 Scrapping The Starving Artist Mythology
I love breaking the myth of the starving artist. That is such a lie that people tell artists from the day they are born, and it's so sad that so many artists psych themselves out with this myth.
Musician Magdalen Hsu-Li continues, There is always a way to make a great living from music or any art form if you are willing to use your creativity to the business aspect.
This notion of the starving artist can affect us in many ways, even providing a reason why someone will not invest any time of energy into pursuing a creative interest because only big stars make money or another self-limiting belief like that.
In his post in his post Twelve Things You Were Not Taught in School About Creative Thinking, Michael Michalko writes about a number of attitudes and viewpoints that can affect how we engage in creative thinking and creative expression.

An Intense Inner Pressure to Create
I started out as a painter, and then painting led to cinema... Then cinema led to so many different areas... David Lynch
In her book, Mary-Elaine Jacobsen quotes some insightful comments by Annemarie Roeper (founder of the Roeper School and The Roeper Review, a professional journal on the gifted) about the intense inner pressure to create as a characteristic of high ability people:
Gifted adults may be overwhelmed by the pressure of their own creativity. The gifted derive enormous satisfaction from the creative process.
Much has been written about this process: how it works, the pressure of the inner agenda, the different phases it involves, the excitement and anxiety that comes with it, and the role played by the unconscious. ...

Enhancing creative expression and personal change

I love breaking the myth of the starving artist. That is such a lie that people tell artists from the day they are born, and it's so sad that so many artists psych themselves out with this myth.

Musician Magdalen Hsu-Li continues, There is always a way to make a great living from music or any art form if you are willing to use your creativity to the business aspect.

People think that creativity should only be in art and the business should be in business. But the most successful business people use their intuition and creativity to problem solve and figure out how to make things work.

[From MusicDish interview by Steven Digman.]

She founded her own company ChickPop Records. The photo is from her album Fire.

One of his comments: The artist is not a special person... Every one of us is born a creative, spontaneous thinker. The only difference between people who are creative and people who are not is a simple belief. Creative people believe they are creative.

People who believe they are not creative, are not. Once you have a particular identity and set of beliefs about yourself, you become interested in seeking out the skills needed to express your identity and beliefs. This is why people who believe they are creative become creative. If you believe you are not creative, then there is no need to learn how to become creative and you don't.

Michael Michalko is the author of a number of books including Creative Thinkering: Putting your Imagination to Work.

But it goes beyond just believing you are creative - or not.

For example, how much do you compare your creative ambitions to the renowned accomplishments of name brand artists? If you like composing, do you disparage your level and quality of music writing if it isn't at the level of a Mozart or a Leonard Cohen?

Do you categorize yourself or other creative people in an either-or way: either wildly successful, or unsuccessful?

In her post Starving Artist, Meet Web 2.0, Emilie Wapnick writes about a very talented guitarist who was feeling very discouraged about his hunt for a job: "At this point, I'm willing to take any job that I don't completely hate and I'll just play music on the side."

Wapnick comments: All you want is to make art, and instead here you are running around, trying to get the corporate world's attention, tweaking résumés, shouting 'pick me! pick me!' to faceless corporations who see you as nothing more than an interchangeable cog in the machine. That sense of powerlessness is enough to make anyone feel bitter and worthless. And has the life of an artist not always been marked by the romantic notion of struggle, famine, and hardship?

But, she continues, Okay look, I don't mean to be harsh, but Starving Artist, would you please get with the times?! You may have had to 'sell out or starve' in the past, but a lot has changed in recent years. For example:

No more are the days when you must carry around slides of your paintings from gallery to gallery in order to get a public viewing.

No more must you send your manuscript from publisher to publisher in order to get your novel into the hands of the public.

No more do record labels decide which music gets heard and which doesn't.

The gatekeepers have toppled over, and guess what? You no longer need anyone's permission to 'make it.' Thanks to widespread access to the internet and new, affordable technology, the power that these exclusive gatekeepers once had - that is, the power of distribution - is now yours.

Emilie Wapnick is author of the program Renaissance Business - make your multipotentiality your day job.

Of course, being an artist entrepreneur requires changes in attitudes, and adding or refining work priorities and activities.

