Let’s call it “success” to keep it simple. The bottom line is this: if you want success, and you want it more than anything else in the world, you will get it.However, if you want to run away from your fears to a safe place, a place you feel secure, then you want the security MORE than you want the success. This is why you don’t achieve those great dreams. The excuses or “reasons” will ultimately sound like:“I’m not smart enough” “I don’t have the money” “I don’t deserve more than I already have.” “I don’t have enough education” “I don’t have the qualifications to do this”All of these excuses are what keep us from our dreams. The way to discover what we are hiding from ourselves is to learn to ask the right questions. We KNOW all the answers. The problem is that we don’t ask the right questions. Here are two questions you can use in almost any quandary:“What is the BENEFIT of me not realizing my dreams?” “What am I getting out of it?”Trust me, you ARE getting a benefit or a PAYOFF for not realizing your dreams. You must discover what it is in order to eliminate it.One of the hidden benefits or payoffs is not having to leave our comfort zone. Even if we are unhappy where we are, we have convinced ourselves that going after what we want is more difficult and more painful and staying where we are. We may be miserable, but at least we are comfortable. The second question is: “What am I afraid will happen if I ...................… (fill in the blank with the dream)This encompasses the changes in lifestyle we will have to make in order to achieve our dreams. Also, what others will think. In order to have the success you want and deserve, you must answer and resolve these two simple questions.Okay, so what do you do?First, turn off the phone, TV, stereo, and all other distractions. Then get a pen and paper and write at the top of the page:“The benefits of NOT realizing my dream are:”List a minimum of 20. If you can’t “think” of any, then just “guess” and write them down. About the time you reach 10-15, you subconscious mind will take over. Write anything that comes to mind, no matter how trivial or insignificant.Just allow your mind to wander and go where it takes you. Get as specific as possible.Very few get past this point before they have some very interesting answers come up.Now ask yourself how your fear or procrastination has served you thus far. Realize the fear is there for a specific purpose. Find the purpose and ask yourself if it still serves you to have this fear. Perhaps it is time to let go of this fear and stop procrastinating once and for all. When you have lost the need for the fear, you will just naturally let it go (if you are ready to do so).And when you let it go, you will be free to move toward the thing you say you want----and you’ll do it with ease and joy.Are you ready to stop procrastinating or are you going to put if off a little longer? The choice is yours. In life you can only have two things - Reasons or Results - and Reasons don’t count! You either have what you want, or you have “reasons” why you don’t have it.Procrastination is a disease. The cure is convincing yourself that it no longer serves you.

About the Author:

Dr. Robert Anthony is an undercover secret for some of the most successful people on the planet. With 2003 estimated sales in excess of $1.2 Billion US Dollars, a dietary supplement purported to be responsible for numerous deaths, is now back on the market.
The FDA, following concerns raised by the medical community, over the deaths of several athletic individuals using the supplement, not just “couch potatoes” gallantly attempting to return to a more active and fit lifestyle, passed motion to ban the “diet miracle” fat burner. The 2003 death of 23-year-old Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler, resulted in a slew of negative publicity that lead to declining sales of diet and sports supplements containing the compound Ephedrine.
Ephedrine is a widely used alkaloid of Ma Huang (Ephedra Sinica, Botanical Family Ephedraceae) an ancient Chinese herbal stimulant. Known use of this family of herbs, dates back over 5,000 years. Ancient Chinese physicians prescribed ephedra tea and pills for the common cold, coughs, asthma, headaches, and hay fever. Ephedra comforts asthma and bronchitis patients by acting as a bronchial dilator. In recent years, the powerful stimulant, due to it’s proven ability to supercharge human metabolic rate, found it’s way onto the diet supplement bandwagon as the “Most Powerful Natural Fat Burner”. It was on this stage, it’s risk potential came to light.
Based on data collected from several poison control centers, a group of California based researchers had claimed the compound to be the most dangerous herbal product on the market. Because it is an herb, it was not subject to regulations governing pharmaceutical drugs and could be sold over-the-counter. This is still the case today.
The government's decision to ban the supplement, actually came late in 2003. According to the Public Citizen's Health Research Group in Washington, D.C., More than 150 deaths have been linked to the use of the compound in recent years. Tommy Thompson,
Health and Human Services Secretary at the time, said the government had enough evidence to confirm the supplement was so powerful it quite readily caused heart attacks. Thompson announced a "Consumer Alert" warning against the use of all products containing the herb in any form, further stating the agency had notified manufacturers of its intent to publish a final rule banning the sale of supplements containing the compound. The ban followed the government review of more than 16,000 reports of adverse events, Thompson said. The actual ban was issued in February 2004. The American Heart Association touted the ban, “a Victory for the health of Americans”. In a speech prepared in anticipation of this favorable court decision, Dr.Augustus Grant, then the acting president of the AHA, stated “It sends a clear message to consumers either using or considering the use of these products, who may be unaware of the potential risks… While they may believe they are doing something good for their health, in truth they could be putting themselves at serious risk.”
In the typical grandiose style of US capitalism at it’s finest, the powerful lobbyist groups representing the interests of the diet and supplement industries, flexed their muscles and went to battle.
One of the largest manufacturers of Ephedra based supplements, Metabolife International Inc., was quick to "respectfully" disagreed with the FDA's decision. The company stated that the FDA would be unable it to meet the burden of proving that ephedra products, when taken in accordance with their label directions for proper use, present a significant or unreasonable risk, as they lacked the data and information to prove such allegations. Two other major players, Nutraceutical Corp. and Solray Inc., followed through with a full scale legal challenge.
April 14, 2005, federal judge Tena Campbell of the Utah federal district court reversed the year old FDA ban , citing the agency’s inability to prove that any specific dosage of the controversial weight-loss drug ephedra was dangerous, and sent the matter back to the agency for further evaluation.
"A negative inference is different from the affirmative proof required..." Campbell wrote in her opinion. "There is not sufficient evidence in the administrative record to establish that the risks identified by the FDA are associated with the intake of low dose EDS."

