Connecting Your Apps with Database

On the feedback of students, on 6th October 2011, DevNext volunteers at NED organized a free session for students of Computer and Information System (CIS) to help them in their project work and to especially answer their “How to” queries in connecting their applications with different database systems such as MS SQL Server, MySQL, and Oracle.

Sessions on Web Development using ASP.NET

On request of students from NED University of Engineering and Technology, DevNext User Group recently organized two day sessions on Web Development using ASP.NET at NED University. The sessions were held on 12th and 19th March, 2011.

The purpose of facilitating such sessions was to provide students firm understanding of web architecture and development using HTML, JavaScript, CSS and ASP.NET.

As the new academic year begins, DevNext volunteers at NED University had a small meet up to discuss about the role of new volunteer force of DevNext at NED.

Adil Mughal, DevNext User Group Leader, discussed with new volunteers about the User Groups, INETA, and DevNext history in NED. Adil talked about how DevNext is serving students by providing a platform for them and what they can do to serve the students community.

As always, It is great having an interaction with future engineers. We hope that new volunteers will play a better role in serving their University and community.

Windows Development Using C++

Technical Discussion on Windows Development using C++ was being held at N.E.D. University for Second Year students on June 1, 2010 specifically to provide them help for developing their Object Oriented Programming Project. We had invited Mr.Shoaib Surya,Lead Software Engineer at Folio3 (Pvt.) as a volunteer speaker for this session.

At first, students were being given introduction to Win32 API.Net. API (Application Programmers Interface) is a set of predefined Windows functions used to control the appearance and behavior of every Windows element (from the outlook of the desktop window to the allocation of memory for a new process). Between them, these functions encapsulate the entire functionality of the Windows environment. So we can consider API as the native code of Windows. Mr.Shoaib then compared Win32 API & Win6 API followed by the comparison between Unicode and ASCII code.

Next to it, Difference between features of C and Visual C++ was highlighted. Basic Difference between C and C++ is in Data Types .Moreover, C++ is an Object Oriented Programming language unlike C.C++ is by far the most powerful language and for that reason is most effective for heavy duty programming. It is also probably the hardest to learn. But for building Windows Application, C++ is the best choice.

Also, Microsoft Foundation Classes, formation of a pop window using MFC and two major instances of MFC-Winmain & WinProc were being discussed briefly.

After that, demo on how to build simple text editor, a Windows Application using C++ was given.

In Question and Answer session, Mr.Shoaib gave Demo on building web form, console and C++ Library applications. He also showed Students how to include pictures and to connect database with the application.

In short , this event proved to be of great help in enlightening vision of students how to build Windows Application using C++.Further sessions on this topic will help building a solid foundation and expertise in students in the area of Windows Development using C++.

He holds 5+ years of experience in software development, mostly using C++, and has been working in developing enterprise-level software products that include Windows desktop applications, Windows Services, web applications, ActiveX controls, among other things. His primary focus and interest has been the Windows platform, but he has also been vastly involved in platform-independent C++ coding.
Shoaib did his BS (Computer Science) from Karachi University and later also taught the course of Object-Oriented Programming as a visiting faculty member there.

How we build applications in Industry - UIT

DevNext organized another event, this time at Usman Institute of Technology (UIT), on “How we build web applications in Industry” on 14th April, 2010. The topic was presented by Adil Mughal. If you attended the event, please take out few minutes to fill the feedback form.

The objective behind the session was to help students in understanding how the web applications are build professionally in the industry and what are the issues in traditional simple approach what we follow in academic projects.

The students were introduced how industry follow layer/tier based approach. Why do we need to separate styling in CSS, advantage of Master Pages, separate business logic and data access etc. The speaker also compared the pros and cons of simple + industry approach.

Web Programming Concepts with ASP.NET

We are excited to share with you that DevNext volunteers at NED University organized a session on “Web Programming Concepts using ASP.NET” on 3rd April, 2010. If you attended the event, please take out few minutes to fill the feedback form.

The event was exclusively for NED Students and focused on understanding on how web works and what is going on behind the scene when you create a web page and call it with browser. In this regard, we invited two speakers from Industry 1) Adil Ahmed Mughal, who is also DevNext user group leader and 2) Namrah Arif, who works at folio3 and a graduate of NED University.

We were pleased to see participation from the NED students. Even though the room was full, some of the students attended the event by sitting on the floor. We really appreciate your interest and that really boost us in organizing community events.

The session agenda was divided in two parts. First, the web programming fundamentals and Second, ASP.NET.

The speakers started the discussion by introducing HTTP Request and what happens under the hood when a client browser request for the web page followed by the discussion on HTTP GET/POST commands, HTML Forms and Role of Web Server. The session become really interactive as the students were asking plenty number questions to speakers.