If you create a painting, you may not be in the position of having a gallery waiting to buy it and market it for you.

You may need to be creative about other ways to market your work, even develop other products to express your creative ideas and knowledge.

In her article Combine multiple talents to become a successful artist, Andrea Kay addresses possible attitudes about being creative.

"So you want to make music, act, produce films, design fashion, dance or write movies?," she writes. "No sweat. That is, if you tweak your thinking a bit. That includes eliminating the term 'starving artist' from your vocabulary. For one thing, if you think that's what you're getting into when you pursue a creative career, well, that's what you'll get. Just as predictable is the possibility for success if you can envision a wider path...

From my post Marketing Yourself And Your Creative Work: Don't They Deserve a Wider Audience?

Multiple Forms of Expression

One example of a creative polymath or multipotentialite (Emilie Wapnick's term) is Viggo Mortensen - an actor, writer, musician, poet, photographer and painter.

He has commented, "Photography, painting or poetry - those are just extensions of me, how I perceive things, they are my way of communicating."

From my post Viggo Mortensen: Why just one thing?

That is also a quote I used in my book Developing Multiple Talents - The personal side of creative expression.
[Website] [Facebook]

[Photo: Street Painter, by pedrosimoes7 - from my post Artists are Crazy; Mothers Can't Be Artists, and Other Myths.]

A final quote:But starvation, unfortunately, didn't improve art. It only hindered it. A man's soul was rooted in his stomach. A man could write much better after eating a porterhouse steak and drinking a pint of whiskey than he could ever write after eating a nickel candy bar. The myth of the starving artist was a hoax.

Marketing Yourself And Your Creative Work: Don't You Deserve a Wider Audience?
How do you think about being creative versus the business aspects of success, like marketing? Do you see them as separate, even mutually exclusive?
Do you think of creative expression as something more spiritual or pure than sales or business?
The photo - Artist at work by Balaji Dutt - reflects how many creative people typically work: engrossed, and happily solitary.
We may see and read about many examples of successful - even extravagantly successful - artists, but they are usually celebrities, and mostly not solitary creative workers.
There is not much media attention on the millions of creative people with careers in film production, book cover illustration, fashion design, video game creation and so many other creative occupations - many of them often working as entrepreneurs, responsible for their own achievement and success.
Many creators probably don't think much about the value of marketing to get their ideas and creations out to a wider audience, to have more impact and success.

Author and Jungian analyst Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D. explains the idea of archetype as a predisposition that contributes to our personality, helping define our strengths, difficulties, and meaning.
In her article Archetypes for Writers, Jennifer Van Bergen writes about exploring these underlying pre-existent patterns, or archetypes, in people's behaviors and actions.
She says by working at the archetype level.. your writing will never be the same.

Filmmaker So Yong Kim on Facing Her Unlikeable Parts When Writing
So Yong Kim is a director, producer and writer. Her latest movie is For Ellen, starring Paul Dano and Jena Malone.
In an interview, she talks about a number of aspects of developing her script and shooting the film - aspects of creative expression that impact other artists as well.
Kim says one of her challenges in writing Dano's character was that it was so personal.
I think the scariest part about the writing of the character was not the fact that he was male but that he has so many traits of myself. That's the most embarrassing thing I've seen on screen.

Enhancing creative expression and personal change

 Developing Creativity in Solitude
Creativity is always collaborative, even when you're alone. Keith Sawyer
Artists work best alone. Steve Wozniak
Different kinds of creative expression have different needs in terms of solitude versus collaboration.
Writer Susan Cain, who notes that psychologist Gregory Feist (a Professor at San Jose State University) found that many of the most creative people in a range of fields are introverts who are comfortable working in solitary conditions in which they can focus attention inward.

Make a difference and make a business
By Brendon Burchard
Your life story, your knowledge, and your message--what you know from experience and want to share with the world--have greater importance and market value than you probably ever dreamed.

You are here to make a difference in this world, and the best way to do that is to use your knowledge and experience (on any topic, in any industry) to help others succeed.

You can get paid for sharing advice and how-to information that helps others succeed, and in the process you can build a very lucrative business and a profoundly meaningful life.
If any of this sounds unbelievable--especially the part about your getting paid for sharing what might essentially be your message to the world--then it is simply because you have been unaware of a fairly unknown and previously secretive industry that exists all around us--what I call the expert industry.

