How To Own Your Own Piece Of Virtual Real Estate

Owning your own WordPress Blog is one of the most important things you can do for your business and to help brand yourself and your business online. With all the recent changes in the rules on advertising on Google, followed by some You Tube accounts being closed down owning your own virtual REAL ESTATE is no longer an OPTION .. it is a MUST HAVE.

I have recently integrated Off Road MLM into my personal blog DianeCossie .COM to bring more congruency into my marketing and to focus on delivering better quality information. There will be a lot more blog posts like this one on their way, you can subscribe to the blog using the RSS Feed in the top right hand corner to receive them all directly to your inbox.

I started out with Blogger, went to Typepad for a while, found out about WordPress shortly after that and began to hunt for good information on how to set up a wordpress blog. After a LOT of trial and error with Cpanel I eventually got there, so this is my gift to anyone looking for a comprehensive How To without the pain.

I self host both blogs with HOSTGATOR and that’s the bit where most people’s eyes glaze over and their next thought is usually “I have no clue how to do that” so they either outsource the project, use Blogger or Typepad to get around the problem or simply never start a blog of their own, so I thought I’d put together a series of “How To Set Up A WordPress Blog” and as a complete “non techie” myself you will see I do it the easiest way possible.

Step One : Buy Your Domain Name

Buy a Domain Name at Godaddy or your favourite “domain store” this will usually cost you less than $10.00 a year. Choose a DOT COM, DOT NET or DOT ORG as your first preference and if you are not using your own name, make sure you do some keyword research for a term in your niche because Google still ranks highly based on the domain name of your website.

Godaddy are going to put LOTS of choices your way between selecting your domain name and getting to the check out. Stay focused on what you went there to do which is to BUY A DOMAIN NAME for your blog.

They will offer alternatives if your domain name is taken, for example if JohnSmith.Com is taken, simply adding a pre-fix such as

Workwithjohnsmith.com or

Successwithjohnsmith.com may still be an option for you.

Step Two: You Will Need A Self Hosting Account

I can only share my experiences and how I do this process, this may cause laughter in some parts, but it just plain works and that is the only bit I am interested in right now .. just getting it going as fast as possible. So the next step is to choose a reliable self hosting platform and I chose the same one I saw lots of marketers using which is HOSTGATOR. At less than $10.00 per month I have found it great and as it has been over two year now I can confidently recommend it.

So now you have your DOMAIN NAME at GODADDY .. the next thing you need to do is to change the NAMESERVERS to your HOSTGATOR name servers as that is where you will host your WordPress Blog, your themes, plug ins and images and this is ALL there is to it ..

Step three: Add Your Domain Name To Your Self Hosting Account

Once you have bought your Domain name and your hosting and changed the nameservers you will need to ADD your DOMAIN NAME to your Hostgator account which is a really simple step by step procedure using the built in ADD ON DOMAIN feature in your Cpanel back office at Hostgator.

So now you have a new folder in the back office of your Cpanel control panel and you are ready to actually install your WordPress Blog onto your domain name. Once you have completed this part of the task you will access your blog through the WordPress Admin log in and away you go with your first post if you want to.

Step Four: Installing WordPress With Fantastico

By far the easiest way in which to install WordPress onto your blog is using the FANTASTICO smiley face software which is built into your Cpanel for you. So here we go with the next part of your blog installation :-

Now you have the basic WordPress Blog added to your domain name and your next task will be to customize it to suit your own particular style and brand name or business. I have opted to use the Thesis Theme which is a paid for Theme but there are plenty available from WordPress that are completely free. The Thesis theme was a recommended one from Mike Dillard’s Trrafic Formula 2.0 course and I found it very good for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) rankings.

Step Five: Upload And Extract Your Zip File Theme If Using Thesis

This video shows you how to upload the Thesis Theme which I downloaded as a Zip file to my hard drive. What you will usually find is that FTP (file transfer protocol) is usually required for this step and that is usually the next stumbling block for most people, but as I said before I just find a way to get these sort of things working and move on. So uploading a Theme from a zip file to your Cpanel without an FTP program …

Correction Step Six : Correcting Errors Is Easy Too

To INSTALL the Thesis theme this time round, I just had to hit the INSTALL button and it was live, this was much easier than having to add some code to the Custom CSS file in your Cpanel files, which would have been another stumbling block that would rule most people out of being able to complete the process. (If that is a little “foreign” don’t worry it seems it is easier than ever to INSTALL new WordPress Themes) the PLUG INS are also as easy as point, click and install which I will cover in the third in this mini series of blog posts for you.

There are HUNDREDS of great FREE THEMES ready to install from WordPress too, they are getting better all the time.

Whenever you are thinking about changing codes in your Theme always take a copy of what is already there FIRST and copy & paste it to Notepad so that in the event you mess it up, you can simply default to the original and try again.

