(00:03:46) To discuss the recent return of the two misisng episodes from “The Daleks Master Plan”, Tim Burrows returns to us after his guest appearances on podcasts 173 and 189. Tim’s expertise is usually on his The Missing Episodes Podcast.

(00:25:04) Those of you familiar with Doc’s and Mark’s obsession with BBC 1970s drama series “Secret Army” may know that it was one of three similar drama series of the time. The first of these was “Colditz” screened between 1972 and 1974. The series deals with Allied prisoners of war imprisoned at the supposedly escape-proof Colditz Castle during World War II, and their many attempts to escape captivity.

(00:53:58) “Face the Music” is a British panel game show revolving around classical music which originally aired on the BBC from 1966 to 1979 and then 1983 to 1984 with Joseph Cooper hosting the entire run. During its most popular period, the programme had a weekly audience of over 4 million.

(00:57:00) “Arena” is a British television documentary series, made and broadcast by the BBC since 1975. Voted by TV executives in Broadcast magazine as one of the top 50 most influential programmes of all time, it has produced more than six hundred episodes. The arts strand Arena was initially created in 1975 by the BBC Head of Music & Arts at that time, Humphrey Burton, when he founded a magazine named Arena exploring art, design, filmmaking, and theatre. In 1977, under producer and director Leslie Megahey, the strand divided into Arena Theatre and Arena Art and Design, and Arena became less of a magazine and more a home for short, distinctive and stylish films about mainly British theatre and visual arts. In 1978, Megahey became editor of Omnibus and Alan Yentob, who had been supervising Arena Theatre, took over and the two themes were merged. The series, relaunched in January 1979 and renamed simply Arena, began to adopt a format of single subject essays. It earned great critical acclaim for its enthusiasm for the popular as well as the high arts. During Yentob’s time as editor, Arena had six BAFTA nominations and three BAFTA awards.

“The Ken Campbell Roadshow” was founded by Ken Campbell, (1941 – 2008), an English actor, director and writer known for his work in experimental theatre. In 1969, he was inspired to found “The Ken Campbell Roadshow”, a small theatre group that performed in unconventional venues such as pubs. Members included Bob Hoskins, Bernard Wrigley, Jane Wood, Dave Hill and Sylvester McCoy. Campbell was invited by John Cleese to appear with his Roadshow team in the first Secret Policeman’s Ball in June 1979.

(01:49:54) “The Masterspy” is a game show that tapped into the popular James Bond spy genre and ran on ITV for four seasons from 1977 to 1980. Presenter William Franklyn posed as the head of a top secret spy organisation alongside Jenny Lee-Wright as his faithful secretary Miss Moneypacker. Three contestants pose as spys, completing a series of challenges. These ranged from simple memory games to displaying expert knowledge on certain types of hand guns to practical tests such as freeing a trapped agent or showing off their shooting skills.

(00:20:04) “Richer Sounds” is a British home entertainment retailer that operates through a chain of 51 stores and online. In November 2013, Julian Richer announced to the press that, upon his death, he would bequeath 100% of the firm to a trust co-owned by employees of the company. In May 2019, Richer, then aged 60, announced that he had transferred ownership to employees by passing 60% of his shares to a trust, as well as separately paying each of his over 500 employees, excluding directors, a thank you bonus of £1,000 for every year of work, a total of about £4 million, as the employees had worked for an average of 8 years each. “Viz” meanwhile is a British adult comic magazine founded in 1979. It parodies British comics of the post-war period, notably The Beano and The Dandy, but with extensive profanity, toilet humour, black comedy, surreal humour and generally sexual or violent storylines. The connection between the two, according to Mark and The Rev, is that Richer Sounds used to sponsor the “Viz” music charts where indie bands used to bribe “Viz” and their position in the charts would be determined by the level of the bribe.

