Every aspect of life seemed to be polished with style and class down to the crisp autumn leaves rustling in the wind along the stone slabs of the pavement (note: not soggy rubbish strewn across a tarmac-ed road).

The art at galleries such as the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay and the Pompidou centre was terrific, not to mention the style of just ordinary people, who matched perfectly with the creatively rich surroundings.

The image above is painting a vivid picture in my head- a fashionable Brit, embarking on an adventure to Paris in the sunshine, milling around in the gardens- doesn't it make you jealous? Of course, she is only wearing vintage- I can't imagine anything else to be worn in idyllic Paris, surrounded by labyrinths of gracious stone buildings.

This collection epitomises the scene- topped off with one of the most elegant icons of the 21st century- Jean Paul Gaultier perfume. I centered my hunt around antique and vintage stores to look for a small keepsake or trinket to compliment my friends' larger present. Although I eventually settled on a stunning '50s perfume bottle, in the process I discovered the small but magnificent wonders of vintage jewellery.

Although acclaimed to be quite 'awkward' to wear, I think old jewellery can be quite straight-forward to put to any outfit, especially if the chosen piece is something like pearls. It really is quite easy to add an extra timeless, conversation-starter to a formal, or a more casual outfit.

My favourite era of vintage jewellery is the '50s. I am particularly attracted to this decade by the way that '50s jewellery is representative of the unique social etiquette of this time: elegance, splendour, classiness, beauty and so on. In addition, the style of '50s jewellery is just great to look at and wear!

Here are a few examples of typical '50s jewellery (click on the link below each image to navigate to the store where you can buy/view the item in more detail):

A dazzling 1950s diamante and metal necklace

An equally beautiful 1950s bracelet

Vintage 1950s diamante drop earrings-

Although all characterised by one style, these pieces seem to prove that vintage jewellery is wearable and versatile. I can't help picturing how these 3 favourites of mine would look brilliant against black, purple or midnight blue clothes at dinner with friends, family, a wedding, birthday or any other event which requires a jewellery piece to 'set off' an outfit. However, who says these cannot be worn everyday? They would also look incredible against everyday clothes, or at work.

Check out the stores' vast collection of other jewellery ranging from the '20s to '80s- http://www.devoted2vintage.co.uk/women/Costume-Jewellery.html- for other spectacular brooches, earrings, necklaces and bracelets.

Sophie Horwood

Cream of the crop: Dresses

At the moment, there seems to be an extremely relaxed attitude to personal fashion sense. I've noticed myself that I have become much less conscious of the latest cut of dress or style of shoes that I should be wearing. Even flicking through a few magazines, celebrities seem to have jumped on board too. I particularly noticed Pixie Lott, who doesn't necessarily conform to trends and current styles but looks great, and seems to be a pioneer of her own style, uninfluenced by mainstream culture.

Pixie Lott

This is great, I think, as it allows huge room for your own taste and opinion, and is finally a break-away from the media and celebrities dictating what we can or cannot wear!

Therefore in recognition of this I've been browsing through a few dresses from devoted which would make brilliant day or evening dresses. Also, they are all fantastic 'it' dresses: wardrobe essentials.

Firstly, a few beautiful and unique day dresses: this blue butterfly dress from the 50's makes a huge statement, and would be brilliant for a formal evening such as a barbeque, complete with simple sandals perhaps. And of course, teamed with an equally retro (and equally stunning) patent leather handbag.

Or something even brighter and attention-grabbing: this '60s Trevira shift dress has such stunning intricate detailing- diamante detailing to the bodice adds that extra edge, whilst the original bow belt adds shape. This dress would be great for any occasion. For a different stance, I am imagining a very unique image of the dress partnered with a straw hat and leather ankle boots! Proof how versatile vintage dresses can be.

To balance the scales, Devoted2Vintage also have a selection of brilliant dresses for more formal occasions. My favourite is this classic and elegant '60s cocktail dress, which is such a statement- maker on its own that a simple black clutch and black heels will look great. The dress speaks for itself entirely- the embellished bodice compliments the free flowing skirt perfectly, brought together by a bow waist-pincher.

A similar shape dress is this very feminine '50s lace evening gown. To me, this is a dress extremely representative of the '50s. You can almost imagine the original owner back then, visiting diners and that sort of thing. These '50s diamante drop earrings would set off the dress brilliantly.