 More Intelligence, More Creative?
Do we get more creative with more intelligence? How do intelligence and creative ability interact?
Dean Keith Simonton, PhD thinks Intelligence is purely a cognitive construct. Creativity on the other hand, I see as being much more complex.
Like other writers on creativity, he makes a distinction between little c creativity and big C creativity.
He says creativity in everyday life, solving everyday problems, or little c creativity, is very closely related to intelligence because intelligence includes, as part of it, problem-solving abilities.
But, he adds, when you are talking about 'big C creativity,' you're talking about being able to generate new ideas, generate some kind of product that's going to have some kind of impression on other people...a poem, a patent, a short story, a journal article or whatever.
But it's something that is a concrete, discrete product that is original and serves some kind of adaptive function.
And that kind of creativity, that big c creativity, involves a whole bunch of other characteristics besides intelligence.

Bill Bradley, retired NBA player, US Senator, and US presidential candidate, said Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.
Any high-ability student knows the truth of this quote, as they have likely received accolades, awards, and praise for their efforts and ambitions.
But these students also know the darker side of ambition, the side known only by the few who walk that path and have seen its thorns and shadows.
The truth is that ambition, and the skill that it takes to pursue that ambition, often leaves people lonely, excluded, and alienated from everyday events.

Therapist Dennis Palumbo on the Writer's Inner Life
Dennis Palumbo, MFT, is a writer and licensed psychotherapist in private practice, specializing in creative issues. This is from an interview for Shrink Rap Radio:
Initially, when you start writing, or at least when I started writing, you think the reward is, wow! It'll be so great to see my words on screen, to see my name on screen...
I think what happens over time when, because you're a writer - especially once I became a screenwriter - you're very powerless as a screenwriter.
And what happens - and it's a subtle change, but I think it's the one that most mature writers go through - is the gratification becomes personal... the process of writing becomes its own reward... you tell the story the way you want to tell the story, and then hope for the best...

Stepping Into Your Brilliance Zone
By Christine Kloser
What is your "brilliance zone"? The best way to answer this question is to list some of the aspects that exist when you are in your brilliance zone.

The first way of knowing you're in your brilliance zone is that you feel deeply connected to the service you provide for others.

Change Doesn't Have to Be Difficult... If You Know How
By Morty Lefkoe
Imagine that you had been doing something a certain way for a long time and you believed that you were doing it the right way.
Now imagine that I come along and tell you not to do that way any more... No matter how persuasive I might be, you and most other people probably wouldn't change their behavior... If you think what you are doing is right and I am telling you to do something else, what does it sound like I am asking you to do? It would seem to you that I was telling you to do something wrong.

Ginny Ruffner: "That bad time made me more creative."
Many people face challenges in their lives they not only overcome, but are able to use for enhancing their creative work.
Mixed-media and glass artist Ginny Ruffner recovered from a near fatal car accident and a coma for five weeks and was confined to a hospital for five months.
A description on her site ginnyruffner.com about the documentary about her: A Not So Still Life says, "Doctors were convinced that she would never walk or talk again, but true to her indomitable spirit, she transformed a potentially tragic accident into a career of even more imaginative creations.

How to Believe in Yourself - No Matter What
By Christine Kloser
The voices are quite familiar. "Who do you think you are? You're not an expert!
"Why would anyone believe you? Nobody will be interested in what you want to share.
"It's already been written. You're not worthy of success. You can't be trusted. You're not a writer."
OK. You get the picture, I don't need to go on. These voices you hear rolling over and over again in your mind are debilitating.
I know, because you've told me so and because I grappled with those same voices for years. (And, there are some I'm still working on... )
So, I want to share with you what works for me - and what I believe will work for you - to help quiet these frustrating voices so you can believe in yourself.

Author Taylor Stevens - Imagination as a Survival Mechanism
Novelist Taylor Stevens was born and raised in an infamous cult.
A New York Times article says, "Growing up, she bounced from city to city, often living in cramped and impoverished conditions, rarely spending more than a few months at a stretch at one of the cult's dozens of communes around the world."
The article notes her first novel The Informationist has "already secured gushy blurbs from brand-name thriller writers like Tess Gerritsen and Vince Flynn and the inevitable comparisons to Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy, which also features an offbeat, spunky heroine..."

