"The English friar and philosopher William of Ockham (1287-1347) is credited with developing the fundamental problem solving principle known as lex parsimoniae or Occam’s Razor. This principle holds that the hypothesis with the fewest assumptions is most often right. The simplest explanation is usually the most correct.

Albert Einstein is quoted as saying, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” With that in mind, let’s remember that type 2 diabetes reflects two fundamental problems:

Insulin resistance
Beta cell dysfunction
Insulin resistance, an overflow phenomenon, is caused by fatty infiltration of the liver and muscle. Without dietary intervention, defect #2 virtually always follows #1, albeit by many years. Also, #2 is almost never found without #1.

Yet somehow, we are asked to believe that the mechanism behind insulin resistance and beta cell dysfunction are completely and utterly unrelated? Occam’s razor suggests that both defects must be caused by the same underlying mechanism."

"What low-carb vegetables are good? There’s a very simple rule:
Vegetables growing above ground are low carb and can be eaten freely.
Vegetables growing below ground contain more carbs, so you’ll have to be more careful with them (especially potatoes).
Like any rule it is not perfect, so have a look below."

"Trying to hit a certain A1C target? Might be time to set your alarm for several hours earlier than usual. Don’t worry, I’m not suggesting waking up at 2 a.m. every night…but perhaps committing to waking up at 2 a.m. for one week merely to take a deeper look at what your blood sugar is doing while you sleep.

(If you have a continuous glucose monitor: awesome! But if you’re ignoring it overnight…then maybe you could commit to a week of using it intensely overnight!)"

Thoughts on the Pritikin Diet:

"Denise Minger wrote a very thought provoking post on the very low fat Pritikin Diet and how it can help reduce disease including diabetes and cancer. In the first part, I wrote my thoughts on the Kempner Rice diet here. The Pritikin diet is primarily composed of high fibre, high carbohydrate, low-fat, plant based foods. With his close relationship to McGovern, this diet formed the basis of many of the low-fat, carbohydrate based recommendations of the 1977 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Over some decades, his colleague RJ Barnard published many studies on this diet and how it could reduce many different diseases – mostly those associated with the metabolic syndrome. For example, this diet could help reduce prostate cancer, reduce insulin and medication usage for type 2 diabetes, reduce LDL oxidation, reduce breast cancer, reduce colon cancer, reduce heart disease, and improve cardiac risk factors."

LCHF for Beginners (Low Carb, High Fat) - Diet Doctor:

"1. Introduction
An LCHF diet means you eat fewer carbohydrates and a higher proportion of fat. Most importantly you minimize your intake of sugar and starches. You can eat other delicious foods until you are satisfied – and still lose weight.

A number of recent high-quality scientific studies shows that LCHF makes it easier both to lose weight and to control your blood sugar. And that’s just the beginning.

The basics

Eat: Meat, fish, eggs, vegetables growing above ground and natural fats (like butter).
Avoid: Sugar and starchy foods (like bread, pasta, rice, beans and potatoes).
Eat when you’re hungry until you are satisfied. It’s that simple."

How to Reverse Your Diabetes Type 2 - Diet Doctor:

"Where Sugar in the Blood Comes From
The problem for diabetics is that the body has difficulty keeping blood sugar levels down. The blood turns too sweet. So where does sugar in the blood come from?

Sugar in the blood comes from the food that we eat. The foods that turn into different types of sugar as soon as they reach the stomach are called carbohydrates. This means sugar (as in soda, fruit juice, candy) and starch (as in bread, pasta, rice and potatoes).

Carbohydrates
The starch, in for example bread, is broken down to glucose in the stomach. When glucose enters the blood stream it’s called blood sugar.

The more carbohydrates we eat in a meal, the more sugar is absorbed into the blood stream. The more sugar that’s absorbed into the blood stream, the higher the blood sugar will be."

Surgery reverses Diabetes:

"Could Type 2 Diabetes really be a disease that reverses? We’ve outlined in our previous post how most specialists, doctors and researchers view T2D as a progressive chronic disease. That means that once you have it, it will eventually progress no matter what you do. However, in truth, T2D is actually a reversible, curable dietary disease. And I can quite easily prove it to you.

Let me show you several examples. One of the most well studied examples comes from the literature surrounding bariatric surgery. This is commonly called stomach stapling surgery, and there are many kinds."

"This week I’d like to discuss type 2 diabetes (T2D) and inflammation. Usually I try to follow topics sequentially, but I was reviewing an article about type 2 diabetes and inflammation and thought it was quite interesting. The results of a large trial (TECOS) were released in June 2015 and illustrates once again the futility of targeting blood sugars in the treatment of T2D. This got me thinking about T2D again. So apologies, but we’ll start this series in the middle of the story.
As a background, you can view some of my online lectures, including “The Two Big Lies of Type 2 Diabetes“, “How to Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally“, and “The Perfect Treatment for T2D“. "

"We are just beginning to understand the biological intricacies of aging. A growing body of research is challenging the belief that aging is beyond your control, prompting scientists to begin thinking about ways we can slow our aging clocks to a slow crawl.

Although this is a relatively new branch of science, there are some factors that appear to be key in controlling how quickly you age. One major factor seems to be insulin signaling and the metabolic “engines” you have running day to day, which are largely controlled by the foods you eat.

In the first featured video, Dr. Peter Attia discusses how a ketogenic diet can optimize your metabolism. But before I discuss the specifics of this, I want to tell you about a remarkable mouse study, presented in the second video. Scientists just accomplished quite a feat: extending the lifespan of mice by 20 percent just by manipulating just one single gene"

"At the doctor's office and in any magazine, people with diabetes are often encouraged to check their blood sugars before meals. But in reality, this is only one of the very important times of day to check your blood sugar in order to assess how your body is handling the food you eat and your medication doses.

If you're working hard on improving your A1C results and overall blood sugar control, here are three times of day you'll definitely want to make a priority for testing:"

"People with diabetes know that a certain amount of ups and downs in blood sugar is normal. Your blood sugar can rise or drop if you're sick, stressed, exercise, or eat at a different time than usual.

If you notice your blood sugar is higher than your target number often, it's time to see your doctor. This may be a sign that your diabetes care plan is not working.

Some people still have spikes in blood sugar in the early morning hours for reasons that aren't so clear. This is more common in people with type 1 diabetes, but it can also affect people with type 2 diabetes. Here are common causes and solutions for morning high blood sugar:"
