What is the Skulpt device?

Skulpt is the first of its kind to do what other IOT fitness devices can’t. Measure and assess your individual muscles for overall quality (they call it MQ) and body fat percentage (BF). Prior to this device we had other ways to measure overall body fat such as underwater weighing, body fat scales and calipers. Those are great methods and are still useful but they are not the best for tracking your body composition over time.

Image Gallery

[See image gallery at diet.myfit.ca]

The problem with the current body fat testing methods is…

The problem with all those methods are that we don’t know where our fat is accumulated throughout our body to know if we are indeed improving our composition. For example, some trainers measure success on our body weight or body fat percentage. If you are reading this, you know how this could be a mistake. Another way to measure success as a trainer is to take body measurements with a tape measure. While this is desirable for the abdominal area, it’s not ideal for your arms where you may increase the size of your arms after gaining muscle. Knowing what percentage of fat and muscle is extremely important for motivation to keep striving to achieve the best results.

What else should you use to track your progress?

We all know the best way to track your progress while working out is through a workout log. This way you can easily see which muscles are lagging, which muscles haven’t been exercised in a while and so forth. This should be used in conjunction with Sculpt. That way you can match the muscle quality graph with the numbers on your log. There are also apps you can use as well.

Why should a trainer purchase one?

Showing your worth after your original 6 or 12 sessions is the key to becoming a successful personal trainer. Unless you can woo them with your social game, the odds are that unless you are producing results for them, they will take what you taught them and move on. Now, lets say that you could show them with a graph how you did over time and prove that what you are doing to them WORKS. Also, lets say that they didn’t lose any weight but you’re telling them they are stronger and probably feeling better. That’s not a guarantee they will stay with you but maybe they increased their MQ (Muscle Quality) by 20 points and reduced their abdominal fat by 3% over that time. I would guess that you would get a renewed contract for your services.

Initial Impressions

My first impression of the device is exactly how it looks on their website except surprisingly even a higher build quality. It’s durable, seems water resistant (as it has to be because you spray it with water all the time) and it looks like I could drop it without damage. I wouldn’t suggest trying that as the front glass may break.

Random Thoughts

It also appears to look like a phone with a touch screen. It’s not a touch screen but it has buttons on the side to push to navigate through screens.

Powering it up and pairing it with the app is extremely straight forward. You’ll have no difficulties doing so.

Everyone I told about this device wanted to know their own scores and percentages.

The led’s on the side of the device let you know if the ‘reading’ you just took worked or you need to readjust the device or apply more moisture on the sensors.

How does it work?

There are two main ways:

You can use the app on the iPhone in remote mode. This way lets you have less interaction with the device and just place it all around the person as you go. The idea is much better than the result. I tried the ‘remote’ feature and was left pretty frustrated but I was also using a beta device and they had JUST implemented the ‘remote’ feature. I’m confident they will fix the bugs with this soon.

You can also use it straight on the device. This is the tried and true method and allows you to leave the iPhone behind.

With both methods you need the included water spray bottle which is the most important thing you need to do before each measurement. It may seem like you don’t need to spray between each measurement but you should as it will produce more accurate results.

Steps to measure:

Enter measurement mode and then it will prompt you to have a ‘Quick Measure’ or ‘All’. Quick measurement basically takes 4 readings and then comes up with an algorithm to come up with your score.

Once you click of those options you can spray the sensors with water and begin placing the device on your muscles. After completing all the measurements you can either sync the device or just look at your results on the iPhone.

Cons

Figuring out how to use it in each muscle was hard until they updated the app giving you images of how to place the device.

Measurements do vary slightly so making sure the device is very well sprayed and taking the measurements at the same time everyday will help. For example, in the morning, before a drink.

The battery lasts a little while but I’d prefer if it lasted longer. I find I have to recharge it before use even if I left 50% charge on it. It seems to drain without usage.

A better explanation of muscle quality (MQ) is needed.

An english translation from your progress may be helpful to know how you’re doing. For example, “Over the past 12 measurements you’ve increased your overall MQ by 10. You are getting much stronger overall. Keep up the good work”.

If you’re not a trainer or under 15% BF you might not want to spend this kind of cash (150 US) on a device like this. This is more of an elite fitness tool.

Pros

Just having any knowledge of your progress is extremely important and just the act of tracking may keep you away from using the dreaded ‘I’m too tired’ excuse. Knowing you’re improving is addicting and will keep you doing what is working.

An intuitive app, visual graphs, decent tutorials and a high quality device will keep you using it and prevent it from being a paper weight.

Breaking through plateaus with this will be easier because you can try different routines and see what’s working and what isn’t.

Conclusion

This device is exactly what I have been looking for and fits a need for personal trainers. Having this data in my toolbox helps my clients find out what is happening to them during their sessions. Like I mentioned earlier, this device isn’t for everyone that lifts weights. It’s mostly for users that are looking to get the most out of their routines and want to prove it’s effectiveness.

We were able to get our hands on the beta and think you should get the full version.

Preface

Before I begin talking about my comparisons I want to discuss how I’m comparing these and what type of person should consider my ranking valid. Also, I am calling these 2015 fitness trackers as most of them won’t be available for you to get your hands on until then.

Who is this comparison for?

A Fitness enthusiast that doesn’t want to wear multiple devices on their wrists yet wants the most functionality in one wrist device. This person also wants style but since all the devices discussed are ‘pretty stylish’ this isn’t an issue. Style is also in the eye of the beholder so I won’t be focusing on that.

Functionality

Collecting as much data about your habits and physical self requires sensors built into the devices. Some devices lack certain sensors which may be beneficial in coaching you to help motivate you to become healthier. Our focus is on the important ones which will help you create actionable change towards a new you.

Why only these devices

There are now way too many choices to pick from but these four have the most intriguing sensors for physical change which is the goal of all this. Also, only devices that are worn ALL the time (no clip ons) were considered. The clip ons require too much effort versus something that can just work and make recommendations.

Jawbone Up3

Link

Style

This device is the second most stylish of the bunch. It doesn’t show a big screen like the others show and for some people that are more against flashy wrist watches it provides a good solution.

Price

The price is actually right-on based on the fact that it’s a fitness only device and won’t control other apps, show you notifications, etc. It is attractively priced considering the technology and coaching features. Upon first glance it will be tough to justify this price over the older trackers.

Motivation

This device has some revolutionary features embedded inside which gives the capabilities of this device a pretty exciting future. With the right trainers behind creating an algorithm to suggest timely physical actions it is definitely the most motivational device on the market.

Other Uses

This device is mainly used for optimizing one’s fitness and not for anything other than that. I would NOT suggest getting this if you were hoping for a notification forwarder.

