Last week I made a call to Joan Scheib of Joan Scheib Interiors. We get calls about different types of interior design styles and what Feng Shui is. I have no clue so I call ed Joan. She is passionate about taking the ordinary and Creating Extraordinary Living Through Inspired Design!

The cheapest Venetian plasters are from the local home improvement stores. They are usually a acrylic based product, harder to apply, harder to polish.What you save in money for materials you loose in time to do the work.

The expensive plasters are lime based. We have to use a special primer for them to make sure they bond to the surface and to make sure the lime will not eat away your walls. They apply like using warm butter and polish to a mirror like finish with little effort. They are amazing products. The better products are from one of our favorite stores Chicago Institute of Fine finishes in Carol Stream. Aside from a amazing array of products to use the knowledge of product usage is superior to anyone else. They are there to help make your world beautiful.

First is ,what is the table worth to you?  A quality solid wood table will be hard to replace compared to the cost of refinishing it.

What color or type of wood is it? Some tables are not real wood, have formica tops on them, or just have a color you do not like. Depending on the surface you could refinish it or paint/glaze it.

Finally the question everyone hates, what is your budget? Budget determines everything. Materials, type of finish, what your real investment for this project is.

Look at new tables, see what they cost and how what you can get. Then call us and we cam tell you what we can do to help you out.

Not that everyone is going to have all of that done but you get the Idea. When we are called to paint a room, we should be part of the process of your decorating but more of the final touch. You should not pick a color until you know what color your granite will be, what your new bedding will be or the style of window treatments you are getting,

Do  you have wood/cedar/lap type siding? If so what does it look like? You need to look at the joints to make sure they are not gaped, make sure there are not any knot holes, and finally really look at it see see if it looks dried out. How does it feel? If your siding is rough to the touch, you get white residue on your hand or you get pieces of the siding coming off ans you touch it, you should have us take a look. Do you like the color? Now that you have the time to think about it, what color would you really like?

Do you have aluminum or vinyl siding? If it is chalky or pasty looking it could benefit from a power washing. If it is peeling or has oxidized it is time for new paint, no need to replace it.