(00:19:48) “3-2-1” was a British game show that made by Yorkshire Television for ITV. It ran for ten years, from 29 July 1978 to 24 December 1988, with Ted Rogers as the host. The show was a huge success, consistently pulling in large ratings. The first series, though intended as a summer filler, attracted up to 16.5 million viewers and subsequent years never peaked below 12 million. The show occupied a Saturday early evening slot for most of its run. The overall objective of the game was to survive elimination through to part three of the show, and try to unravel a series of cryptic clues in order to win the star prize. However, one of the clues referred to “Dusty Bin,” the show’s booby prize; any contestants who wound up with Dusty at the end of the show received only a new dustbin. Each show had a theme, such as “Seacruise” or the “Swinging Sixties”. All of the variety acts, quiz questions, stage sets and clues to prizes subsequently followed this theme. The clues became notorious for being almost impossibly difficult and obscure, having only a remote connection to the prizes, which contestants sometimes did not appear to grasp even after Ted had revealed it to them. It has often been suggested that the clues had more than one possible explanation, allowing the producers to control which prize the contestants received.

(00:36:23) Simon Groom was a presenter of BBC TV children’s programme “Blue Peter” from 1978 to 1986. Groom became known among the programme’s production team for his dry humour and ability to ad lib innuendo in his broadcasting (which would pass over the heads of the programme’s main audience of children). One such statement was at the end of a piece on a replacement door knocker at Durham Cathedral, declaring “what a beautiful pair of knockers”. Another remark followed a piece about hedge maintenance, in which he closed with the remark, “As long as you have a decent length to start with, well then you can manage a good lay”, much to the irritation of producer Biddy Baxter.

(00:02:01) “The World of Tim Burton” is a major exhibition of his design aesthetic. While most well-known for his cinematic work, this show displays the full extent of his production as an illustrator, painter, photographer and author, as well as exploring key collaborations with designers. As a multi-disciplinary artist, his creations extend beyond the limits of mediums and formats. Drawn from Tim Burton’s personal archive and representing the artist’s creative output from childhood to the present day, this collection of drawings, paintings, photographs, sketchbooks, moving-image works, sculptural installations, set and costume design focuses on the recurrent visual themes and motifs found in the distinctive characters and worlds found in Burton’s art and films. This is the final stop in a decade-long world tour for this exhibition and will be its only ever showing in the UK.

(00:04:02) “ABBA Voyage” is a virtual concert residency by the Swedish pop group ABBA. The concerts feature virtual avatars (dubbed “ABBAtars”), depicting the group as they appeared in 1979, and use vocals re-recorded by the group in a Swedish studio specifically for this show, accompanied by a 10 piece live instrumental band on stage. The concerts are held in ABBA Arena, a purpose-built venue in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.

(00:20:38) “Big Boys” is a British television sitcom created and written by Jack Rooke, first broadcast on Channel 4. It stars Dylan Llewellyn and Jon Pointing as first-year university students who live together, set from 2013, told from the point of view of Llewellyn’s character Jack—a semi-fictionalised version of Rooke, who narrates the series—as he recovers from his father’s death and explores his sexuality for the first time.

(01:03:39) “Mind Your Language” is a British sitcom that premiered on ITV in 1977. It was produced by London Weekend Television and directed by Stuart Allen. Three series were made by London Weekend Television between 1977 and 1979, and it was briefly revived in 1985 (or 1986 in most ITV regions) with six of the original cast members. The series shows people of different countries with different social background, religions, and languages existing in the same classroom, learning English as a foreign language.

(01:11:20) “Porridge” is a British sitcom, starring Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale, written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, and broadcast on BBC1 from 1974 to 1977. The programme ran for three series and two Christmas specials. A feature film of the same name based on the series was released in 1979. The sitcom focuses on two prison inmates, Norman Fletcher (played by Barker) and Lennie Godber (played by Beckinsale), who are serving time at the fictional HMP Slade in Cumberland. The show’s title is a 1950s British slang term for a prison sentence, derived from the traditional breakfast that used to be served in British prisons.

