People who love wallpaper seem to hate Faux finishes and vice versa, but there is a way to have both!! Wallpaper can be nice and look good. It is also messy to remove. There is a trade off from wallpaper to a faux finish but it really comes down to personal taste.

What can we paper for you?

Is there still water damage? If so the area will still be wet. The insulation may still be wet if the area was fixed. The water could have been the reason for the damage to the drywall seams as well.

The other reason for damaged drywall seams is just the house settling or shifting due to the weather. Some of these cracks can be fixed by just replacing the tape, sometimes we need to get tin to attic ceiling and add screws to the joists as they may have come loose.

So how can we make you happy?

So with 3 different rollers and 3 different paints I set out to see if the claims of these companies were true and that their premier paints could cover in 2 coats with red.

I started with Sherwin. I am from Ohio, Cleveland so I do have some heart felt connection to the paint company I grew up with. I have used the paint before and as with the last time 2 coats of red was not going to work. If you use a tinted grey primer you will have a true red from them, but that paint does need the grey primer.

Next was Aura. I cut it in and rolled it once, and it was very apparent that it needed another coat of red. Very see through of the white base primer. the 2nd coat did work and covered great.

Then I used Behr Ultra. I cut in with one coat and rolled one coat. To a customer that would not be picky and is looking for a one coat good looking red, this was the one I would tell them to use. Plus at $20 dollars cheaper per gallon, there is a economical reason to use it as well. (Two coats were perfect by the way.)

I used the same roller and the same brush for each paint. Each paint does have their suggested type of roller to use, and even though I am a professional painter, I will not go through the extra steps to have the “right” roller for each companies paint. So I used a 3rd party brush and roller that I love, they always work, they clean up exceptionally well, and they are affordable. I cannot stand to have disposable brush or rollers sleeves when I can spend a few minutes to clean them.

David: Ok Jason, what is chaulking on a house?
Jason: Chaulking by definition is the Formation of fine powder on the surface of the paint film during weathering. It can cause color fading. Some degree of chalking is a normal, desirable way for a paint film to wear, but excessive film erosion can result in heavy chalking.

David: What will cause it?
Jason: there are several reasons and or causes
• the previous use of a low-grade, highly pigmented paint.
• Using an oil-based paint. (These tend to chalk more than latex formulations).
• Aluminum siding can develop an excessively thick chalk layer and will require power washing to ensure complete chalk removal.
• Use of an interior paint for an outdoor application.

David: So what is a good solution to get rid of it?
Jason: Remove chalk by washing siding with detergent and water or by having it professional power washed. If some chalk remains after first washing, then wash again for complete removal. Rinse well with clear water. Allow to dry thoroughly. For the best resistance to chalking, use a higher sheen such as satin or gloss. Brick areas that are stained by “chalk run-down” should be scrubbed with a stiff brush and detergent. Professional Cleaning may be required to remove this staining.

David: What would you use to paint over it once cleaned?
Jason: I would Recommend 2 Coats of a Premium grade Exterior Latex Paint such as our Duration paint line.

Linda : My first memory of the Arts is when I was about 4 years old. I was painting with wet concrete all over my Dad’s car…it seemed like a proper support to me . He wasn’t too happy since he had to stop pouring the new patio and wash the car. Needless to say, I’ve tended to avoid concrete since then! But every other medium has been fair game. I found my way to online art forums after years of practicing alone and I discovered Faux. What a world of beauty it is, too!
While doing that, I found and fell in love with Photo-Shop. After a few years of experience, I look forward to doing what I love for more people: Helping your client see what you see for their home by Photoshopping a picture of your sample board into a picture of their room.

David-How is this done?
Linda-Pictures are e-mailed to me — photoshopbylinda@gmail.com — with your instructions. Hi-res images work best and they can also be sent to me via cellphone e-mail (not as a text). The better the picture, the better the end result. I then provide a quote, time frame and payment instructions. Soon, the artist and/or designer will have images to show their clients!

David-Can you change the color?
Linda- Sometimes my clients love a finish but have a different color scheme going on.
I can change the color! For more accuracy, a swatch or another picture of the color to be used should be sent. I do advise that lighting and different monitors can affect the outcome.
