Bonsai exhibition on December 10 at BHOPAL

Come December 10, a two day Bonsai exhibition would be held in the city. Organised by the Bonsai Society of Madhya Pradesh, it is a biennial event put together by bonsai lovers across the city.

Started in 1991 by Sneh Keshav with 6-7 bonsai enthusiasts, currently the strength stands at 35-40.

Vice president of the Society Santosh Choudhry who has 100 Bonsais in his garden says that he spends more than one hour every day to look after his plants. "Though bonsai plant needs a special ceramic pot, it can be grown and developed in an ordinary clay pot also", he said.

He stressed on the 'cutting, pruning, shaping' of the bonsai. "A bonsai should look and be shaped like a tree in a shallow pot and not just some miniature plant." "It takes minimum five years to develop a bonsai".

Vivek Shukla secretary of the club says that contrary to popular belief, it is not expensive to nurture your own bonsai. "You can start with a Rs 30 clay pot instead of a fancy bonsai pot and the plant would come for Rs 30-50."

Stressing on different styles like formal upright, informal upright, semi-cascade-style etc, another office bearers stated. The society also organises meetings, workshops and classes for the bonsai aficionados. They invite different bonsai masters from the world over. While the Americans mostly use conifers and junipers, the Eastern masters work with ficus, banyan and peepal.

Shangri La displays bonsai trees: Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, 211 West Park Ave., will host a week-long display of bonsai trees during the Bonsai Festival.

Bonsai trees will be on display 10 a.m.-4 p.m. May 21-28 at the Tree Ring Plaza.

There will be a beginner skill level bonsai lecture at 10 a.m. May 21 followed by an intermediate skill level bonsai class at 2 p.m., both led by Yvonne Padilla from the Corpus Christi Bonsai Club. Reservations are required; call 409-670-9799.

At the Bonsai Festival, visitors will be able to view different bonsai trees on display throughout the week, including junipers, pines, Brazilian rain tree, cypress, maples and others.

Bonsai Society's spring show will be 30th annual

The Pittsburgh Bonsai Society will have its 30th annual spring show on May 21 and 22 at Phipps Garden Center in Shadyside.

This free event will feature many miniature works of art on display, along with vendors selling starter material, tools and supplies. An information area will be set up where visitors can learn about how to create bonsai and can bring in their own trees for care and styling advice.

There will be a styling demonstration of a tree at 1 p.m. Saturday and a workshop on styling a juniper at 1 p.m. Sunday; there is a small fee for each.

The consignment room will feature members with trees and young bonsai material for sale.

The show is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 21 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 22 at the garden center at 1059 Shady Ave.

Bonsai show scheduled in Chico April 30, May 1, The Community Center, 545 Vallombrosa Ave., will be the venue for a beautiful display of a living art form this month.

A Bonsai Show is planned 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 30 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 1.

The show is open to the public and is free (donations accepted). Many styles and varieties of trees will be displayed.

Beginning Bonsai: Two Sessions Saturday, April 16, 9 a.m. – noon and Saturday, April 23, 9 – 11 a.m. This two-session bonsai course introduces participants to the art of bonsai. The first session leads students through the history of bonsai, types of plants to use, containers, bonsai soil and tools needed along with how to prune and style their tree. During the second session, students plant their tree in a bonsai container. Materials for the course include one tree, bonsai container, planting material, wire and an Art of Bonsai booklet. With the objective of nurturing fondness of people towards greenery, a three-day Bonsai exhibition will get underway at Park No 1 in the state capital from March 25.
The exhibition, being organised under the auspices of Lake City Bonsai Association -- will be inaugurated by Madhya Pradesh Forest Minister Sartaj Singh.
''A training workshop will also be organised during this period for those interested in Bonsai art,'' Association's Chairperson Arundhati Tiwari told reporters here.

The training will be imparted by Hyderabad-based expert Madhusudan Reddy, Association's President JS Bindra and Ms Sneh Prasar. Bindra said Bonsai plants provided good feeling at home besides helping in cleaning environment.

He pointed out that some people believe that Bonsai art actually originated in India. Bonsai can be done on any plant by growing them in pots in a miniature form. Tulsi is one good example of this.

Ms Tiwari said the exhibition will showcase around 250 entries. A few of them will be from foreign countries such as China and Taiwan.

One of the most rewarding Home and Garden Show exhibits, the Baltimore Bonsai Club, is in the Horticulture Hall building at the Maryland State Fairgrounds this weekend only. The club is offering one of the best garden bargains you could ever find.

The art of containerizing wild trees comes from China. It is the specialized form of gardening known as bonsai, which means “tree in pot,” from the Chinese phrase pun sai.

From China, bonsai spread to Japan where it became an art form. Today bonsai gardening is practiced all over the world.

If you ever wanted to know more about it or try your hand at creating a bonsai, this weekend is a great time to start. The Baltimore Bonsai Club is offering the plant, the container, the soil, the wire and—most important—the instruction and lots of expert advice and all this for only $50. Believe me, this is a bargain.

And what a friendly bunch of people they are! Jim Sullivan, a retired engineer from Bowie, Md., was clipping away at a gorgeous Scots pine that he has been training for 35 years. It is a beauty. When asked how he learned bonsai he said that he had been involved with it for many years but really got serious when he joined the Bonsai Club of Bowie. That club no longer exists, but other clubs that are part of the Potomac Bonsai Association are centers for collective knowledge and a great place to learn.

Sullivan said that he has about 200 planted containers in his collection and that, “Some people would say I am disturbed to have so many bonsai to maintain while others would say it is a good start.”

Sullivan said he has learned which plants work best and what they need to thrive. All the members with whom I spoke agreed that they had become better gardeners when they joined this club and started to learn from more experienced members. But they also agree with Barry Figard, club President, that “the best teacher is your own experience.”

Bonsai 'addict' wins national competition

WHEN Diederik Haneveld was declared the winner of a national bonsai competition this month, it came as a pleasant surprise for the Shepherds Flat resident.

Mr Haneveld, a self-confessed bonsai "addict", became enthralled with bonsai 19 years ago but even now believes that he has "only scraped the top of the iceberg" of the artform.

The competition, conducted online by national bonsai society Ausbonsai, called for entrants to create a Literati style bonsai.

Mr Haneveld, who took out both first and second places with his two entries, said he had 12 months to change his tree into the unique, minimalist style.

"The idea was to create the idea of a very old tree ... an old tree, sitting on a hill and its branches were windblown," he said.

"I had to work on it on a weekly basis to create its character."

The win has come as a feather in the cap for Mr Haneveld, a martial arts instructor who runs a bonsai nursery at Shepherds flat, describing himself as "one of the rare people who gets paid to do what they love."

"The idea of having a nursery was so I could have a hobby to do, which has gone way out of hand by the way," he said.

"It changes you as a person. It's a wonderful hobby."

Mr Haneveld now has up to 4000 bonsais and "pre bonsais" at his nursery .

He says in many ways caring for a bonsai is like caring for a child.
