To a brand new Wordpress site that is! I found out in June that my website host would no longer be hosting and I had to find someone to help me re-create it, and since I've always heard how great wordpress is, that's what I did. I found Theresa from Blogsforphotogs and she did an amazing job getting all of my content moved to one of her custom made blogsites. We only had about 3 weeks to get EVERYTHING moved over before my old site went down, but she got the job completed in time. We were actually emailing each other up 'til midnight the day before it went down, (which was July 4th!) I'm still learning wordpress and have a few things I want to update, so check back often at http://dianamiller.com/blog/ as I will no longer be updating this blog.

Composition Tip – Take Better Photos Using the Rule of Thirds

Want to add some impact to your photos? Consider using the Rule of Thirds, a very simple way to improve your composition. It goes like this:
1. Picture your viewfinder as being divided into three vertical sections and 3 horizontal sections (see image below).
2. When you go to take a picture (portraits, action, landscapes, you name it) try to have your main subject positioned at the intersection of the lines (on one of the four dots shown below).
3. That’s it! This simple rule has been used for decades by professionals as a way of adding interest and energy to their shots.

Karen Grehm called us in May and wanted to schedule her family portrait session. She had recently won a gift certificate at the St. Rose School auction worth $250 of Diana Miller Photography studio credit. Karen was ready to update her family portraits and wanted an outdoor session. We shared examples on our website of our outdoor family sessions here in Citrus Heights and talked about what exactly she was looking to get for her home. Karen knew she wanted some desk size 8x10's and 5x7 to give as gifts to the grandparents and family members. Beyond that, she wasn't sure what else she wanted. The family arrived for an 11am shoot on a beautiful spring day and we started shooting and having fun. The kids, Matthew and Hannah were just delightful. Mom and dad, Karen and Ken were super easy to work with and open to trying some different poses. After the session, we gave everyone refreshments, and started the download. We believe at DMP that your time is valuable, and for most sessions we will have your previews ready to view in about 20 minutes while you wait. You will watch a slideshow set to music on our 48 inch TV screen while you relax in our studio living room and enjoy all of the fun moments with your family :-)

Karen and Ken decided to go with 2 - 16x20 collage posters with a variety of adorable poses of the kids and the family, as well as package prints to share with family and friends. Family Portraits 101

When you call or email us at DMP, we will spend time chatting with you to get a good idea of what you are looking for so we can offer you the best price possible. We will send you our price list, which describes our full line of our portrait services, as well as a clothing guide, and information on displaying your portraits. If you would like to come in for a consult, It's helpful to bring any samples of photography/posing that have inspired you or given you ideas. Before your session, start thinking about what the end goal of the portrait session is. Is it a large traditional canvas portrait above the fireplace? A framed and matted piece over the sofa? Maybe something more modern, such as a wall collage, metal prints or an acrylic wall portrait? Or maybe a digital-style flush mount album or a coffee table style book? We have samples of all of those we will share with you. It is also extremely helpful to measure the wall space where you are visualizing your portrait, to give you an accurate idea of what size would look best in your space. After the session, you are invited to stay and relax either in the studio or outside in our portrait park for about 20 mins while we download and prepare your images for viewing. We will then present a slideshow so you can see your images right after your session - no more waiting! We ask that you come prepared to place your order after your portrait session, so that we can start working on it ASAP + you don't have to schedule another appointment to come back! Plan on about an hour to or so to go through the images, choose your favorites and place your order.

Don't forget: ALL of our work is 100% guaranteed. If you are not happy with your session images, we will gladly redo your session or you get a full refund. The same goes with your portraits. {Diana Miller: Sacramento Portrait and Wedding Photographer} FOCUS: Women's Photography group

I was so excited to host last month's FOCUS: Women's Photography group at my studio on April 1, 2011. Our group has been meeting off and on for over 10 years ( I would guess!) and consistently every month for the past 5 years...? Wow I need to check with Michelle Wood, who has been our "group mom", keeping it together with monthly emails and coordinating with us as we take turns hosting the group at our studios. It's always great fun and fellowship meeting with other women in town to discuss the ups and downs of being a professional photographer in this crazy economy. We laugh, share, eat, drink, hug, take pics (well usually I do, with my handy-dandy cell phone. I broke out the REAL camera for this momentous occasion!) We have also taken a group shot in front of my portrait wall by the creek the last 3 years and we got a couple of good shots again this time. I had to put the camera on my tripod with a timer as my family conveniently disappeared once the girls arrived...lol We luckily had wonderful weather so we could enjoy being outside together. I served a veggie and dip tray, lasagna, garlic bread, pesto-chicken pizza, chocolate and cookies as well as wine...plus many bottles were brought along by the ladies and shared throughout the night. Since we some newbies :-), we also took time to introduce ourselves and talk about our business and how we got into photography. Some of us did wedding photography, some portrait photography, some of us did both + corporate, boudoir and events, and we even had a free-lance journalist and sports photographer in the group too! I really enjoyed hearing about all of the awesome ladies who were there that night. Thank you to everyone for coming, and I look forward to seeing everyone in May!