(00:05:59) St Fagans National Museum of History commonly referred to as St Fagans after the village where it is located, is an open-air museum in Cardiff chronicling the historical lifestyle, culture, and architecture of the Welsh people. The museum is part of the wider network of Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales. It consists of more than forty re-erected buildings from various locations in Wales, and is set in the grounds of St Fagans Castle, a Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house. In 2011 Which? magazine named the museum the United Kingdom’s favourite visitor attraction. A six-year, £30-million revamp was completed in 2018 and the museum was named the Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2019.

(00:12:55) This is the 1985 TV commerical for the 5-4-3-2-1 chocolate bar. As the name of the bar suggests, it consisted of five different parts; wafer, crispy rice, caramel, fondant, and milk chocolate. It was made by Crawford’s (who also made Bandit) at their Binns Road factory in Liverpool. The brand was sold to United Biscuits in 1960. Sadly, it was discontinued in 1989 due to poor sales.

(00:39:16) Rosa Lewis (1867–1952) was an English cook and owner of The Cavendish Hotel in London, located at the intersection of Jermyn Street and Duke Street, St. James. Known as the “Queen of Cooks”, her culinary skills were highly prized by Edward VII, with whom she was rumoured to have had an affair in the 1890s. She was also called “The Duchess of Jermyn Street.” She left school at 12 to go into domestic service, working her way up to cook. She claimed that the great chef Auguste Escoffier taught her about cooking. It was he who named her the “Queen of Cooks”. One of her employers was Lady Randolph Churchill. One day, Rosa chased Lady Randolph’s then ten-year-old, red-haired son Winston out of her kitchen, shouting “Hop it, copper knob.” The 1976-77 BBC television series, “The Duchess of Duke Street”, starring Gemma Jones, was loosely based on her life. It is said that some of the scenes in “Vile Bodies” by Evelyn Waugh, in which she appears as her fictional counterpart Lottie Crump, were also inspired by the Cavendish Hotel under Lewis’ management.

(00:53:36) “P.R.O.B.E.” is a series of direct-to-video science-fiction films mostly written by Mark Gatiss and produced by BBV Productions. It was the first live-action Doctor Who spin-off series. The series features Caroline John as Liz Shaw, working for the Preternatural Research Bureau. Many former Doctor Who actors, including former Doctors Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy, appear in the series playing different roles. (Due to licensing restrictions, no overt reference to The Doctor is permitted.) Doctor Who alumna Louise Jameson co-stars with Caroline John in the original four films, as Patricia Haggard.

(01:05:21) This rallying call for the BBC bolshies comes from the end of the opening credits music of “Citizen Smith”, a British television sitcom written by John Sullivan, first broadcast from 1977 to 1980. It starred Robert Lindsay as Walter Henry “Wolfie” Smith, a young Marxist “urban guerrilla” in Tooting, south London, who is attempting to emulate his hero Che Guevara. Wolfie is a reference to the Irish revolutionary Wolfe Tone, who used the pseudonym “Citizen Smith” in order to evade capture by the Dublin Castle administration. Wolfie is the self-proclaimed leader of the revolutionary Tooting Popular Front (the TPF, merely a small bunch of his friends), the goals of which are “Power to the People” and “Freedom for Tooting”.

(01:13:38) “Unman, Wittering and Zigo” is a 1958 radio play by the Anglo-Irish playwright Giles Cooper. A feature film version was released in 1971. The play is part of the curriculum for GCSE and Standard Grade English coursework in the United Kingdom and is frequently performed in public schools.

(00:01:09) The songs which top and tail this podcast are from a “Lady Penelope Investigates” LP produced by Century 21 Records in 1966 and acquired by Doc at a school Bring & Buy sale in the early 1970s. The LP cover can be seen on our Tumblr page here and the songs themselves can be found here.

(00:03:22) Breakaway was a brand of chocolate-covered digestive biscuit from Nestlé, which started production in 1970 in the United Kingdom, manufactured by Rowntree Mackintosh Confectionery. Nestlé acquired the brand in 1988. It was discontinued in February 2024 after 54 years due to falling sales.