What to Do When You Fall Out of Love With Your Work
By Valerie Young, Ed.D.
You started out loving your chosen career - at least in the beginning. But over time, you and your calling, well, you just grew apart.
And just like a relationship that's gone bad, it can be hard to walk away from a career or a small business into which you've put so much time and effort to say nothing of the financial investment.

 Envy and Your Creative Life
Envy is an insult to oneself.
    Yevgeny Yevtushenko
    Envy is human nature.
    Monica Bellucci
A simple dictionary definition of envy is a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, possessions, etc.
Envy can be an insidious feeling, with a collection of attitudes and beliefs that impact our creative energy and motivation.
In his book Creativity for Life: Practical Advice on the Artist's Personality, and Career, creativity coach and writer Eric Maisel, PhD gives a concrete example:
An artist's envy may manifest itself in any number of ways. In the past she may have loved to read; now she avoids contemporary fiction completely. All living authors have become her rivals. Or she may avidly read contemporary fiction, but only to assure herself that it's bad. Or she may read only the works of an author she knows is an alcoholic or or near death -- a rival she can pity or feel superior to.

Your Creative Mind with Learning Differences
"There were a lot of benefits to being dyslexic for me...I think I came into an appreciation of all those qualities of language..." Novelist Richard Ford
The traditional framing of ADHD, dyslexia and some other conditions as "learning disorders" seems to be increasingly challenged by the views of many researchers and artists that these can be considered "learning differences" and that such neurodiversity can actually benefit creative expression.
Of course, something like ADHD doesn't magically become "good" or benign just having a different label, and many people's lives are disrupted by such conditions.
An article on actor Charlize Theron, for example, said she "finds acting a struggle, because she suffers from chronic Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)" and symptoms of "distractibility, restlessness, inability to sit still and difficulty concentrating on one thing for any period of time make it much harder for her to concentrate on a movie project.
In her article The Creative Struggle, Julie Burstein writes about painter Chuck Close and his challenges.
"He knew from the time he was a small child that he would be an artist. But for Close, art wasn't just fun, it was his most powerful way to connect, because he has severe learning disabilities."

Maggie Taylor on creating ambiguous and even disturbing images
What inspired me to write this post was seeing a number of large-scale prints of the work of Maggie Taylor (and other exciting images by photo artists) in the Digital Darkroom show at The Annenberg Space for Photography (Los Angeles, CA, December 17, 2011 through May 28, 2012).
Her work is so evocative - rich with symbols and themes of inner states and unusual realities.
In an interview, Taylor talked about this aspect of her creations.
"To me the images work on two levels: they are about these specific objects, yet they also invite reverie or recollections...

Michele and Robert Root-Bernstein on Teaching the Creative Process
In one of their Psychology Today posts, the Root-Bernsteins declare: Teach how knowledge is made and you teach for creativity. Here is more from their post:
Creativity is not a you have it or you don't kind of thing. It isn't a personality trait. It's not a one size fits all habit of mind. It's not, simply, a set of skills to test for or a roster of art classes.

Developing Creativity: Excitabilities - Our Teeming Brains
Video: Does your brain ever get tired? - Boston detective Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon, left) to medical examiner Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander), in Rizzoli and Isles - the TV series based on the books by physician Tess Gerritsen.
Stephen King has said: I've taken off two months, three months at a time, and, by the end, I get really squirrelly. My night life, my dream life, gets extremely populated and crazed. It's as though something in there is running all the time.
What are Excitabilities?
One of the key concepts of Polish psychiatrist and psychologist Kazimierz Dabrowski, MD, PhD (1902 - 1980) is that individuals with strong overexcitabilities are good candidates for higher level development.
Stephanie Tolan, a writer and advocate for extremely bright children, notes the original Polish word for overexcitabilities or excitabilities can be translated more literally as superstimulatabilities.

That's right, baby. It's your hot new business and it's ready for action.

