Newsletter... And some other new things!

I just put out the first monthly newsletter! I am super excited and totally wanted to share this with you guys! I also just made a cocoon to match the Rebekah hat that came out last week! I am on a roll here! Woot Woot!

The first picture shows my "granddaughter" Katherine wearing the preemie Rebekah hat (hat pattern can be found HERE)and the new cocoon... I did not really like how much was left on top of the ribbon and kinda thought it covered too much of baby's face (I folded it under to be able to get the bottom half of her face in the shot) so I changed it up a little bit and now the ribbon is closer to the top. Pretty sure that I like it better this way. What do you think?

I was thinking that I may write up a pattern for one of these to match each of the newborn hat patterns that I have coming out. Still toying with that idea!

There was a pretty decent amount of interest in the newsletter, hopefully it is everything that was expected. I created a section for "sponsors" and put a little blurb in there asking for businesses (from large to small, its all good) who would like to be featured in that section - It's FREE!! Ben Preemie Pattern - Kate's Quilts & Crochet

There has been a lot of buzz about preemie patterns and donation pushes in the crochet world on facebook lately. I am not sure if you noticed it or not... I know that I jumped on that bandwagon for sure! ;)

Anyhow it is basically doing something that we love and doing it to give others a warm feeling inside. When you are dealing with a preemie you can kinda be cut off from everything else that is happening in life... Its almost like everything else fades away and all you can see, feel, or think is that baby (or babies!) It is kinda nice to know that there are people out there thinking about you, praying for you... Kinda makes you feel not so totally alone!

Anyhow... Enough of the feelings for now! In working on the donation items I noticed that so many of the patterns available were made for specialy yarns - They all seemed to be for yarns that you would not find at your local Walmart and maybe would not necessarily find local to you at all... This started the wheels in motion!

I have now come up with like five or six new patterns for preemies (they are being tested and released on the blog so be sure to check the "Patterns" tab once in a while) and plan to put together a free pattern pack of a couple of preemie sized patterns. In doing this I realized that I had hardly any boyish designs! (Those lucky little girls are sooooo much easier to design for!)

I have to share this pattern that my friend Kate (Kate's Quilts & Crochet (fb) Crafty Kate Going Crazy (blog)) came up with! It is super cute for a boy AND works out so well for a girl! It would be awesome for boy/girl twins for sure!!

The best thing about this pattern is that it works up quickly using under an ounce of worsted weight yarn! It can be worked up with just about any average yarn from Simply Soft (Kate used) to Bernat Super Saver (I used) without an issue!

Inspiration In Abundance!

I have been so inspired lately that it really has been difficult to pull myself away from all of this creativity and venture out into the "real" world of work and responsibilities... I know you guys know how I am feeling about this! lol

Anyhow in working on this amazing venture I have come up with about six new patterns! I am so excited! Definitely going to need some testers and photographers (items are ready to ship and I would need shots back ASAP!)

SO far I have them written up (super rough draft so far... lol) in three sizes ranging from preemie to 6 month. They are all super easy and quick to work up - You know that is how I like them! lol

Anyhow this is what I have gotten so far... Let me know what you think. 60 Hats for December 2012!

We (11 year old daughter & I) have our final count of completed hats to donate to our local NICU for December 2012! We hit 60 hats and are super excited!! Here is a pic of *most* of them... I was apparently in quite the crochet mood this month! Hopefully I can keep going with at least our monthly goal of 20 per month for 2013!

The cards should be in January 4th... Super excited to get them tagged and delivered!! I have to tell you, making money is great BUT honestly making these donation items is so much more rewarding than filling orders is - It actually has brought the joy back to crochet... It had honestly become a real chore to sit down and crochet! :/ So glad that my heart is back in it - too bad I had to get a "real" job and can't crochet my day away! :'(

I even had the time to go through some of my yarn this weekend and get rid of some of the yarn that was given to me and I have never used... Love hand me downs but there were just some that needed to go to a place that it will get the love and use that it deserves! ;)

I will be posting some pix once I get the tags in and have 6 new patterns that are patiently waiting for my laptop to be fixed! Fingers ALL crossed that happens SOON!!