(00:28:19) Of the several incarnations of “The Tomorrow People”, the one Mark is referring to here is the British children’s science fiction television series produced by Thames Television for the ITV Network, the series first ran from 1973 to 1979. All incarnations of the show concerned the emergence of the next stage of human evolution (Homo novis) known colloquially as Tomorrow People. Born to human parents, an apparently normal child might at some point between childhood and late adolescence experience a process called ‘breaking out’ and develop special paranormal abilities. These abilities include psionic powers such as telepathy, telekinesis, and teleportation. However, their psychological make-up prevents them from intentionally killing others. The theme music and opening credits were fabulous.

(00:43:30) “Captain Zep – Super Space Detective” s a British television children’s series produced by the BBC between 1983 and 1984. Constructed as part drama and part quiz game, “Captain Zep” featured mysteries that would be solved by the child audience in the studio, along with a write-in competition for viewers. The child audience were dressed in futuristic clothes and had gelled hair. The series was also notable for its combination of live action and animation, where the cast would interact with drawn alien characters amidst drawn backgrounds.

(00:47:50) “Whizzer and Chips” was a British comics magazine that ran from 1969 to 1990, when it merged with the comic “Buster”. The format of “Whizzer and Chips” presented the comic as being divided into two separate parts — a novel idea at the time. One part was called Whizzer and the other was called Chips, with Chips existing as a separate pull-out section in the middle. The slogan “Two comics in one, double the fun!” was used.

It involved its contestants seeing clips from films, and then being asked questions about the films to test their memories of them.

(00:36:25) “Chorlton and the Wheelies” is an animated children’s television series created by Cosgrove Hall Productions which ran from 1976 until 1978 on ITV. 40 episodes were produced. The show followed the adventures of Chorlton, an anthropomorphic “happiness dragon”, in “Wheelie World” (where people moved on wheels instead of legs). The eponymous lead character gets his name from the suburb of Manchester in which the Cosgrove Hall studio was based.

(00:36:59) Brian Keith “Herbie” Flowers (19 May 1938 – 5 September 2024) was an English musician specialising in bass guitar, double bass and tuba. He was a member of groups including Blue Mink, T. Rex and Sky and was also a prolific session musician. Flowers contributed to recordings by Elton John, Camel, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Roy Harper, David Essex, Al Kooper, Bryan Ferry, Harry Nilsson, Cat Stevens, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. He also played bass on “Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds”.

(00:39:05) “The Water Margin” is a Japanese television series based on the 14th-century book Water Margin, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. Made in two seasons of 13 episodes each by Nippon Television it was shown in Japan in 1973 and 1974 as “Suikoden”. For an English-language version, it was adapted by David Weir without translations, using only brief plot synopses. The dubbed version, narrated by Burt Kwouk, was shown by the BBC from 1976 to 1978.

(01:18:18) “Shardlake” is a series of historical mystery novels by C. J. Sansom, set in 16th century Tudor England. The series features barrister Matthew Shardlake, who, while navigating the religious reforms of Henry VIII, solves crime and tries to avoid getting caught up in political intrigue. The first six books are set during the reign of Henry VIII, while the seventh, Tombland, takes place two years after the king’s demise. Sansom said before his death that he planned to write further Shardlake novels taking the lawyer into the reign of Elizabeth I.

As the show’s first story editor, he helped to establish the compelling blend of adventure, imagination and quirky humour that made – and continues to make – the series a hit. David commissioned the first Dalek story, and fought for it to be made when his bosses didn’t like it. Regeneration, the TARDIS being alive, the idea of Doctor Who expanding to become a multimedia phenomenon in comics, books and films… David Whitaker was all over it. Yet very little was known about this key figure in Doctor Who history – until now. Why did he fall out with Irving Berlin? Was he really engaged to Yootha Joyce? And how did an assignment to Moscow badly affect his career? The book can be bought here.