 Getting Past Fear of Failure
By Kenneth W. Christian, Ph.D.
Three fears lead directly to underachievement: fear of failure, fear of success, and fear of making a mistake.
Any of these fears can paralyze initiative. When all three are working, initiative grinds to a halt. How many of these fears plague you?
Usually, we experience some of each. If even one gets in the way of moving forward, it's not good. In this article I am going to tell you steps to take to get past the first of these three fears, fear of failure.

Stop being run by your feelings
By Morty Lefkoe
At one point or another, everyone has uttered the words: "I am happy." And: "I am upset."
Notice what happens when you say: "I am [something]." You are describing yourself. Any words that follow the statement "I am" is your description of yourself.
It feels as if our entire being is happy, or upset, or anxious, or any other emotion we say we are. But is that really who we are?

Creating money: The inner and outer work of financial goals
By Molly Gordon
It's the time of year when we traditionally think about the past 12 months and look to the future.
Time to review what worked and didn't work about 2011 and to plan for 2012.
Time for Accidental Entrepreneurs to be clear and specific about lots of things, including money.
Because money matters, even-or especially-when you don't want your work to be about the money.

Michele and Robert Root-Bernstein on Teaching the Creative Process
In one of their Psychology Today posts, the Root-Bernsteins declare: "Teach how knowledge is made and you teach for creativity." Here is more from their post:
Creativity is not a "you have it" or "you don't" kind of thing. It isn't a personality trait. It's not a "one size fits all" habit of mind. It's not, simply, a set of skills to test for or a roster of art classes.

Developing Creativity: Excitabilities - Our Teeming Brains
Video: "Does your brain ever get tired?" - Boston detective Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon, left) to medical examiner Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander), in Rizzoli and Isles - the TV series based on the books by physician Tess Gerritsen.
Stephen King has said: "I've taken off two months, three months at a time, and, by the end, I get really squirrelly. My night life, my dream life, gets extremely populated and crazed. It's as though something in there is running all the time."
What are Excitabilities?
One of the key concepts of Polish psychiatrist and psychologist Kazimierz Dabrowski, MD, PhD (1902 - 1980) is that individuals with strong "overexcitabilities" are good candidates for higher level development.
Stephanie Tolan, a writer and advocate for extremely bright children, notes the original Polish word for overexcitabilities or excitabilities can be translated more literally as "superstimulatabilities."

Managing Transitions: Quitting Your Job To Start A Business
By Marie Forleo
You've got a new love and you're totally smitten.
Day and night, it's all you can think of. Every waking hour, you obsess about the next time you'll get to . . . do it.
That's right, baby. It's your hot new business and it's ready for action.
But here's your passion pickle.
Despite how bad you want it, you can't go all the way.
Why?
You've got another three months working that pesky day job that's paying your bills!

A simple dictionary definition of envy is "a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, possessions, etc."
Envy can be an insidious feeling, with a collection of attitudes and beliefs that impact our creative energy and motivation.
In his book Creativity for Life: Practical Advice on the Artist's Personality, and Career, creativity coach and writer Eric Maisel, PhD gives a concrete example:
"An artist's envy may manifest itself in any number of ways. In the past she may have loved to read; now she avoids contemporary fiction completely. All living authors have become her rivals. Or she may avidly read contemporary fiction, but only to assure herself that it's bad. Or she may read only the works of an author she knows is an alcoholic or or near death -- a rival she can pity or feel superior to."

 Books for the Creative Mind
"Reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Anyone who reads too much and uses their own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking." - Albert Einstein
"There is creative reading as well as creative writing." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Here is a brief list of books that will hopefully keep you thinking creatively and help develop creativity personally, as well as in educational and business settings.

Rooney Mara on the Extra Intelligent and Intense Lisbeth Salander
Lisbeth Salander is one of the most intriguing and powerful characters in literature, and both Rooney Mara in the new movie of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Noomi Rapace in the 2009 Danish version, bring to life a richly complex and dynamic young woman.
The "extra intelligent and intense" of my title is a reference to the book: Enjoying the Gift of Being Uncommon: Extra Intelligent, Intense, and Effective, by Willem Kuipers.
In her article (a guest post on my High Ability site) 3 Things To Learn From The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - A Gifted Trauma Survivor, psychotherapist Lisa Erickson writes about the connections of this character with gifted teens and adults...