In the video above I put in an incorrect TITLE and TITLE TAG during the last part of installation which is a hazard of a live video sometimes, so this is a useful addition to the above to correct the title and title tag within WordPress. You can adjust most things from within your WordPress Dashboard including your password.

So now you should have a WordPress Blog, installed on your domain name and self hosted which means you have now created your own piece of VIRTUAL REAL ESTATE, which after our list, or more importantly the relationship with your list .. your blog is close to being the most important asset in your business.

So now comes the FUN PART and from here on its all about stamping your personality and your content on your own Blog. One of the best features of owning a WordPress Blog is the variety of PLUG INS you can add to your blog that add funcitionality at the touch of a button. As I favour the THESIS THEME one of the best plug ins you can add is the THESIS OPEN HOOK plug in which is a simple click to install function.

The next stumbling block people will come across is a Blog Header Design. As you can see mine are all fairly similar as that is what I can do at this stage, but in essence it is a lot easier than you think when you have a few tools to hand. *Tip from Mike Dillard’s Traffic Formula 2.0 course is to make sure your vistors know what your Blog is about IN your header.

In this video I will show you how I use a two step process for any graphics I design using Microsoft Publisher (you can use a photo editor in the same way) followed by my favourite tool Snaggit ( from Tech Smith the makers of Camtasia ) which retails around £40.00 so it’s not going to break the bank.

There are plenty of photo editors that create the same effect for the background and with Snaggit you can add all sorts of enhancements to make your designs look unique and professional. What Do Online Businesses Provide You With That Offline Businesses Do Not?

As a small business owner myself for well over a decade I know exactly what it takes to build a business from scratch ~ blood, sweat, tears, equity, time and effort. The freedom to be able to fire your boss is one that can blinker you into throwing everything you’ve got at your business to make it work.

Most people start a business completely under funded and with unrealistic expectations of profitability ~ whether it is online or offline, and with the economic climate making it harder than ever to secure funding leaving most small businesses are up against the eight ball before they start.

The business model of most people’s dreams can quite quickly turn into more of a glorified job than what you were expecting. The biggest surprise is the LACK of the time and money freedom that you would expect from running your own business, most people assume JUST because you are in business, you are making a fortune!

After more market research into starting your own business a lot of people are drawn to franchises as the “safe” business model because of it’s turn key business opportunity and a full system in place to simply plug into that seemingly guarantees their success.

Do You Think Franchises Are “Safe” or “Risk Free”?

There is no such thing as a “safe” business. Risk is always involved, but of you do your market research, learn how to MARKET your business effectively, expecially ONLINE and you will increase the odds of success in any of your business ventures.

If you truly believe that either a retail business or a franchise is the answer to your dreams and you are ready to make your investment, then you should really do the maths when it comes to calculating realistic profits BEFORE you part with any of your savings.

The major difference in the offline / online business models in my eyes is that an OFFLINE Business usually has a HIGH OVERHEAD / LOW MARKETING BUDGET ratio when it comes to costs, making it increasingly difficult to establish enough sales at the right margin consistently to realise a profit. The same is true of a franchise and of course the initial start up investment can be extremely high, especially if you are thinking about opening a Mc Donalds for example.

However in an ONLINE business the ratio changes dramatically as you have a LOW OVERHEAD / HIGH MARKETING ratio to work with if you understand that investment and consistent marketing will be required to build your business online, just as it would offline. The chances of earlier profitablility are greatly increased and the start up investment is greatly diminished.

3. 15% Net Profit or less
4. 16 Hour Work Days As Owner

Word to the wise …THIS DOES NOT MAKE IT IS AN EASIER OPTION, the learning curve is HUGE but with a whole lot of determination and persistent and consistent action, just as you would if you had a store on the high street to open every day, you too could be sitting on a beach somewhere in the world checking your inbox to see how many sales you just made while you were sipping cocktails and soaking up the sun.

For a website to succeed, it must have effective direct response web copy that results in a percentage of visitors taking some kind of action. There is very little point in getting traffic to your website if none of the visitors pick up the phone, subscribe to your offer or newsletter or buy your product or your service. For a business to succeed for the long term it needs to also understand the importance of direct response email marketing.

Generating a response means more than simply impressing web visitors with some really cool graphics and flashy banners your number one way in which to build your business whether it is a small business or a home based business is to capture email addresses from as many of your visitors as possible. The lack of effective direct response email marketing in multi-level marketing type businesses that simply use a replicated company website contributes to the constant struggle most multi-level marketers face when they are trying to build that type of business.

If you are selling something on your website, the chances are that less than 5% of your site’s visitors will ever buy your product which is why the funded proposal concept is vital to your cash flow and your long term survival. It is also a vital part of your direct response email marketing which should be a blend of relevant information, invitations and direct response offers that will assist your subscribers in some way.

There are some vital elements to creating a direct response email that is likely to be opened and read and in doing so provide you with a response to your offer.

