Ever since I read the New York Best selling book, Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T Kiyosaki I became one of the millions and millions of people who started to challenge the way in which we are brought up to think about money.

Robert Kiyosaki championed the need for personal financial education as being the only real solution to the economic crisis we see all around us today. At  the same time as more school leavers open their exam results knowing that a university degree does not guarantee a job, even more blue collar workers face redundancies and an uncertain future as the economic recession shows no signs of recovery.

In Robert Kiyosaki’s book “Why We Want You To Be Rich” co-written with Donald Trump they rallied the message “We are losing our middle class, and a shrinking middle class is a threat to the stability of America and to world democracy itself. We want you to be rich so you can be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem.”

Robert Kiyosaki has gone on to write his latest book, Conspiracy of the Rich ONLINE , which in itself is a fascinating concept on the way we prefer to learn about current affairs and get the latest updates information as fast as possible.

Today’s MINDSET INSIGHT is all about leading yourself and others through challenging moments (and there will be challenges for absolute certainty, life throws you a curve ball when you least expect it, and I can tell you I have had my fair share.)

The REAL question you need to ask yourself is what kind of leadership we can demonstrate during those times. I remember watching Bob Proctor on stage as he explained that as we get older, the LAST thing we need to do is SLOW DOWN, in fact what we should do is CALM DOWN.

Having been mentored myself I remember the FIRST INSTRUCTION all the time was CALM DOWN, DON’T REACT.

In small business and big business the pressure of the phone ringing all day with problems to solve means that that the whole day is usually spent FIGHTING FIRES.

You will find many business owners develop a talent for problem solving and it also makes them feel as though they have to do everything in the business themselves because it will fall apart without them.

Remember if you are a MAJOR COG in your business .. you are also a MAJOR CLOG!

REACTING in a moment is one of the key character traits you need to address if you are to create a successful mindset, when all around you seems URGENT then you have not accomplished the ultimate task which is to become excellent at PROBLEM AVOIDANCE.

It is all down to strategic planning and putting those plans into action not reacting to every minute event that bears no relevance to the BIGGER PICTURE.

Draw inspiration from people like Chris Widener and focus on these vital points when the going gets tough ….

1. Keep you eye on the BIGGER PICTURE. When things go wrong the tendency is to focus all your energy on the problem. Of course we need to address the problem but do not get caught up being PART of it. A leader sees the BIGGER PICTURE and steers a course through the problem keeping their eye on their VISION.

2. Don’t Get Caught Up In Friendly Fire. When times get tough do not start shooting each other. Rather than focusing on the job in hand, people start to find fault with each other or their sponsor, or their business. When the heat is on people say things they do not really mean because fear and anger take over. A leader rises above it and refuses to be drawn into it.

3. Be first to sacrifice. Leaders get in the trenches and are the first to sacrifice and take the viewpoint that what I do in the short term will be repaid ten fold in the long term. This sort of action gains loyalty.

4. Remain Calm. Nobody is immune to panic and people frequently do exactly that. A Leader values the time required to think things through (as I am trained in lateral thinking, I tend to see things six ways). To be able to remain calm and steer people through calmly is a skill that takes time to master.

5. Motivate. In tough times people feel down, it is only natural. They cannot see how it is all going to work out and therefore have an even harder time getting going. A leader must focus on being the optimistic motivator and above all will seek to show how the end result will be good.

6. Create Small Wins. One of the ways in which to motivate is to create small wins. When up against tough times people wonder IF they can win. A leader creates opportunities for the team TO win.

7. Keep a sense of humor. Hardly ANYTHING in life cannot be laughed about, a leader keeps perspective about the work / life balance and knows what is really the most important. Keep the ability to laugh at yourself and the situations you will find yourself in even if you are a serious entrepreneur at heart.

Napolean Hill’s classic book Think and Grow Rich is one of the most recommended books for understanding how your mind works.

I remember watching Bob Proctor on stage talking about this amazing book that he had been reading for over 50 years and was still fascinated by how the mind works.

He asked the question to the audience “If you car was broken you would take it to a garage to get it fixed.”

He then asked the audience “Where would you go to get your MIND fixed if it was broken?”

