No matter what style my hair is in, I'm not much of a gel user when it comes to my edges. This product in particular is not marketed as a gel, but more of a hydrating style pomade made exclusively for your hairline edges. When I received this product to review, I must say that I was clueless as to how my unruly hairline edges would react.

I used this product around my front hairline consistently for a period of 3 weeks and saw positive results in regards to control, shine, moisture, and softness. The product applies very easily to your edges and tames the random flyaways while providing sheen and definition. The product is light and didn't dry out my edges and make them hard like similar products I've used in the past. Also, the addition of Argan oil helps to ensure a non-sticky formula. I have almost used the entire 2.4 oz container because it's just that great!

Hair Smoothing Products That Could Release Formaldehyde

I was doing some research on osha.gov and came across the following information on the website...

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and several State OSHA programs are investigating questions and complaints from hair salon owners and workers about possible formaldehyde exposure from hair smoothing products. Some of these products have been labeled as "formaldehyde-free."

During Federal OSHA investigations, air tests showed formaldehyde at levels above OSHA's limits in salons using Brazilian Blowout Acai Professional Smoothing Solution, labeled "formaldehyde free," and Brasil Cacau Cadiveu.

The first reports about formaldehyde in hair smoothing products surfaced when Oregon OSHA investigated a complaint from a hair stylist who had nosebleeds, eye irritation, and trouble breathing while using a Brazilian Blowout product labeled "formaldehyde-free." After testing the product, Oregon OSHA found that the product contained formaldehyde, a chemical that can cause the health problems reported by the stylist.

Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling gas that presents a health hazard if workers are exposed. You can be exposed to formaldehyde if you breathe it into your lungs, if it gets into your eyes, or if it is contained in a product that gets onto your skin. You can also be exposed accidentally if you touch your face, eat food, or drink after using a product containing formaldehyde without first washing your hands. It can irritate the eyes and nose, and cause coughing and wheezing. Formaldehyde is a "sensitizer," which means that it can cause allergic reactions of the skin, eyes, and lungs such as asthma-like breathing problems and skin rashes and itching. It's also a cancer hazard.

Read the product label and MSDS to determine if they list methylene glycol or any of the other names for formaldehyde listed above (like formaldehyde, formalin, or methylene glycol). If they do, the product can expose you to formaldehyde. The best way to control exposure to formaldehyde is to use products that do NOT list formaldehyde, formalin, methylene glycol, or any of the other names for formaldehyde listed above on the label or in the MSDS. Beauty care companies are now making and selling products that they claim do not contain formaldehyde in the solution. Choosing one of these products might eliminate the risk of formaldehyde exposure. Note that just because a product doesn't list formaldehyde, formalin, or methylene glycol does not mean that it does not contain any other hazardous ingredients.

Hair Length Reference Chart

I'm currently a quarter of an inch beyond shoulder length. I realized that this year's setback occurred as a result of me over-trimming my hair in an effort to keep it healthy. Coming to this realization has helped me to ditch the trimming for now. Now don't get me wrong, I understand the importance of trimming your ends to get rid of splits and dead weight. However, my ends are healthy and don't need constant trimming. So from now on, I will trim my ends on a need-basis. Otherwise, I plan to trim every relaxer, which is about 3 - 4 times a year. I know now that this is the part of my regimen that I needed to tweak. Maintaining progress is vital when you're on a hair care journey.

I swear I felt the ground shake the first time I heard this song. It ripped my heart out to hear Olivia say that she feels like no one believes in her (on VH1's "Love and Hip Hip"). It's a shame that our "mainstream" music industry allows talent like this go to waste. Thankfully, she's still working hard and released this single called "December." My thoughts on this product:

After moisturizing my hair as step 1, I've been using a dime-sized amount of the Hawaiian Silky Argan Oil to seal my ends. This oil has a very light consistency, as it does NOT weigh my hair down. It immediately penetrated into my hair to lock in the hydration from my moisturizer. The added benefit is that it adds additional moisturizing properties which is not commonly found in oils, other than coconut oil.

I have also used this Argan oil by adding a quarter size amount to deep condition my hair (after shampooing). Once I applied this oil to my hair, I covered it with a plastic cap & added my heat cap for about 20 minutes. After rinsing my hair, I allowed my hair to air dry. My hair was noticeably softer and produced a nice shine. My hair was easily detangled thus making it easier to manage once it air-dried. I also noticed that my hair still felt hydrated and there was no need for me to add additional moisturizers, because the Argan oil did the job! Also, it left my hair smelling so nice!

Stretching my Relaxer for Extra Hair Growth

See the image on the left? It represents my ultimate length goal. My hair was almost @ MBL (mid-back length) in the past, before it was cut to the level it is now. So I know that I can get it back with a little patience.

Even though I am on a journey to "ultimately" grow my hair to MBL, my goal for now is to grow it past shoulder length by January 2012. I have about 3 months left to reach this milestone. I've come to the realization that I've been over-trimming my hair this year in an effort to keep it healthy. I had too much of my progress cut off already. I will no longer have my hair trimmed until AFTER I relax it which is usually 3 - 4 times a year.