1. A compelling subject line. The subject line must be irresistible but not a hyped up marketing message or an advert, each one of us is bombarded with around 3,500 commercial messages per day so when you finally get some peace and quiet time to go through your emails, the last thing you want to see is another advert.

2. The first sentence should frame who you are and it should establish rapport. Your direct response email marketing efforts should always have a real person behind, it cannot be faceless. Introduce a couple of ice breaking sentences that make you a real human being to your audience.

3. Stay on topic and get to the point. You should convey your message or the promise of the benefit to come like a journalist using the most important information first and leave the least important pieces of information to the end.

4. Just make each piece of direct response email marketing that you do one message. Multiple messages within one email combined with the fact that email readers have short attention spans makes a mess of what you are trying to do which is to build a relationship with your list.

5. Provide value at all times and do not just try and sell them stuff in every email. They are paying you a compliment by opening and reading the information you have sent so return the favour and offer them something of value for their time.

Whether you are an online business owner or a bricks and mortar business owner, direct response email marketing is something you should be incorporating in your every day business activities.

When you are just starting out in the online business world feeling overwhelmed and confused is perfectly normal and an experience we all share. Internet marketing is vast and if you try to take it all in at once you will feel like you are drinking from a fire hydrant. The best way to think about your business is to think about fine tuning your marketing plan to include strategic marketing planning.

You will hear a lot of people use the term throw enough mud at a wall and something will stick and in the start up phase of your business especially if you are using paid advertising this can be your only choice. But when you start to gain more experience you must include more strategic marketing planning to save your time and efforts being wasted and your frustration growing at your apparent lack of results.

1. Start with the end in mind of exactly what you are trying to achieve and commit it to paper. For example if you are building an online network marketing business you will have a good idea of how many people you will need in your team to earn the income you are seeking.

2. Reverse engineer your business plan creating step by step support goals that when you complete each step no matter how small it is will result in you moving closer to your goal in your business.

Who Are Your Target Customers? FYI It is never everyone!

3. Build customer profiles for each campaign you create and think of yourself as looking at your business from a third party point of view, very often we can see what others should do in their business far easier than we can see in our own.

4. Be as congruent as possible in everything you do online, it is the most transparent way of carrying out your business ever invented. To be successful in business you need to focus on the essentials that will drive your business forward and your number one activity should be lead generation.

5. Do not try and spread yourself too thin or you will be spinning your wheels trying to learn this weeks strategy before having just focused on one thing until you become proficient at it. For example if you focus on article marketing keep writing articles until you start producing leads for your business. When one of those leads becomes a sale of any type you are considered proficient when you have generating one penny more than you have spent and with a free strategy that will of course be one sale.

6. Do not get too distracted in the social media space be very strategic in what you are trying to do. Facebook is a great business networking tool but in strategic marketing planning that means running campaigns and being human more than getting lost in strangers photo albums.

7. You will have heard the term failing to plan is planning to fail and with strategic marketing planning it is no different. Being busy versus taking time to brainstorm what needs to get done, in what number and by what date is the main difference in being aligned with your goals or not.

Even though the information you need is probably in the manual that came with your business opportunity the online world is a far more distracting environment in which to build a business that without strategic marketing planning you will find yourself in perpetual state of getting ready to get ready instead of completing tasks daily that will be the building blocks for your business.

This week’s Millionaire Mindset Tip comes from one of the first books I ever read that literally blew me away Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki if you have it on your bookshelf gathering dust .. pick it up and read it this week to rekindle everything you felt about it’s message when you first read it.

“In 1974 Ray Kroc, the founder of Mc Donald’s was asked tos peka to the MBA class at the University of Texas at Austin. After a powerful and inspiring talk, teh class adjourned and the students invited Ray to join them for a few beers. Ray graciously accepted.

“What business am I in?” Ray asked, the group.

Everyone laughed, the MBA students thought he was just fooling around so he asked the question again, finally one student responded “Ray, who in the world does not know you are in the hamburger business.”

Ray chuckled. “That is what I thought you would say.” He paused and then quickly said “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m not in the hamburger business. My business is real estate.”

Ray knew that the primary business focus was to sell hamburger franchises, but he never lost sight of was the location of each franchise.

“Effectiveness is doing the things that get you closer to your goals. Efficiency is performing a given task (whether it is important or not) in the most economical manner possible. Being efficient without regard to effectiveness is the default mode of the universe.

I would consider the best door to door salesperson as efficient, that is refined and excellent at selling door to door without wasting time .. BUT UTTERLY INEFFECTIVE. He or she would sell more using a better vehicle such as e-mail or direct mail.

This is also true for the person who checks e-mail 30 times per day and develops an elaborate system of folder rules. I was a specialist at such professional wheel-spinning. It is efficient on some perverse level, but far from effective.”

Truisms to keep in mind:-

1. Doing something unimportant well does not make it important.

2. Requiring a lot of time does not make a task important.