Most people do not even realise that their mindset IS broken, in fact nobody really knows what anybody’s MIIND looks like so when you hear that the biggest challenge you have to overcome is MINDSET first then you begin to see how important it is to network with people who constantly demand more from themselves and have a desire to be the best in whatever they choose to do.

The wake up moment for me a few years ago when I picked up a copy of Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich was understanding that what holds most people back is the FEAR of POVERTY.

Some of the symptoms to watch out for are:-

INDIFFERENCE. Commonly expressed through lack of ambition, a willingness to tolerate poverty and accept whatever compensation life offers without protest. Mental and physical laziness, lack of imagination, enthusiasm and self control.

INDECISON. The habit of permitting others to do ones thinking, being incapable of organising your own thought process to make a quick, well informed decision based on a few facts and a determination to see it through.

DOUBT. Generally expressed through third parties and excuses designed to cover up, explain or apologise for ones failures. Sometimes expressed in the form of eny of others who are more successful.

WORRY. Usually expressed by finding fault with others, a tendency to spend beyond your means, neglect of personal appearance, intemperance of alcohol or other “props” and lack of self-reliance.

OVERCAUTION. The habit of looking for the negative side of every circumstance, thinking and talking of possible failure instead of concentrating upon the means of succeeding. Waiting for the “right time” to begin putting ideas and plans into action until the waiting becomes a permanent habit.

PROCRASTINATION. The habit of putting off until tomorrow what should have been done last year. Spending time creating excuses and reasons why you did not do something instead of just getting it done. Bargaining with life for a penny instead of demanding prosperity, contentment and happiness.

By far and away the most powerful few pages in any book I have ever read and having always had a fascination for how people THINK it is a continuous joy to be able to delve into the pages of Think and Grow Rich to find continued inspiration from its pages today even though it was written in 1937.

I believe it was Jim Rohn who said that the road to success has been the same for over 3000 years.

Fascinating!

Robert Kiyosaki talks about the world needing a two tier schooling system, one school system for the employee mindset and the second for the entrepreneurial mindset. They are both extremely different.

There are often surprising shared life challenges that high achievers and top earners have overcome early in life to defy the odds apparently against them doing so.

Many of them have never been straight A students, in fact most have never graduated or been seen to be “school academic” in any way.

Very they often overcome physical challenges of some kind to succeed in a sporting achievement that was against all odds and have gone through a mental and physical “pain barrier” to achieve success when others said they shouldn’t even try.

It is a high proportion of those same personalities that have gone on to become very wealthy and achieved top earner status in their companies.

So what does it take to be classed as “Psychologically Unemployable” as Jeffrey Combs puts it?

Well if you currently work every day for someone else, just for fun today here are some clues :-

1. You often feel like a caged animal pacing up and down waiting for 5.00pm to arrive so you can express your own sense of freedom the moment you step outside.
2. You find yourself “plotting your escape” from the Rat Race every 20 minutes or so between phone calls and office “chat.”
3. Your worst moments are when “your boss” decides to bestow “his or her wisdom” on “the best way to do something” when clearly it isn’t.
4. The moment described as “this is what makes it all worthwhile” when you open your payslip is when you are screaming in your head “you have GOT to be kidding me?”
5. You find yourself wondering why everyone seems to put so much energy into NOT doing something instead of just getting it done.
6. You start feeling that déjà vu feeling of being sat at a desk with a bunch of strangers you are supposed to get along with feels familiar and then you realise that is exactly what you did at school all those years.
7. You know Mel Gibson’s Braveheart speech by heart and mutter it under your breath every time it is your turn to get the coffee.
8. You start to think there must be more to life than soap operas, re-runs on TV and political debates that bear no relevance on your future whatsoever!
9. You realise you are the only one who says Good Morning and actually mean it.
10. You know that you are the only one who goes home at night and then goes to work on your business that will get you out of the Rat Race forever and it excites you that so many people will NEVER do what it takes.

People often ask me “is internet marketing hard?” I often smile and think to myself “is working 30 years for someone else getting a few weeks off per year with your loved ones easy?”

There is a famous fable called The Grasshopper and The Ant which I always think of at this time of year as the sun beams down and the holiday season starts in earnest.

