TODAY’S VERSE
But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us.
II Corinthians 7:6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to become discouraged. Finances, health, relationships, career, family, all of them can present us with tremendous challenges and ample opportunities for discouragement. The good news is that there is someone bigger than our situation. Paul knew it. He writes, “When we arrived in Macedonia, there was no rest for us. We faced conflict from every direction, with battles on the outside and fear on the inside.” And then he adds the phrase that changes everything. He writes, “But God.” It doesn’t get any better than that. He writes, “But God who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us.” In this case, God did it through the arrival of Titus to minister with Paul. I don’t know how God will do it for you, but today you have the God who encourages the discouraged. Watch for it; let Him encourage you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, You are the great encourager. I pray that in Your own marvelous way, You would encourage my heart today. In Jesus’ name.
Amen

TODAY’S VERSE
So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.
I Peter 4:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Suffering is never easy. It is bad enough when it is the result of our own doing. But it is even more difficult to handle when we are suffering and haven’t done anything wrong. What do we do? It seems so unfair. Our first inclination is to get angry or perhaps give up. Maybe it is to compromise what we believe, so the pressure goes away. Peter knew what suffering for righteousness sake was. He and the early Christians suffered much persecution. So Peter wrote to the Christians and what he wrote applies to us today. He said to “keep on doing what is right.” Don’t compromise. Don’t give up. Don’t get revenge. Instead, Peter admonishes us to “trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.” Today, trust God, commit your way to Him, and do right. God will not fail you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, You know my situation. Help me to trust You, Lord. Help me to continue to do right. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

TODAY’S VERSE
May you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.
Ephesians 3:18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God illuminated Paul’s heart when he wrote these prophetic words. We need love. But the love we find in this world is not enough. That is why Paul shared the prayer that we would have the power to really grasp God’s love. Beth Moore, in her book Praying God’s Word, writes, “We are not wrong to think we desperately need to be loved. We do. But we are wrong to think we can make anyone love us the way we need to be loved. Our need does not constitute anyone else’s call but God’s.” Paul has thrown down the challenge. It will take a lifetime to try to accomplish, but can you imagine the journey? The thrill? The joy in even beginning to see the width, length, height, and depth of God’s love? Today, ask Jesus Himself to accompany you on such a glorious adventure of discovery.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, please give me the power and help me to understand how wide, long, high, and deep the Heavenly Father’s love for me really is.
AMEN

TODAY’S VERSE
Take control of what I say, O LORD, and guard my lips. Don’t let me drift toward evil or take part in acts of wickedness. Don’t let me share in the delicacies of those who do wrong.
Psalm 141:3-4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Controlling what we say. It is often more challenging than we think. We can preplan, prepare, practice, and still, in the heat of the temptation, we can often say things that we shouldn’t. How much could be prevented if we heeded today’s verse and asked the Lord to take control of our tongue! Saving face, getting revenge, one-upping someone, making up for what we think are inadequacies all start with the mouth. James knew all about the tongue. He wrote, “For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. – And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.” Today, make it a matter of prayer. Dedicate your tongue to God and ask Him to help you choose all the words that will come out of your mouth wisely.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me to guard my tongue. I dedicate it to You and ask that all the words that come out of my mouth today would be for good and to Your glory.
AMEN

TODAY’S VERSE

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.
I Thessalonians 5:11 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Ever been so thirsty you felt parched? You couldn’t wait until you had a glass of water. When you finally took a drink, it was heavenly, refreshing, and brought new life to your body. That is what encouragement does. It is like a cooling salve on a bad burn. A refreshing breeze on a hot, humid day. The laughter of children when in an anxious state. There is something about a person who is with you when all seems lost. Their presence speaks volumes. They comfort you with their empathy in what they say and do. We need encouragement, and God commands us to encourage one another. In fact, the only thing I can think of that is wrong with encouragement is that there isn’t enough! Today, be God’s messenger of hope, love, peace, and joy. People all around you are thirsty for encouragement. Take your love and fill their cup!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for Your encouragement. Help me to be selfless and encourage others in the way You have encouraged me.
AMEN

TODAY’S VERSE
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life can become so complicated. How often do we need wisdom to navigate our way through the various problems we run into? Thankfully, as Christians, we don’t have to go through this alone; we have the Lord. Solomon gives us the secret. He writes that we need to trust in the Lord with all our hearts. However, Solomon knew how hard that was. He warns us that the temptation is to give our problem to God, then take it back and depend on our own understanding. Instead, wise Solomon tells us to seek God’s will in everything we do, and the Lord will show us which way we need to go. Today, turn your situation over to God and leave it there. Trust Him and let Him direct your path.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, forgive me for trying to make it on my own. I need You. I need Your direction in my life. As I seek Your will, please show me the way.
Amen