*For more interesting information on Ephedra, visit <a href="http://www.ephedra.nu/uk_botanical1.html"target="'_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.ephedra.nu/uk_botanical1.html

DocStuey will soon be publishing a full scale article on the pros and cons of Ephedra use.

Doc Stuey

For more facts about deadly supplements in the news, see this recent article title
"New Study, Proof That Vitamin E Kills"?

Publish This Post

Copyright (H.Brett) 2005

Oxidative Stress Supplements : Hope or a Hoax?

Author: David Adler

Anti-Aging Research: Oxidative Stress and HGH Therapy

You may feel 30, but your body keeps reminding you you're not. You fatigue easily. Your bones and joints hurt more often. The only part of your body that's thinning is your hair. Aging occurs due to the growth of the tissues and other elements in side the body. With increasing age, physically and mentally healthy adults gradually become less fit and more vulnerable to illness and death. However, these changes happen at different rates in different people.

What if you could reverse some of the physical effects of aging? Looking, feeling, and performing 10, even 15 years younger? What if you could burn fat without dieting or exercising; increase your muscle mass without exercise; improve your sexual stamina and performance; enhance your athletic performance and endurance; have younger, more youthful looking skin; eliminate cellulite deposits; dramatically support refreshing deep sleep; build stronger and healthier bones; improve your cholesterol and triglyceride levels; strengthen your heart while lowering blood pressure; even improve your hair growth and texture; improve mood, memory and concentration abilities; strengthen your overall immune system; and likely add years to your life? Sounds like a bit much? Not to Mark Tyler and scientific researchers alike.

A married father of three children and a partner in a law firm in Arizona, Mark seemed to have it all. "I woke up one day and I looked in the mirror and saw an old man at the ripe old age of 44," Mark says, "I could not believe how tired and old I looked. I was not so concerned about the vanity wrinkles, but the weight gain and the overall lack of energy I felt. I knew right then and there I needed to find something to turn back the hands of time. That's when I started getting into anti-aging supplements like natural HGH secretagogue formulas. The results have been amazing."

What is HGH?

Located in the center of our heads there sits a rather tiny but very powerful gland called the pituitary gland. Human growth hormone (HGH) is one of 7 hormones secreted by the pituitary. Growth hormone, like thyroid hormone, has an effect on almost all our tissues and organs. As the name implies, it enhances the growth of various organs and tissues, especially muscle and bone. Basically, human growth hormone increases protein synthesis. Proteins are the major building block out of which our body is made. Normal secretion of HGH occurs in a daily cycle, like a tide. It varies with exercise, sleep, stress and nutrition.

Everyone naturally secretes HGH in their bodies from the day they are born with levels reaching their peak in the body during adolescence, which then slowly decreases with age. As we get older, HGH continues to slowly decline to the point where the body makes a small fraction of what it did at the age of 20. This deprives the body of what it needs for tissue, bone and muscle regeneration. This depletion of HGH is soon recognized by the familiar signs of aging, such as increased body fat, lack of vitality and energy, decreased muscle mass, wrinkling of the skin, poor immune health and poor general health.

Can Regenatropin™ Truly Combat Father Time and Oxidative Stress?

A few years ago, an article in the New England Journal of Medicine reported the opinion that the most effective anti-aging remedy for slowing (or reversing) the aging process would be to replenish growth hormones to proper levels. As a result, anti-aging specialists turned to a variety of natural secretagogue hormone replacement therapies. Perhaps the most promising of them all is Regenatropin™. This popular "anti-aging" product combines large doses of growth hormone-releasing amino acids with the latest advances in secretagogue nutrient technology. The clinical research findings on Regenatropin™ have been truly astonishing.

