Silent Killers

"But you don't look sick!" is the typical response to people living with asthma, MS, arthritis, and so on. These, like celiac and diabetes, are considered "invisible illnesses" because — at least in most, or early, cases — they don't come with the external signs and visible symptoms that announce to the world, "My body is less than perfect. You may treat me as a leper."

This post is not about that.

Rather, this is about those conditions that are so invisible that they don't even have symptoms by which they can be diagnosed, unless your medical team performs frequent, specific screenings. Conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, many types of heart disease, certain types of liver disease, early-stage cancer... and for too many of us, type 2 diabetes.

An Absolutely Fantastic Resource About Pregnancy and Diabetes

I've said it before and I know others have too: it's awfully strange, considering my profession, that I don't read books. I've never been a book reader. Ever. I struggled through classes in high school and college that required reading novels.

I know, right? And yes I still want to write the Great American Novel. But that's different. Part of the reason I don't read more is that I'm easily distracted. I can sit down and read a chapter or two of a book, put it down and think that I'll be able to get back to it the next day. But then it's a week before I pick the book up again and I've forgotten what I've read.

Different Perspectives of My Reality

I went to the doctor about my leg again yesterday. A different one. One that I feel much more comfortable with in the whole scheme of things. She seemed confident, personable, and concerned. They asked about my blood sugars, about what had been going on, and all that jazz.

And she believes that the infection is probably from a spider bite that turned into MRSA. Yep, MRSA. The big, scary staph infection. So now I'm sincerely hoping the new course of antibiotics kicks in soon. Because I'm totally run down in body and soul with this whole thing. I'm so exhausted, but can't sleep. I'm in pain. I'm annoyed.

I feel a shift taking place in the world today. Its happening as we speak, and I feel it happening within me, on this site and others, before the world. Slowly, more and more people are realizing the power of their minds. The power to be at peace with life and whatever happens in it, the power of the ability to watch our thoughts and to not be affected by them completely. I watched another documentary recently called, “The New Medicine”. It touches on this very point. More and more, people who fall ill to various things are finding the healing benefits of their own thoughts and states of consciousness while enduring the sicknesses their experiencing.

I LOVE DIABETES

Wow, what a storm that was started recently on my co-bloggers page. I have the utmost respect for you Michelle and your passion, writing ability, your life and even your disgust with diabetes when you wrote that blog. Please know this. I HAVE WRITTEN these types in the past too (when I was off). But you, and all the people that commented on your blog who, too, agree’d with your sentiment of “hating diabetes”, could not have proved a point with any clearer of an example of how out of touch we get with ourselves and life from time to time. This is ok, this is normal. It happens. But what you do with it when your faced with it, is what makes the difference and what can take you from a life of peace, or heaven, and true existence - to a place of hell, or unbalance, or non-peace.

Is it just me...or has anyone else noticed the lack of true sportsmanship in today's sporting events and competitions? That’s kind of what I was thinking today after reflecting on last night’s superbowl. It seems like all I see anymore, when I catch a rare game on TV, are egotists trying to out do one another. Anymore, all I see are fights and bad things taking place on screen. Our kids are watching. We’re watching. And no one truly seems to take offense anymore to the programming that’s on. ( I guess my ego does :)

Post-Fast Summary - Pass Me That Apple Please

I wrote recently about my first fast. I loved the experience and I hope you decide to look into it for yourself to see if it’s something you’re interested in doing. But now that a few days have past, and I’m back to eating, “normal” again, I wanted to let everyone know how things are going.

Since the fast I have had a few highs, some mild depression (psychological, as well as physiological), but overall some WONDERFUL blood sugars!

(Singing) - Leeeeaving on a Jet Plane..I Don't Know When I'll Be Back Again

I can’t quite seem to narrow down exactly what I want to do, but I know it has something to do with traveling the globe, being around others, and spreading peace. The thing I realize, and that we/I sometimes forget, is there is something to be said about a person who just “jumps”. In other words, instead of losing myself in thoughts of what might happen or where I might end up, or how I will get my (diabetic) supplies…I’m more interested in just living and the experiences that come along with it. The idea of just spreading my wings and flying…no matter what happens.

My First Fast

I just finished a fast a few days ago. It was one of the single most awesome things that I have ever done. I’ve been reading a very interesting book lately – it talks in length about many things in life – but one thing that I really wanted to try was a fast.

After I started reading this book, and I began to learn a lot about fasting, I decided to do a bit more research for myself online and by asking friends. I got a lot of mixed reviews. Some people were very anti-fast and some people raved about it. So I dug a little deeper and decided this was something that was going to be a very PERSONAL EXPERIENCE and I figured I would try it out for myself (just like you should do if your ever curious about something).

Information Overload

The web has brought so much clarity to my diabetes time trial. This last week has solidified in my head how much knowledge it has given me. I had an e-mail conversation with a newly diagnosed type-1 and it re-surfaced all of thethoughts and questions I had when I was first diagnosed.

What exactly is a honeymoon phase and why isn’t there a beautiful woman involved?

Can I indulge my endless burrito desires, and how much tomatillo green-chili salsa is too much for one man?