In the story the Grasshopper is hopping about chirping and singing to its heart’s content when a heavily laden Ant walked by. The Grasshopper chirps to the Ant “Where are you going with that heavy thing?”

The Ant does not stop; he just replies “To the Ant Hill, this is my third one today” The Grasshopper asks the Ant “Why not come sing with me instead?”

The Ant replies “I am helping to store food for the winter; I think you should think about doing the same.”

The Grasshopper looks puzzled and shouts “We have plenty of food now, winter is months away.”

The story ends of course with the Ant passing the dying Grasshopper later in the year knowing that it is best to prepare for the days of necessity ahead.

The story came into my head when I read an email today about a GREAT viewpoint of the current worldwide financial crisis and what society is going to have to face up to in the coming months and years of recovery.

Over the previous few decades when there has been a bad financial downturn where people’s jobs were at risk they still had a little nest egg in their homes. Maybe 10% to 20% equity, so they would sell it off and either rent or downsize their home to a smaller home and maybe relocate to a new job in a new area.

This time around homes, on average have also lost value and the lending criteria has tightened leaving no room to borrow your way out again, as a result it has left many people between a rock and a hard place.

At the same time as this never before in history sequence of events comes a never before seen in history opportunity for a person to learn a new skill, start a business and have a worldwide audience for that business, all in the span of one week.

As more and more people turn to the World Wide Web as a solution to their problem (earning extra income) the opportunity exists now for people to position themselves as the future experts that will benefit tremendously on the greatest transfer of wealth in history.

You can either choose to be one of the Ants that is putting ALL the work in now by learning how to market online, build their own brand and skill sets or you can just carry on ignoring the bigger picture and face the next few years maybe more scraping by for a living.

At some point, whether it is now or in the near future “the computer WILL say no” to the incessant cycle of borrowing your way out of a problem, whether it is at a personal level, a business level or a country level.

The next era of wealth creation should you choose to be a part of it is online and if you want the best in online education and wealth creation in one business, I highly recommend you look at this in great detail.

There is a famous quote by Helen Keller that is key to achieving your goals “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.”

This is a question you should ask yourself every day – “Do You Know Your Vision?” Nobody can give you a vision of your life but you. It is UNIQUELY yours and if it not bigger than you then quite simply you are not thinking big enough.

I chuckled when I read about how the number one personal finance author and multi-millionaire Robert Kiyosaki fell over himself when Donald Trump suggested they write the book “Why We Want You To Be Rich.”

The book’s chapter is entitled “MILLIONAIRE meets BILLIONIARE”. One had the VISION of a Billionaire, the other only of a Millionaire and at that moment the Millionaire felt small.

Robert Kiyosaki reflected on the way home from that brief meeting “Who am I to write a book with Donald Trump?”

How fascinating is that? I think back to when I started out on my self titled Passive Income March my “vision” was earning £1,000 a month residual income - how pathetic is that? I’ve since achieved that in a day!

Thankfully I have an unlimited reservoir of knowledge within our online community that expanded that rather rapidly!

Most people are completely unaware of the paradigm shift required to expand their mindset into first being able to SEE their vision and secondly being able to BELIEVE they can ACHIEVE IT.

The only way in which to approach your business is to start with the end in mind, the greater the vision, the more resources it will require and that will stretch you and make you grow. We all get the same 24 hours in every day and frequently people wish for more time, however what you need to do is sharpen is your focus, for that you need more discipline.

What if you were suddenly handed the keys to an office that made you Magazine Editor of In Style Magazine next Monday morning, what would you do? How would show up, how would you handle the calls, the marketing, the editing, the quality of content? How would you make it more profitable?

That is how you should approach your own business, your network marketing business is NOT your business, it’s an income stream the only business model you should be running is “YOU INC.”

Where To Find Your Vision

1. Look WITHIN you – ask yourself what moves you, what do you get excited about? 97% of people look outside of themselves.

3. Look AROUND you – fulfilling your destiny requires having the right people in your life, people who have achieved what you came to find and are willing to share with you what you need to do.
4. Look AHEAD of you – read that Helen Keller quote again – you have to BELIEVE in what you cannot see right now but know you can create it.
5. Look BESIDE you – what resources are available to you right now, systems, mentors, books, conferences, courses.