Waterproofing

Yes, this is completely waterproof which gives it a major advantage over the others. Wearing a Pebble for some time I have realized that I don’t think I can purchase anything but a waterproof device.

Battery Life

This is the biggest advantage over the other guys. With the exception of the latest R450 by Lifetrak it has an incredible 7 day battery life.

Other

Automatic Heart Rate: Since this device monitors your heart rate automatically it can also determine your resting heart rate without you guessing when you are at rest. It will therefore know when your heart has gotten stronger.

Coaching: This feature is the most anticipated part about this device for me. Having real-time suggestions about the data that is changing right now will have the greatest impact on physical behaviour.

Microsoft Band

Link

Initial thought

This is for Windows products only. Actually, it’s not, it’s for everyone but I don’t think I would consider this if I had an Android or iOS. There is clearly just a better option available (Jawbone UP3).

Style

Since the device needs to be worn with the screen touching your arm rest or table it’s going to always show the bulge at the top of the device. It’s not exactly a ‘looker’ based on that. If you look at it with your hand turned it is halfway between a smartwatch and a Fitbit Flex but much bulkier.

Waterproof

This device is water resistant which means that you can’t go swimming or pour water on top of it.

Battery Life

Early reviews indicate that the battery lasts about a day and a half

Other

Since the band has an active heart rate, GPS and UV monitor it can let you know what to do at any point in the day. Also, they have paired up with Men’s Fitness and others to provide coaching.

Summary

Microsoft is trying to adapt faster than the new Kickstarter projects which isn’t an easy task for a massive corporation. This product is their first demonstration of that leading the pack (finally) with technology that is competitive, different, and useful. If this was a Siri or Google Now product I would jump on it. Windows users should definitely purchase one of these.

Fitbit Surge

Link

Style

I am currently wearing a Pebble watch and a Flex on my other arm but this could combine the two for most people.

Other Uses

While it doesn’t have all the apps that the Pebble has it does have a lot of other things that I appreciate: texts, notifications and music control.

Fitness Technology

The Fitbit Surge has a lot of things going for it but I was still hoping for more. With the rumors of ‘blood glucose’, blood oxidation, perspiration monitoring, etc., it is unfortunate that we will have to wait a few more generations for it.

Waterproofing

The device is 5 ATM so you could swim with it.

Battery Life

They currently talk about a seven day battery life which is incredible and on par with my current Fitbit Flex.

Other

Since this device is bigger and seems bulkier than even my Pebble I can’t see replacing it with a Surge. It doesn’t have all the apps I need and the control that I use for my home automation. However, to those who aren’t looking for such sophistication it could be a good option.

Summary

The best part about the Fitbit is that it does everything well and isn’t a specialist. It’s not the one with the most apps or the most stylish, but it is the one that is going to do a lot of things and hopefully motivate you to change your body. I realize that some of you may dispute the review saying that it doesn’t deserve fourth. Well, I can tell you that a lack of waterproofing, no new sensor tech, bulky looks, and with no HealthKit integration planned there are definitely downsides. Let’s hope they don’t have another ‘#skinrash’ issue with this one. I was a sufferer with the Flex and it was itchy with major redness.

Apple Watch

Link

Style

Arguably the most stylish of the bunch with tons of options to suit your needs and your budget. Want gold, steel or the cheaper durable plastic? All available.

Overall Motivation

Since this product hasn’t arrived yet we are only going on what we know from the videos available to us. I’m willing to bet EVERY major fitness app and company will have some sort of app that can interact with the watch to make fitness easier without pulling out your watch. Motivation to exercise will be dependent on which ecosystem and apps you choose. You could have Withings, Fitbit, Jawbone or Nike. For this reason we gave it a 4.5 out of 5.

Other Uses

As much as the iPhone changed the way we do things, so will this watch. I don’t think people realize the ease of having Siri on your wrist mixed with real-time video.
Fitness Technology

As mentioned, the actual sensors aren’t top notch when compared to the Jawbone but being able to connect to other devices which could provide those services could offset the advantage that the Jawbone has.

Waterproofing

This is my biggest gripe with this watch. I’m not sure I would get a device that I couldn’t drop my hand in a tub with. I’m actually shocked they didn’t say that even if they need to ship another month later. I believe it’s extremely important to have in a watch that can be worn all the time.

Battery Life

The battery life is pretty abysmal at one day. Tim Cook said that you should be prepared to charge it daily so I would imagine that you’ll be lucky if you can make it a whole day. I usually don’t make it a whole day with my iPhone so I would assume it will be similar.

Other

Since this device has Siri built-in, it provides the user with more functionality than all the aforementioned devices. Having an all-in-one device also makes this much more attractive for the average fitness enthusiast or early adopter.

Summary

I was really disappointed that the Apple Watch didn’t come with any revolutionary sensors. There were some pretty awesome rumors that it would come with glucose, blood pressure and a few others. Those alone would have a major change in how we eat. With the inclusion of HealthKit in iOS 8, the Apple Watch and all the Health apps can now talk to each other very easily. I’m very excited about that feature alone. Until the Apple Watch happened everyone was focused on steps which really weren’t going to change your body the way intense exercise will.

Conclusion

For the user that NEEDS data

The Jawbone UP3 has the ability to change the way health coaching and medical doctors advise patients. I hate to use the term ‘paradigm shift’ as usually new devices are slight changes on old technology (accelerometers) but the UP3 has the potential to do so. Assuming they can integrate the right recommendations and add HealthKit and other apps people WANT to use with their data it could really change the way we manage our health. Knowing exactly when and if our bodies are burning calories (change in skin temperature versus ambient temperature and combined with a respiration sensor) is a major underestimated difference between other trackers. It is unfortunate that most people will not realize the power of having these sensors until the actual coaching is fine tuned and they time notifications when we are motivated and have time to act on it.

For the user that NEEDS functionality

The Apple Watch is going to provide you with productivity, communication, entertainment and games on your wrist. The terrible battery life will be forgotten when you realize that you don’t take your phone out for the most common tasks. Having a progress bar, exercise demonstrations and tips for real-time actions makes this the MUST have device if you don’t need every data-point available (see above).

For the fitness generalist

The Fitbit Surge is the one you want as it provides almost everything in a neat little package without getting into any tweaking and too many features.

For the Windows user

If you are an early adopter you need to have the Microsoft Band. Otherwise you should wait for V2 or V3 to come out when the hardware has evolved.

The Top 30 Tips to Change your Body

We have scoured tips, studies and fellow trainers advice and have come up with a printable list of tips you should put on your fridge as a reminder in 2014 to get more muscle and less fat. We could explain every point in detail but would like to keep it as a checklist.

