How Web Forms Should Be Developed

What this is about: This list covers how web forms should be created as well as basic functionality, including how errors are handled when something goes awry.

Why this is important: Forms are a standard method of allowing visitors to communicate with you, including the placing orders. If forms don't work properly, frustrate your visitors or create additional roadblocks that the visitor must hurdle over, the contact/conversion rate on your site will drop drastically.

What to look for:

Vendors Still In Control of the Source Code

Red Hat announced today that it's buying Qumranet, the company behind the KVM open source project. This is interesting because Red Hat already supports Xen, a competing open source virtualization technology. Most of you know that XenSource, the company behind Xen, was acquired by Citrix. Rumors have floated about Microsoft buying Citrix for some time. Red Hat probably wanted more control over its destiny in the virtualization arena.

Validating Your HTML Goes A Long Way

With a pool of technologies, like frames, Flash, etc. giving search engine crawlers a tough time already in their quest to decipher and then subsequently rank web pages, you may think ?? why make their job tougher as it ultimately going to affect your rankings on SERPs. You, however, may be already doing so by unconsciously incorporating into your website an invalid HTML code. If you continue this malpractice, you may lose out on good search or even mediocre search engine rankings. The importance of a valid HTML is manifold.

Optimize Title Tags for Enhanced Traffic

Perhaps, the most important part of your website is the Title of your page. When a search engine crawler visits your website, the very first factor it notices, is the title tag. The importance of the title tag can be summarized just by the simple fact, that if your title isn't unique or not self created, then the search spider would simply ignore that page considering it as duplicate content. If your content is considered to be 'duplicate' then all your efforts in creating your page will become useless.

Facebook f8 Developer Conference

I attended the Facebook f8 developer conference on Wednesday in San Francisco and I'm still recovering from the overwhelming experience.

Thousands of developers flocked to the San Francisco Design Center to see their Social Sherpa in person and calibrate with his vision for the next year of propagating the social graph. It's indeed a movement and his influence can not be underestimated. Comparisons to Steve Jobs were broadcast as freely as the ideas for new apps that were exchanged in almost every conversation.

Wordpress is web software for online publishing. Notice that I didn't use the word blog, even though wordpress is blogging software. It has been expanded to be A LOT more then that and shouldn't considered in the same class as most blogging software. It's a robust CMS (content management system) that empowers every type of website with users that include CNN, Playstation and the New York Times.

Adobe's New AIR Development Web Server

DARE is a local http server that makes it easy to create, test, and package AIR applications. It allows you to develop and test using your HTML/JS tools of choice and just a web browser.

Amongst all the Adobe Media Player and Adobe TV articles that swamped my RSS Feed Reader today, there was a lone but very interesting article from Ted Patrick - DARE.

Wrapping A FOAF Document Into A Strongly Typed Class

I've been looking deeply into FOAF lately and last week I worked on a parser that could wrap a FOAF document into a strongly typed class for easy consumption by C#.

Now I want to share it with anyone interested. It appears there are no FOAF parsers available in C# yet. I wasn't able to find any.

The parser

The class FoafParser has two public methods, Parse and ParseFriendsAsync, which handles two different approaches in fetching FOAF documents.

The Parse method