More and more research is being conducted into the process of aging and ways in which the process can be slowed. Through extensive research, scientists continue to find many positive results from HGH replacement therapy and its promising ability to successfully combat the degenerative aging process with products like Regenatropin.

About the Author:
David is a specialist in the field of anti-aging medicine and longetivity study. It was the last thing
I remember before losing consciousness. When I woke, I was
face down in a hospital bed with massive internal and
external injuries. The explosion that had injured me left
10 co-workers dead. I was hurled 300 feet onto a concrete
parking lot where I was found bent over at the chest like
most people bend at the waist. My first reaction upon
regaining consciousness was overwhelming fear. I was
almost completely immobile and piercing pain shot through
my spine every other second.

Informed I was a paraplegic, I fell into a massive depression.
I had always been a person on the go and now I couldn't even
get out of bed by myself. I was stripped of my pride and
personal dignity, paralyzed from the chest down and left
alone to wallow in self-pity.

My name is Kevin Saunders and I rose from those depths
to become a world champion and world record holder.
I became the first person with a disability appointed
to the President's Council on Physical Fitness. I am an
inspirational, motivational speaker and conduct lectures
across America, bringing a message of hope with my "There's
Always a Way" presentations and the Never Give Up award
I present to companies and individuals that overcome
incredible odds.

But it took awhile to turn my attitude around. When I
first became paralyzed, I was told it was okay to be
depressed, to take it easy and let others take care
of me. Unfortunately, that's the attitude a lot of
people without a disability have every day. They blame
other people and circumstances for their problems.

Trapped in my new body, I quickly realized I would
have to make major adjustments. This was not the same
body that had allowed me to compete in varsity football,
track, soccer and rugby at the collegiate level.
Dependent on others for everything, I found I could
only get things done as fast as the people helping me.

And, in most cases, they didn't care. I was ready to
give up. I remember saying to myself, "The hell with it!
It's not worth it! I will probably never have a life that's
anything close to the one I had before the explosion, not
a life that would amount to anything anyway!"

But I had a dream. As a youngster, I dreamt of becoming
an Olympian. Deep inside me, that dream still lived and
a small voice told me not to give up on the dream. It
said to find a way to reach my goals. My first focus was
getting well. After months of agonizing hardships, I was
well enough to work out and take control of getting things
done myself. I had to relearn how to do everything. Each
simple task I conquered was a major accomplishment. I could
have easily given up on my dream, but I didn't. I learned,
it's not what happens to you, it's how you respond that
makes the difference between success and failure.

So what's your dream and how do you achieve it? Here are
just a few of the things I learned as I made my way toward
my dream.

First, decide what it is you want to accomplish then
set some goals. Get a pencil and paper with a table or
comfortable place you can sit at to write down whatever
comes to mind including mental and physical fitness goals.

While you are in that relaxed state with no distractions,
ask yourself what fitness goals you would set if you knew
there was no way you could fail. Write down all the things
that come to mind.

Once you have your list, find other people, books or
articles about or by people who are already doing,
looking or feeling like you want that ultimate vision
of yourself if you knew you couldn't fail to reach it.
Write your goals on a big piece of poster board or a
card and place it where you will see it multiple times
every day. This will help you keep consistent focus on
positive thoughts and images of your major goals.

During this process, be sure to consistently ask yourself
if each action you are taking is moving you closer to your
goals or further away. If the action is moving you away
from your goals, then it's time to find an alternative
action to take you closer to your goals.

Setting goals, writing them down and taking action to achieve
them are techniques that have given average people without
hope the opportunity to really make something of their lives.
This could be your chance, the chance of a lifetime. Don't
let anything hold you back. It really is up to you to take
that step of faith. You are ultimately in control of your destiny.

If you aren't sure how to get started, read and reread those
books and articles about the people who are achieving the
things you want to do. Or, you can hire a professional in
the field to help you. Even better, find a workout partner
and do this together. Having a support group will be critical
to your success, but remember that you are the most important
ingredient. When it comes to reaching your goals or getting
in shape, no matter who you are, where you are or what
situation you are in, the only person responsible for making
it happen is you. That's the bottom line. You do it by saying
to yourself, "This is my life, I have control over it and I
won't settle for less!"

As a past member of the President's Council on Physical
Fitness and Sports, my mission has been to serve as a
catalyst to promote, educate, encourage, inspire and
motivate the American people of all ages in the development
of physical fitness and sports participation and to realize
their benefits. I want people to know that being healthy,
eating right and having a positive mental attitude is paramount
for anyone wanting to affect a positive change in his or her
health and fitness level. After you read this article, try
taking the challenge and apply these principles to your life.