Eat at least four times per day
There is so much conflicting advice but you should be eating at least 4 times per day (some say 6) with a minimum of 20 and max of 30 grams of complete protein (link)

ABS DIET POWER
This is the best nutritional program you can follow. It is a well-rounded and fat burning meal plan that is easy to remember and the best one we have rated to this date.

Eat vegetables to keep the body in a muscle building and fat burning environment. When you body enters an acidic PH state it is harder to prevent unwanted (link)

Do 20-30 minutes of super intense HIIT every other day
High intensity interval training is the fastest way to improve your VO2 MAX in the shortest amount of time along with burning a lot of fat. It’s a much less time consuming way of working out. (link)

Track and analyse your progress for faster gains (link)
Tracking your progress allows you to see if you are improving. There are several ways to do this from an app on your phone or a printed workout log book.

Every workout should vary either your frequency, intensity, time or type (FITT)
Periodization isn’t new but I can guarantee that most workout people do not use it to the fullest. Have a good read here for a good overview of what you should know.

Do squats, clean and jerk, bench press and deadlifts
These compound exercises recruit the most amount of muscle fibres which helps the most amount of fat burning and muscle generating hormones. It also helps break down your muscles faster than trying to do a bunch of isolation exercises like.

Drink 8 glasses of 8 ounce glasses of water a lot to stay hydrated (link)
Drinking enough water can have a lot of benefits from increased weight loss to better skin.

Make active plans during your “snacking” time
A lot of us snack and snack at a certain time of the day and can’t help break the habit. It’s either because you’re board or maybe it’s because you’ve programmed yourself to be hungry at that time because you always have food at that time. Try to make plans with people doing something active. Couples who sweat together, stay together.

Rest each muscle for 48-72 hours if doing more than 4-5 sets on it
Proper resting time is required to make sure that you’ve healed all the muscle fibres so they are fresh for the next time that you break them down during a workout.

Drink milk (casein protein optional) before bed
Having casein protein (80%) mixed with some whey protein and milk is the best way to keep your body in an anabolic state (link).

Setting goals
When setting goals you should follow the following. They should be specific and challenging but yet attainable. You should be setting milestones to celebrate and find a buddy to help keep you honest. Finally you should be learning from your progress. If you are failing at achieving these goals you should adjust one of the following above (link).

Weigh yourself daily
Weighing yourself is easy and a great reminder when you eat something you know you shouldn’t “Daily self-weighing did not appear to be related to increased disordered eating behavior and was associated with better weight loss outcomes.” (link) A great way to make this easy to analyze is through a wifi scale such as the Withings scale.

Use circuits
To save time. 40 minutes 3-5 days a week is all that is needed (link)

Use a protein and carbohydrate recovery drink
The research is clear that the use of these types of drinks is a necessity for during and after a workout. If you’re not using one you’re not gaining all that you could. If you’re just trying to burn fat you can dial down the amount of carbohydrates and keep the protein there. Fast acting whey is suggested.

Try frequent intermittent fasting
We wont get into all the details but this link is a full course on why you should try it. It does sound counter intuitive but this is science people.

Use advanced training principles
Use giant sets, negatives, pyramids and other methods frequently. They help your body prevent a plateau and give you gains faster through the same FIIT principle as above.

Time your sets
A muscle building or hypertrophy goal workout set should take 50 seconds to complete. Strength should be around 1-30 seconds and muscular endurance 80-90 seconds. If you are not timing your sets you are not getting the full benefit to your workouts.

Don’t sit all day
Sitting all day changes your body in a very negative way. Schedule high intensity walks on breaks. A fitness tracker will help.

Drink green tea
Green tea almost seems magical with all the positive things that it does for your body.

Drink coffee
Recently there was a new study that suggested that coffee does not dehydrate you! That’s great news because there is now no reason now not to drink it unless you actually cannot stand the taste of it.

Take progress photos
What is more motivational than looking at yourself and imagining it being a before photo? We suggest taking pictures every month.

Don’t drink calorie wasting drinks
Soda, beer or spirits (Red wine is ok on occasion)

Commit to change
Think about what is preventing you from gaining muscle and losing fat and make a mental and physical effort to prevent that from being. Write down the top five things in your life from preventing you from achieving what you want and remind yourself of those often.

Compete with a friend
One of the best reasons to get a fitness tracker is the friendly comparison feature. I personally walk a lot more because my friends see it! Walking isn’t the fastest or even the best way to make a change but it does prevent you from number 19

Stick to it
Research shows that it takes on average around 66 days to form a habit but for some people it can range from 18-254 days.

This is my must have list for body compositional change. I have posted all the sources for these beside the statements.

27-30 are the following. If you can’t follow all that was talked about above, remember this word:

C A R S

Consistency

If you haven’t heard about Athos yet and you are serious about changing your body or you are an athlete, what I’m about to tell you will blow your mind.

What is Athos Clothing?

Athos clothing is speciality-made with sensors placed all over it along with three specially-placed Bluetooth 4.0 transmitters to display your body statistics through an app.

What type of statistics are we talking about?

Real-time heart rate, muscle output, balance, cadence, active resting times and the list goes on. This brings me to the top 10 reasons I think Athos clothing will change the way we workout forever.

The Top 10 Ways Athos Will Change Fitness and Sports

1. Real-Time Tracking

Prior to this technology we had a version of real-time heart rate monitors, fitness trackers (such as the FitBit Flex) and using a log book to track our workouts. These are great but having real-time information at our fingertips for muscle output, balance, cadence and resting times just wasn’t possible. It opens up a whole new world of possibilities for the self-quantifying types.

2. Think you’re Tired? Guess Again.

Having real-time muscle output and heart rate values such as what Athos is attempting to achieve will make it possible for everyone to be their own personal trainer and to self-motivate. A lot of us quit a workout based on how tired we feel. Perhaps even cutting a set short because we think our muscles cannot do another rep. Knowing that one’s chest muscles are not fully activated during a press can help to achieve better form and overall muscle breakdown for recovery during rest.

3. Preventing Injuries: Are you putting too much stress on your quadriceps and not on your hamstrings?

Real-time recommendations are possible with this technology. Imagine doing a squat and finding out that you have been doing it all wrong and are not targeting the proper muscles. Perhaps you had your back arched and you were not putting your glutes far enough back. These are the types of corrections you could make in real-time.

4. Maximize your Time

Knowing the actual rest time in your workout along with your actual muscle output would let you know if you can rest or quit your workout. Imagine working out for 40 minutes instead of an hour everyday. This would make a long term difference and subsidize your purchase in a few months time (how much is your time worth?).

5. Coaching

Knowing which athletes are tired or are about to get injured could mean the difference between a win or a loss. While I don’t believe the integration is there yet, it could be in the next few years. Imagine a coach sitting at the side of the field knowing real-time information about his athletes vitals. Making decisions based on current resting heart rate values during a huddle would change the designed play. Why would you throw a ball to a guy who had a resting heart rate of 180, he is tired and is probably just about to gas out.

