Architects, acoustical planners, sound artists, and others concerned about how sound travels through a room are familiar with the applications of perforated acoustical ceiling panels. These panels can be both aesthetically pleasing and functional. As they can help absorb sound. As an added benefit perforated metal used for ceiling applications is often very easy to maintain, contemporary in design, and additionally functional in that it can hide wires and piping from view. The perforations make the material lighter by default when compared with non-perforated materials.

If you are looking for a solution to ambient noise and/or unsightly wires or piping in your space consider contacting Diamond Manufacturing to discuss perforated metal options for your ceiling.

Diamond Manufacturing offers a wide variety of choices of decorative perforated metal for the discerning designer or artist. Those looking for a material to be used for display purposes that may also need to meet criteria (such as a load bearing limit), appreciate the variety and versatility of perforated metal. For example, unique light fixtures could be created with a customized pattern that would allow light to stream through the perforated spaces. Or a perforated patterned metal could be used to separate a room without hiding the parts from view. There are a number of different ways perforated metal could be used for simple aesthetic purposes in a home.

If a designer wanted to build an attractive and functional structure such as a custom shaped reception desk, perforated metal could be used. The metal could be customized to a pattern that would please the client (perhaps a variant of their logo) and could support the weight and everyday use that a reception desk would need to withstand. The same would hold true for a sculptor or artist who wished to make a large scale installation piece. In using perforated metal, the artist would need to understand and make proper use of the material’s weight, weight-holding capabilities, sound-absorption or reverberation level, and other capacities.

Not only does Diamond Manufacturing offer a variety of standard perforated patterns that could be used for decorative purposes, but we are also able to make customized patterns to fulfill almost any imagined design need. We look forward to helping you find or create the best pattern for your project.

Architects, engineers and designers have a number of choices in regard to perforated materials. Architectural metal often must be strong as well as beautiful. Continue reading →

Architectural metal, a type of perforated material that is often favored by architects, engineers and designers, needs to be both visually appealing and of a form that can withstand the requirements set forth by a specific building application. Each architectural application will be unique, but as a whole architectural metal is designed with strength properties as well as aesthetic options.

A specific application involves using perforated metal as a screen that controls the light that enters a space. Designers or architects may seek out this type of material for a living or office space where the light levels could affect those using the space. The perforated material would act as a filter to control the light streaming into the space.

Another specific application use for architectural metal includes being a light barrier between two areas. This includes using architectural metal in a railing. If solid metal were used, the railing may be too heavy for the structure and users of the space would not be able to see through the sides. Perforated metal would allow for more visibility and less weight on the structure below, whether it be a ramp or stairwell.

Perforated metals are also used to cover things for their or human protection. In the case of radiator, which can heat up to be hot to the touch, a perforated metal covering could protect against accidents that could burn people, while allowing air to flow around the radiator.

If you would like to discuss your needs in regard to architectural metal, please contact us.

Perforated materials can be used in a variety of applications and knowing how perforated materials are typically used may help you see a possible opportunity for your company to use perforated material in a new way. After you have decided on your application needs, you will need to decide on the right pattern to order your perforated material. You will also need to decide on the material itself to use for your application. This is not always as simple as selecting a pattern that looks pleasing to the eye. Perforated material applications are often required to meet other sets of criteria besides appearance. Each pattern performs in a specific way and its’ properties and abilities in each application should be considered before use. There are perforated materials that perform well for applications involving everything from sound, visibility, and even electromagnetic shielding.

Diamond Manufacturing can produce thousands of different perforated patterns that solve a variety of needs. The blog posts that follow in this series will cover specific applications of perforated materials.

Earth Day, a day on which people of nations around the world can increase awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s beauty and ecosystem and raise funds to help those ends, was founded in the early 1970s. April 22 is considered Earth Day and a wide range of people extend that time to encompass a whole week’s worth of Earth-centric activities. In honor of Earth Day and Earth Week, we would like to take a moment and reflect on the recyclable and Earth-friendly perforated materials available from Diamond Manufacturing.

Green Architecture, the industry term for building with materials that are Earth-friendly, encompasses a number of different parts of an application. The design of the building itself, the materials used in construction, the process of putting the materials together, and the disposal of excess or scrap materials from the construction. Ultimately, all steps and materials used would be safe for the environment and easily recycled when that time came. Additionally, material used could have been recycled already from a different project’s materials.

If you would like to discuss opportunities available to you that can help promote sustainability, reduce depletion of resources due to recyclability, and the array of products that have been recycled already, please contact a Diamond Manufacturing representative today.

Perforated sheet is a form of perforated material, often metal, that Diamond Manufacturing offers to clients looking for a way to receive their perforated metal shipment in a flat and wide manner. Perforated sheet is the most common formation of perforated metal and is touted for its ease in handling and versatility of uses in various applications. It may be supplied flat, fabricated, and/or as finished product.

Perforated sheets typically begin as perforated coils that have been flattened. Their widths run up to 60” and length is typically maxed out at 250” due to shipping constraints. Depending on client preference, perforated sheets can be delivered with blank areas, fully perforated, or with margins.

Perforated tube is a form of perforated material, typically metal, that is available from Diamond Manufacturing. This particular form is popular to those in the automotive or filtration industries. Perforated tubes are used in a variety of automotive or filtration applications. Practically any pattern can be created in the perforated tube form by Diamond Manufacturing due to the proprietary system created to serve our customers. This unique system allows for tight tolerance during production that passes many of the most stringent inspections that can be offered to customers at a reasonable price.

Due to the varied needs of clients, this proprietary process makes sure to accommodate hole size variation – whether you need them all the same size or varied at specific rations. Additionally, the ends of perforated tubes can be straight or flared and they generally are made within 6” diameter and 30” of length.

Although Diamond Manufacturing has experience producing perforated tubes of just about any type of metal, in just about any level of thickness, you may wish to view our perforated tube tolerances guideline on our website to learn about specific offerings in this perforated form type.

Our comprehensive guide entitled Acoustical Uses for Perforated Metals: Principles and Applications that covers both theory and specific calculations written by the late Theodore J. Schultz, Ph.D., of the Industrial Perforators Association was validated by the Riverbank Acoustical Laboratories. If you wish to view a summary report of the tests conducted, please view our acoustical applications of perforated metals testing page.

The summary report on the tests conducted covers two acoustical capabilities of perforated metals:

1.	Allowing a maximum amount of sound to pass through
2.	Ability to alternate specific, narrow frequency ranges

The first capability is useful in the principal acoustical application of perforated metals: using the perforated metal as a facing for another layer. This ability allows the second layer material to absorbe the sound. The second capability in regard to frequency ranges, is extremely important for applications involving a Tuned Resonant Absorber.

The tests conducted had two major objectives:

1.	To determine which specifications would provide a high degree of sound transparency through perforated metal.
2.	To demonstrate Tuned Resonant Absorbers theories set forth by Dr. Theodore Schultz.

Again, please view our website or request a copy of the comprehensive guide if you wish to learn more about acoustical applications of perforated materials.