Doc’s wealth of information did indeed come entirely from Simon Guerrier‘s article “Mission to Moscow” which appeared in the BBC magazine “The Essential Doctor Who – Adventures in Space” (2017) and which Doc did indeed come upon while recently researching for our review of “Ambassadors of Death” for podcast 189. (00:37:35) Richard Lewis Hearne (1908 – 1979) was a British actor, comedian, producer and writer. He is best remembered for his stage and television character Mr Pastry. He was interviewed for the role of the Fourth Doctor after the departure of Jon Pertwee, but a disagreement over his interpretation of the role (he wanted to play the Doctor as Mr Pastry) led to no offer being made by the producer, Barry Letts. The role was subsequently offered to Tom Baker. In 1976, Richard Hearne appeared as Mr Pastry on the BBC’s old time music hall show, “The Good Old Days”.

(00:47:37) Arthur Atkinson was a fictional character from the BBC’s sketch comedy “The Fast Show”, played by Paul Whitehouse. He had a terrible singing voice and was made to mime to someone else’s material. Later, he would be cast in his own sitcom (Blame Arthur!) and would cameo in the 70’s sex comedy Confessions of a Door to Door Cucumber Salesman. He can be seen on Youtube here.

However, Barrett turned out to be an alias and the existence of the episode a hoax. In a mini-documentary titled “Missing in Action” (aired during a 1993 BBC One repeat of Planet of the Daleks), Levine said that he experienced “the absolute utter depths of despair when we found out that it was just a blank tape and it was all a hoax”, expressing his desire to get hold of Barrett and “choke him until I found out why he misled everybody.” Unfortunately, hoaxes of this kind are not uncommon in Doctor Who fandom, with people like Barrett more than willing to exploit the hope that copies of the missing episodes may still exist somewhere waiting to be recovered.” The Missing in Action documentary can be seen here and the Roger K. It was written and presented by Polish-British mathematician and historian of science, Jacob Bronowski. Intended as a series of “personal view” documentaries in the manner of Kenneth Clark’s 1969 series “Civilisation“, the series received acclaim for Bronowski’s highly informed but eloquently simple analysis, his long, elegant monologues, and its extensive location shoots. Dr Bronowski’s vile and offensive remarks about the Manchester weather is the final ssene of episode 4 (“The Hidden Structure”).

(00:57:33) “Brass” is a British television comedy drama, made by Granada Television for ITV and eventually Channel 4. “Brass” is northern English slang for “money” as well as for “effrontery”. The series was set primarily in Utterley, a fictional Lancashire mining town in the 1930s, Brass satirized working-class period dramas of the 1970s, most significantly “When the Boat Comes In“. Unusually for ITV comedies of the time.

(originally Wdyjsoytsagadslbi?: Why don’t you just switch off your television set and go and do something less boring instead?) was a BBC children’s television series broadcast in 42 series between 20 August 1973 and 21 April 1995. It was originally broadcast in the morning during the school summer holidays. The format consisted of groups or “gangs” of children responding to letters from viewers who wrote into the show suggesting games, ‘makes’ and days out. Typically these were arts-and-crafts activities or games and magic tricks children could learn to impress their friends. Russell T Davies was later at one time a producer and director for “Why Don’t You…?”. Under Davies’s direction, the format of the series shifted from magazine show to drama.

(00:02:13) In 1988 Bluebird Toys UK released ‘Doctor Who in the Domain of the Daleks’. This playset was the shape of a Dalek and when opened it became the Dalek Headquarters. It contained a TARDIS with doors opening outwards and inside you could see the console room, a silver Dalek (with a ball bearing in its base) the 4th Doctor and at the top the Emperor Dalek. You could push back the front of the Emperor Dalek’s dome to reveal Davros (as seen in ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’ 1988).

(00:11:20) “The Doctor Who Years^“ was a streaming video, charting the history of Doctor Who on BBCi’s official Doctor Who website, where it is no longer available for viewing. It was produced to coincide with the return of the series to BBC Television screens in 2005, and was intended to present a potted history of the original Doctor Who series, broadcast between 1963–1989, in a manner which would be entertaining to new viewers, unfamiliar with the original series. The video was presented in three parts, The Sixties, The Seventies and The Eighties and featured material from every Doctor Who serial, presented chronologically and accompanied by narrative text and pop music that had featured in the UK Singles Chart at the time the clips were originally broadcast.