6. Google Glass Integration

While there is no current known method to do this yet, the possibilities with this would be incredible. Having the ability to see your metrics without taking your attention away from the activity would be revolutionary.

For example: Let’s pretend you’re golfing. Knowing that you are trying too hard or are not using enough of your core muscles to rotate around the ball could mean the difference of 40-50 yards in distance during a drive.

7. Smart Watches such as the Pebble Watch and Galaxy Gear Integration

Since a Google Glass app probably will not happen until the team at Athos have enough interest and feedback from customers to attack such a device, there are other wearable devices that are easy to port this type of information. While the Athos team has not specifically said their will be an API, I would imagine the apps will give out local notifications which will appear on the smartwatch that you’re going to buy this year. Having had a Pebble for some time I realized I can’t live without it. It is invaluable for getting data without having to take out my phone and it keeps me from playing with my phone all the time. #nobodylikesthat, #relationshipsaver

8. Automatic Workout Tracking

Imagine getting notifications of what to do on your smart watch but then the watch also telling you to either stop or keep going? Imagine it could change the exercises every week automatically to make sure you are attacking all angles of your muscles? Imagine all of this being recorded, checked and analysed in real-time automatically? I do not imagine this entire feature set right away but the ability will be there with each and every Athos product. Now if only they would let our app be integrated into their product!

9. Sport Specific Training

Once again, this will take time and need a demand to create a solution but you will definitely be able to assign exercise solutions to improvements in every type of sporting action. Ie. A baseball swing, a hockey V-Start etc. Having a visual recording of the action will allow you to see which muscles are slowing your action down or perhaps activating when they shouldn’t be.

10. The ULTIMATE Social Comparison Tool

Not only could you get live comparison charts with your friends, it would be deadly accurate for the results. It would be hard to cheat the charts as a workout log could contain information such as how far the user went, how slow they went and even how fit they are overall.

Pricing

Athos clothing is available now for pre-order at $298 (just for a shirt and the ‘core transmitter’). This may seem steep at the moment, but once you see what it can do I don’t think you will have a problem with the price.

The downside is that it is only available in the US at the moment but we are talking with them to try to find out when we get some Canadian love.

Make No Mistake

This is not anther fitness tracking product that you will have no use for in just a few months. This is a revolution in fitness and sports.

Introduction to Fitness Tracking

Fitness tracking isn’t new but it is recommended to quantify your fitness gains and show you when and how you fail. Over the past 5 years there has been a huge breakthrough in the type of tracking methods. The release of Bluetooth 4.0 gave birth to a whole new category of products that can send your progress to the cloud making your daily moves quantifiable.

Some of these trackers include:

Fitness activity trackers such as the Fitbit Flex, Withings Smart Activity Tracker, Jawbone Up, Nike Fuelband, Lifetrak C400 (C200, C300)

Wifi Scales such as the Fitbit Aria and the Withings WS-50 Smart Body Analyzer (The difference between the two is that the body analyzer does heart rate, CO2 and Bodyfat percentage while the Aria does not).

Withings Blood pressure monitor.

Heart rate monitors such as the Polar H7

Weight training logging apps such as MyFit Fitness

Diet calorie loggers such as MyfitnessPal (which integrates all the best apps and devices into one page)

Running apps such as RunKeeper

Fitness Trackers Comparison Articles and Summaries

2014 Update: There is an all new fitness tracker line-up for these brands.

1. Jawbone Up 24
2. Nike Fuelband SE
3. FitBit Force
4. LifeTrak C410

All of these now have bluetooth 4.0 and have improved on the negatives of the previous model. That said, most of my review still holds true in that the API’s and apps separate the devices along with the LifeTrak’s ability to never need charging. Out of these devices on apps and API’s alone I would pick the FitBit Force. They are soon adding the ability to see incoming calls and perhaps other notifications. That makes it much more useful on your wrist.

There are loads of websites that have already compared these products for you in-depth and we have posted them below (we only showed the wrist kind as I personally think that’s the kind most people want.)

The Best Wrist Fitness Trackers Available

For me, the ultimate goal is to have the best apps integrating all the products that you use to track your lifestyle communicate with each other. These apps are: MyFitnessPal (for calorie tracking), RunKeeper (for running) and MyFit Fitness (for weight training). With these three products alone and a great wifi scale like the Smart Body Analyzer you can automate your fitness tracking and take away the tedious parts of what a lot of trainers charge for. After wearing all these devices for some time my biggest gripe was having to charge and sync them. It’s something to be aware of if you pick a tracker with a poor battery life (Fuelband) or one that you have to plug in to sync (UP).

Jawbone Up

[See image gallery at diet.myfit.ca]

Introduction

Having owned a Jawbone Up since Dec 2011, I know everything there is to know about it. The sleep and activity tracking is really really great. It may, however, fail at the most crucial point of having one of these devices: real time feedback.

Pros

The UP has been recently updated with integration for all the apps mentioned above.

Extremely stylish device which you’re not afraid to show off. People think it’s a Livestrong bracelet.

The sleep charts and activity charts in the app are very attractive and give loads of detailed data.

I got 10 days of real battery life out of this device.

Calorie tracking on the app is based on feelings/mood and not so much on ‘numbers’.

Cons

You have to plug it in to your phone all the time!

There is no real time feedback for your progress.

I had to go through 3 separate ones and they all bricked (they don’t work anymore). Version 2 appears to have fixed this issue but it’s something to be aware of. These can brick anytime!

The band gets caught on clothes

The end cap falls off and gets lost really easily

Final Thoughts:

Getting a real time step count and calorie data into a calorie tracking app such as MyfitnessPal is crucial for the future of the device. Having a 10 day battery life (for real) is a bonus.

Nike Fuelband

[See image gallery at diet.myfit.ca]

Introduction

This stylish big name band made huge waves with scarce inventory and a flashy LCD screen showing progress.

Pros

Huge and bright LCD screen.

A great iOS app which shows your progress.

Bluetooth 4.0 so you don’t have to sync your band.

You don’t need a watch as it acts as one.

Super sexy and stylish band

No end cap to get caught on.

Very comfortable and won’t accidently open and get lost like the Jawbone Up or Fitbit Flex.

Easy installation

Cons

Terrible battery life (3-5 days).

The huge downside with the Nike Fuelband is of course the current lack of integration with other applications (MyfitnessPal).

No sleep tracking.

Much more expensive.

Must have an iPhone and a Mac to install their latest firmware and software.