Remember, you are either living better or dying, there's
no in between. So, find a way. By focusing on the fitness
goals for your life, you don't have to be a professional
fitness champion to look like one. Read those books and
articles that fit your goals. Take action and put those
ideas and principals you learn to use. You'll be happy you
did. All the best, for a brand new you!

Kevin Saunders is an inspirational/motivational speaker
and author of There's Always A Way, (foreword by President
George Bush) available at www.kevinsaunders.com.

"Kevin Saunders responded to an almost overwhelming situation
changing himself and his life in the process. The answer is any time! The most important thing is that you just do it. Continuous cardiovascular exercise, such as walking, jogging, stair climbing, or cycling, sustained for at least 30 minutes, will burn body fat no matter when you do it. However, if you want to get the maximum benefits possible from every minute you invest in your workouts, then you should consider getting up early and doing cardio before you eat your first meal - even if you're not a "morning person." Early morning aerobic exercise on an empty stomach has three major advantages over exercising later in the day:
Early in the morning before you eat, your levels of muscle and liver glycogen (stored carbohydrate) are low. If you eat dinner at 7 p.m and you eat breakfast at 7 a.m., that's 12 hours without food. During this 12-hour overnight fast, your levels of glycogen slowly decline to provide glucose for various bodily functions that go on even while you sleep. As a result, you wake up in the morning with depleted glycogen and lower blood sugar - the optimum environment for burning fat instead of carbohydrate. How much more fat you'll burn is uncertain, but some studies have suggested that up to 300% more fat is burned when cardio is done in a fasted, glycogen-depleted state.
So how exactly does this work? It's quite simple, really. Carbohydrate (glycogen) is your body's primary and preferred energy source. When your primary fuel source is in short supply, this forces your body to tap into its secondary or reserve energy source; body fat. If you do cardio immediately after eating a meal, you'll still burn fat, but you'll burn less of it because you'll be burning off the carbohydrates you ate first. You always burn a combination of fat and carbohydrate for fuel, but depending on when you exercise, you can burn a greater proportion of fat relative to carbohydrate. If doing cardio first thing in the morning is not an option for you, then the second best time to do it would be immediately after weight training. Lifting weights is anaerobic (carbohydrate-burning) by nature, and therefore depletes muscle glycogen. That's why a post lifting cardio session has a similar effect as morning cardio on an empty stomach.
The second benefit you'll get from early morning cardio sessions is what I call the "afterburn" effect. When you do a cardio session in the morning, you not only burn fat during the session, but you also continue to burn fat at an accelerated rate after the workout. Why? Because an intense session of cardiovascular exercise can keep your metabolism elevated for hours after the session is over. If you do cardio at night, you will still burn fat during the session, so you definitely benefit from it. However, nighttime cardio fails to take advantage of the "afterburn" effect because your metabolism drops like a ton of bricks as soon as you go to sleep. While you sleep, your metabolic rate is slower than any other time of the day.
Burning more fat isn't the only reason you should do your cardio early. The third benefit of morning workouts is the "rush" and feeling of accomplishment that stays with you all day long after an invigorating workout. Exercise can become a pleasant and enjoyable experience, but the more difficult or challenging it is for you, the more important it is to get it out of the way early. When you put off any task you consider unpleasant, it hangs over you all day long, leaving you with a feeling of guilt, stress and incompleteness (not to mention that you are more likely to "blow off" an evening workout if you are tired from a long day at work or if your pals try to persuade you to join them at the pub for happy hour.)
You might find it hard to wake up early in the morning and get motivated to workout. But think back for a moment to a time in your life when you tackled a difficult task and you finished it. Didn't you feel great afterwards? Completing any task, especially a physically challenging one, gives you a "buzz." When the task is exercise, the buzz is physiological and psychological. Physiologically, exercise releases endorphins in your body. Endorphins are opiate-like hormones hundreds of times more powerful than the strongest morphine. Endorphins create a natural "high" that makes you feel positively euphoric! Endorphins reduce stress, improve your mood, increase circulation and relieve pain. The "high" is partly psychological too. Getting up early and successfully achieving a small goal kick starts your day and gives you feelings of completion, satisfaction and accomplishment. For the rest of the day you feel happy and you feel less stress knowing that the most difficult part of the day is behind you.
So, you say you're not a morning person? Take heart; neither am I. I can sleep in like you wouldn't believe! But I get up anyway because I know the effort is worth the results. When I have a bodybuilding goal that I am clearly focused on, such as reaching 4% or 5% body fat for a competition, I'm on my Stairmaster for 45 minutes every morning at the crack of dawn without fail. Sure it's a challenge at first, but you know what? After a few short weeks, It's no longer a chore and I'm "in the groove" - and you will be too. Just try it. Make a commitment to yourself to do it for just 21 days. Once those 21 days have gone by, you'll already be leaner and you'll be on your way to making morning workouts a habit that's as natural as brushing your teeth or taking a shower. Once you start getting used to feeling that buzz, you'll become "positively addicted" to it. The more you do it, the more you'll want to do it. Before you know it, early morning cardio will your new habit; you'll be leaner, your metabolism will be faster and you'll feel fantastic all day long!

