Lalbaug cha Raja - From the Pages of History | Ganeshotsav 2025

Think of Lalbaugcha Raja and what's the first thing that comes to your mind? Grandeur? Celebrities? Crowd? Wish Fulfilling? Well, Mumbai's very own beloved 'Raja' had humble beginnings. Ever wondered what the initial idols looked like? Or how the mandal was formed? Read on to know all about one of Mumbai's renowned pandals - Lalbaugcha Raja.

The Mandal - which was then known as the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal (Lalbaug) was set up in 1934 in a simple locality, which was then known as Peru Chawl. The chawl and nearby market was forced to shut in 1932 and the locals - mostly fishermen and vendors, vowed to get a Ganpati if their wish was fulfilled. As their vow was fulfilled, the locals formed a committee and in 1934, the first ever idol was welcomed! The ganpati became famous as the 'Market cha Raja' or 'Market cha Ganpati'. As more and more devotees began queueing up to make a wish or fulfil their vows, Navsacha Ganpati and Lalbaugcha Raja became popular names.

The Ganpati idol of Lalbaugcha Raja has been created and designed by the Kambli family of Mumbai since 1935. Earlier, the idol would change every year as per theme and backdrop. Every year, the Mandal would pick a unique theme, ranging from independence struggle to mythological stories & social issues. According to locals, the mandal played a key role during the freedom struggle. In 1949, they have even had a Mahatma Gandhi inspired idol.

However, post 1990, things changed. The overall set up became much simpler, with just a basic backdrop. The idol was seated on a king style throne. But, the idol features and pose would change every year (till 2007). Some felt it matched the name given by locals, which is - Lalbaug cha Raja (King of Lalbaug). As crowds began to swell, the space required for themes & decorations, also became a major problem (as the pandal lane is narrow, with very little space in and around). Hence, sticking to a standard idol was seen as a good option. Since 2007 (till now), all idols have had the same features and pose. However, since 2015, the latest addition has been a unique throne (prabhaval). Some of the recent ones include Owl in 2016 (Goddess Laxmi's Vahan), and a Kurma Avatar (Turtle) in 2017. During the pandemic, the mandal organised a blood donation drive instead of the usual grand celebration in 2020. The following year, a smaller version of the idol was worshipped by the mandal trustees and members (large scale celebrations were cancelled across the country due to the pandemic, hence devotees were not allowed inside the pandal and other premises).

Adding a divine layer of symbolism and grandeur, this year’s Lalbaug cha Raja is a visual homage to Tirupati Balaji, both in spirit and design. Sculpted by the masterful Santosh Ratnakar Kambli of Murtikar Shree Kambli Arts, the idol dons a regal rani-pink velvet dhoti and an angavastram bearing the sacred SriVari namam — the iconic mark of Lord Venkateswara. His poised stance, with a chakra in one hand and a conch shell in the other, echoes themes of protection, power, and spiritual calm. Framed by golden pillars topped with elephant sculptures and his loyal vaahan, the mushak, the setup resembles a divine palace radiating opulence. The intricate decor, envisioned by art designer Yogesh Popat’s team, beautifully bridges South Indian temple aesthetics with Mumbai’s festive spirit, making this year's celebration both visually captivating and spiritually resonant.

Did you know? In 2011, the Kambli family became the first idol sculptors to patent the Lalbaug cha Raja idol design. As the demand for replicas went up and several other sculptors began copying the idol's style and features, Ratnakar Kambli (who currently heads Kambli arts) applied for a patent, making this the first ever case of patent application for an idol.

Over the years, while themes and idols have changed, one thing remains the same. The mandal, including locals, have always taken a step ahead when it comes to spreading awareness on social issues. Today, while the mandal does not have backdrops based on social activities, they organise events that help several major causes. Some of the prominent causes includes a dialysis centre, regular blood donation drives, plasma donation camp during the covid-19 crisis, computer training institutes with nominal fees, free IAS coaching among others.

No wonder they say - The King's empire is filled with love and support for everyone.