Final Thoughts

While this device is a little more pricey than the others it does have the bluetooth option and a great iOS app. This device has a great LCD screen and doubles as a watch. Since the goal of fitness tracking is to motivate we think this should receive top honors as a fitness tracker. A huge con with this device is that it doesn’t track your sleep and currently doesn’t integrate well with all the other apps. All the other devices mentioned track sleep (the LifeTrak C400 does, but not the C200) and since the battery of the Fuelband only lasts 3-5 days it’s a big disappointment. With their recent API improvements it’s only a matter of time until more apps integrate with the Fuelband.

FitBit Flex

[See image gallery at diet.myfit.ca]

Introduction

Fitbit products almost need no introduction. They invented this category and provide excellent value. The Fitbit Flex is a new product which gives people what they wanted: a wrist version of their favourite Fitbit. Many users found with the old Fitbit that they were washing them accidentally because they forgot they were in their pants. This is the reason we are not reviewing any of those products. Wearable trackers are the future.

Pros

Open API and great app integration.

Stylish band.

Real time feedback.

Good battery life (7 days).

Bluetooth 4.0 for instant analysis on a PC or to get updates to a Pebble watch.

Cons

No LCD screen.

You have to tap the band to get your progress.

Only one type of data can be shown on the progress LED’s.

Plugging in the ‘dongle’ into the usb charger isn’t the easiest.

You can accidently get into sleep mode a LOT

Final Thoughts

Having an open API, bluetooth 4.0, a seven day battery and a fantastic app makes this device tough to beat. While this device doesn’t have an LCD screen, it does have LED lights which show your progress. The LifeTrak, Fuelband or Smart Activity Tracker all give a nice LCD real time view which does help with your motivation. All Fitbits have fantastic app integration and amazing API to get all your data. This device is also the most stylish of all the options and I am not ashamed to wear it out for dinner. This device has a major design flaw though, which is switching into sleep mode too easily.

LifeTrak C200

[See image gallery at diet.myfit.ca]

Introduction

Most people haven’t heard of this device before. It looks like a sport watch and functions as one too.

Pros

2 year battery life and it uses a regular watch battery!

Comfortable.

Sport watch looks.

Awesome price for what you get. This watch is a third of the Fuelband at $50.

Heart rate monitor which shows an active heart rate.

7 day history

The always there progress bar is a real motivational tool; for all the others you have to push a button or sync it to find out your current status.

Cons

No current app integration (but they are working on this with their higher end models which include bluetooth).

Can’t get the data off the device for analysis on the C200.

Only a 7 day history, while this is good for immediate motivation it also doesn’t tell a trainer the bigger picture. I would love to see this extended to at least the past three months.

Not as stylish as the others.

Having a full active heart rate monitor (shows you current readings) and an extremely long battery life (2 years!) makes this a must for non-techie types. It’s comfortable and looks better than the Pebble watch does. The band fits all wrist sizes (which ups the resale value). While the C200 doesn’t sync to your phone nor can you get the data off the watch it is a great device to keep moving. Seeing a giant number of my steps and a progress bar is a huge advantage.

Future Trackers for 2013

Withings : Pulse

The Pulse device is Withings first attempt into this category and it also brings along heart rate monitoring and bluetooth 4.0 integration. With an open API and lots of apps that already participate I have no problems recommending this as the best upcoming 2013 fitness tracker. The downside of this device may be that you need put it in your pocket as it is not a wristband and therefore it may end up in your washing machine by mistake.

LG Activity Tracker

LG’s new activity tracker watch band has a nice LCD screen like the fuelband but it doubles as a device to show your phone notifications. This is ideal as wearing more than one device at one time is somewhat bionic. This might just be the future best tracker for next year. Keep an eye on LG’s Facebook page for more updates.

July 5th Update: We just heard back from Bryan the moderator of LG’s Facebook page with the following release date: January 2014.

“Hey Rod,

We just checked with our brand team and the Activity Tracker will be available in January 2014.

The Best Current Wrist Fitness Tracker is…

It all depends on your situation. We have broken it down by person type.

For the person that doesn’t use apps or hates plugging in electronics and wants realtime feedback the LifeTrak C200 ($50) is a bargain!

For the person that wants a stylish device with all the bells and whistles of bluetooth, app integration, sleep data and real time feedback the Fitbit Flex will make you happiest!

It really is very easy to use and I have no trouble giving this a big thumbs up. From the quality to the integration with my other already used apps this is definitely the most featured and highest quality WiFi scale on the market

An Actual User’s Review of the Smart Body Analyzer (WS-50)

Update: May 22nd, 2015:

The device is much more battery efficient than the first year of use and it also provides almost I originally wanted in the wishlist with the exception of updating a server with certain variables. For example, I would really love it if it could post data to a specified server when the device changes state (new CO2 data or indoor temperature information). That would allow more connected hubs (#smartthings) to act upon this data (#nest ) to change the room (ie. close the blinds automatically).

Update: April 4th 2014:

A lot of the issues mentioned below have been ironed out and they introduced some new features into the scale which makes this still the most feature packed scale available on the market. Having weather updates and CO2 readings by pushing the centre button is really what I thought was possible with this technology. It also separates itself well from the cheaper Aria scale this way. Well done Withings.

Introduction

Most of us have heard of WiFi scales but I have found the latest and greatest as of May 3rd, 2013. This scale is an evolution of Withings previous model, bringing more features to the table. This review is not meant to go over all the specifications. You can do that here. This review will touch on its usefulness and how the Smart Body Analyzer has changed the way I maintain my healthy lifestyle. There are so many positives that I feel like I should discuss the negatives just to demonstrate that this is a legitimate review. My experience was using an iPhone 5 so Android users may have a slightly different installation experience. My background is an advanced personal trainer so I know what makes people quit exercising and this does the exact opposite.

Installation | Great (4.5/5)

Withings has taken great care into their setup and installation to streamline the procedure in just a few clicks through the menus (you don’t even have to type in your WiFi password).

UPDATE May 22nd, 2015:

Withings has fixed the difficult setup experience that I had a long time ago and now it’s a very simple setup and as long as you change to the athelete profile if you are ‘fit’ then it should be accurate and consistent.

OLD EXPERIENCE in 2014:
“My experience, however, despite being a tech geek, is that it was not quite as smooth as I would have expected judging by the obvious intentions of their smooth looking app. I went through all the menus and instructions that came with the scale and had a few errors. When I tried to get my first measurements to the app it did not contain the ‘body fat’ measurements. You need to enable it in your profile first. You may also need to assign certain measurements with profiles. Once you troubleshoot and take a few more measurements for the first day it seems to work itself out.”

Body Composition Scale Profile: Athlete Version 2011

You may also notice that when you first get the scale that your body fat maybe a little high. If you are a gym rat you need to change the scale’s setting for your profile.

