The statistic that “diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults ages 20–74 years” is startling. Those recently diagnosed with diabetes mellitus may be overwhelmed with the level of care they must provide for their body, but being dismissive can lead to devastating eye problems.

High blood sugar increases the risk of diabetes related eye problems. It causes the lens of a person’s eye to swell, which can result in temporary blurred vision. Getting your blood sugar under control can restore your normal vision, but this can take months. It is imperative that before and after each meal you check your levels to keep the blood sugar in the correct range.

Blurred vision may, however, be a symptom of a more severe eye problem; one that might not go away with time. Cataracts and glaucoma are eye diseases that can result from diabetes mellitus if you do not go to regular ophthalmology visits.

Developing cataracts, a clouding of the lens, will make it very difficult to focus as it creates a blurred vision field. Although, cataracts are typically associated with older folks, diabetes doesn’t discriminate and anyone who doesn’t keep their blood sugar under control can develop cataracts. The treatment is typically surgery with a lens implant.

Glaucoma occurs when the fluid inside the eye isn’t able to drain properly. This causes pressure on the nerves, which can result in a change of vision. Unfortunately, there are no symptoms of glaucoma until the disease is advanced and there is an apparent loss of vision. Those who are diagnosed with diabetes will be under careful watch and continually monitored with glaucoma screenings during their eye doctor visits.

There are so many reasons to keep up with your diabetes management. There is no reason that anyone should suffer from eye disease because of their diabetes. Being attentive to your care, making and keeping eye doctor appointments will help you keep your eyes safe.

Childhood diabetes may, in fact, be the most pressing public health concern facing the country today. Rates of childhood diabetes – inextricably linked to childhood obesity – continue to rise, particularly amongst minority and urban populations.

And it’s not rocket science why this is so. For starters, parents are faced with the seemingly insurmountable power of junk food and the companies who market it. It happens all the time: a child is in the cereal aisle, begging his mother or father to purchase that tremendously sugary cereal. And more often than not, the parent acquiesces.

Of course, the marketing of sugar is everywhere; in television commercials, movies, and even in schools, where soft drinks can be purchased from vending machines. Compounding this challenge is the fact that many children, particularly those in urban areas, don’t need the needed exercise to help keep the weight off.

So what can be done? Well, first, parents must take a more active role in regulating their children’s diets, including more fruits and vegetables and less junk food. Schools must serve healthier meals and make an effort to promote exercise, which is why we applaud Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign. And most of all, adults should lead by example. As tempting as that bag of cookies looks, put it down. Try an apple instead.

While more and more people being diagnosed with diabetes, there is nonetheless a ray of hope amongst this bad news, and it’s the fact that diabetes management techniques are improving by leaps and bounds.

This is important, because as any diabetic will tell you, living with diabetes requires constant vigilance around proper diet and record keeping.

Which is why we’re so excited about the new Track3 app for the iPhone. This application goes above and beyond your typical glucose tracking tools; rather than simply tracking blood sugar, it takes a holistic approach and also tracks insulin levels, medication dosages, and the individual’s weight.

By crunching this data and referring to a formula devised in tandem with the patient’s doctor, the app then recommends insulin dosages based on particular meals. The app also keeps track of the nutritional value and sugar levels of each meal. If the patient has a goal of a certain amount of calories to consume per day, the app tracks it; once the goal is met, the patient can respond accordingly.

By using this app in combination with modern diabetes supplies, more and more diabetics can lead healthy and non-disruptive lives.

By now, hopefully most Americans know that diabetes can develop in otherwise-healthy individuals over time, brought on by high sugar intake and weight gain. In some instances, the diagnosis can come out of nowhere; however, in most cases, it’s a gradual process.

People who consume high quantities of sugar, fatty foods, and rarely exercise need to be aware of the risk and improve their lifestyle before the symptoms of diabetes start to appear.

The same, unfortunately, cannot be said for gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes, quite literally comes out of nowhere; women who previously exhibited no symptoms of diabetes start to exhibit high glucose levels during pregnancy. And unlike Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, there are few symptoms for gestational diabetes.

This ailment afflicts roughly 3-10 percent of pregnancies, leading some medical experts to conclude it’s a natural occurrence. But that’s of little consolation to mothers who have it: babies born to mothers with the disease tend to be abnormally large, have low blood sugars, and jaundice. Fortunately, gestational diabetes can be treated by effectively managing one’s blood sugar levels.

Therefore, if you are pregnant, it is critical to talk to your doctor about this and to closely watch your diet.

When we talk about the toll diabetes takes on an individual, much of the discussion is understandably centered on the body: keeping track of one’s blood sugar, taking your insulin, eating a healthy diet, etc. But diabetes also takes a severe toll on an individual’s mental state, and it’s a problem that often does not get enough attention, particularly since the disease has more pronounced psychological effects on women than men.

A recent study conducted by WebMD and Rite Aid discovered that half the women diagnosed with type 2 diabetes felt
“overwhelmed” by the prognosis and the what is required to keep their blood sugars in check. This may seem like an intuitively obvious finding – living with diabetes, after all, can be very disruptive and emotionally taxing – but not when you consider that only a third of men felt the same way.

So why are women more emotional overwhelmed with their diagnoses compared to men? For starters, some theorize it has to do with how women nowadays have to handle many roles – worker, homemaker, and caretaker. Yet at the same time, the study found that only a third of surveyed women exercise, and 55 percent still eat salty and sweet foods, contributing to the idea that healthy lifestyle choices could help reduce the feeling of helplessness many feel.

Ultimately, regardless of one’s gender, any diabetic must be aware of their mental state and keep an open dialogue with their doctors about any feelings of anxiety, frustration, and depression.