Research shows that hair grows at about half an inch per month. I'm currently at SL (shoulder-length) now and i have 2/3 more inches until my hair reaches past SL. Sometimes I get a little impatient and constantly do length checks & new growth evaluations. However, patience truly is a virtue. In the meantime, I've been "stretching" my relaxer and utilizing protective styles to ensure that my ends retain length.

I will NOT be doing another relaxer until January 2012 which will also be my next length check to see if I hit the growth milestone that I planned. We'll see how it goes because sometimes long relaxer stretches are difficult when you're trying to manage two different textures of hair. I'm going to do anything I can to ensure that everything goes well until the next relaxer in January 2012. At that time, I will also post new progress pictures of my length.

During my current relaxer stretch, I also plan on utilizing my hair growth products. I will alternate weekly with the use of: equal parts cayenne pepper & grapeseed oil for scalp to stimulate circulation and growth. Then the next week I will use the Vitale Olive Oil 4-in-1 Growth Serum. I will continue to take my vitamin supplements like Omega 3, MSM, B-Complex, Vitamin C, and etc.

My thoughts on this product:
My hair is tex-laxed. What this means is that I relax my hair, but I only leave the perm in for a few minutes to loosen my natural curl pattern. Therefore, I am still able to wet and scrunch my hair and get a curly effect. Even though the Elentee Soy Organics Twist & Lock Gel targets naturals or people with braids and weaves, I was able to use it and still reap the benefits on my type of hair.

Looking at the list of ingredients, this gel does contains some components that ensure moisture retention such as: Water, Glycerin, Aloe Vera, and Olive Oil.

I wet my hair first and then applied a quarter size amount to the front, and a quarter size amount to the back. Then I scrunched my hair in sections with the gel until I was satisfied with the curl definition. Then, I allowed my hair to air dry. My hair air dried with a high-definition of curls. My hair still felt soft and my curls were well-defined with a nice shine. My new growth also was soft and defined as a result of applying this gel to my roots. Everyone's new growth is natural so for me, I found that this gel actually softened my roots and made it easier to detangle them. So I'm guessing that the natural ladies will be as pleased with this gel as I am.

My thoughts on this product...

Since my hair is relaxed (tex-laxed), I wrap my hair often to protect it @ night. Kiehl's Creme with Silk Groom (Stylist Series)

Although I'm not too crazy about the aroma, this holding creme by Kiehl's does exactly what it says it will do, with regard to the amazing shine and hold that it provides.

I tex-laxed my hair back in December 2010 after nearly a year long "stretch" (means post-poning relaxer to enhance growth/thickness). Since doing so, I've been utilizing lots of protective styles to retain my length and keep hair growing even longer.

Since I'm NOT a big fan of hair gel, I've been looking for something to hold my hair in place to eliminate flyaways -- without making my hair too dry, greasy, heavy, or stiff. When I received a sample of Kiehl's Creme with Silk Groom, I was ready to give it a go. The morning I used it, I applied it to my hair and then brushed it back into a ponytail, then finalized the style with a bun. The directions advise to apply to damp hair -- however, my hair wasn't damp and still reaped the benefits of this creme.

Not only, did I notice immediate shine, but my hair was like silk and I didn't have to slick my hair back too much because the creme did that for me. All day long, my hair had this sort of luster and shine that didn't fade, as it does with traditional hair gel. So I recommend this product for hold and protective styling. It does have "protein" in it so be mindful of this, if your hair is protein sensitive. The one thing I would change about this product is the Parabens in the ingredients. Parabens are harmful to health if used too much overtime (google it). Otherwise, this product produces great styling results!

Kimble Silk Treatment Hair Conditioner

When researching hair products, the first thing I check is the ingredients. The main reason I tried this conditioner is because it has "silk amino acids" already mixed in the ingredients! Silk amino acids are really good for enhancing shine and treating the appearance of the hair cuticle. After I shampooed my hair, I deep conditioned for 30 mins with a moisturizing treatment & rinsed.

Then I applied this Kimble Silk Treatment Hair Conditoner and used my heat cap to deep condition again for 45 mins. After I rinsed my hair and applied my leave-in conditioner, I blow dried my hair on a cool setting and could not believe how "silky" and "shiny" my hair was. Plus my hair had some "slip" to it. That simply means the hair glides. The next day, ppl I knew were asking me what I've been using to make my hair so shiny and healthy. And this is just after one use! I'm really impressed. I'm going to add this one into my haircare regimen. This product also works to infuse moisture into dry, especially coarse hair.

The Dreaded Nape: Pt. II

If you read part I of "the dreaded nape," you know that I considered my nape a problem area and have been focusing on growing it long, with the rest of my hair.

In part I, I blogged about how my nape was shaven for a short-term hair-style that I later regretted. No matter what I did, it seemed like it would take forever for hair in my nape area to thicken up and grow.

Now, I am in absoulute awe and overflowing with smiles because I went from a tapered nape area to what you can now see in the photo on the left. I clipped my hair up to let you see the amazing growth results I received in my kitchen/nape area. You can see the difference in growth by looking at my previous post: the Dreaded Nape (Pt. I).