Crocheting for a Cause...

I know that it has been quite a while since I have posted. Please know that I am not completely neglecting you and you are at the top of my goal list for the upcoming year!

So just to give you a little idea of what we have been working on...

First and foremost... I was browsing crochet creations on Facebook and came across a post that a friend had shared from a page called Sunset Crochet... She was asking fellow crocheters to accept a challenge to make 12 hats in 12 days to donate to a local hospital, etc. I started crocheting my little heart out... My daughter really wanted to help, however, she is not much into crocheting... She is now my weaving little sidekick!

We have pumped out over 50 hats in the past three weeks!! We are so excited that we ordered special cards to act as tags for the hats! They are arriving on January 4th and the hats will be personally delivered to our local NICU on the 6th! We are getting VERY antsy with anticipation!

On that same note after sitting together working away my 11 year old daughter looked at me and said "Mom? I really feel like we are doing something important here... Something that really matters... It feels really good, ya know?" we decided that this was something that we wanted to keep doing not just during the holidays BUT throughout the entire year. We set an initial goal of 15 hats per month, it has now been upped to 20 hats per month - every month of the year! That would make 220 hats donated to our local hospitals.

I have had the chance to play with creating new patterns for preemie and newborn and am working on getting a group of patterns together to post on the blog *SOON* hopefully!

Oh and in case you did not notice I had the opportunity to get in on an amazing sale on logos from ASW Studios and I really hope you love the new logo just as much as I do!

Basket Weave Newborn to 3 Month Beanie

A Blankie For A Princess ;)

A friend of mine asked if I would by chance be able to make an afghan for a close friend of hers... She knows how much I am NOT a fan of commitment... But she asked anyhow ;) So I told her that I would do it, no worries... I hit the net... Looking for something that was quick and easy but NOT completely monotonous and I would not get super bored half way through or be over it before I started it...

First let me start off by telling you that I have a folder on my desktop that has 863 patterns in it, and that is NOT counting the whole bunch that are still in my downloads folder, the huge binder next to my bed, or the gazillions that are lost in the dreaded "bookmarks" section of the web :/

After searching the web for what seemed like a long drawn out amount of time I found nothing... I do not want to do a thousand squares that I am not going to want to put together... I do NOT want to do something frustrating... Summer is not usually my crochet time... I must have passed this one pattern a trillion times in my search...

Finally I get a phone call... "Have you started on that blanket yet?" Ugh. "No..." Friend replies "Oh well that is ok... But I now need TWO! You wouldn't mind whipping up another would you?" Hmmmmm...

So back to these patterns I go! :/ Can you tell I am not overly impressed with making afghans? They just get boring! I would much rather "whip" up a pair of booties and a matching hat! lol

Anyhow so I go through my folder ONE more time just for the hell of it... And there it is... Hmmmmm... I wonder how hard that is, REALLY...

So it literally took me 6 hours to create this piece! And here I was wondering why I decided to charge $50 a piece for them! lol

Square #2

So... I got into doing this CAL... And I kept going and going and... Well you get the picture! lol

I found that these squares worked up SO fast! The assignment for the week (new assignment comes out June 1st) was squares one and eight... I did one, two, three, four, and eight... :/ However I have learned that my colors are coming together nicely!

I wanted something springish and fun... I went with Red Heart because I did not want to shell out a bunch of cash on something that I am doing for fun, really!

I posted some pix in the last post, they were the actual assignment! lol And here are some more to go with it! I do still have to introduce the last color! I also still have NO idea what I am going to do with this throw once it is all done! lol

I was thinking about giving it to my daughter - she LOVES the bright colors and with the pink and purple its a little too girlie for my sons taste, however, if I do that then I will kinda feel obligated to do ANOTHER one for him... Did I mention that I have commitment issues?? lol

Crochet Along... Oh boy!