Jessica Chastain: "I'm not an actor to be a personality."
Jessica Chastain once commented about her unusual appearance and seeking roles: "When I first moved to LA, it was very difficult. All the casting directors didn't know what to do with me, with the way I looked.
"I'm not blonde with tanned skin and tall and skinny. I looked very different - and they said I looked like I was from another time." (imdb.com)
A recent newspaper article notes she has since gained acclaim for her work and has at least three films putting her in Oscar contention: "Take Shelter," "The Help" and "The Tree of Life."

 Developing Creativity: Writing With Patience
"And still it is not enough to have memories. One must be able to forget them when they are many, and one must have the great patience to wait until they come again. For it is not yet the memories themselves. Not until they have turned to blood within us, to glance, to gesture, nameless and no longer to be distinguished from ourselves-not until then can it happen that in a most rare hour the first word of a verse arises in their midst and goes forth from them."
Rainer Maria Rilke, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge
"Patience is a somewhat devalued commodity. Particularly among those who ought to know better - writers themselves." - Dennis Palumbo
Formerly a Hollywood screenwriter, Dennis Palumbo is now a licensed psychotherapist in private practice, specializing in creative issues.

The Gifts of Imperfection
I
wish my nose was smaller. I feel guilty every time I leave my kids in
day care. I'm afraid to say what I really think. I hate these thunder
thighs. I should be married by now. I sounded so dumb. Whether we fixate

What's wrong with goal-setting?
By Kenneth W. Christian, Ph.D.
Now it hit me that any number of people in the audience for my talk had come to an open microphone and in some way spoken of their goals as if they were anything but real destinations they were going to reach.
Listen folks. Talking about goals won't get you there any more than going to church will get you to heaven.

Better Thinking: Brain Games For Cognitive Training
One piece of good news is that using the Internet, particularly searching the Web, can slow our normal age-related cognitive decline. Googling is good for your brain.
As Dr. Gary Small, Director of UCLA's Memory Clinic and Center on Aging, said in an interview, Our study 'Your brain on Google: Patterns of cerebral activation during Internet searching' showed that Internet savvy older adults had significantly greater neural activity searching online compared with internet naive controls.
A review article on brain training technology in Scientific American Mind quoted Michael Merzenich, a neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco.
Age-related cognitive decline, Merzenich says, is a combination of physical changes and negative brain plasticity. A way to combat that is to train regularly using any of an increasingly wide range of software products designed expressly for the purpose, says Merzenich, who founded Posit Science, which makes one such package.

 Video Gaming for Mental Health
When the player becomes stressed or fearful, the game will increase in intensity and difficulty. When the player calms himself, the game returns to its default state.
-Game designer Erin Reynolds
There are many different sorts of video games, and many studies on their psychological and social impacts - research that is often critical or conflicting.
Gaming is not of any particular interest to me, but I was intrigued with a recent newspaper report about Erin Reynolds, a USC cinematic arts graduate student, and her team who are developing a video game that uses heart-rate sensors to help players learn to stay calm as they wind their way through a decrepit house filled with their characters' horrific memories.

Perfectionism and Brene Brown on The Gifts of Imperfection
Perfectionism can be an unhealthy way to try to satisfy distorted ego needs or defuse shame or low self-esteem, for example - but it is a simple name for what can be a complex set of drives and attitudes that can also fuel our pursuit of excellence and motivate social change.
Hilary Swank: The great thing about my Oscar was when I received it, they put the nameplate on with my name crooked, and I went home and I was like, 'I am going to have to take that back and have them fix it.'
Then I said to myself, 'This reminds me that I'm not perfect, my performance wasn't really perfect, and that I still have a lot to learn.' To a lot of people, this represents perfection and it's not. (About her Academy Award for Boys Don't Cry.)

Your Creative Brain: Seven Steps to Maximize Imagination, Productivity, and Innovation in Your Life
by Shelley Carson, PhD

Harvard Health Publications. This provocative book reveals why sitting in front of a light box can increase your creativity more than listening to a Bach concerto as example. The author Shelley H. Carson, a Harvard psychologist, explains that creativity isn't something only scientists, investors, artists, writers, and musicians enjoy; in fact, all of us use our creative brains every day at home and at work. Each of us has the ability to increase our mental functioning and creativity by learning to move flexibly among several brain states related to creativity, productivity, and innovation.