The second part covered the discussion on ASP.NET Features and how ASP.NET facilitates programmers by automatically handling underlying things and provide other facilities to programmer such as Tooling/designer, Postbacks, Event driven, HTML forms, Viewstate, Controls abstraction, Rapid development etc.

Last but not least, Adil elaborated about the difference between ASP.NET Web Forms and ASP.NET MVC and also which is appropriate in which situation.

We would like to thank speakers and all the students for taking out time and interest in participating in the event. Final Year Project (FYP)

From time to time, I receive emails and concerns of students regarding Final Year Project (FYP). And we even get request for organizing events on FYP. At the start of the year, it’s mostly NEDians that ping us and in summer, students from FAST-NUCES, University of Karachi, Bahria University send us their queries.

And mostly these queries are related to

What we should do in the FYP
Can you give us any idea?
What if we want to participate in Imagine Cup?
We want to do something good in FYP.
Tell us the technology on which we develop Final Year Project

So I thought maybe its good time to write a detail post on blog about what I feel about FYP and answer to some of the common concerns student raise.

Why Final Year Project Matters?

I always emphasize on the importance of Final Year Project (FYP) and we can say it’s one of the most important aspects of your degree. It is the point where you can apply knowledge or what you have been learning in the past few years. It is the point that creates an ordinary graduate vs. an entrepreneur. It is the point that creates meaning of your degree and your existence as an engineer. It is the way of getting exposure and experience of what real world problems are, if done properly. It will inevitably be used as a gateway to industry and to discriminate YOU among your peers.

What you can do in FYP?

Final year project usually span across 6 months to 1 year. I recommend you to take it seriously and do something hard, so don’t do just simple websites or simple ABC management system. Do something which you are passionate about and that makes you exciting, don’t get afraid, and accept big challenges. Utilize technology and go beyond what was not achievable before time.

Make a meaning: Try to solve real life issues, it might be big or small, but at the end of the project it must contribute in some manner to the society. Also, don’t delay it till the end of semester/year to work on FYP because in that case it will be nearly a piece of garbage not creating any meaning.

Today it has been three years from the start of DevNext...I would like to congratulate all the people who belong to DevNext...the founder Ali Raza Shaikh, User Group Leader Adil Ahmed Mughal, all volunteers, speakers, participants and off course the sponsors!

User Groups And DevNext

User groups started in the early days of mainframe computers, as a way to share sometimes hard-won knowledge and useful software, usually written by end users independently of the factory-supplied programming efforts. SHARE, a user group originated by aerospace industry corporate users of IBM mainframe computers, was founded in 1955 and is the oldest computer user group still active. DECUS, the DEC User's Society, was founded in 1961 and its descendant organization still operates. The Computer Measurement Group (CMG) was founded in 1974 by systems professionals with a common interest in (mainframe) capacity management, and continues today with a much broader mission. The first UNIX user's group organized in 1978. Users' groups began to proliferate with the microcomputer revolution of the late 1970s and early 1980s as hobbyists united to help each other with programming and configuration and use of hardware and software

Especially prior to the emergence of the World Wide Web, obtaining technical assistance with computers was often onerous, while computer clubs would gladly provide free technical support.

There are people out there in this world, and there are communities, societies, groups and common congregations at every geographically located place, and spot, where people try to find the notion full meaning of the word “innovate”. Where they try or expect at a time, when there is little much left, owning much to the constraints, the hard times of any troubled economy, when they realize the fact that something needs to be done, something needs to be acted on and emphasized, even though they don’t know how they can actually do it, or what rudimentarily defined obstacles, hindrances, and unknown issues can actually lie in their path. It was quoted once, when a small group of people believed in hope in the face of difficulty. Hope in the face of uncertainty as well:

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek!”

In line with the thrust of some people’s faith and glory of their courage, they have certainly tried their best to play an effective and meaningful role in creating a knowledge based society in Pakistan.

In furtherance of these general objectives, they remain to maintain that focus upon acquisition and propagation of cutting edge science and technologies. Recognizing the fact that Information Technology is having a profound impact upon almost every aspect of human activity and changing the shape of our future.

I think that DevNext can be more precisely be described as a galactic community of life's beings, independent of age, race or societal orientation, which strives across borders for freedom of information. In common with other user groups devoted to a broad range of products or technologies, the user group provides education, networking, and leadership opportunities for its members. They were interested in maintaining a regular, open forum for people to get together to work on knowledge sharing and making technology exploration more accessible to everyone. In general, the group stands up for more transparency in between student bodies, freedom of information and a human right to communication. Supporting the principles of the technology ethic, the group also supports for free access to knowledge and technological infrastructure for everybody. The group is more widely known for its public demonstrations, such as seminars, open house sessions, discussion talks and forum meetings. It has evolved into a forum for exchanging technical information about programming languages, operating systems, database systems, and user experiences for enterprise users of small, medium, and large-scale software technologies such as WPF, the .NET enigma, e-banking solutions, and many other emerging names in the technology domain paradigm. The members of this group exist to give and share support and advice in between them. Many have regular meetings often with a presentation on a certain topic and most have regular email communication in between times. The community members typically meet once per month in facilities freely provided by universities, colleges, community centers. Members are encouraged to give presentations on personal projects as well as anything they are interested in or would like to contribute.