Personally, I'm looking forward to wearing my own vintage dress to the reading festival in August: an original '60s hippy dress... brilliant!

Sophie Horwood

Michael Jackson 1958- 2009

Of course, Michael Jackson was the King of Pop, an era-led fashion icon, and a musical magician. I literally cannot write in a way which does him justice.

Ironically, since his death I have noticed how many people, myself included, have appreciated Michael Jackson as a musician and an individual far more. Undoubtedly, people have re-found his unparalleled music and everywhere I seem to go, I hear 'The Earth Song' or 'Man in the Mirror'. The re-recognition of his generosity as an avid charity-giver matched dreadfully with his sufferings in his childhood have placed him in a shining new light entirely, refreshing the stale image imprinted on our minds of MJ as a lonely, troubled man stained with child- abuse allegations. Although quite a solemn time, is also quite an uplifting experience to be able to revisit the last incredible 50 years.

Taking a look-back at his life-in-pictures in the papers and on the television and web, I'm sure it has become known to many more people how turbulent and astonishing his life was. His chaotic life certainly raised his name and image to popular culture status, so much so he became a victim of his own publicity. I am myself sitting at my laptop, browsing through Spotify, enjoying some of my favourite MJ songs. But all the while aware of how his melancholic life was plagued with a deep grievance- there was a certain saddness in his eyes which has always seemed apparent in his photographs. And then, shrouded with a strong sense of loneliness, his death occurred.

His life was celebrated as a living legend, not only in music and dance, but also in his sense of fashion. Although a sad sad peroid of time, MJ's death also marks the conclusion of 50 years of ground-breaking fashion. His performances during the '90s were represented strongly by glitter and sequin attire as well as bandages on his hands and fingers:

Pictured here in 1984, wearing iconic aviators and a military/royal-esque jacket, displaying his early unique style perfectly. It is a brilliant book, basically a catalogue of photographs of the 90's under the sub-headings "Movers & Shakers", "Conflict", "New world order", "Pre-millennium tension", "Entertainment", "The Arts", "Pop", "Fashion", "Youth", "Sport", "Children" and "All human life" chronicling the events of the entire decade.

The 1990s were of course, for fashion, a time of Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Princess Diana, and a quickening of the pace of fashion evolution. The arts and fashion became intertwined at this time, with fashion becoming ever more weird and wonderful and the arts moving from the canvas to the wall and the 3-dimensional.

I am quite keen on photography myself and so I find these photographs fascinating as both a snapshot of a certain moment in time and as an insight into fashion.

Although the '90s are not usually classed as "vintage", being too close and too relative to the '00s, many of the styles have not been revived since, or were in fact, revived themselves from later times. Therefore, the '90s were significant in the evolution of style and fashion.

This particular photograph is from a scene of a rave in Ibiza in 1999 clearly the topic being to show the daring bare-cheeked style of this individual.

Here are a further selection of the fashion samples I scanned in from the book synonymous with the '90s:

Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell) wearing a size 6 union- jack dress at the 1997 Brit Awards.

Some lesser-known more underground trends; a camouflage combat skirt, piercings & black hair braids.

An odd combination of military and futuristic true '90s style. As a result, I've had a very personal involvement in the collections of this year's graduates which has been really exciting. Over the previous week I've travelled to Earls Court to see one of the many catwalk shows, surrounded by an exhibition of the most prestigious fashion and textile universities in the country. On Wednesday, June 10th we travelled to the same venue again to be part of the star-studded audience at the Gala show and awards ceremony: the eagerly awaited climax of the entire week. It was utterly surreal to mingle amongst designers such as Giles Deacon and Zandra Rhodes, and models including Claudia Schiffer and Erin O' Conner whilst being waited upon with wine and canapes!

My sister, Emily Horwood was nominated for the Zandra Rhodes catwalk textile award, a tough competition, and only up against two other graduates in the country. She did not win, although the publicity and recongition was equally beneficial. Her collection called 'revive' is based upon using vintage prints patterns and fabrics from the 1940's-1960's as inspiration, clearly mirroring the elegant styles of that eras' dresses in particular. A typical 1950's dress would be a modest knee-length and create an a-typical womanly figure by a tight waist band.

However, in contrast, the textile print was more in-line with contemporary patterns. Since then the business has continued to grow and diversify & as a result had outgrown the original design.

With the help of a web design expert Devoted 2 Vintage have just completed a major re-design of the home page. The brief was to create a striking, ergonomic web page that our customers would find informative and intuitive.