CAL Project

So if you have been reading along you probably saw a thing or two about my fear of commitment... If not well it is pretty much a fact that I CANNOT deny! lol However, the lovely Scotti over at The Inner Hooker is hosting her second Crochet Along (CAL) and I thought that since I actually placed a vote for the pattern to be picked I should probably actually participate!

I started tonight with this weeks assignment... I have completed the two squares that we were assigned already... Who knew? They worked up so FAST and so EASY! I am amazed and wanting to move forward! lol

As promised... Though a little late, here is the second installment in the "Basic Beanie's Collection" lol. I actually have a set of these that I keep made up... Basically when I am writing a pattern in stead of constantly measuring (I do have a bit of OCD) I just check it with the basic beanie that is already made up! It has saved me a TON of time! They can be worked in rounds as well, however the thought of rounds tends to intimidate a beginner so this one is technically in rows.

Life... Or Something Kinda Like It...

It seems like it has been FOREVER since I have posted... And I suppose other than the giveaways it really has been! I am so sorry for that but things have been pretty insane around my area! It seems like the weather has been going crazy and so have my kids!! Agh!!!!!

Anyhow... I have been pretty blah myself... Kinda odd because it has been amazingly warm out lately. I live in Maine and I am pretty sure that we are supposed to be waaaaaayyyyy lower than 79 degrees in the middle of March! My allergies are going wacky :( Kinda makes me TIRED!!

On the bright side of things I have gotten a few more shots back and got an order to make some of the amazing capes that I saw on Etsy! The patterns are from a shop called Calleigh's Clips & Crochet Creations!

I cannot wait to get some shots back on those because they are seriously going up for sale ASAP! <3

Well I have to go and finish the superman and batman cape sets so they can be ready to go out tomorrowish! haha

Hopefully I will get a little time to FINALLY do up some patterns AND work on my exclusive photographer set! I am so excited... Now I just need some ambition! lol

Oh the Photography Props!

So I have now received shots from two photographers displaying a few of our items! I have to tell you it is really exciting! Like waaaay more exciting than I thought it would be! I honestly NEVER imagined that I would be so tickled pink over seeing my creations, my work in use! It is kinda invigorating! I really wish that I had the talent that these amazing people have because honestly the garage would be transformed into a complete photography studio! ;) Oh yeah! But, alas, I do NOT have that talent! I can totally handle the kiddos like my girls who pose without any push... Sheesh if all kiddos were like that I could totally be an amazing point and shoot photographer! haha...

Anyhow I told you that I was going to share... I know its kinda creepy BUT I have totally started myself a little photo album of these shots! Not only are they amazing shots, BUT I am so proud that my little hobby, my baby, has even come this far! Its hard to explain, but I am pretty sure that I will also have this feeling when my first child graduates or something like that! lol

The pouch is my pattern and is available on the blog, the headband was from a pattern that I purchased (you can get one here) and am able to make for sale... ;) hint hint ;)

Anyhow I am working on something that one the of the photographers mentioned to me and REALLY need to stop blah blah blahing about it and just DO it already! <3

I will definitely be posting some new pix and patterns soon! I have honestly just been going nuts with the crazy weather changes we have had in New England and I feel like my allergies are on a roller coaster! I think that if this winter is any indication then we are in for a H-O-T summer ahead!

Photography Props are HOTT HOTT HOTTTTT!

I know that I tend to ramble but honestly I feel as though things are on the verge of going somewhere with me... I have been working on a LOT of new ideas, I have scrapped a few too :( lol... BUT one of the things that I am MOST excited about is pairing up with some wonderful photographers around the country! Our little crochet creations are now in North Carolina, Missouri, Louisiana, Maine, and Alaska!

I am so excited to be getting some glamorous shots back from these super talented people! I have a few more that I am working with to nail down exactly what they need/want and what works for both of us!

Basic Beanies = A World Of Opportunity!