Ganesh Utsav is just a few days away, and devotees across the city are awaiting the first glimpse of Bappa with utmost patience and heartfelt excitement. Mumbaikars are all set to celebrate the much-awaited festival, and if you're out and about in the city, you will already spot various events marking the ‘Aagman Sohala’ (the ceremonial welcome of Lord Ganesha).

One of the most iconic and beloved pandals in Mumbai, Lalbaug cha Raja, is once again in the spotlight. Known for its spiritual significance and magnificent setups every year, the mandal is gearing up to welcome lakhs of devotees. The first look of Lalbaug cha Raja was unveiled on August 24, and Bappa’s divine presence left everyone in awe.

A Royal Tribute to Tirupati Balaji

This year’s 10-day celebration is nothing short of grand. Lalbaug cha Raja has been sculpted by the renowned Santosh Ratnakar Kambli of Murtikar Shree Kambli Arts, and the idol itself is a breathtaking tribute to Tirupati Balaji. Dressed in a regal rani-pink velvet dhoti and an angavastram adorned with the sacred SriVari namam, the divine mark of Lord Venkateswara; Bappa’s look this year blends traditional elegance with deep symbolism. In one hand, he holds a chakra, and in the other, a conch shell. Both powerful symbols of divinity, strength, and protection. His serene expression radiates calm and blessings. The idol is flanked by golden pillars, topped with intricately crafted elephants and his trusted vaahan, the mushak, creating the aura of a royal golden palace. The decor, designed by Yogesh Popat’s team, draws inspiration from South Indian temple architecture while maintaining the spirit of Mumbai’s vibrant celebration.

Darshan Details for Devotees

Like every year, devotees have two Darshan options. The first is the Mukh Darshan queue, which allows visitors to have Bappa’s Darshan from a short distance. This queue is relatively quick, usually taking around 30-45 minutes.

The second option is the Navsachi Rang, a special line for devotees who have made vows and wish to seek blessings through charan sparsh (touching the feet of the idol on the main podium). This queue involves a much longer wait, typically 10 to 11 hours, and can extend to 18 hours on especially crowded days, such as weekends.

Both queues will begin with a morning aarti at 4:00 AM on August 27, 2025. Darshan will remain open round-the-clock until Visarjan Day, which falls on September 6, 2025.

Travel Information for Devotees

If you are planning to visit, here’s how you can reach the pandal:

By train, those on the Central line can get down at either Chinchpokli or Byculla station. If you’re traveling via the Western line, the nearest stop is Lower Parel. From there, it’s about a 7 to 10-minute walk. The Mukh Darshan queue can be accessed from B.R. Ambedkar Road. A useful landmark to look out for is the Lalbaug Market.

By road, several BEST buses operate from all parts of the city. However, keep in mind that a portion of the road near Ganesh Gully is usually closed during the 10-day festival. You can get off at Bharatmata Cinema bus stop and walk toward Lalbaug Market. On your way, you can also visit other prominent mandals such as Mumbai cha Raja and Tejukaya Mansion.

While public transport is highly recommended due to traffic and limited space, if you're planning to drive, there are a few pay-and-park facilities available in the area, including locations near S.S. Rao Road (Parel), G.D. Ambedkar Road (Kalachowky), Cottongreen (near the railway station), and Dr. B.A. Road near Byculla (East). From most of these parking spots, expect to walk around 10 to 15 minutes to reach the main pandal area.

I can’t think of a single soul who will walk out of the theater without a tear in their eye. A standout performance of the film comes from Akshay Khanna, whose portrayal of the ruthless Emperor Aurangzeb is nothing short of mesmerising. His performance feels effortless, as he sinks deep into the character, embodying the cold, calculating nature of the emperor with subtlety and precision. His ability to capture the complexity of Aurangzeb—ruthless in his ambitions yet burdened by his own fears and insecurities—adds layers to the character, making him far more than just a historical villain. For a film set during the Maratha empire, the score leans too heavily on a Mughal-inspired sound, which fails to capture the pulse of the Marathi heartland. Tracks like “Jaane Tu” and “Toofan” do little to elevate the film’s emotional tone. In scenes such as Kaushal’s grand entry in Burhanpore or the coronation sequence; a more vibrant, traditional score infused with the beats of Maharashtrian dhol and tasha would have been ideal. Unfortunately, the music does not add much value and could have been a lot more immersive.