The new web page provides a more structured layout, incorporating the following features:

Brand new Ordering Help number (0845 2997633) enabling customer to speak to their sales staff 7 days a week

Feature promotion box enabling the user to select between women's, men's and accessories

Two item feature boxes, updated regularly to promote new or special items

Message board for customer announcements and promotions

Enews Signup box allowing customers to sign up for special offers

Devoted 2 Vintage hope you like the changes and would love to hear your feedback.

Devoted 2 Vintage will be at the Vintage Vogue Fashion Fair

Photography: a window into time

As you have probably noticed there was no blog last week and for a short while I will be only writing one blog per two weeks. This is all down to the dreaded exam season... my first exam is in a couple of weeks (!!!!) which is a frightening thought. However I will be back to one-a-week straight after my last exam in a few weeks time.

Aside from studying I have been spending some time on photography for my current art project. I particularly like black and white photography and anything that captures a specific moment in time. One of my favourite photographers is Alin Ciortea:

For me, this piece is reminiscent of the 50's or a similar time and this link with fashion and time in photography, I find intriguing. Although quite amateurish, here is a selection of my photography which I have processed myself:

Unfortunately this is a limited hobby of mine and so I don't have the time to create photographs which have a link with fashion such as this by John French, which captures a fashion/time moment:

...by which I mean it is evident that this photograph reflects 1950's fashion. The elements in this photograph are perfectly complimentary of each other and representative of the 1950's as a time of elegance. Pieces include a shimmering diamante brooch, similar to this.

Another example would be this photograph, reflecting mod fashion:

In this snapshot the culture and fashion of "mod" (originally "modernist") circa the 50's and 60's is vibrantly evident with the girls wearing graphic sunglasses and clothes representative of typical fashions coined by Mary Quant's designs. Whilst the guys are wearing typical mod suit jackets with trilby's.

Photography, I find is a fascinating insight into time-frames of fashion and style.

Sophie Horwood

Prom Season

Prom season is upon us; a time spent (for girls at least) trying to source just the right dress. I've found that a great set of guide lines to follow when searching for a prom dress is to aim for a certain look. A vintage look. More precisely, to pursue an icon's look. This way, you are 100% guaranteed to be original (in buying vintage) and distinct (in re-creating a notable look). On a more topical level, it is a money saver (which is really just another excuse to buy a glamorous dress!).

A timeless, elegant style to chose would be that of the obvious- Audrey Hepburn in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' from 1961. This outfit was, and still is, highly representative of the unchanging nature of femininity and grace. So much so that as recent as December 2006 the dress was auctioned off at £467, 200 which set a world record for the price of a dress worn in a film and the necessity for every woman to possess a 'little black dress':

To re-create this look, a simple and glamourous long, black, same-era dress would be beautifully suitable. Or, for a less formal approach- this velvet cocktail dress would be perfect. Delicate pearls complimented by something sparkley and neat hair would set the look off perfectly.

With Hepburn's look, the wearer is also representing something much more profound; Audrey Hepburn was inspired by her war-time experiences into becoming involved in humanitarian work. From 1988 to 1992 she spent her time in the most disadvantaged countries in the world and was a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, earning many awards for her kindness. Her son, Sean Ferrer, said: “Style is a word we use often and for a multitude of purposes. In the case of my mother, Audrey Hepburn, it was the extension of an inner beauty held up by a life of discipline, respect for the other and hope in humanity. If the lines were pure and elegant it was because she believed in the power of simplicity. If there was timelessness it was because she believed in quality and if she still is an icon of style today it is because once she found her look she stayed with it throughout her life.”- a much greater reason to embody her style.

Sophie Horwood

Ian Curtis: 1970's icon

Ian Curtis is predominantly known as the singer of the 70's band Joy Division which he joined in 1976.

Much of Joy Division's publicity is due to Curtis's music; the motivations and inspirations of his interesting lyrics provided a topic for debate which still exists today, fuelled in 1980 by Curtis's suicide as well as his unmedicated epilepsy and depression. His writing was filled with imagery of emotional isolation, death, alienation, and urban decay.

However, I also see Curtis as a figurehead for the 1970's underground fashion scene. His humble sense of style epitomised his uncontrollable life- what was going on around him- encapsulated in the excellent (I think) biopic film 'Control', produced in 2007:

I think this type of fashion- one produced accidentally as a by-product of the wider context- is, undoubtedly, the most fascinating and remarkable.