For people who develop diabetes mellitus it may not be enough to simply watch what they eat and count the calories and it may not be enough to exercise each day; although these are very important, many people also need to be on oral diabetes medication. These three remedies can present the best force against fighting diabetes!

If you have recently developed diabetes the oral diabetes medication should work to keep blood glucose levels at or near the normal range. For some who have suffered from diabetes mellitus for longer than 10 years, it may not be as effective. It is important that when you are initially diagnosed that oral medication is discussed as an option and a tool to help combat the disease.

Oral medication will not necessarily take the place of insulin especially during times of stress on the body, if you have an infection or are planning on having surgery, the body’s reaction may be to increase blood glucose levels, oral medication may not be enough and insulin may be needed.

Controlling your diabetes with diet and exercise is the best way to get your blood glucose under control. The help of insulin and/or oral diabetes medication may, however, be necessary. Each case is different and every person has a different ability to lower their blood glucose levels. Discuss each option with your doctor and while you may need both treatments at the initial diagnosis, with a strong commitment you can slowly wean yourself off the pills and insulin and maintain a healthy lifestyle with your diet and exercise.

With Christmas approaching, it’s important for diabetics to watch what they eat. Of course, a proper diet for diabetics should be employed year-round, but the risk of adversely affecting one’s blood sugar is definitely greater around the holidays.

Naturally, the biggest risk diabetics face is to overload their plate with food. This is particularly bad if the food is high in carbohydrates, as this will cause a rise on one’s blood sugar. Specifically, diabetics should eat non-starchy vegetables that can help them keep their blood sugars under control. These types of vegetables include asparagus, broccoli, onions, peppers, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower – pretty much most vegetables you can think of. The American Diabetes Association provides a helpful list of non-starchy vegetables; the main thing to realize here is that these vegetables must not have added sodium, fat, or sugar.

Ultimately, diabetics should work with dieticians on developing a diet for diabetics that also includes effective ways to monitor one’s blood sugar, accurately track carbohydrate intake, and strategies for getting ample exercise.

Fortunately the same diabetes symptoms that occur in older children and adults are the ones that are present in children too young to speak or describe why they aren’t feeling well. This is why as parents we need to be vigilant about any symptom that may trigger a red flag.

If your child has an inordinate amount of wet diapers or a diaper rash that just doesn’t seem to go away with standard treatment and keeps recurring, if your child is more hungry or thirsty than usual or seems more fussy and unable to settle themselves and if they sleep more than they usually do, these could be diabetes symptoms.

By themselves they seem innocuous; however, those parents who take their child to the doctor just be on the safe side will be very thankful that they did. Your pediatrician will have your child see a pediatric endocrinologist.

There are many diabetes supplies to help manage your child’s diabetes. The most important will be the glucose monitor to help you identify when your child’s blood sugars become too high or too low. There are different types of monitors and meters so you will have to find one that works best for your child.

Your job is going to be to find that balance each day, before and after every meal. Enlist the help of a nutritionist to find meals and snacks with a low glycemic index. Together with your pediatrician and your endocrinologist, you will be formulating a team of support to help with your child’s treatments and finding new ways to incorporate these changes into your family’s new way of life.

Type 2 Diabetes is brought on by many bad habits. These habits cause people to gain weight, exercise less and generally fall into a destructive pattern. So, how easy is it to just stop, reflect on these poor lifestyle choices and change?

For a lot of people, it’s harder than you think. There are many folks who are able to make changes in their lives with relative ease. Others try and fail many times before they can successfully say they’ve beaten their habit.

There are many successful ways to break bad habits and make positive long lasting changes for a healthier, happier life. Breaking these bad habits are sometimes the only thing it takes to delay or even prevent type 2 diabetes!

Studies have shown that it takes about a month to rewire your brain and change a habit. So, begin by making a list of what you would like to change. Next to each bad habit, write down what you feel this habit gives to you. The goal is to replace the bad habit with something healthy.

Make sure the changes are small otherwise you will become discouraged. As these small changes get easier over time, you can add more changes toward a healthier lifestyle.

Write your goals for change down or tell a friend. This helps you keep the commitment. Reading about your new habits each day or talking to your friends about them, will keep you inspired.

One of the best things you can do to break a bad habit is start hanging out with people who are have already changed. If you want to cook healthier meals, join a group or take a class, surround yourself with people who have the same interests. If you want to exercise more, join a gym and talk to folks who will inspire you. Maybe you have a neighbor who walks each day, ask them if you can join them. This also creates a support system.

Don’t add too many changes at once. If it is diet and exercise you want to change, that is great, but don’t add more on top of that. Once you are successful with these, you can make any other changes in your life, such as financial changes, de-cluttering your home, taking more trips or visiting family. Once you being to see that these changes are attainable, and you get rid of even more bad habits, you will be working towards a fulfilling and happy life.

Managing diabetes is hard enough without having to run around for supplies. Diabetes medication is easy to order online once you have your prescription in hand. You don’t need to waste any gas driving to and from the drugstore anymore! Making sure that you have your diabetes supplies ready is part of managing your disease. Online shopping is extremely easy once you find the right products at the best price.

For one thing, buying supplies online is something you can do at any time of day or night. If you suddenly realize that you are running out of something, just log onto your computer and place a rush order. Online shopping for diabetes supplies allows you to compare prices as well. You can take your time without feeling rushed at a pharmacy counter. Also, shopping online gives you privacy.

Another major advantage of buying your supplies online is the ability to browse a huge selection of items and brand names. At your local pharmacy, you are limited to the inventory stocked by the store. Before you run out of your supplies, check out the wide range of items available right from your home computer.