The film’s editing, too, leaves something to be desired. Some scenes feel unnecessarily abrupt, especially when transitioning between the Maratha and Mughal narratives. For example, a scene focusing on the Marathas strategizing is followed by a jarring cut to the Mughals discussing their own plans. The pacing also suffers in the first half, which tends to feel a bit dragged. Fortunately, the second half compensates for these issues, with the climactic 40 minutes of the film offering an intense emotional rollercoaster. The final act—brilliantly shot and emotionally charged—takes the film to new heights, leaving you overwhelmed with awe, pride, and heartbreak. The emotional impact of the conclusion is so profound that it is impossible to leave the auditorium without being moved to tears.

In conclusion, Chhaava is a must-watch for its glorious depiction of the Maratha Empire and the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. While there are a few areas where the film could have been improved—namely the music, background score, and editing—the performances and the breathtaking climax more than make up for it. Top Films to watch at the JIO MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2023

It’s back! The JIO MAMI Mumbai Film Festival is back after a three year break (paused due to the pandemic), and it gets bigger in 2023 with a special focus on South Asia. Once again, cinephiles will be busy chalking their respective schedules to ensure they don’t miss any of the best films that will be screened this year. The euphoria to register themselves, the crazy excitement hop from one venue to another and the fascinating conversations at workshops, exclusive events makes this festival one of the most important event in a cinephile’s calendar. Moreover, this year the event will be hosted across eight different venues, including the beautiful NMACC (Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre).

The festival, which will be hosted from October 27 to November 5, will screen over 250 films from over 70 countries, filmed in various languages. And, here's the surprise - the gala will witness over 40 World premieres, 45 Asia premieres, 70 South Asia premieres and close to 13 interesting sections. Needless to say, there is a lot of planning required to ensure you catch up on the best films. So, in order to make your life a tad bit easy, we have listed some of the top films, which you can watch out for. Take out your diaries and jot down the list already!

Maestro

Starring: Carey Mulligan, Bradley Cooper

Based on the life of Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre; Maestro highlights Bernstein's work and professional life, while exploring the couple's journey and experiences through love, betrayal and music. The Buckingham Murders

Perfect Days

Touted to be 2023's most promising films, 'Perfect Days' is a German-Japanese joint production, and earned lead actor Koji Yakusho the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival. Set in Tokyo, the film highlights a simple approach towards life by the central protagonist, who essays the role of a toilet cleaner.

Vasudhaiva Kutumbaka (The World is Family)

Directed by: Anand Patwardhan

The film premiered at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) and received acclaim. It promises to be one of Patwardhan's most personal films till date, focusing on his parents', their family history and documenting moments from the tumultuous period India's independence.

First glimpse of Lalbaug cha Raja | Ganesh Chaturthi 2023 | Darshan timings, Travel and Other Details

Ganesh Utsav is just a few days away, and devotees are awaiting the first glimpse of Bappa with utmost patience and lots of enthusiasm. Mumbaikars are ready to celebrate the much awaited festival, and one can witness various events marking the 'Aagman Sohala' of Bappa. Lalbaug cha Raja - the popular mandal based in Lalbaug, is one of the several favourite pandals that is all set to witness high footfall this year too. Amidst much fanfare, the first look of Lalbaug cha Raja was revealed on Friday (September 15). And needless to say, Bappa's royal avatar made for a beautiful glimpse.

This year too, the 10-day long celebration will be a grand affair.And, it will also be a poignant moment for the mandal as well as several loyal devotees, who have over the years, enjoyed the stunning backdrop and decor created by renowned art director - Late Nitin Chandrakant Desai. Every year, Desai's stunning art work and touch of royalty would turn into a big attraction during the festive season. Post 2015, he also started designing the throne.

