In last week of February 2017, OYO Rooms received two good news and one bad news. First good news that it is getting additional funding of $500 million from Softbank and second is its rival StayZilla decided to close down. If you remember OYO rooms and StayZilla had twitter war last year.

What is the bad news? Unfortunately, the good news is the bad one too! StayZilla closing has set alarming bells to OYO rooms if it will follow the same path or will sustain its pace towards profitability. Remember OYO rooms showed his earnings of ₹2.4 crores (see tofler story) and a loss of ₹350 crores. (see inc42 story)

To make end to end secure communication, you need HTTPS. To a great extent it protects data packets from intercepting by third party tools. HTTPS i.e. HTTP communication over SSL(Secure Socket Layer) or TLS(Transport Layer Security).

If you don't understand these terms, don't worry. In layman terms, HTTP and HTTPS works in a same fashion except the data communication between web browser and web server is encrypted which prevents man-in-middle snooping. Both web server and browser have in-built mechanism to encrypt and decrypt the data and for this web server keeps an SSL certificate. This SSL certificate is issued by Certifying Authorities (CA) and the browser uses this certificate (public-key) to verify the identity of the web server.

In nutshell, you need SSL certificate which you can obtain in the following three ways:

1. Generate your own self-signed certificate.
2. Obtain a free certificate from free CA
3. Buy a commercial certificate.

1. Self-signed certificate is required for development or testing purpose. This certificate is not used for commercial purpose. You can generate your own using openssl tool on a Linux environment. Tony Erwin blog has a nice post that provides steps to create self-signed certificate using openssl. Alternately you can go to websites like MakeCert or www.selfsignedcertificate.com.

2. There are certifying authorities that offer free SSL production-ready certificates like CACert and LetUsEncryt. There are “ifs and buts” are involved to issue certificates from these organizations, but they are gaining popularity. There are other organizations which offer 30 days to 90 days valid certificates on trial.

3. Companies like Verisign, GoDaddy, BigRock, Bluehost and may other hosting sites vendors sell SSL certificates for few hundreds to a few thousand dollars.

Tutorial 1: NodeJS: An Asynchronous World

For so many years, Javascript has been a defacto standard to do front end scripting in browsers. In 2009, another incarnation of JS (V8 JS engine from Chrome) as node.js came out which made it server side scripting language also. NodeJS came up with a bouqet of many features like:

Its execution is fast (V8 JS engine being compined in C++)
Promotes asynchronous coding style
Same coding paradigm for front and back end.

Its event-driven, non-blocking I/O model make it popular among developers community. NodeJS has assemblage of libraries and frameworks helping developer community. Express JS or Express is also one of the framework available for NodeJS helps in developing web based applications.

Installing NodeJS

The simplest way is go to NodeJS website and click on the installer link. The site also provides other download options (binary download or installers for Mac and Linux flavours). For Windows make sure your machine has latest OS updates otherwise windows installer may have trouble in installing.

For Linux, nodeJS package manager (eg apt-get) is also available. The installer also installs node package manager (npm). Once installed you can check node version and npm version by typing node -v and npm -v respectively at the command prompt or shell.

First NodeJS Program

You can try your first the most famous "Hello World" program in nodeJS. Type the following script in notepad or any text editor and save the file as helloworld.js

To run this code type node helloworld.js at the shell prompt. If everything works well, you would see the output of the program similar to what is shown in the figure.

console.log() api is part of console built-in module in nodeJS. There are many inbuilt modules (or libraries) and globals defined in nodeJS. Apart from using built-in modules, you can use external modules.

Node Package Manager or npm helps you installing or managing node modules. The site www.npmjs.com lists the most starred packages used among NodeJS community.

Let us try to install and use colors module. The colors module gives colour style to your console output. Type npm install colors will download colors module from npm repository and install it. You can see a directory named 'node_modules' gets created where npm installs any package.

See the following snippet showing how to use 'colors' node module:

While working for a world’s top most product company, one day a Product Manager working there approached to me. He had a legal letter served by one of our client. The legal notice says that our company has to bear a cost of 25,000 Australian dollars as bandwidth cost incurred to our client. Months back he got a handsome contract from a professional graduate school. The school wanted him print admit cards and prepare students list as PDF. It involved scanning of photographs, data entry and little bit of image processing.

To begin he sub-contracted the entire assignment keeping his profit margin. He hired a team from digitization company which comprised of data entry operators and designers to furnish this job. It was a team of seven persons. One person used to scan students photographs.Two persons used Photoshop to convert photographs into required formats for admit card as well as for web based pdfs. Four persons did data entry into MS Word preparing admit cards and filling in excel sheet to generate PDFs. I think the hired company owned a license of Acrobat, they used excel plugin to generate PDFs.

I never believed this. I tried to access https://secweb.rbi.org.in/BO/precompltindex.htm and got the following message.

It is really surprising, one of the biggest financial institution of India can do such type of mistake. I think their IT department must be fired immediately.

I must tell you the reason why I went to RBI website. My banker (Bank Of India - BOI) is refusing to issue FIRC letter. I tried to email BOI manager. His email account was full and my email bounced. Finally I told him on phone that his email account is full. He was not a tech savvy person and took his colleague's help to empty his InBox. Anyway, I didn't get my FIRC. I decided to talk to BOI nodal officer for this deficiency of service. I sent an email to BOI's Delhi Zone Nodal Officer (to some Mr. Prasad as mentioned on BOI website). After two days, Google Mail server sent me timed out message. Finally I thought of contacting RBI and found this fake SSL issue.
What should I say?
It reminds me of Ghalib' Sher "...Jahan har dal par ullu baitha hai to Anzam-e-gulistan kya hoga"