About the author Author: Tom Venuto

The <a title="Discover this DocStuey Tested/Approved and Highly Recommended Program. Think of every detail; the workouts, the dieting, the level of effort, the sweat, the time - everything.

Now grab a pen or pencil and draw a small circle - about the size of a golf ball - in the center of a sheet of paper. Imagine that all the work you’re doing is contained in that small circle. Inside your circle, write the words, "Where I am now: My comfort zone."

Next, take your pen and draw another circle outside the first one so you have two concentric circles. (If you didn’t draw the first one yet, go ahead and do it now so you have a visual).

The larger circle represents personal growth and positive change. In the fitness arena, that might mean better health, higher levels of cardiovascular fitness, increased strength, bigger muscles or decreased body fat. In sports it might mean performing a skill or event at a higher level of competency.

If you’re not seeing the changes you want - a frustration so many people are experiencing today - it means you’re staying completely inside that circle of comfort most of the time. In order to make a positive change in your life, you have to expand your boundaries by climbing outside your comfort zone.

If that’s all there is to it - if a little step outside your comfort zone is all it takes to grow and improve - then why don’t more people do it? What makes that little step so difficult?

The answer is simple: In the space between your two circles, write the word, "pain" a few times, all the way around the circumference.

You see, the second you leave your comfort zone, you experience pain, DIS-comfort and awkwardness. Since all positive changes take place outside the comfort zone, change is painful. The very moment most people feel the pain, they pull back inside the comfort zone. This is the reason why most people fail to improve themselves or create lasting changes in their lives: They are unwilling to put up with the pain of change.

The pain we’re talking about may be: (1) the physical pain of muscles aching and lungs burning, (2) it may be the emotional "pain" of feeling awkward and clumsy at doing something new (such as a complicated exercise or athletic maneuver), or (3) it may be the "pain" of discipline and sacrifice. (For example, saying no to dessert, getting up at 5:30 a.m. for cardio, or passing up on a night out at the bars with your friends). Most likely, it’s all three types of pain.

The statement "no pain, no gain" has been misinterpreted, criticized and labeled a fallacy by many. However, the people doing the criticizing are almost always "comfort zoners" who haven’t achieved much with their lives. Don’t listen to them. Instead, follow the small percentage of people who step out and achieve great things.

Achievement expert Brian Tracy says, "90% to 95% of people will withdraw to the comfort zone when what they try doesn't work. Only that small percentage, 5 or 10 percent, will continually raise the bar on themselves; they will push themselves out into the zone of discomfort, and these are always the highest performers in every field.

Studies at the University of Chicago by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of "Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience" concluded that the highest achievers are those who consistently push themselves out of their comfort zones. Instead of withdrawing to their comfort zones when they don't get immediate results, they force themselves to stay at this awkward, uncomfortable and painful (but higher and better) level of performance until the pain finally subsides and they become comfortable at the new higher level. Or, as motivational speaker Tom Hopkins puts it, "pain of every change is forgotten when the benefits of that change are realized."

If you ask a champion in any field of endeavor, you will find that rather than avoid pain, they embrace it and accept it as part of the game they must play to win. Champions realize that pain equals growth and the benefits far outweigh the discomfort.

Seven-Time Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenneger said, "I realized that pain could become pleasure. We were benefiting from pain. We were breaking through the pain barrier and shocking the muscles. I looked at this pain as a positive thing, because I grew."

Cyclist Lance Armstrong put it this way: "Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit however, it lasts forever."

Muhammad Ali said it like this: "I hated every minute of the training. But I said to myself, bear the pain N O W and live the rest of your life as a champion."

Go back and look at your circles again. Do you realize that it may be entirely possible to continue expanding your circles to infinity? Draw a third one. And a fourth. Imagine yourself climbing up out of your comfort zone to these higher levels and look back at how small the space is that you used to occupy. You have far greater potential than you’ve ever imagined.

In William James’ essay, On Vital Reserves: Energies of Men, he wrote,

"Compared to what we ought to be, we are only half awake. Our fires are dampened, our drafts are checked. We are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources. The human individual thus lives usually far within his limits; he possesses powers of various sorts which he habitually fails to use. He energizes below his maximum, and he behaves below his optimum."

