Performs initial nutrition assessment and follow up education with bariatric patients. This position requires extensive knowledge in the treatment of obesity and the use of behavioral modalities to effect change. The dietitian must possess strong interpersonal skills and teaching skills to communicate information to patients and colleagues. Requires leadership in a variety of settings as well as formal and informal teaching to medical students, house staff, nurses, dietetic interns and allied health professionals.  Serves as a resource person in the area of bariatric surgery for the hospital and community.<br><br><b>PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</b><br>Clinical Responsibilities<br>1. Assesses and educates new patients on the bariatric diet regimen<br>2. Develops nutrition care plans utilizing clinical, biochemical, and socio-economic and psychosocial factors.  Documents and communicates nutrition care plans through written and verbal systems.  Documents in medical record based on established standards of practice<br>3. Counsels follow up patients to ensure dietary compliance, nutritional adequacy and formulation of weight management goals<br>4. Assesses and adjusts diet regimen based on weight changes, laboratory values and clinical parameters<br>5. Works with interdisciplinary staff (physicians, physicians assistants, dietitians and program coordinator) in communicating any nutrition related issues influencing the overall progress of the bariatric patient.<br>6. Attends patient care meetings to discuss patient care issues with other members of the health care team as needed.<br>7. Makes follow up telephone calls to patients with questions regarding the bariatric diet.<br>8. Requires strong interpersonal and interviewing skills for competence in both clinical and managerial areas.<br><br>PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES<br>Clinical Responsibilities:<br>1. Maintains good rapport and effective working relationships with patients and their families, physicians, nurses, managers and administration.<br>2. Participates on multi disciplinary patient care rounds on assigned unit.  Assesses, evaluates and recommends appropriate nutrition intervention.<br>3. Develops nutrition care plan utilizing clinical, bio-chemical, and socio-economic factors.  Documents and communicates nutrition care plans through written and verbal systems (medical records, discussions on work rounds).  Documents in medical record based on established standards of practice.<br>4. As assigned, works with group leader and senior clinical dietitians in developing nutrition plans for forced fed patients.<br>5. Assesses and adjusts individual patient menu selections and nutritionals according to nutritional adequacy, and within sound fiscal management.<br>6. Interprets, evaluates, and utilizes pertinent current research related to nutritional care, and presents such at Nutritional Rounds, as appropriate.<br>7. Collaborates with case managers for discharge and continuing care plans.<br><br><br>8. Assists in development of standards of practice within the Department of Nutrition.  Assists in monitoring of selected clinical indicators and department audits.<br>9. Counsels individuals and groups with varied nutritional needs, taking into consideration diagnosis, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds.<br>10. Participates in selected quality management programs.<br>11. Collaborates with food service personnel and participates in problem solving food service issues<br>12. Performs other duties as requested by management staff.<br><br><br>Administrative Responsibilities:<br>1. Maintains food service safety and sanitation standards within established guidelines.<br>2. Assists in the control tube feedings and supplements<br>3.        Collects and reports productivity data to Director of Nutrition<br>4. Make weekly follow up telephone calls to patients unable to attend weekly clinic sessions.<br>7. Attend monthly patient care staff meetings to discuss administrative and patient care issues.<br>9. Assist in the development of new behavioral modification modules.<br>10.