This year, the celebration shall witness one of Desai's final work as an artist. For this year, the theme is designed to pay a tribute and mark the 350th year of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's coronation. Based on the 'Raigad Killa' backdrop, Lalbaug cha Raja shall be seen sitting on a majestic 25-ft throne, exactly like the one that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj occupied in the fort. The background of the pandal is said to be inspired by the main entrance of the fort, called the Nagarkhana.

Like every year, devotees will have two Darshan options. These include: The Mukh Darshan queue - whereby you can take Bappa's Darshan and blessings from a little far away (this queue usually takes 15-30 mins). The other queue - 'Navsachi Rang' (known as the queue for devotees who want to fulfil their vows) - usually takes around 9-10 hours and can even stretch to 18 hours on a crowded day (especially weekends). Devotees taking Darshan via Navsachi rang get 'charan sparsh' and Darshan on the main podium. This year, the Mukh Darshan and Navasachi Rang begins with an aarti at 4am on 19 September 2023. Darshan will remain open round-the-clock till visarjan day, which falls on 28 September 2023.

Planning your travel to Lalbaug

Train: Board the train to Chinchpokli or Byculla station. For western line, you can board the train and get down at Lower Parel (walking distance 7-10 mins). The Mukh Darshan queue can be approached from B.R Ambedkar road. The landmark for Lalbaug cha Raja would be Lalbaug Market.

Road: Several BEST buses ply from all over the city. Since a chunk of the road (starting from Ganesh Gully) is usually closed during all 10 days of the festivals, you can get down at 'Bharatmata Cinema' bus stop and walk all the way till Lalbaug Market. Meanwhile, you can also visit other famous mandals such as 'Mumbai cha Raja', 'Tejukaya mansion' among others on the way. Try and opt for public transport, as parking is not easily available during the festival. If you are traveling by your own vehicle, some of the parking options available include: Kalpataru Pay and Park at S.S Rao Road (near Gandhi Hospital, Parel) with a capacity of 200 cars. M.C.G.M Pay and Park (Lodha) at G.D Ambedkar Road (at Kalachowky) with a capacity of 500 cars. Cottongreen Pay and Park (B.P.T near Cottongreen Railway station) in Kalachowky area, with a capacity of 5000 cars and the M.C.G.M Pay and Park (Peninsula Land) at the Dr. B.A Road near Bawala Compound, Byculla (east), with a capacity of 500 cars. You will then have to walk 10-15 mins towards the main pandal area.

Shah Rukh Khan and the Return of the 'Angry Young Man' | Jawan

You know what's the power of a good film? The fact that it feels like a festival at the cinemas, and not just any other film that the audience is out to watch on the bring screen (only to bring out their phones and play candy crush in the middle of a crucial scene). Nope, you won't get to see such things around you, because that very person is most likely to break into a dance when 'Zinda Banda' plays. Well, that's Jawan for you. Good ol' entertainment with full-on mass vibes!

And if the record breaking collections (so far) are anything to go by, the film is steadily turning out to be one of 2023's biggest blockbusters. Well, as cinegoers, some of you may have seen the film already. And if not, you ideally don’t need any reason to go watch #Jawan (because YOU MUST). But, if you are someone who isn't too sure or has contemplated booking their tickets, here are 5 reasons why you must go out there and watch Atlee's Bollywood directorial debut:

The magic of SRK

Nobody does it like ‘King Khan’. Period! Shah Rukh Khan puts his heart & soul in a character, and his charm is unmatched. But with #Jawan - be prepared to expect the unexpected. There is a reason why he truly is the ‘last of the superstars’. Jawan feels like a festival at the cinemas, and SRK is THE GOD! You gotta see it to believe it.

Atlee's vision

Needless to say, director Atlee is a genius! Personally, I have loved his work - especially films like Theri, Mersal (and I've always admired how he styled his lead characters, and envisioned a manner in which the film would be presented), and I wholeheartedly appreciate his craft. True to his promise, Jawan is a complete package of pure entertainment, with high octane stylised action and whistle worthy moments. Moreover, the film highlights important social issues and delivers a very strong message - with key moments that tug your heart. Full props to ‘captain’ Atlee for delivering this powerful MASS film!