I’m not about to hide something so beautiful

Most fitness gadgets these days are made of plastic and are not very attractive but this scale is meant to be shown and has an Apple like appearance to it. There isn’t one thing I would change with the appearance or quality of the product. It has only been two weeks since I received it but it is definitely made well.

App Integration | Fantastic (5/5)

Withings has been the pioneer in the world of wireless WiFi scales and it shows by the participation of its partners. Within the Withings app there are a few partners such as BodyMedia, RunKeeper and Zeo. This doesn’t seem like many but a lot of other apps such as MyFitnessPal, FitBit, MyFit Fitness (coming soon) and LoseIt! also connect to the scale through their own app making it easy to track your weight.

Ease of Use | Super easy, my two year old uses it (5/5)

This product is extremely easy to use. You don’t have to select a profile to enter your weight. You simply stand on the scale and it recognizes which profile to pull based on your weight. Once things are setup properly this could not be easier or more fun to use.

Usefulness | This is a pillar in weight loss maintenance (5/5)

Most fitness plans are easy to stick to for the first 21 days and then they become very difficult to maintain the same ‘umph’ that you had on day 1. It could be that you lost a few pounds and are content with the results. It could be that your old habits got in the way. This is the very reason to get this scale. Not only does it give you reminders (if you set them up), but it makes it easy to visualize your progress.

I have been training for a long time but most recently with having two kids it has been difficult to find the time at night to go to the gym. I can already tell that this scale has now changed my life (seriously). My outlook on my weight has changed. It is now so easy to keep it at the top of my brain.

Integration with the Pebble Watch

The pebble watch has been great to use with the Smart Body Analyzer. Every time I weigh myself I get a notification to my phone with the results. This is now timed perfectly when I step into the kitchen for my breakfast. This allows me to make an easy healthy choice and acts as a reminder for my goals. I accomplish this through ifttt.com and boxcar.io.

It’s not quite perfect, yet

There are a few things that I would change and it would be to make use of Bluetooth 4.0. While it is advertised as bluetooth it is really only used for the setup. You must have a WiFi connection in the room you keep the scale if you wish to make good use of the scale. For me this is not a problem so it was not counted into my scoring for this review.

I would like more triggers and timed alerts in ifttt.com to be reminded about my weight or goals; i.e. Right before lunch send me a reminder about my goal weight. This could be in the app or through ifttt.

July 3rd Update: As of their last update the WS-50 updates the C02 measurements automatically to their website. This is what I said:The CO2 measurements only get sent to the app when you weigh yourself which is a little deceiving when looking at their Youtube video. Knowing that you’re sleeping in a CO2 filled room is very interesting and I have opened my window everyday now.

Heart rate measurements may not be as useful as I thought they would be. I sometimes forget to weigh myself at the same time of day so my heart rate chart will be all over the map. A tagging filter system used in their app might be the best use of this feature. Ie. tag: ‘coffee’ and then you can filter your readings by clicking the coffee tag. That way it’s at least similar. Or perhaps you could filter the readings by time of day. The same goes with the weight chart.

Overall

There really are not too many products that change the way I behave. Having reminders first thing before my breakfast about my body fat and weight is the biggest motivation to eat healthy for the rest of the day. It really is very easy to use and I have no trouble giving this a big thumbs up. From the quality to the integration with my other already used apps this is definitely the most featured and highest quality WiFi scale on the market.

We have added a link to the product on Amazon where you can purchase it here:

Disclaimer

We were sent this scale from Withings so we could test our integration with our Fitness App, they did not pay us or pull our arm to write this review. This is my honest opinion and I stand by it.

What is circuit training?

With its origin tracing back to 1950’s, circuit training programs have come a long way and are now considered an effective way for athletes and fitness enthusiasts to enhance their strength, stamina and mobility. Circuit training simply refers to a section of the workout plan that incorporates strength training, endurance exercises, cardiovascular training and weight training exercises in succession without rest. In other words, it is a high intensity work-out program that could involve the use of both aerobic and anaerobic exercises. The main idea behind circuit training is to make sure that your heart rate is staying elevated.

Resting between circuits

A circuit typically represents a completion of all prearranged exercises in the program, and upon its completion, an athlete repeats the same exercises to finish another circuit. Usually there will be a short resting period to divide exercises within each circuit.

An example of a rest time is usually around 1-2 minutes. This time can vary depending on your goals (see chart A below). A heart rate monitor is ideal for monitoring circuits.

Heart rate monitors

Monitoring your heart rate is essential towards attaining your cardiovascular goals during a circuit. Strong hearts recover quickly and when you are out of shape your heart will take longer to return to a normal heart beat.

If you are just starting out with circuit training you can make sure that you are not over training (depending on your goal). You can monitor this with any available strap-on type heart rates monitors. There are many brands to choose from and they are very reliable and useful.

Measuring your pulse without a monitor and determining the percentage of your maximum heart rate

With two fingers (index and middle) place the pads of your fingers with light pressure on the opposing supine (palm up) facing wrist just below the base of your thumb. You should feel a pulse. You may need to feel around a bit until you find it.

Checking your pulse on your wrist

Count the number of beats in a 15 second time period. Multiply this by 4. This will give you your current heart rate.

Subtract your age from 220. This is your maximum theoretical heart rate (MHR).

Divide your heart rate by your MHR and multiply by 100% to get your percentage

During circuit training your heart rate should measure this percentage of your maximum heart rate.

Types

Different types of circuit training programs are:

Strength circuits

Including only weight training exercises is an example of a strength circuit. The circuit above only consists of two exercises and jumps back and forth between them without rest. These circuits focus on doing weight training exercises only.

Cardio circuits

Cardio circuits are great for athletes looking to improve their V02 Max and increase sport performance. These circuits will include only cardio exercises.

Strength-cardio circuits

These circuits are ideal for weight loss programs are they are a combination and are ideal for weight loss. This is the most common type of circuit.

Examples of cardio exercises to perform during this type of circuit include: mountain climbers, step-ups and burpees.

Circuit Training Design

A circuit program can also be designed based on the muscle group you are targeting. Here are some examples of circuits that target a specific area:

1. Upper body

This is an example of a beginner upper body circuit:

Dumbell Press

Pull ups

Arnold press

Burpees

You could also include ball crunches for improving core muscles for a complete attack of the major muscle groups of your upper body. The more advanced the circuit workout is the high the number of circuits in it.

You could also do an at home circuit by changing the dumbbell press to push-ups which would look like this:

2. Lower Body Circuit

This is an example of a lower body circuit

Jump Squats

Side Lunges

Calf Raises

Great on the spot exercises to add

Good circuit design ensures the user’s heart rate remains elevated during the entire circuit. You may wish to add these exercises which challenge your anaerobic endurance as well as your aerobic endurance. These exercises are:

Jump Squats

Burpees

Skipping

Jump Lunges (more advanced exercises)

Benefits of Circuit Training

A great way to boost cardiovascular endurance and fitness level.