.NET Day – Event Summary

We had a fantastic event last weekend, on 11th July, DevNext and IEEE-CS (FAST-NU) organized a full day free event “.NET Day” for students. The response from students was really outstanding. The event comprises of one workshop followed by two sessions.

The event started at 10:30 AM with introductory session by IEEE-CS, which was of around 10 minutes, followed by the workshop on “Network Programming in .NET” by Munir Usman (Microsoft MVP).

Munir started from the network fundamentals and then gradually introducing .NET classes supporting socket communication, TcpClient and streaming. The students were given a demonstration on how to build client and server and then respective hands on. Students were really involved and Munir kept the session interactive.

Finally, Munir distributed some Microsoft bags to students for those who participated actively in the session. Students were really enthusiastic about the goodies.

The next session was on Visual Studio 2008 Tips and Tricks by Adil Mughal (Microsoft MVP). Visual Studio is one of the most powerful IDE and yet many developers don’t know features that are available and using different techniques and shortcuts developers can really enhance their productivity. Code Navigation, Refactoring, Code Snippets and Debugging were the major topics discussed in the session.

In the end the speaker introduces the Visual Studio SDK for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and demonstrate that how one can develop and integrate a custom menu button in the Visual Studio 2008 SP1.

And then the lunch :)

The last session was given by Adnan Amin(Microsoft Certified Trainer) on “AJAX with ASP.NET”. The speaker first introduced the concept of AJAX and how underlying communication occur between client and server followed by a demo using javascript and web services.

Adnan then introduced ASP.NET AJAX and discussed how it ease developer by automatically handling underlying javascript etc. In the end a demo was given of using Script Manager and Update Panel controls that handles AJAX underlying working.

Finally, Shields were distributed by IEEE-CS, FAST-NU, to the speakers. Talha Izhar from Innovations and Usman Madni from TPS visited the event as Guest. We would like to thank them for their presence and valuable time.

About Speakers:

Adnan Amin is Microsoft Certified Trainer and Sr. Software Engineer at KalSoft Ltd. with four years of experience on Microsoft Technologies. Adnan is Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD) for Web and Technology Specialist (MCTS) for Desktop based applications. he is involved in trainings with KalSoft for the last two years and has given several MOC based and custom trainings. He has experience of giving trainings on latest Microsoft Technologies and his major areas of trainings are Microsoft ASP.NET 3.5, C Sharp 3.0 and Silverlight.

Munir Usman is Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) in Visual C# and an active member in Microsoft developer communities in Pakistan. He has an experienced .NET developer and has worked in Banking and Financial sector. He has recently started a company, Pi Labs, which does software development for web and mobile platform. He has also been involved in organizing a number of technical conferences, seminars, workshops and programming competitions. Technical Skills
1. Past experience of providing technical support for software applications
2. Good knowledge of using mobile phone apps - email client, games, web browsing
3. Good knowledge of Networking technologies - TCP/IP, Wi-Fi, LAN & WAN
4. Preferably experience of MAC and iPhone

Language Skills
1. Able to speak fluent English
2. Able to write professional emails
3. Available shifts
4. Night shift options: 10pm to 2am, 2am to 6am or 10pm to 6am
5. Day shift options: Noon to 4pm, 4pm to 8pm or Noon to 8pm

After leading the group for 2.5 years, I think it’s the time to move on, time to let the fresh blood lead your vision and the time to set some high goals. So, it’s give me pleasure to announce “Adil Mughal” as the new User Group Leader for DevNext. I will still be looking after the events and activities of DevNext as Founder.

So, a little bit about the new leader. Adil Mughal is currently working as Development Officer at Telenor Pakistan. Earlier he was working as Software Engineer at KalSoft Private Limited. He is Microsoft Certified Professional and Professional Member of ACM. He is also leading International .NET Association (INETA) user group, “Emerging .NET Devs” (http://edotnetdevs.wordpress.com) and often participates as speaker in different events on behalf of INETA and Microsoft. He frequently do blogging at http://adilamughal.blogspot.com

I still remember the day when it all started back in January 2007. DevNext started with a vision, a vision to help students, a vision to help professionals and educators, a vision to reduce the industry- academia gap and a vision of making learning a culture. Two and half years down the road, I think we have achieved something in pursuit of our vision but there are still a lot of things that need to be done. DevNext improved a lot! Seriously I was not aware that just a small initiative will be highly appreciated across the industry and academia. I am looking forward for more and more success for DevNext. InshAllah!