When my daughter was younger, she was an avid collector of “The Babysitter Club” books, in fact some of the covers fell off because they had been read so often, so when we made our regular trips to the USA or Canada to her delight we were able to find new copies and one off editions of “The Babysitters Club” books that would never have graced the bookshelves in the UK, and therefore never have brought such moments of joy into her life.

On most of those trips, my daughter managed to accomplish two things, one was she now knew adventures, characters and stories about her “Babysitter Club” friends that most of the other UK based fans never would (giving her the slight edge )and secondly she was also able to position herself as an authority or an expert having amassed a huge collection of knowledge about “her niche” in the process.

On those same trips, I picked up my first personal development book, “The Magic of Thinking Big” by David Schwartz and started writing my first “journal” in a Mickey Mouse Notebook (literally a picture of Mickey Mouse sitting in a Director’s Chair from Walt Disney World) which is still a great source of inspiration today.

I can see from page one of that journal everybody’s “starting point” because of the entries I have made, picking out choice quotations, snippets of paragraphs so that I would always have reference to them forever. These were my “diamonds”, choice pieces of wisdom that I never knew existed until I opened those pages for the first time.

Page one of my journal reads, what three qualities millionaires possess:-

1. A Passion To Succeed
2. Almost Obsessive Attention To Detail
3. Their Minds Are Always Alert

The note underneath that opening statement way back in 1999 was “Losing belief in yourself leaves doubts, you’re not born that way.”

In those days (pre-broadband) the ability to just type on a keypad the name of a book, be able to buy it within minutes and have it shipped to your door the next day did not exist and I am so thankful that I began my journey of personal development a decade ago, what if it had never begun?

I cannot convey how enriching and rewarding it is to be a life long student of personal development, constantly and continually dipping in to the magnificence of resources we have to share knowledge with today. Yet in the days where so much is now available we seem to be less inclined to seek it out. Perhaps it has been replaced by the need to be able to get to “The Hidden Level of Platform 3″ in the latest Computer Game?

I cannot bear to think what my life would be like today if we had not stumbled across those Acres of Diamonds called Bookstores that are literally at your fingertips online if you wish to take your first step, or do yourself an enormous favour if your first step has already been taken but you haven’t “exercised properly” in a little while, re-visit the “Wells of Wisdom” if you have them gathering dust on your bookshelf – and understand one of the Laws that Andy Andrews writes about in his book  “The Traveller’s Gift” is “I will seek wisdom.”

As a component part of being a marketer and an entrepreneur, your daily habits should include, personal development, exercise and nutrition, marketing and connecting with people.

My primary company invests in a Vice President of Leadership for its members so mindset training, plugging into a network of multi-millionaire marketers and access to a never ending supply of inspiration is par for the course.

This video struck a chord with me, after listening to a John Jackson interview  on one of the Mastermind Calls and if you have never watched it then be my guest now.

Having watched and absorbed the concept, why not apply it to your business and give yourself a complete inventory of the next few days. In fact if you have been online for over a year, it may take several weeks.

Ask yourself, “What would happen to my business if I just did 1% more than anyone else for the next 12 or 24 months?”

Firstly that challenges your commitment, and that is a good thing, but secondly it raises all sorts of questions that you need to answer about each element of your business.

For example :-

What affiliate products do you already have access to but never even try to promote in anyway. Why not complete a video or better still a webinar that explains the benefits of the product and how it has helped you in your business. Build it into your sales funnel as a funded proposal to automate the process over and over.

What training or personal development programmes have you already listened to once or twice, that are now collecting dust on the bookshelf? You owe it to yourself to re-charge your energy and inspiration each day from doses of wisdom that will build your momentum by 1% each day you do this.

What ongoing testing and measuring are you doing of your marketing efforts on a week to week basis? Do you know what is working and what is not? What would happen to your results if you found what was working and simply did another 1% more of it?

Just by committing to doing 1% more than anyone else each day will get you the results that are likely to be just like the water temperature in the video – just one degree away from boiling point.

Ask yourself another question – what if your competition did all the above and you didn’t?