What I've been doing to my nape area is parting it nightly with a rattail comb and applying Wild Growth Oil to the scalp of my nape. The next night, I do the same routine except I apply the Jamaican Red Pimento Oil to my nape. So, I alternate nightly between those two oils and then I massage my nape for about 2 minutes to give that area circulation. Most importantly, at night I wrap my hair (nape included) in a satin scarf to prevent breakage. I must say that this method has really paid off so far but I'm still working on it.

Willow Smith did her 1st performance on the Ellen Degeneres show on Novemer 2nd, 2010. I'm really proud of her because lil mama is only like 10 years old and she rocked the show. She's a great entertainer and really gave a great performance. Plus she has a powerful voice for her age. Not only that, she looks her age and is NOT over-done with makeup and sleezy clothing...so her talent really shines through. The song is fun and age-appropriate, but even someone in their 20s like me can still get into it. The message in her song is to flip off negative ppl with your hair & to never let them make you lose your focus. Ladies, when they try, whip it real hard...your hair that is (LOL!).

I recently purchased a 4oz. bottle of this product because I stopped using the regular Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I love the benefits of JBCO, but hate how it's sooo sticky, thick, and weighs my hair down.

I was thinking about ways I could obtain the benefits of the JBCO without using it again. Thankfully, I came across this Red Pimento growth oil on the internet. It happens to include the JBCO, but also includes Pimento which is a traditional Jamaican spice that stimulates scalp circulation & hair growth.

When I tried this product for the first time, I noticed that it is a very light oil, which scored major points in my hair diary. Also, is seems to absorb quickly and doesn't weigh my hair down. It does have somewhat of a medicinal scent, but I'm okay with that because it's tolerable and light. Since this is a light oil, I have been using it on my scalp and doing scalp massages with it. I only put a few drops on my my ends to seal after I've moisturized.

So far I've been using this oil for about 3 weeks. I'm really falling in love with it. I will keep a close eye on how much it thickens my hair and weather or not I see more hair growth. I can say that I've noticed about 1/4 an inch of growth in the time I've been using it. Kudos to this oil!

Roux 619 Treatment & Shine

One night I was up very late researching hair treatments that are good for moisturization. Ethnic hair craves moisture and if our hair is not properly balanced between moisture and protein, it will surely dry out and break. Since I am obsessed with "healthy" hair, I do whatever it takes to avoid unecessary breakage.

With that said, in doing some reseach I found this Roux treatment product. I purchased this from Sally's for about $7.50. The Roux hair care line targets healthy hair and provides relevant treatments. I've been using the Roux 619 treatment and shine as a leave-in on every wash day (after I've shampooed/deep conditioned). I also have been using it to spritz my hair daily when it seems to need a little extra moisture. I'm not too crazy about the smell but it does it's job in softening, moisturizing, and balancing my hair. It also gives hair a healthy appearance because it smooths the cuticle while treating dryness. Love that.

So I received a sample of this conditioner and had it sitting around for a few weeks, and have been itching to give it a go.

Although they're a little pricey, I have always heard good things about KIEHL'S hair products.

This particular conditioner has added Coconut Oil and smells so much like it, I almost drank it. LOL! The Coconut oil is great because it's an oil that penetrates the hair strand. The consistency if this conditioner is thick and creamy, so when I applied this to my slightly damp, shampooed hair, I noticed that I didn't have to use very much because a little goes a long way. This is very good since an 8 oz bottle can cost you about $20.00 (depending on where it's purchased).

I used this as a moisturizing deep conditioner after I shampooed. I left the KIEHL'S in my hair with a plastic cap on for about 1 hr. Once I cold-rinsed, my hair was noticably softer. I always air dry my hair now and when my hair had dryed it did NOT feel weighed down or crunchy. LOL! It felt soft, moisturized, and my fingers glided right through my ends. I'm guessing this product gives hair a little slip too! I'm going to purchase a bottle of this stuff. Hopefully Sephora has it.

Nobody loves a beautiful head full of color-treated hair, more than me. However, because my hair has already been chemically treated via relaxer, I'm very careful about using additional chemicals on my hair.

In my opinion, Jet Black hair always looks the healthiest and for some reason it brings out the undertones of my skin color. I love it! Via semi-permanent hair color provides me the benefits of changing my natural hair color without having to utillize harsh chemicals on my already relaxed hair. Because this product is not permanent, it will gradually wash out of your hair. I'm okay with that though, because I can always reapply it.

These hair rinses come in a wide array of various colors and the depth of color in your hair depends on your hair's porosity level (ability to absorb moisture).

This product does not contain alcohol, peroxide, or ammonia. It's very safe for chemically-treated hair because it does contain: Aloe vera, Panthenol, Vitamin E, and C&A UV proteins. You can use this product the same day that you relax your hair! To use: you shampoo your hair and then apply it, leave on for 25 minutes, and shampoo out...then condition. It retails in my local BSS for about $2.50 + applicable taxes. How economical is that?!?
