First published in 1996, Eat Right 4 Your Type: The Individualized Diet Solution to Staying Healthy, Living Longer & Achieving Your Ideal Weight was written by Peter J. D’Adamo, N.D. along with collaboration from Catherine Whitney. The basic premise of this diet is that what you should and should not eat is completely based on your blood type and that by following the program one can allow for the “restoration of your natural genetic rhythm.” The program claims that if one eats right for their type that they will lose weight, live longer, have less stress, improve mental clarity, improve digestion, have healthier joints, decrease allergies, and improve immunity to just name a few. One should note that because this diet bans entire foods and food groups depending on blood type it can be difficult for people to follow.

This book has spent time on the National Bestsellers List, but does that make it a good choice when choosing a diet plan? Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D. a dietician at the Mayo Clinic stated that “Some research suggests that people who have certain blood types may develop specific patterns of food allergies. However, there’s no scientific evidence to support the so-called ‘blood type diet,’ in which different diets are recommended based on a person’s blood type. At this time, eating or avoiding certain foods according to your blood type isn’t thought to have any favorable influence on weight or overall health. In fact, a ‘blood type diet’ may not meet your nutritional needs.” Hematologist Dr. Victor Herbert of New York’s Mt. Sinai Medical Center held very strong views on the idea of linking blood type and diet. He once called the link “pure horse manure. It has no relation to reality. The genes for blood type have nothing to do with the genes that handle the food we eat.”

The Dorm Room Diet, The Dorm Room Diet Workout, and The Dorm Room Diet Planner were written by Daphne Oz a Princeton University student, and daughter of Mehmet Oz, M.D. who is the author of such books as You: On a Diet, You: The Owner’s Manuel, and You: The Smart Patient.

The Dorm Room Diet is based on the 8-step program for creating a healthy lifestyle plan that really works. The 8 steps are as follows:

“Step 1 - Get Inspired”

“Step 2 - Get Informed: The Freshman 15”

“Step 3 - Get Started: Healthy Eating 101”

“Step 4 - Get a Grip: Where and How to Eat Responsibly at College”

“Step 5 - Get Prepared: The Five Danger Zones and How to Survive Them”

“Step 6 - Get Moving: The Exercise Factor”

“Step 7 - Get Your Vitamins: Everything You Need to Know About Supplements”

“Step 8 - Get Happy: A More Relaxed, More Effective You”

The book claims to provide young adults with an easy to follow approach to eating right and staying healthy while out on your own for the first time. The book provides tips on such things as how to stop emotional eating, how to choose vitamins and supplements, how to deal with stress, and how to exercise.

Even though Daphne herself is a vegetarian, she doesn’t ban meat from her diet plan. Daphne lost 10 pounds her first semester away at college by following this plan and is now down about 30 pounds while maintaining and not yo-yoing with her weight. Although this diet is for all young adults it does seem a little more tailored to the female population. It is often reviewed as a fun and easy to understand book. The information in the book is mostly things that we all already know and know to do but it is packaged together well and seems like a great diet program for young adults.

In 2002 LA Weight Loss was fined $100,000 due to making false claims.

In 2006, Washington State settled a complaint against LA Weight Loss for bait-and-switch tactics and false advertising.

In December of 2008 the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced that it had resolved the pattern or practice sex discrimination lawsuit concerning not hiring men against LA Weight Loss Centers, Inc., which had been renamed in 2007 to Pure Weight Loss, Inc., for $20 million and other significant relief.

The LA Weight Loss plan suggests a daily diet focusing on portion control which contains 50 to 55% carbohydrates, 25 to 30% protein and 20 to 25% fat. The program does not ban any foods instead if focuses on learning portion control. One of the core features of this diet program is the LA Lites which are soy based nutrition bars along with LA Weight Loss brand supplements, juices and snacks which are advertised as helping to reduce the hunger pangs normally felt when dieting.

Milton Stokes spokesman for the American Dietetic Association notes that the buyer should be wary of pushy counselors trying to sell their products. Stokes states that, “Anytime a company pushes products, a red flag goes up because there is no such thing as a magic pill or potion to help you lose weight. It is all about changing your lifestyle and behaviors, not about bars or supplements. There is very little clinical evidence that these supplements work.”

Many if not all LA Weight Loss and Pure Weight Loss centers have closed around the world and many of the clients have not received refunds for services and products that they paid for up front.