One of Joy Division's songs 'New Dawn Fades' perfectly illustrates the similarities between his music and style- unadorned yet effectual.

'Control' alongside documenting his life, documents his style. It is interesting to see, I think, that at the beginning of the film, as an average teenager, he is imitating styles of the time- for example applying makeup. Yet as the film develops, his fashion sense does too into independant and unique to him, running paralell with the events of his life spiralling out of control.

Here, it is evident his style is simple and although was not a priority for him, has become one for others:

His parka is clearly purely functional, not unlike this army parka (its sole purpose to be functional) which draws comparisons with Curtis's military-esque bag. This again, shows how his clothing and music are comparable. Curtis typically wore simple shirts with brogues and suit trousers- a look today, that is available to both men and women.

On the 18th May 1980, Curtis hung himself in his house in Macclesfield. Around this time, his health was failing as a result of the epilepsy and attempting to balance his musical ambitions with his failing marriage.

Tony Wilson, whom the band was signed to later said "I'd been warned on a train to London two weeks earlier by Annik [Honoré] (a woman with whom Curtis was having an affair). With the feathers, patterns, beads and bright colours there are hints of the Orient and tribal suggestions both intertwined.

I like this cover; It is a perfect example of how fashions repeat. This broad type of theme is splashed across many catwalks this season, with todays resurrection placing emphasis more on western-style fringing and then diversely, spring-like elegant pieces.

However, as the cold weather is fading (thankfully!) the less-western and more oriental styles are probably much more suited to the warming season, which is my personal favourite, (despite how my fringed "pocahontas" ankle boots seem to be going out of fashion!) The key patterns here seem to be palm trees, feathers and simple patterns with "earthy" and natural colours, but a streak of blue would also not go amiss, adding a modern twist. Aztec patterns are also not uncommon in this season's re-make. This one shoulder, 1950's Marjae-of-Miami dress recognises an oriental and aztec theme- a perfect summer dress, also relative to the upcoming one-shoulder trend. A trend which I find, can transform any dress into something much more graceful and unique.

In contrast, many catwalks are showcasing brighter and stronger colours, patterns and materials, as the Vogue cover examples such as this vibrant 70's mini which is beautifully made and would compliment a simple pair of sandals. Or, this detailed Japanese-like men's shirt which gives a interesting twist on a predominantly female theme. The intricate patterns linked here reminds me instantly of traditional chinese patterns such as this:

...which are fresh and new; matching the changing season perfectly, especially as the clocks here in England will be "springing forward"- time for change! One which I, no doubt, will be embracing- I love this oriental theme!

Sophie Horwood

Edie Sedgwick: fashion icon of the 60's

Edie Sedgwick was an American heiress, thrust into the spotlight as a socialite, model and actress, as well as closely linked with Andy Warhol during the 1960's. This is where her status really rocketed. She appeared in many of his films. Firstly with cameo's in 'Vinyl' and 'Horse', both of which generated so much interest, Warhol decided to focus on Edie altogether. Her famous (and very interesting) short films included 'Poor Little Rich Girl' and 'Kitchen'.

Personally, I love Edie Sedgwick, my opinion of which was mostly and primarily derived from 'Factory Girl':

....but also from posters I had stuck up on the wall years ago of a fashion spread from a magazine headed by the title of 'Factory Girl' (it finally clicked after I had watched the film), with a similar model.

I find her 'underground' persona much more appealing than other mainstream icons of the time, which compliments her fashion-sense perfectly. Not only this but she is free-spirited and fun-loving- an extrovert. Clearly shown in this origonal footage which documents the turbulent lifestyle of New York socialites at this time:

As interesting as her socialities are, Edie Sedgwick not only had a vibrant and brilliant personality, but she was a fashion idol, making her such a rare character by any standards. The famous photograph below of her and Andy Warhol perfectly encapsulates her style: effortless, graceful, glamourous. It almost seems as if there is a mirror between her character and style, as if it is tailor made for her.

Edie coined basic mini shift dresses teamed with black tights, short, dyed-blonde hair and huge chandelier earrings. She mostly wore plain, dark clothing (quite unusual, in my regard, for her character). Her look was basic; yet striking and clearly had an enormous impact on the scene in the 60's. Yet I cannot help but think her fame would not have been possible without her temperament and quality of personality.