It’s a widely accepted fact that we only use a tiny fraction of our physical potential and even less of our minds. However, no true expert in human potential today would ever dare set a definite limit on what we are ultimately capable of achieving because for all practical purposes, our potential is literally infinite.

Have we seen any slowdown in athletic, intellectual, spiritual and scientific advancement during our lifetimes? Quite the opposite; the curve of progress is accelerating thanks to the brave souls who had the courage to step out their comfort zones. Meanwhile, the mediocre masses are left further and further behind because they would rather pull back into the apparent comfort and stability of their small "circles" rather than step forward through pain and into growth.

Ironically, when someone says, "I’m happy just staying right where I am," he or she is demonstrating their ignorance of a basic law of nature. It’s the natural law that all things in the universe are either growing or decaying. There is no standing still. "Comfortably maintaining" is an illusion. Truth is, you must grow. You must push yourself beyond what you’ve done in the past if you want to avoid falling behind.

You don’t have to aspire to become Mr. Olympia, Tour De France winner, or heavyweight champion of the world, but you must continue to grow, whatever that means to you. All you have to do is step outside your comfort zone and endure the "pain" of effort, discipline, sacrifice, frustration and hard work, and your reward of growth is as certain as the sun rising in the East tomorrow.

Soon the pain subsides, you enjoy the benefits of the change, and the pain is forgotten. You’ve reached a new, and higher plateau of achievement. Be on guard, though, for it’s not long before that higher level becomes your new comfort zone, and then it’s time to press on again.

Ultimately, you can’t avoid experiencing pain of one kind or another. Project yourself into the future for a moment; see yourself in your final days, reflecting on what you’ve achieved in your life time - and reflecting on what you wanted to achieve, but didn't even attempt. As you visualize this scene, remember the words of Jim Rohn: "We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons."

You have more potential than you've ever imagined. The only reason you're not living up to your full potential is because you are withdrawing... back inside zone of comfort...every time the going gets tough and the work gets hard. Well, here's the truth that no one else in the health and fitness business wants to tell you:

"Change is tough and getting fit takes hard work."

This article is complements of

Tom Venuto , NSCA-CPT, CSCS
Certified Personal Trainer
Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist
Fat Loss Coach

Tom has written over 170 articles and has been featured in IRONMAN Magazine, Natural Bodybuilding, Muscular Development, Muscle-Zine, Olympian’s News (in Italian), Exercise for Men and Men’s Exercise. Linda was a 46 year old mother of two, and she had been a member for over a year. She had been working out sporadically, with (not surprisingly) sporadic results. On that particular day, she seemed to have enthusiasm and a twinkle in her eye that I hadn’t seen before.

“I want to enter a before and after fitness contest called the “12 week body transformation challenge.” I could win money and prizes and even get my picture in a magazine."

“I want to lose THIS”, she continued, as she grabbed the body fat on her stomach. “Do you think it’s a good idea?”

Linda was not “obese” by any means, she just had the typical “moderate roll” of abdominal body fat and a little bit of thigh/hip fat that many forty-something females struggle with.

“I think it’s a great idea” I reassured her. “Competitions are great for motivation. When you have a deadline and you dangle a “carrot” like that prize money in front of you, it can keep you focused and more motivated than ever.”

Linda was eager and rarin’ to go. “Will you help me? I have this enrollment kit and I need my body fat measured.”

“No problem,” I said as I pulled out my Skyndex fat caliper, which is used to measure body fat percentage with a “pinch an inch” test.

When I finished, I read the results to her from the caliper display: “Twenty-seven percent. Room for improvement, but not bad; it’s about average for your age group.”

She wasn’t overjoyed at being ‘average’. “Yeah, but it's not good either. Look at THIS,” she complained as again she grabbed a handful of stomach fat. “I want to get my body fat down to 19%, I heard that was a good body fat level.”

I agreed that 19% was a great goal, but it would take a lot of work because average fat loss is usually about a half a percent a week, or six percent in twelve weeks. Her goal, to lose eight percent in twelve weeks was ambitious.

She smiled and insisted, “I’m a hard worker. I can do it”

Indeed she was and indeed she did. She was a machine! Not only did she never miss a day in the gym, she trained HARD. Whenever I left my office and took a stroll through the gym, she was up there pumping away with everything she had. She told me her diet was the strictest it had ever been in her life and she didn't cheat at all. I believed her. And it started to show, quickly.

Each week she popped into my office to have her body fat measured again, and each week it went down, down, down. Consistently she lost three quarters of a percent per week – well above the average rate of fat loss – and on two separate occasions, I recall her losing a full one percent body fat in just seven days.

