The Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) is soliciting proposals for helicopter-borne geophysical surveys in up to three areas in south-central and interior Alaska, as part of the Governor’s initiative on assessment of strategic and critical minerals in Alaska. The “Wrangellia” survey includes part of the Talkeetna Mountains, Healy, and Mt. Hayes quadrangles, and is part of the Valdez Creek mining district. The “East Styx” survey is in the Talkeetna and Tyonek quadrangles and is largely in the Yentna mining district. The “Eastern” survey is in the Tanacross and Nabesna quadrangles, and is part of the Tok mining district. Aeromagnetic, electromagnetic, and some radiometric data will be acquired.

New Interactive Web Application Features Statewide Data Related to Quaternary Active Faults and Folds

The Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) has released an interactive web map application, Alaska’s Quaternary Faults and Folds (QFF) (Digital Data Series 3 [DDS3]). The application displays faults and folds throughout the state of Alaska that are believed capable of producing damaging earthquakes, and is part of DGGS’s Engineering Geology Section’s efforts to better characterize earthquake hazards. To use this new research and planning tool, go to Quaternary Active Faults and Folds

DDS3 includes a full range of zoom and scroll options to navigate and view the distribution of active earthquake sources across the state. Background base-map options include topographic maps, digital elevation models, and satellite images. Basic fault parameters are displayed in pop-up balloons accessed by clicking the mapped trace on-screen. Available parameters include name, age, slip rate, slip sense, dip direction, mapping accuracy, and mapped scale. The relative age of the last known activity on each structure is color coded to the explanation displayed in the right corner of the display.

Data related to the location and relative activity of earthquake sources displayed on DDS3 are from DGGS Miscellaneous Publication 141, Quaternary Faults and Folds in Alaska: A Digital Database, published in 2012. Older faults from DGGS Miscellaneous Publication 150, Digitized Faults of the Neotectonic Map of Alaska (Plafker and others, 1994), are also displayed.

As part of this release, DGGS has prepared a printable poster of the state showing the locations of faults, folds, and earthquakes. This downloadable pdf (1 sheet) accompanies MP 141 and includes summary information on earthquake hazards and historical earthquake ruptures. The combined datasets of DDS 3, MP 141, and MP 150 together represent a readily accessible, user-friendly resource valuable to a wide variety of users including policy planners, engineers, researchers, and educators.

Agencies, institutions, and companies are encouraged to submit additional data on active earthquake sources to be included, pending review, in future updates of the fault and fold database. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS), is seeking an Administrative Officer II to oversee all administrative functions for the division, including budget control and tracking, accounting, financial and personnel management, purchasing, travel, equipment inventory, policy and procedure development, and special administrative projects. This is a supervisory position over two other administrative staff who assist with these tasks. The ideal candidate will have broad working knowledge of the State of Alaska’s administrative policies and procedures in all these areas, as well as the State’s online administrative systems, such as ABS, ALDER, AKSAS, AKPAY, OPD, and Workplace Alaska.

Based in Fairbanks, DGGS is the state`s lead source and repository of Alaska geologic data and the primary source of information concerning Alaska`s geologic energy resources, mineral resources, and geologic hazards. DGGS is also one of three participating agencies in the federally funded Alaska Volcano Observatory, and administers the Alaska Seismic Hazards Safety Commission. The division has approximately 40 full-time permanent employees, 8 full-time nonpermanent employees, and 8 part-time student interns in 6 sections located in Fairbanks and at the Geologic Materials Center (GMC) in Eagle River. DGGS’s approximately $9 million annual budget authorization consists of about 50 percent General Fund receipts, 25 percent federal receipts, 13 percent interagency receipts, 7 percent CIP receipts, and 5 percent Statutory Designated Program Receipts. All funding sources except General Fund receipts can vary considerably from year to year, resulting in significant budgeting and financial management challenges.

This position oversees a wide variety of contracts for the division, including helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft services, laboratory analytical services, field camp logistics, technical software licenses, and professional services. Annually these contracts can total in the dozens and represent $5-6 million of the division’s expenses. The person in this position is responsible for reviewing and approving all procurements to assure that they comply with state policies and procedures and are coded to appropriate accounts in a manner that most efficiently utilizes the division’s financial resources.

This is a range 19 position at DGGS’s main office on College Road in Fairbanks. Id eally we would like to double-fill this position starting in mid-April so the selected candidate can train into the position with the incumbent, Vickie Butherus, who is retiring.

The successful applicant will use knowledge of basic geology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to make meaningful contributions to the Division’s Gas Pipeline Corridor Program by creating and editing various GIS-based maps and figures. The successful applicant will work directly under the supervision of the program manager in Fairbanks, Alaska. This is a long-term nonpermanent position that will last at least nine months.