However, as expected of many superstars or starlets, Edie's life deteriorated following the break-out from Warhol's social circle. In April 1967 she began shooting her last film 'Ciao! Manhattan', a time marked by frequent returns to psychiatric care. In July 1971 she married Michael Brett Post, a former fellow patient at hospital. On November 15, 1971 she took perscribed medication, dying in her sleep. Her death determined as undetermined/accident/sucide. She was 28.

However, Edie seems to live on in Bob Dylan's 'Just Like a Woman', 'Leopard-Skin, Pill-Box Hat' and purportedly 'Like a Rolling Stone'- two of which are favourite songs of mine which, more positively, ends the topic quite nicely.

Sophie Horwood

<itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:subtitle>Edie Sedgwick was an American heiress, thrust into the spotlight as a socialite, model and actress, as well as closely linked with Andy Warhol during the 1960's. Of course they were all wearing only the latest (and of course, fantastic), with Little Boots, Jaime Winstone and Alice Dellal, just to name three, all wearing iconic attire of vintage fashion.

Although I, myself, am not entirely keen on Alice Dellal the model (left), I praise her leather-jacket-wearing. It wasn’t surprising to see this timeless piece being worn, especially at an event such as the NME awards. Her jacket even seems to be made from a more edgy PVC- a softer, probably less scary version is available here (apologies to any fans); an 80’s original itself. Dellal has completed her 80’s look with fishnets- simple (and of course those amazing sky-scraping heels).

Little Boots (right) has adopted a more disco/mainstream 80’s look- the sequins conjuring images of disco balls and adding that little bit of “pizzazz” to her outfit. Her voluminous hair compliments the clothing perfectly completely the glamorous look, in contrast to Dellal. Little Boots and Dellal, side by side, clearly display two completely separate looks both synonymous with the 1980’s. If your preference is sliding more towards Little Boots, why not check out this similar, original Frank Usher dress.

Florence Welch, in magnificent contrast, was sporting a vibrant pop-art print dress, iconic from the 1950’s and 60’s. Pop art was inspired by popular culture, 'pop' being short for 'popular'. This type of art was characterised by images from comics and advertising. Although I’m not a particular fan of pop art, the meaning behind the art I find extremely interesting which can just show the depth to fashion in terms of a social and historical perspective. Florence’s dress seems similar to Andy Warhol’s famous piece of Marilyn Monroe, ironically reflecting the original meaning of pop art by advertising this piece of popular culture herself by wearing it.

A collection of fantastic pieces it seems were on show at the NME awards. From the purely aesthetical, to the deep and meaningful. I’ve even learnt a little about fashion myself whilst writing!

Sophie Horwood

Luxurious Lived in Leather from Devoted 2 Vintage

New range of Military Clothing from D2V

Brand new for 2009 D2V are really excited to introduce you all to our new carefully selected range of Military Clothing.

Ranging from the classic Mod US M65 Fishtail Parkas and German extreme weather parkas to short, fitted French F2 Field Jackets and German Field jackets, D2V have something for you. Discovering a shop that caters to your unique style can be a boon to every retro clothes hunter as it provides a safe haven filled with exciting items to complete your vintage wardrobe.

A good vintage clothes shop will often be staffed by people who are as passionate about their business as you are about buying their clothing. Such high feelings for vintage are great because any questions you have should be easily answered by these helpful staff members. Also, frequent visitors and customers who strike a bond or friendship with the seller can then discuss their individual needs and possibly even get them to keep an eye out for items or put things to one side.

However, do not despair if there are no vintage clothes shops near to where you live. You can still find a quality retailer simply by logging on to a computer and surfing the net. An online seller can be just as good a find as a local retailer and with emails and via telephone, questions, and queries can still be answered.

Another good feature of an online vintage clothes shop is that all the available stock is clearly laid out in relevant sections giving you the chance to browse at your leisure. The website is available twenty-four hours a day giving you access, whenever it is convenient. Once you have then found you desired piece of vintage clothing, purchase it online and have it posted direct to your door.

A dedicated retro clothes shop will often stock all manner of vintage items from perhaps a retro shirt to sunglasses and accessories. Finding such a wide range all in one place can end hours of searching that may well otherwise end fruitlessly. Plus, the added bonus of stocking accessories perfectly rounds off any purchase and helps to complete your all important look.

So, why not seek out a quality retro clothing shop that has the expertise and know-how in which vintage pieces really make a difference to your wardrobe.