Cuts down on workout time (most 30 minutes women’s fitness centres use this type of principle to lose weight).

No equipment necessary.

Easy to adapt to your goals and fitness level.

Research Studies and Circuit Training

A number of studies have been conducted on circuit training and a majority of them conclude that circuit training is an effective way to improve muscle stamina and cardiovascular fitness and increase lean body mass. Studies carried out at Baylor University and The Cooper Institute demonstrate that circuit training is an extremely beneficial way for women to achieve their fitness goals as well as maintain them for extended period. It also been found that a properly structured diet the addition of a circuit training program are helpful to elevate cardio-respiratory health.

Macrobiotic diet plan is a low fat, high fiber diet program that is devised to enhance the body’s energy flow thus promoting for its overall health and well being. Literally meaning ‘long life’ in Greek, this plant-based diet plan was developed in early 1900s by George Ohsawa – a Japanese philosopher – by integrating the philosophies of Zen Buddhism and Asian medicine with western medicine. In fact, it is more than just a diet plan with a recommended list of foods and focuses on improving both physical and psychological health of an individual through the principles of ecological wisdom, balance and temperance, and harmony and diversity. In other words, a macrobiotic diet emphasizes on governing all physical and mental functions rather than counting calories, eating negative calorie foods and gauging nutrients.

What foods are recommended?

The macrobiotic diet plan recommends you to intake foods that are natural to your environment as well as climatic zone.

As such, your basic macrobiotic menu plan should include:

Whole Grain: Nutrient packed whole grain is an important segment of this diet plan. Whole grains are complex carbohydrates, apart from enriched with protein, iron and soluble fiber. This will improve your digestive and cardiovascular health. Some of the recommended whole grain items are wheat, kamut, oats, millet and barley.

Organic Vegetables: The intake of lightly cooked vegetable or raw vegetable salad will help to provide your body with necessary antioxidants, calcium and fiber. Dark leafy vegetables and rooted vegetables are highly preferred.

Sea Vegetables: Under this diet plan, sea vegetables are regarded as super foods, since they have high content of proteins, minerals and vitamins.

Beans and legumes: As this diet limits the intake of meat items, your daily macrobiotic diet should consists of beans and legumes. This will provide your body with nutrients such as protein and iron.

Fruits: All kinds of fruits, especially those rich in folate, fiber, Vitamin C and phytonutrients, should be included in the diet. Cherries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries are among the fruit items that top the list.

Macrobiotic Pickles: Since they are not salty or spicy, pickles like Daikon radish pickle, takuan and organic sauerkraut can be used with one to two meals per day.

Soy Products: Soy items, miso and tempeh should be an important part of the diet, as they consist of high content of proteins.

Additional Daily Foods: To ensure your optimal health and well being, it is also important to include certain protein supplementing foods, soups and drinks should be incorporated in your daily macrobiotic diet, such as naturally sweetened desserts, noodles, kukicha twig tea and soup seasoned with miso.

For best results, it is better to seek assistance of an experienced macrobiotic practitioner to help you design an effective diet plan.

What are the foods that should be avoided?

It is vital to avoid or limit the consumption of certain food items such as:

Coffee

Black tea

Spicy foods

Processed foods

Foods with artificial flavours and preservatives

Meats and dairy products

How is this different than the other diet plans?

Even though macrobiotic is a restrictive diet plan, it is not thoroughly a low calorie diet plan as in the case of most of the other fruit and vegetable based diets, since it involves the intake of almost all types of food items in balanced amount, such as whole grains, meats and sea food dishes. In fact, a great thing regarding this diet plan is that you’ll never get bored or deprived of your favorite food. Another unique aspect of this diet plan is that it is environmentally based and hence factors such as season as well as time of the year are taken into account for devising the plan. For instance, this diet program recommends the intake of raw food items like salads during summer and spring. Likewise, heavy and concentrated foods are encouraged in winter and fall. This, in turn, is to ensure that your body gets right amount of energy and nutrient in a particular season. Perhaps the prime highlight of the macrobiotic diet is that it is inexpensive and can be easily followed with the selection of foods that are readily available from your nearby grocery or supermarket.

What are the rules for this diet?

The Do List

Cook rice in a pressure cooker

Take food only when you feel hungry

Sit in good posture while eating food

Chew your food completely and slowly

Use a hot wet towel to massage your body until it becomes red. This is to enhance the flow of electromagnetic energy in your body.

The Avoidance List

Avoid longer baths as it may drain minerals from your body

Avoid the usage of foods prepared using microwave oven

MyFit’s Conclusion

The Good

This diet plan is a lifestyle rather than a short term gain diet (we like this). The likelihood of sticking to a diet like this one increases the more it focuses daily living and less on numbers and counting calories.

It also focuses on everything you hear about healthy eating in general. Eat your food slowly, sit up straight, eat lots of vegetables and avoid processed foods etc. While this is good advice; it’s not generally a diet that is going to make you get noticed for your new found ripped abs.

The Bad

For those looking to lose weight and change their body composition this diet may not provide as much protein required for protein synthesis when a weight training regimen is integrated (as it should). We recommend a different diet such as the ABS DIET POWER diet. This diet is descriptive, easy to follow, suggests that you weight train and also is clear and concise which this diet is not.

The Bottom Line

There are too many rules and the diet doesn’t provide the results that you came to MyFit to find out about.

What is it?

Vitamin B12, also known as cyanocobalamin or cobalamins, is referred to as a water-soluble vitamin that is considered vital for the proper bodily functioning of the brain as well as the nervous system. Its role is also crucial for the formation of red blood cells. Broadly speaking, Vitamin B12 is a member of the vitamin B-complex family that also consists of seven other vitamins such as Vitamin B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), Vitamin B6 (pyridoxamine), Vitamin B7 (biotin), and Vitamin B9 (folic acid). Among the members of the Vitamin B family, B12 is perhaps the most complex vitamin in terms of its structure, as it contains some rare constituents such as cobalt.

Deficiency

A deficiency of Vitamin B12 may lead to several ailments and conditions. For instance, its inadequacy results in pernicious anemia – a condition in which cells become oversized and defectively shaped. There are also several other conditions and symptoms that are associated with a lack of Vitamin B12 such as:

dandruff,

depression

heart palpitations

memory problems

menstrual irregularities

paleness

sore tongue

weak pulse

Foods

Foods such as shrimps, scallops, egg yolk, liver, venison, beef, fermented plant foods, and certain types of yeasts including brewer’s yeast are considered some of the best sources of Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is also now available in the form of supplements and shots.

