Greetings all!

You may have noticed that our website loads up over https:// once again and, well, it's true. A brand new shiny certificate has been installed for HTTPS traffic to devio.us and www.devio.us (including all /~user directories), as well as being installed in Postfix and Dovecot for SMTPS and IMAPS connections (respectively). Additionally, the fingerprint was added to our fingerprints list.

And speaking of upgraded security protocols, I just want to remind users that with our upgrade to OpenBSD 5.8 came OpenSSH 7.0 which deprecated (and disabled) support for DSA keys.

Let us know if you have any questions, trouble, etc.

Don't worry, your data is fine--we do routine backups.
We took Wolfman down for a few days last week in response to the disk problems.

Hi deviants --

I spent a good bit of time Spring cleaning on wolfman this weekend. While we'd all love an upgrade to OpenBSD 5.7, that's really not something we should do until we have people physically standing around the box. So until then, here's some updates for software to their -current versions:
coreutils
csh
curl
emacs
g++
gmake
joe
ksh
lunzip
lynx
lzip
mc
moe
nano
ne
ninja
pax/cpio/tar
seed7
tmux
the_silver_searcher (ag)
vim
weechat
wget
wtf
zsh

Because lynx is a bit different--having moved from base to ports--the in-base version of lynx has been kept. You can run olynx to get the older version or lynx for the newer one.

You can see the complete installed packages list, with version number, on our packages page.

Enjoy the warm weather!

~Brian

Seasons greetings!

Oh, wait, that can't be right...

April fools!

No, still not right... I'll just play this safe.

Hello all!

We've upgraded OpenSSH to 6.8 to take advantage of the bug fixes and improvements. This means a couple of new things to our users:

We've added an ed25519 host key.

While we were at it, we added a page listing all of our fingerprints.

And added SSHFP DNS records for those using VerifyHostKeyDNS in their SSH configuration.

The new OpenSSH is installed in /usr/local. Be sure you have /usr/local/bin in your $PATH ahead of /usr/bin

Odds And Ends:

Our esteemed bcallah@ has been busy spreading the OpenBSD love, with a great interview on the BSDTalk podcast, and a brief talk entitled Welcome to OpenBSD!

We had some connectivity issues in the past weeks, but we are currently back up and better than ever.

Our IRC channel is still the greatest place this side of Alderaa... well shoot.

~ A Wolfman always pays his corn-debts.

New software and new admin!

Hey devio.us --

Poking in here to say hello. I'm the newest admin around these parts. I go by Brian or bcallah on IRC (where I'm also known as the IRC op who's always yelling at people). I'm a real-life OpenBSD developer (bcallah@) so I'm on the devio.us team mostly to keep software up-to-date.

So what's new? For one, I've added a whole lot of new packages to Wolfman:
bluemoon - console-based 52-card solitare game
cgames - free console games suite (cblocks, cmines, csokoban)
cpat - curses based solitare collection suite
ee - easy to use text editor
le - text editor inspired by Norton Commander
libcaca - color ascii art library
liberalcrimesquad - politics and government game with liberal bias (crimesquad)
lookat - user-friendly text pager
moe - powerful and user-friendly console text editor
ne - nice console editor
the_silver_searcher - code searching tool, with a focus on speed (ag)
toilet - banner art generator with Unicode font and color support
zile - lightweight Emacs clone

Also updated yesterday was node.js to the latest version in OpenBSD -current. For keybase users, it means you can use the newest keybase on Wolfman again.

I sometimes use Wolfman as a testing ground for new ports I plan on committing to the OpenBSD tree. Stop by IRC to say hi and find out if there are any "devio.us exclusives."

~Brian

Good news, everybody!

We're strong believers in GnuPG/PGP signing and public key cryptography. Recently, the folks at keybase.io have rolled out a service to simplify public key exchange, signing, verification and encryption/decryption for everybody. Naturally, we've installed the keybase client, and we encourage everyone to sign up.

We've gone a step further as well. You can now verify your personal web space by using http://$username.devio.us. Just place the keybase.txt file in your ~/public_html/ directory, that's it.

Oh boy... it's been a while since the last update and a lot has changed.

Without wasting too much time, here is where we are at:

1. We have closed down registrations until our new servers are fully implemented and the migration is completed
2. All 4 of our new servers are up and running
3. We are in the process of migrating DNS over to our new servers - this should be seamless and should be completed within a day or two
4. We plan on providing much more frequent updates until the migration is completed

With that said - we are extremely excited to get this going. Besides new shiny servers, there is a lot in store - centralized authentication between all servers (public boxes and our premium machine), high availability email, web services, domain hosting for premium users, larger space allocations and way, way more stability. Oh and I almost forgot - a new site!

Certainly, the closer we get to completion - the more details we'll post.

Talk soon!

Step #1 of Operation Facelift

During our transition to the new setup, we will need to take down the current wolfman server and redeploy Devio.us onto temporary hardware. As noted in the previous post, our goal is to reuse the current 'wolfman' server as a backend storage server for the rest of the machines.

Due to this, we will be taking 'wolfman' down next Friday (July 8th) at 8:00PM EST. The maintenance window is set for 8:00PM - 12:00AM, however we expect to be done in under 2 hours. Once the maintenance is complete - devio.us will be running off of temporary hardware until the final switch to the new server setup.

Secondly - we will be performing a rudimentary account clean up. Specifically, all accounts that are 6 months+ old and have never logged in, will be purged.

We will post another notice (and some pictures of our new gear) prior to the actual maintenance.

EDIT: We are still on for the maintenance tonight at 8PM EST. See you all on the temp hardware!