Someone conservative might have said she was overtraining, but when we weighed her and calculated her lean body mass, we saw that she hadn’t lost ANY muscle – only fat. Her results were simply exceptional!

She was ecstatic, and needless to say, her success bred more success and she kept after it like a hungry tiger for the full twelve weeks.

On week twelve, day seven, she showed up in my office for her final weigh-in and body fat measurement. She was wearing a pair of formerly tight blue jeans and they were FALLING OFF HER! “Look, look, look,” she repeated giddily as she tugged at her waistband, which was now several inches too large.

As I took her body fat, I have to say, I was impressed. She hadn’t just lost a little fat, she was “RIPPED!”

During week twelve she dropped from 18% to 17% body fat, for a grand total of 10% body fat lost. She surpassed her goal of 19% by two percent. I was now even more impressed, because I had only seen a handful of people lose that much body fat in three months.

You should have seen her! She started hopping up and down for joy like she was on a pogo stick! She was beaming… grinning from ear to ear! She practically knocked me over as she jumped up and gave me a hug – “Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

“Don’t thank me,” I said, “You did it, I just measured your body fat.”

She thanked me again anyway and then said she had to go have her “after” pictures taken.

Then something very, very strange happened. She stopped coming to the gym. Her "disappearance" was so abrupt, I was worried and I called her. She never picked up, so I just left messages. No return phone call.

It was about four months later when I finally saw Linda again. The giddy smile was gone, replaced with a sullen face, a droopy posture and a big sigh when I said hello and asked where she’d been.

“I stopped working out after the contest... and I didn’t even win.”

“You looked like a winner to me, no matter what place you came in” I insisted, “but why did you stop, you were doing so well!”

“I don’t know, I blew my diet and then just completely lost my motivation. Now look at me, my weight is right back where I started and I don’t even want to know my body fat.”

“Well, I'm glad to see you back in here again. Write down some new goals for yourself and remember to think long term too. Fitness isn’t a just 12 week program you know, it’s a lifestyle - you have to do it every day - like... forever.”

She nodded her head and finished her workout, still with that defeated look on her face. Unfortunately, she never again come anywhere near the condition she achieved for that competition, and for the rest of the time she was a member at our club, she slipped right back into the sporadic on and off workout pattern.

Linda was not an isolated case. I’ve seen the same thing happen with countless men and women of all ages and fitness levels from beginners to competitive bodybuilders. In fact, it happens to millions of people who “go on” diets, lose a lot of weight, then quickly “go off” the diet and gain the weight right back.

What causes people to burn so brightly with enthusiasm and motivation and then burn out just as quickly? Why do so many people succeed brilliantly in the short term but fail 95 out of 100 times in the long term? Why do so many people reach their fitness goals but struggle to maintain them?

The answer is simple: Health and fitness is for life, not for "12 weeks."

You can avoid the on and off, yo-yo cycle of fitness ups and downs. You can get in great shape and stay in great shape. You can even get in shape and keep getting in better and better shape year after year, but it's going to take a very different philosophy than most people subscribe to. The seven tips below will guide you.

These guidelines are quite contrary to the quick fix philosophies prevailing in the weight loss and fitness world today. Applying them will take patience, discipline and dedication. Just remember, the only thing worse than getting no results is getting great results and losing them.

1) Don’t “go on” diets. When you “go on” a diet, the underlying assumption is that at some point you have to “go off” it. This isn’t just semantics, it’s the primary reason most diets fail. By definition, a “diet” is a temporary and often drastic change in your eating behaviors and/or a severe restriction of calories or food, which is ultimately, not maintainable. If you reach your goal, the diet is officially “over” and then you "go off" (returning to the way you used to eat). Health and fitness is not temporary; it’s not a “diet.” It’s something you do every day of your life. Unless you approach nutrtion from a lifestyle perspective, you’re doomed from the start.

2) Eat the same foods all year round. Permanent fat loss is best achieved by eating mostly the same types of foods all year round. Naturally, you should include a wide variety of healthy foods so you get the full spectrum of nutrients you need, but there should be consistency, month in, month out. When you want to lose body fat, there’s no dramatic change necessary - you don’t need to eat totally different foods - it’s a simple matter of eating less of those same healthy foods and exercising more.

3) Have a plan for easing into maintenance. Let’s face it – sometimes a nutrition program needs to be more strict than usual. For example, peaking for a bodybuilding or fitness contest requires an extremely strict regimen that’s different than the rest of the year. As a rule, the stricter your nutrition program, the more you must plan ahead and the more time you must allow for a slow, disciplined transition into maintenance. Failure to plan for a gradual transition will almost always result in bingeing and a very rapid, hard fall "off the wagon."