Super EXCITED this week! We are focusing on different beanies that can be created using the simple beanie increase base... Basically you would start these hats out EXACTLY the same way as any other hat and then you wind up with a LOVELY textured side! The ones that we have done up so far today all start out with a half double crochet beanie base!

I got so excited that I lost my camera in my confusion of yarn! lol... I will DEFINITELY be posting some more pictures this evening! I am so in love with this idea! AND we are working on some different "flower" ideas, although some are more adornments than flowers!

Newborn Bulky Pouch Crochet Pattern

Abbreviations Used:

CH – Chain

DC – Double Crochet

SL ST – Slip Stitch

YO – Yarn Over

ST – Stitch

Bulky Weight Yarn (Homespun is sample)

Q Hook

Yarn Needle

Size: Newborn Pouch

Gauge: Not necessary

Notes:

Pouch is began in rounds and changes to rows.

Special Stitch Instruction:

Beginning of Row - Dc2tg – Chain 1, dc in next sp.

Dc2tg – Begin dc do not pull through the last two loops of stitch, double crochet in next stitch, when you complete the second double crochet you will pull through the two loops of each stitch together, pulling through four loops.

Directions:

Chain 4, sl st into 1^st ch, ch 2.

Rnd 1 – 11 dc in ch 4 circle, sl st to ch 2 sp, ch 2 (12 st)

Rnd 2 - *2 dc in 1^st sp, dc in next,* repeat around, sl st into ch 2 sp, ch 2. (17 St)

Rnd 3 – *2 dc in 1^st sp, dc in next 2 sp* repeat around to last sp, dc in last sp, sl st into ch 2 sp, ch 2. (22 st)

Rnd 4 – Dc in next 4 sp, *2 dc in next sp, dc in next 3 sp* repeat around, sl st into ch 2 sp, ch 2. (26 st)

Rnds 5-9 – Dc in each sp around, sl st to ch 2 sp, ch 2. (26 sp) *You may need to skip last sp to keep the stitches at 26*

{You will now switch to rows to create the back and hanging sash}

Row 10 – Dc2tg, dc in next 15 sp, dc2tg, ch 1, turn. (17 st)

Row 11 – Dc2tg, dc in next 13 sp, dc2tg, ch 1, turn. (15 st)

Row 12 – Dc2tg, dc in next 11 sp, dc2tg, ch 1, turn. (13 st)

Hey Everyone!

I know that I have been a lousy blogger for the past week or so... My kiddos are on vacation this week! :( Ugh... I am on day #7 of a 9 day weekend... Yaaay me!

Oh yeah and the other half went to a dart shoot out for the weekend so now they are all going NUTS!!! I am serious need of a BIG truck of calgon! lol...

Big plans for Monday! Other than sending them all to school no matter what, I am working up some more tutorial videos and posting the Boob Baby Beanie pattern AND the Baby Bonnet pattern! So much to do, too many kids home! lol...

Fuzzy Bear Baby Beanie Pattern 0-3 Months

Yarn Needle

Size: 0-3 Month

Gauge: N/A (not gathered just yet)

Directions:

Ch 4, sl st into 1^st ch.

{The hat is worked in rounds. It may be a good idea to leave a long enough tail to use as a marker throughout the pattern.}

Rnd 1 – Hdc 9 times in ch 4 circle. (9 hdc) {Place a marker to show where the round will end}

Rnd 2 – 2 hdc in each st around to marker, place marker (18 hdc)

Rnd 3 – Hdc in each st around, place marker. (18 hdc)

Rnd 4 – Repeat row 2 (36 hdc)

Rnd 5-11 – Hdc in each st around, place marker. (36 hdc)

Attaching Ears:

Lie the hat flat and position ears so that the top of the ear is at about the bottom of round 2 and the bottom of the ear is at about the bottom of round 5. Attach the ears by tying the two strands (one from the beginning of the ch for the ears and the other is the ending tail) together, sewing the remaining end of the ear down and weaving the ends in on the INSIDE of the hat.