Safety

Vitamin B12 shots are mostly adopted to cope with persistent fatigue – a condition associated with the failure of the intestine to absorb vitamin b12 as a result of lack of an element in the stomach called Intrinsic Factor. They are also taken as relief for conditions such as Fibromyalgia and Autism. As per certain studies, a B12 shot can provide the body with immediate positive benefits, such as stress reduction, healthy skin, weight loss, boosting energy, and enhanced memory.

Although Vitamin B12 shots have been considered effective in many ways, it is strictly recommended to consult with your doctor prior to its usage. For instance, digestion process varies from person to person, and hence if the dosage is not adequate, it may sometimes cause hindrance to the bodily functions.

DO NOT try doing this without proper supervision by a medical professional.

Dr. Bernstein Diet uses B12 shots right?

Dr Bernstein is a Canadian-based doctor who has more than three decades’ experience in treating people who are overweight or obese. Apart from recommending a low calorie diet including such foods as:

celery

mushrooms

apples

lemons

bay leaves

veal cutlets

chicken liver

breasts

shrimp

tuna

decaffeinated coffee

and herbal teas

Dr Bernsteins’ diet program includes the administration of oral and injectable vitamins as well as mineral supplements in the form of Vitamin B6 and B12 shots. According to Dr Bernsteins, vitamin shots such as B12 shots serve as a fuel to burn fat and eventually lose weight. However, there are certain concerns regarding these shots and their long term effects on your body.

Benefits

Seen as an energy vitamin, Vitamin B12 shots are regarded as energy boosters due to their ability to aid metabolism and enhance energy levels. Perhaps for these reasons, B12 shots find a prominent position in many of the popular diet plans. Further, in contrast to B12 supplements that may take considerable time being absorbed by the body, a B12 shot is injected directly into the muscles, thereby enabling for smooth, easy absorption. Above all, these shots help to reduce cravings and counteract the feelings of fatigue and lethargy.

Can I buy vitamin B12 shots?

Vitamin B12 shots are over the counter products and hence can be purchased without any prescription. Even though many people use them without prescription for increased energy and to cure conditions like chronic fatigue, B12 shots may sometimes result in side effects including pain and infection at the shot area, sclerosis at the shot area, allergic reactions, and nerve damage. Therefore, as mentioned earlier, it is important to consult with a doctor before using.

We want to hear from you

Have you tried vitamin b12 injections? How did you feel? Who administered it? Did you have any side effects? Tell us about it in the comment section below.

MyFit Conclusion

Any weight loss that isn’t done through vegetables, protein and exercise is going to be hard to maintain in the long run. It’s best that if you do try this method to also have a great succession pla to keep the weight off after you go off this type of injection. While taking vitamin b12 as a multi-vitamin will not have the same effect we suggest you stick to a different diet plan such as the Abs Diet.

The good news is that Bob does present basic nutritional and fitness information in a way that people can understand. Also, the Best of Life Diet does suggest eliminating any one macronutrient (ie, fat, carbs or protein), encourages eating frequently, having plenty of water and reexamining your current nutritional intake

What is it?

The Best Life diet book was created by an exercise physiologist, Bob Greene, and has been made famous by Oprah. ‘Oprah owes her recent weight loss to his Best Life Diet plan’. Oprah promotes his plan as an opportunity to look at your life as a whole. Oprah has definitely pulled out all the stops to make Bob a celebrity by showing ‘before’ photographs of overweight people, listening to their testimonials and then unveiling the ‘new’ them with their slimmer bodies.

Basic Questions

At first glance, the Best Life Diet seems very logical: finding out what your own personal barriers are to keeping up with an exercise and nutritional program and overcoming them. These questions are:

1. Why are you overweight?
2. Why do you want to lose weight?
3. Why weren’t you successful in the past?
4. Why have you been unable to maintain weight loss in the past?

The next part of Bob Greene’s plan focuses on three phases. You will be asked to reexamine the decisions you make on a daily basis and gradually alter your habits to achieve lasting results.

Tips

• Weighing yourself daily
• Adding recommended ‘foods’ to your diet
• Removing alcohol
• Drinking more water
• Adding a vitamin supplement
• Eating 3 meals and 2 snacks per day
• Stopping eating two hours before bedtime.
• Writing down a 7-day nutritional log and seeing which types of nutrients you are lacking

These tips are basically said in every single diet here, while Bob keys in on them, we want to mention that they are not teaching something that ‘secretive’.

Bob warns you to stay away from these! Wait, who doesn’t!

His nutritional plan seems very simple; Bob lists six types of foods in his manual to stay away from:

soda

trans fats

fried food

white bread

regular pasta

high fat dairy products.

Recommendations

Whole Grain/Whole Wheat Cereal

Slim Fast – Nutritional Shakes (Meal Replacements)

Green Giant Spinach

Vegetables

Olive Oil / Canola Oil (second place)

Spritz Salad Dressing

Whole grain pasta with omega 3’s (flax seed)

Soy Milk

Mushrooms

Light Yogurt

Flat out Flat Bread

What he doesn’t mention is that…

Bob Greene is obviously sponsored by all of the brands mentioned and does not promote the foods as much as the brands. If you watched the Oprah special on January 15, 2007, Slim Fast (Optima) had an advertisement at the commercial break. All of the types of foods mentioned can be purchased without buying the specific brands being promoted. You do NOT need to purchase his sponsored brands; you can read through this website and visit our weight loss guide, complete High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) along with this weight loss circuit program and purchase this grocery list which overall may be much more effective than his Best of Life Diet. The best life team has released a whole line of supplements and vitamins to help prove our point further that Bob isn’t just looking out for you. While these supplements are probably fine, don’t think that you’re stuck with these and can’t look elsewhere.

Is there any bad advice with the Best of Life Diet?

Bob Greene mentions that olive oil should be the only oil purchased (next should be canola oil). I would disagree with that and encourage everyone to purchase Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

He also does not mention the benefits of having protein at every meal for weight loss. Protein has an extreme effectiveness on fat metabolism.

MyFit Recommended, Right?

These tips and overall diet plan are NOT for people with an above average knowledge of nutrition and fitness. Anyone who is reading this website most likely knows that the bad foods listed are not beneficial to one’s health, weight and appearance. What is most likely needed is a more advanced plan of action to get fit and lose weight.

The good news is that Bob does present basic nutritional and fitness information in a way that people can understand. Also, the Best of Life Diet does suggest eliminating any one macronutrient (ie, fat, carbs or protein), encourages eating frequently, having plenty of water and reexamining your current nutritional intake. Therefore, MyFit approves the Best Life Diet and gives it a solid 4/5. Remember that you’re going to get your best benefit from working out to build muscle that increases your BMR, that is the only way to ensure a long and successful fat loss journey.