Flourish: A Visionary New Understanding of Happiness and Well-being
by Martin E. P. Seligman

This book will help you flourish. With this unprecedented promise, internationally esteemed psychologist Martin Seligman begins Flourish, his first book in ten years--and the first to present his dynamic new concept of what well-being really is. Traditionally, the goal of psychology has been to relieve human suffering, but the goal of the Positive Psychology movement, which Dr. Seligman has led for fifteen years, is different--it's about actually raising the bar for the human condition.

Writing from the Inside Out: Transforming Your Psychological Blocks to Release the Writer Within
by Dennis Palumbo, M.A., MFT

Dennis Palumbo provides a sense of community in the isolation of writing, of knowing that we are not alone on this uncharted and privileged journey. He shows us that our shared struggles, fears, and triumphs are the very soul of the art and craft of writing.
--Bruce Joel Rubin, screenwriter, Ghost and Deep Impact.

How to Think like Leonardo Da Vinci: Seven Steps to Genius Every Day
by Michael J. Gelb.

Acclaimed author Michael J. Gelb, who has helped thousands of people expand their minds to accomplish more than they ever thought possible, shows you how. Drawing on Da Vinci's notebooks, inventions, and legendary works of art, Gelb introduces Seven Da Vincian Principles--the essential elements of genius--from curiosità, the insatiably curious approach to life to connessione, the appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things.

Renaissance Business
By Emilie Wapnick

Would I have to settle on a practical job and pursue my various passions on the side or choose among my interests and just commit to one thing? Both options made me my heart ache... I knew I could be doing more - that I had more to offer the world. Renaissance Business is the story of how I brought all of my interests together, and how you can do the same.

Mastering Creative Anxiety: 24 Lessons for Writers, Painters, Musicians, and Actors from America's Foremost Creativity Coach
by Eric Maisel, PhD

In his decades as a psychotherapist and creativity coach, Eric Maisel has found a common thread behind what often gets labeled writer's block, procrastination, or stage fright. It's the particular anxiety that, paradoxically, keeps creators from doing, completing, or sharing the work they are driven toward. This creative anxiety can take the form of avoiding the work, declaring it not good enough, or failing to market it -- and it can cripple creators for decades, even lifetimes. But Maisel has learned what sets successful creators apart. He shares these strategies here, including artist-specific stress management; how to work despite bruised egos, day jobs, and other inevitable frustrations; and what not to do to deal with anxiety. Implementing these 24 lessons replaces the pain of not creating with the profound rewards of free artistic self-expression.

Brainstorm: Harnessing the Power of Productive Obsessions
by Eric Maisel, PhD and Ann Maisel

It's true: a mind is a terrible thing to waste. Yet that's what we do when we spend our weekend -- and neurons -- reliving a workplace squabble, spend a family visit chewing over childhood issues, or spend hours beating ourselves up when someone brings one of our own long-held (but never worked on) ideas to fruition. This kind of obsessing gets us, like a hamster on a wheel, nowhere. But as noted creativity expert Eric Maisel asserts, obsessing productively leads to fulfillment rather than frustration. A productive obsession, whether an idea for a novel, a business, or a vaccine, is chosen deliberately and pursued with determination. In this provocative, practical guide, Maisel coaches you to use the tendency to obsess to your creative advantage, fulfilling both your promise and your promises to yourself.

Steve Jobs
by Walter Isaacson.

Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years--as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues--Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology.

Packed full of insights and resources for the creative life, this book offers new ways to thrive as a creative person. I highly recommend it as a resource for anyone who wants to understand the psychology behind our creative drive. - Cynthia Morris, Writing and creativity coach

Being Highly Sensitive and Creative
A mini report for Kindle

Many creative people recognize they are unusually sensitive to temperature, sound, touch, color and other sensations, as well as to emotional experiences, both within themselves and in others. Psychologists and neuroscience researchers are finding more confirmation for this trait of sensory processing sensitivity, present in at least fifteen percent of us, and are defining how it relates to creative ability. People can learn to thrive with the personality trait, take better care of themselves, and make use of its positive aspects for creative expression.