(00:14:02) “Some Mothers Do Ave Em” was a BBC sitcom, created and written by Raymond Allen and starring Michael Crawford and Michele Dotrice. It was first broadcast in 1973 and ran for two series, including two Christmas specials in 1974 and 1975. After a three-year absence, the programme returned for a third series in 1978 and again in 2016 for a one-off special. The series regularly garnered 25 million viewers and was broadcast in 60 countries. The series follows the accident-prone Frank Spencer and his tolerant wife Betty through Frank’s various attempts to maintain a job, which frequently end in disaster. The sitcom was noted for its stunt work, performed by Crawford himself, and it featured several well-known and much-lampooned catchphrases that have become part of British popular culture. The famous roller skating scene (featuring Hayden’s dad’s best friend) can be seen here. (00:54:32) Mike Smash and Dave Nice are two fictional television characters who first appeared in the early 1990s TV sketch show Harry Enfield’s Television Programme. They were played by comedians Paul Whitehouse and Harry Enfield respectively. They are parodies of a certain style of ageing celebrity BBC Radio 1 disc jockey who started out with the station in the 1960s and stayed there until the mid-1990s. The characters incorporated the personalities, character traits and lifestyles of several different real-life DJs. The characters reference such DJs as Tony Blackburn, Dave Lee Travis, Simon Bates, Alan Freeman, Mike Read, Peter Powell, Noel Edmonds and Jimmy Savile amongst others. Any resemblance to what Hayden comes out with is purely coincidental.

(00:00:00) Dez Skinn is a British comic and magazine editor and author of a number of books on comics. As head of Marvel Comics’ operations in the UK in the late 1970s, Dez reformatted existing titles, launched new ones, and acquired the BBC license for “Doctor Who Weekly”. After leaving Marvel UK, Dez founded and edited “Warrior”, which featured key works by Alan Moore. Called by some the “British Stan Lee”, Dez is one of British comics’ most influential figures (it says here). Dez’s website can be found here.

“Vworp Vworp” is a fanzine celebrating Doctor Who in comic strip form, as well as Doctor Who artwork in general and the history of “Doctor Who Magazine”.

Cutaway Comics is a new British imprint of comics and graphic novels drawn from the darker recesses of a dangerous, unpredictable cutaway universe. From the creators of Vworp Vworp! Magazine, they star some of the most enigmatic characters to have graced our screens. Beginning with a four-issue limited series written by Eric Saward (Doctor Who) and featuring the mercenary Lytton (as portrayed by Gangster’s Maurice Colbourne), Cutaway Comics is also bringing you art from the UK’s hottest artists including Barry Renshaw (Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog). Cutaway Comics is inspired by the so-called ‘backup’ strips of Doctor Who Weekly, which delved deeper into the characters and cultures of the Doctor Who universe away from the Doctor. Stay tuned for some exciting and unprecedented explorations of the worlds of Doctor Who and beyond.

(00:35:55) “On the Move” is a British television series made by the BBC and first broadcast in 1975 and 1976 in 50 ten-minute episodes. On the surface a lightweight soap opera, it was in fact an educational programme aimed at adults with literacy problems, and linked to a national campaign at the time. Up to 17 million people watched the series, and it was credited with removing some of the stigma attached to illiteracy.

(00:16:47) “War of the Daleks” is a kind of sci-fi Space-Ludo with Dalek. The game involves moving card Dr Who figures around a circular playing area aiming to get to the “control center” whilst avoiding the Daleks. The Daleks themselves are faithful plastic renditions about three quarters of an inch tall, inserted into concentric slots cut into the board. When the pale blue “control centre” hub in the middle of the board is rotated, the card disc underpinning these concentric slots also rotate, causing the Daleks to move around the board and “capture” hapless players. If a player makes it to the central hub, they have a chance to destroy the control centre by lifting it up. Doing so reveals four panels one of which depicts the “King Dalek.” If he’s next to you he exterminates you and you start again!
