at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull.

Sabermetrics and the spreadsheets
They tally up each out and run
Analyzing what’s been done

But can you really quantify
The drama with computer eye
One tick late or one tick quick
One sure out becomes a hit

Past performance can suggest
Who might be better than the rest
But your predictions now must yield
To the outcome on the field

‘Cause when it’s all been said and done
Today the game is lost or won
Here in this moment, not by stat,
With baseball glove and baseball bat.