Debbie called me back in January and explained she was looking for a photographer she could trust and felt comfortable with as she was starting a new chapter in her life. Debbie is 53 years old, and had been in a difficult marriage for many years. She finally made the decision to take control, got a divorce, and wanted to do something positive for herself. The EOS 40D becomes the sixth Canon 'prosumer' digital SLR, a line which started back in 2000 with the EOS D30, and how far we've come. It's been eighteen months since the EOS 30D and although on the surface the 40D looks like a fairly subtle upgrade there's a lot that makes this an even better camera. Of course we expect a step up in megapixels, and so the 40D comes with a ten million pixel CMOS sensor with the same sort of dust reduction as the EOS 400D, an ultrasonic platform which shakes the low pass filter. Other improvements bring the EOS 40D closer into line with the EOS-1D series, these include a move to the same page-by-page menu system, both RAW and sRAW (2.5 MP), 14-bit A/D converter and 14-bit RAW, cross-type AF points for F5.6 or faster lenses, a larger and brighter viewfinder, interchangeable focusing screens, a larger LCD monitor (3.0") and faster continuous shooting (6.5 fps).

{I thought this was a great little piece I read on the PPA.com website. The photos below I found just by searching on google images. A good example of amateur photography vs professional is how they can handle tricky lighting scenarios, such as backlighting, or photographing people on a sunny beach. Obviously, the photographer in the first photo didn't know how to handle the strong backlight, and the couple came out very dark, vs the second photo, the photographer was using additive lighting (probably strobe and/or reflector) to color correct and light the couple properly. - Diana

Affordable prices have put DSLR cameras in the hands of many people. You will find many parents toting around these large cameras, snapping shots of their kids at the park or during the school play. The truth is, most don’t know how to use these cameras effectively.

Even worse, almost everyone has a friend or knows someone with a “big” camera these days, and entrusts them with once-in-a-lifetime events, like their wedding. Craigslist.com is filled with ads from these so-called pro photographers. Their results are often disappointing.

Photography is much more than just having a “big” camera!

If I own a race car, does that make me a professional driver? No, certainly not. Having the gear is one thing, but knowing how to use it takes skill, training, and experience. Quality photography is no different. There are many tools that pro photographers use in post-processing that the average consumer simply does not have.

Although Lisa and John both attended California State University Chico and graduated a year apart, the couple didn’t meet at school. Instead, they were fated to meet through eHarmony. About a year-and-a-half after love bloomed online, the two got engaged.

Lisa was surprised by the proposal on the day of the engagement, although in the back of her mind, she had a hunch. John was extremely nervous. But the big question went off without a hitch, and the two shared a special day the next afternoon at the Special Olympics – John is a coach for one of the volleyball teams in the East Bay. Then in the evening, the couple announced the engagement at Lisa’s grandparent’s home over Chinese food and chocolate cake.

Lisa dove into wedding planning almost immediately. First she picked the venue, then a dress and a photographer. The spring wedding was held at the Yocha Dehe Golf Club at Cache Creek Casino Resort. The ceremony took place in the early evening on top of a hill overlooking the golf course. The 100 guests were in awe of the couple and the view.

The bride and groom paid tribute to their families on the special day. An empty chair draped with greenery sat in the first row of the ceremony in memory of Lisa’s father. Also, the bride carried a small white bible her mother carried on the day she was married to Lisa’s father, almost 50 years prior. Lisa also wore a crystal bracelet on her left wrist made by her mother.

Lisa’s mother wasn’t the only creative one in the bunch. The bride's best friend and matron of honor wore a dress she handmade from a pattern she copied from a design off of Project Runway, and also made Lisa’s garter and the ring-bearer pillows. The bride herself made all the dinner menus placed at each guest’s seat and the escort cards. She also came up with all of the table names, which were the couple’s favorite Disneyland rides and placed them in crystal picture frames.

More family was honored throughout the ceremony and reception including Lisa’s brother and mother walking her down the aisle to John. And the finishing touch was crystal-framed photos of both Lisa’s and John’s parents cutting their wedding cakes, which were placed next to the couple’s cake on the big day.

The most memorable parts of the wedding remained the couple’s intimate moments of the vows and their first dance; followed by the romantic setting during dinner of the sun setting behind the green hills as the couple looked through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors.

I just opened my account on Found Folios after looking through the beautiful and inspiring images that are shared online there. My first posting is one of my favorite fine art sessions, the Golden Gate Bridge. I took the photos lomography style with my Blackberry Pearl, and just had about the best time ever! It was such an interesting weather day there. I was driving across the bridge, leaving the city towards Marin County. The city was wrapped in fog and COLD! and I knew I wanted to spend the day somewhere warmer. As I was driving across the bridge, the fog started to lift and voila! it was bright and sunny. It was as if a curtain was right in the middle of the bridge, the SF side dark and foggy, the Marin side bright and sunny. So I parked at the visitor center and started walking back towards the fog, clicking away with my blackberry, and getting more excited with each new image I took. I had never really got up close to the steel, the bolts, the barbed wire, the signs, and was fascinated by everything. I came back with over 100 images, and started playing with them in photoshop, adding filters and contrast and just loved what I was getting. I actually even entered one of the images into PPSV print competition and got a gold ribbon! It just goes to show you, it's not the camera you are using, but the vision and creativity by the person using it. (Oh and it doesn't hurt to be on one of the most scenic bridges and areas in the world!)