Plot twists galore

If you are thinking of taking a popcorn break in between the film, drop the idea! You will be hooked (so be prepared and get your stock or popcorn in advance). Jawan is a larger than life film that keeps you on the edge of your seat, all the way till the end credits. With terrific plot twists, surprise elements & thrills (and not to miss - SRK’s cool looks that keep on giving); be prepared for an exciting ride!

Girl power

The Women of Jawan take things a notch higher. Boss Lady Nayanthara steals the show. Her portrayal of ‘Narmada’ is powerful and packs a punch. That swag is just something else. Also, her chemistry with SRK is just so refreshing and lovely! Chief’s army including Sanya Malhotra, Priya Mani, Girija Oak Joshi & co were simply fab. Their backstory is crucial, and will leave you feeling numb. Ridhi Dogra too delivers in a small, but pivotal role. Of course, this appreciation is incomplete without the mention of Deepika Padukone’s impactful cameo. And clearly, nobody does it like her. Roughly 20 mins of screen time and yet, she leaves a mark with her impeccable performance! Plus, some good ol' Padukone-Khan chemistry. At its core, Jawan also celebrates Women and their unstoppable will to fight against all odds.

Behind the scenes

The technical aspects of the film are something to watch out for as well.

Anirudh Ravichander's Bollywood debut is impressive. The man, who recently delivered the chartbuster 'Jailer' soundtrack, has delivered yet again with a powerful album. Songs like Zinda Banda, Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya make you wanna get up and Dance (for real), while Chaleya is so dreamy and beautiful! Plus, the choreography is a big hit, with hook steps becoming popular among dance enthusiasts and fans. I quite liked the hook steps and overall presentation of these songs. My favourite has got to be #NotRamaiyaVastavaiya on the big screen (won’t share spoilers, but stay back during end credits. Vikram Rathore NAILS it). Anirudh's BGM creates a strong impact - especially with all those smashing SRK entries. G.K Vishnu's cinematography is a visual treat! Ruben's editing is crisp and sharp. This one’s a complete team effort!!
Well, I guess those reasons are enough for you to go out there and enjoy this larger than life film on the big screen. This is Shah Rukh Khan's revival of Bollywood's good ol’ Angry Young Man, in his own unique, impressive style. Something that will be remembered for a long, long time!

And, if these reasons aren’t enough - go watch it for SRK as #VikramRathore. Period!

PS: While I talk about the strengths, I must add - Vijay Sethupathi as Kaali has a strong screen presence and performs well (my only concern was that his character could've been sketched out in a better way. There was a lot of potential).

Rare Beauty arrives in India | Top 5 makeup picks

After years of patiently creating lists to traveling and picking up several products, asking friends and family to check on new arrivals and more; the wait is over. Rare Beauty - the much celebrated vegan and cruelty free makeup brand by Selena Gomez - has finally launched in India. I went on a crazy shopping spree at Sephora during my trip to Thailand earlier this year, and stocked up on several Rare Beauty must haves (and items that were on my shopping list since long). Bestsellers are known to go off the shelves within minutes of launch, but I was lucky to find a few of the last pieces - especially the liquid blush and highlighter.

I created a look featuring full face of Rare Beauty products (for that minimal no-makeup makeup look) and decided to share my favourite picks from the products that I got.

During my recent trip to Thailand, one skincare brand that I was quite excited to try and get my hands on was Banila Co. Yes, the Korean beauty brand that was founded in 2006, and is well known for it's hot seller - the Clean it zero cleansing balm (original), which is now available in a host of variants.

So, we shopped for quite a few products (and I will be doing a review of their 'Clean It Zero Purifying Cleansing balm' soon). We also got a few samples and goodies to try, which was a huge plus - as we could sample their products during the stay, and then - decided to go back and buy some more products for our family and friends. Needless to say, their cleansing balm was a hit. But, we also tried some of their other amazing skincare products and were quite impress.