TODAY’S VERSE
“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.
“Come and see,” said Philip.
John 1:46 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Philip was excited about meeting Jesus, so he found Nathanael and said, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael then said, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” I love Philip’s answer. He says, “Come and see.” I find it very comforting that Jesus was born in a stable with animals around. That he came from a working family, raised in Nazareth, and yet none of this changed who He truly was. He knew who He was, so his past, environment, parentage, earthly status, rejection, nothing distracted Him from His mission. What about you? Is there something in your past, heritage, upbringing, status, or the way others treated you that is hindering you from believing who you are? If you know Jesus as your Savior, then you are a child of God. Believe it, receive it, and don’t let anything, nothing rob you of your significance or mission for God on this earth. Know who You are. You are a royal child and servant of God. Don’t hold back. Go and invite others to “come and see!”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I thank You that You have made me Your child. Thank You that it is not based on status or merit or my earning it. Instead, it is Your grace and mercy that have made me Your own. Help me to believe and receive Your great love for me so I can live out the mission You have for me. In Jesus’ name.
Amen

TODAY’S VERSE
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”
Romans 12:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to allow secular thinking to creep into our everyday lives. David Kinniman, the president of the Barna Group, writes that “we live in a society that values fairness over justice, consuming over creating, fame over accomplishment, glamour over character, image over holiness, and entertainment over discernment.” How true. The Kingdom of God has values that are contrary to those embraced by modern society. So, what can we do? The secret, Paul shares, is to allow God to constantly transform us by changing the way we think. As we pray, read the word, and commune with the Holy Spirit, we will begin to see the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control become realities in our lives. Peter shares that as you gradually increase faith, moral excellence, spiritual knowledge, self-control, patient endurance, Godliness, brotherly affection, and love for everyone, you will be more productive and useful in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. So today, examine your life and let God transform you by changing the way you think.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your Holy Spirit to help me. I am so vulnerable. It is so easy for me to adopt the world’s behavior and customs. Please help renew my mind and make me the person you want me to be.
AMEN

Show Me The Way

TODAY’S VERSE
Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.
Psalms 25:4-5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever been lost? You’re walking in the woods, and suddenly it dawns on you, “I don’t recognize anything, I don’t know what direction I am going.” It is a helpless feeling. The only thing you can think of is, “Do I have a map?” or “Can I figure out what direction will get me to safety?” Guidance is everything when you are lost. You have to trust in something; why not the most reliable source of information? Life is like that, a journey, and we need God to help us find our way. David prayed, “Show me the right path, point out the road for me to follow.” We need to do the same. The more confused we get, the more difficult the situation, the more we need God to lead us in the right direction. Today, seek God’s guidance.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your direction in my life. Show me the way to go. Guide me today as I follow You.
AMEN

TODAY’S VERSE
Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.
Ephesians 4:21-23 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Every day we make choices. Some choices, however, are more subtle than others. For example, the old saying, “Not to decide is to decide already.” Otherwise, if you need to make a choice and you do not say “yes” to it, then you have really chosen against it. It is like that with most of the things that we “lust” after. Lusting implies that we desire something that we cannot (or should not) have at that moment. The trouble, however, is not in the one-time choice to lust. All of us struggle with occasional temptations. Instead, it is the rebound effect that gets us in trouble. You know, get close to something you know is wrong, withdraw, and then rebound, getting closer the next time. It is like the proverbial frog that boils in water, never noticing that the water is gradually getting warmer and warmer. As time goes on, we find ourselves in the grip of the very thing we were trying to avoid. How much better to choose ahead of time not to trifle with those habits, thoughts, and behaviors that lead to trouble. We do this by being quick to repent when we slip and then asking the Holy Spirit to renew our thoughts and attitudes. If we throw off our old sinful nature and our former way of life like we would a burning jacket, and instead, let the Spirit renew our thoughts and attitudes, God can help us discern what tempts us, so we can determine ahead of time to set our limits and boundaries. Today, let us give our various temptations over to God and ask Him to help us overcome them.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, You know that I struggle with temptation and lust and need Your help. Renew my thoughts and attitudes so I can live the way you want me to. Help me continue to say “no” and throw off those things that war against me. In Jesus Name.
AMEN