So, you decide is LA Weight Loss a scam or the real deal?

The Acai berry is the fruit of the Acai palm found in the Brazilian rainforest. The Acai berry looks something like a grape or blueberry only with a large seed inside. The Acai berry is an acquired taste that many describe as a mix of berries and chocolate.

The Acai berry is not a magic bullet that will melt off the pounds. However, adding quality Acai berry product to a healthy lifestyle might aid in losing weight. The most important aspect in a weight loss program is eating healthy whole foods and participating in moderate exercise, not the addition of Acai berry.

Athletes should focus the diet on complex carbohydrates – whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables. Carbohydrates should make up 50 to 60% of the daily caloric intake.

Protein is important for athletes but should not consume to excess. During periods of heavy training or when athletes are trying to build muscle between 150 and 200 grams of protein per day on a 3,000 calorie diet is sufficient. Also, it is important to note that young athletes require more protein than adults. Protein should make up 15 to 25% of the daily caloric intake.

Fat intake should be kept at a low to moderate level as excess fat intake can lead to increased body fat. Fats should make up 25 to 30% of the daily caloric intake.

Carbohydrate loading can be helpful when preparing for endurance type events.

Hydration is of the utmost importance. Plenty of water should be consumed prior to, during and after training and events.

Sweating during training and events leads to the loss of Vitamin B-1, chloride, magnesium and potassium – it is very important that these are replaced.

Anti-inflammatory agents such as Vitamin C and E are mportant due to the extra stress to the body that training can cause.

Exercise can increase free radical formation so athletes should ensure that they eat a diet rich in antioxidants including Vitamins A, C and E.

Athletes should consider adding a high quality multivitamin and mineral to their daily regimen in order to maintain maximum performance.

Female athletes and runners should include iron rich roods in their diet due to faster red blood cell break down.

Childhood obesity is growing at an enormous rate, I personally think parents play a large part in this by not interacting with there children as much as they should. (Yes I do understand that time can sometimes play a factor) Here are a few tips that you could do to get your kids active:

Find out what sport your child enjoys playing and enroll them, studies show that not only does joining a team help reduce weight gain but also raises your Childs self-esteem.

Take your child to the park, a ball and glove is pretty inexpensive and will help with hand eye coordination. You could also purchase a Frisbee.

Go hiking, it’s a great time for bonding and also enjoying the great outdoors.

Take your child fishing

Try and get your child more involved in after school activities (Studies show that children enrolled in after school activities increases there academic grades by 20%)

Have your child join the YMCA (Great for activity and interacting with other children)

As parents, it’s our responsibility to give our children a fair opportunity to start adult hood healthy. I hope you enjoyed my recommendations. Do you have something that works well for you that you would like to share? If so please do

In 2005 the book “The Volumetrics Eating Plan – Techniques and Recipes for Feeling Full on Fewer Calories” was written by Barbara Rolls, Ph.D. It was the updated version and follow up to “The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan” written by Barbara Rolls Ph.D. and Robert A Barnett which came out in 1999. “The Volumetrics Eating Plan” gives recipes as well as a program with food charting options to follow. This book was a New York Times Bestseller and was for a time listed as “The #1 Rated Diet in America”.

One of the most common reasons that people decide that they can not or will not stick with a diet program is that they can not deal with constantly feeling hungry or at least thinking that they are constantly hungry. “The Volumetrics Eating Plan” focuses on not dieting but instead eating foods that aid in controlling hunger. This plan is based around the energy density of different foods. Energy density can be determined with a simple formula - divide the calories by the grams of the food. With this plan the lower the energy density of a food the better the food is to consume and basically the more of that food you can eat and either lose weight or at least not gain weight. A good tip in picking low energy density foods is to pick foods with high water content. Due to the idea of the energy density of food this plan is also basically low fat. The key to this plan is that if you chose foods with low energy density then you can eat more food volume and thus not feel as hungry.

Overall this is a pretty good idea for a plan to follow instead of following a rigorous diet. There are limits to the program but they are more self-imposed. If one desires to eat high energy density foods for the bulk of their calories then they get to eat less volume of food. However, if one eats more of the low energy density foods then they get to eat a much greater volume and feel full more and more often which should help some people to stick with their healthy eating and living lifestyle.
