Gimp Smoke Brushes - Animated

They have 12 random samples so you'd be hard pressed to spot repetition and they're incredibly versatile, there's also three versions:

A - Sharp smoke brush

It's basically an updated version of my previous Gimp smoke brush, but with higher quality brushes and a greater range. Feel free to link to any paintings you do with them, I'd love to see how they turned out

I’ve been playing around with the GPL Photo Manipulation tool, GIMP, which is a fantastic alternative to Photoshop. I use the GIMPSHOP version because it’s close to being set up like Photoshop itself. And I’m a huge supporter of Open Source for the masses. If you don’t want to break the bank with Photoshop, you should give GIMP a shot - I don’t think you’ll be sorry you did.

Anyway, I wasn’t thrilled with the brushes available for GIMP, so I decided to try to make my own. Here is my first batch. The vectors are from Vecteezy.com and Vector4Free.com. You are free to use these brushes for personal use.

Hair Brush Set for GIMP

A set of 5 custom hair brushes for GIMP (Using GIMP 2.6)

Work quite nicely when combined with one or more of the set.

Use of pressure sensitive graphics tablet required for full effect.

Hand-Made using brush set as reference, and posted with permission.

Instructions: Open each individual file with GIMP (after GIMP start-up), and then go to edit>copy, and then edit>paste as>new Brush. Name the brush and set the spacing at zero. After this is done your new brushes should be displayed in the brush menu. Hope this helps!

Edit When I asked if I could re-create these brushes for GIMP, I was in no way expecting this kind of feedback (650+ faves and 9,000+ pageviews in 24 hours). I want to thank you all for the favorites. All I can say is wow, thanks guys! I'm so glad I could help.

You can now use these brushes however you like, they have been around for years now and I'm happy for to leave them for free open use. Go nuts!

Credit is always preferred, but you're free to use them however you like.

Many ask how I created the effect in the preview image:

1. When you use your brush, paint in black on a new transparent layer.
2. Then, select all the contents of that layer (should show marching ants around most of your brush image or "stamp")
3. Then, create a new transparent layer and fill the selection with a gradient or colour of your choice. You can hide the layer with the black stamp or brush on it.

I made some Gimp brushes!! I made these because I never found any Gimp brushes that were feathers...maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but oh well. This is my first time making brushes. So please don't be too hard on me...and I ran out of ideas after the fourth brush, so that's why there's only four of them...these are probably the only set of brushes I'll make, unless ideas come into my mind and I get obsessed with making them. My little brother said they really looked like feathers, so maybe that will also encourage me to make more ^^

(If you use them, then you have to give me credit!! I'm not greedy, it's just the way of life.)

PHOTOSHOP USERS
The archive now has both .gbr and .png files in it. The .png files are for Photoshop users so they can possibly save down the brushes on their own. I don't have the software to create .abr files.

HOW TO INSTALL

Best used with this [link] Gimp version, which I truly recommend. It has everything I used to miss in Gimp, such as smooth pressure sensitivity on brushes and colour blending.

EDIT 8 Dec 2009: The newest Gimp version makes these brushes work just as well without the Gimp Painter features. Gimp has come a long way in a short time!

Most of these brushes are made out of thin air, but I've had uses for them

1. The crescent shaped brush is my favourite. It leaves a hollow line, which can be made to look like a snake in just one stroke, but I haven't painted any snakes yet

I use it for almost everything, but mostly sketching, smudging highlights on hair and it's nice for skin painting as well when used with the blending brush.

2. A normal 50px round brush, with the spacing set to 1 so you don't end up with those ugly, visible circles that the original brushes do. It may lag a bit.

3. I don't use this brush very often. As you can see in the preview, it can do many things. The blob to the top looks somewhat like leaves and could be used for trees/bushes. Below I have made three strokes side by side and it almost looks like some sort of chainmail.

4. Another texture-ish brush. I've used it for cloth before.

5. A lovely soft brush that I use when I want a more delicate round brush.

6. A wispy sort of brush. Quite nice to use as eraser to fade away objects.

7. My favourite sketching brush number one. Much the same like a normal round brush, but with smoother edges.

I decided to do another. Actually, I decided a year or two ago, but I never got around to doing it. This pack is significantly smaller than the first, housing only ten to the first's twenty, but they're made mostly to compliment the others: nearly every brush in this pack is rather large compared to the first, and are more anti-aliased.

If you're wondering, I did the image using entirely the ten brushes (aside from the obvious). For the hell of it, because I'm on winter break from college and am bored out of my mind.

Update: For clarification---and I should have done this long ago--I don't care how these brushes are used, in what images you use them in, or if you've printed them out or hung them on your wall or for use as toilet paper; however, if you plan to place these on your website, please give credit where credit is due (a link to my website [link] is fine, or a link to my Deviant Art page).

Gimp Furr Brushes

Just for furr and hair.
Some brushes I made, others I adapted.

Use the smudge tool with these also.

Instructions:

1) Click the "Download" Button to your Right.
2) Save to folder of your choice
3) Unzip the contents
4) Just place them into (copy to) your Gimp brushes folder and chose them from the brushes menu.
(in Linux it is in: /home/<your username>/.gimp-2.2, in Windows it's in C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\.gimp-2.2)

You may also have to check off a box (or make sure it's checked off) in the "Folders" section of Gimp (Start Gimp up > File > Preferences > Go down to "Folders" and there will be check boxes that you have to click on.) Otherwise, the contents of the Brushes folder will not show up.

put them in C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\.gimp-2.6\brushes.
Or even better is add new folders and link them from the Gimp preferences .( Edit/preferences/folder )