4) Focus on changing daily behaviors and habits one or two at a time. Rather than making huge, multiple changes all at once, focus on changing one or two habits/behaviors at a time. Most psychologists agree that it takes about 21 days of consistent effort to replace an old bad habit with a new positive one. As you master each habit, and it becomes as ingrained into your daily life as brushing your teeth, then you simply move on to the next one. That would be at least 17 new habits per year. Can you imagine the impact that would have on your health and your life? This approach requires a lot of patience, but the results are a lot more permanent than if you try to change everything in one fell swoop. This is also the least intimidating way for a beginner to start making some health-improving changes to their lifestyle.

5) Make goal setting a lifelong habit. Goal setting is not a one-time event, it’s a process that never ends. For example, if you have a 12 week goal to lose 6% bodyfat, what are you going to do after you achieve it? Lose even more fat? Gain muscle? Maintain? What's next? On week 13, day 1, if you have no direction and nothing to keep you going, you’ll have nothing to keep you from slipping back into old patterns. Every time you achieve a goal, you must set another one. Having daily and weekly short term goals means that you are literally setting goals continuously and never stopping.

6) Allow a reasonable time frame to reach your goal. It's important to set deadlines for your fitness and weight loss goals. It's also important to set ambitious goals, but you must allow a reasonable time frame for achieving them. Time pressure is often the motivating force that helps people get in the best shape of their lives. But when the deadline is unrealistic for a particular goal (like 30 pounds in 30 days), then crash dieting or other extreme measures are often taken to get there before the bell. The more rapidly you lose weight, the more likely you are to lose muscle and the faster the weight will come right back on afterwards. Start sooner. Don't wait until mid-May to think about looking good for summer.

7) Extend your time perspective. Successful people in every field always share one common character trait: Long term time perspective. Some of the most successful Japanese technology and manufacturing companies have 100 year and even 250-year business plans. If you want to be successful in maintaining high levels of fitness, you must set long term goals: One year, Ten years, Even fifty years! You also must consider what the long term consequences might be as a result of using any "radical" diet, training method or ergogenic aid. The people who had it but lost it are usually the ones who failed to think long term or acknowledge future consequences. It's easy for a 21 year old to live only for today, and it may even seem ridiculous to set 25 year goals, but consider this: I've never met a 40 or 60 year old who didn't care about his or her health and appearance, but I have met 40 or 60 year olds who regretted not caring 25 years ago.

Burn The Fat, Feed the Muscle (BFFM) is a fat loss program which acknowledges the simple truth that going "on diets," entering "Fitness challenges" or competing in "Transformation contests" without having long term goals and a lifestyle attitude, is a recipe for failure. One headline in the San Francisco Chronicle said that the battle between the low and high carbers had become so heated since mid 2002 that “Knives had been drawn.”
From my vantage point (as a health and fitness professional down in the trenches), it looks more like tanks, artillery and machine guns have been drawn! Tragically, the people being hurt the most by these “diet wars” are not the experts, but the dieters.
After its original publication in 1972, The Atkins Diet was regurgitated in 1992 as “Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution,” creating a new surge of interest in low carbohydrate dieting. Then, in July of 2002, the controversy reached an all time high when the New York Times Magazine published an essay by Gary Taubes titled, “What if it’s all been a big fat lie?” The article suggested that new research was now proving the late Dr. Atkins had been right all along.
More research in 2003 seemed to corroborate the Taubes story: Two studies in the New England Journal of Medicine in May of 2003, and another in June 2003 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, suggested that Atkins was equally, if not more effective for weight loss than conventional diets – at least in the short term.
With the publication of this new information, Atkins supporters boasted, "See, I told you so,” while their opponents fired back in defense of their high carb, low fat positions. Meanwhile, low carb foods and supplements became all the rage, bread and pasta sales took a nosedive and the wheat industry cried the blues.
With differences in opinion as opposite as the North and South Poles, it’s become unbearably confusing and frustrating to know which weight loss method is best and safest. At the date of this writing, in late 2003, obesity has reached an all time high –AGAIN! According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, 64% of Americans are overweight and 31% are obese, and it’s only getting worse.
Obviously, the popular weight loss methods today – including the low carb diet – are still missing something…but what?
If you’re confused by the whole high carb, low carb thing and if you’re frustrated with your attempts at trying to lose weight and keep it off, then this may be the most important report you will ever read. In the next few minutes, you’ll discover the real truth about low carb diets and a real solution to the problem of excess body fat. Read on to learn the 10 Lies about the Atkins diet and the truth that will set your body free!
Lie #1: The Atkins and other low carb diets don’t work
If your definition of what "works" is quick weight loss, then the Atkins Diet DOES work. Recent studies showed that the Atkins Diet causes greater weight loss than the American Heart Association-recommended high carb, low fat diet. In fact, for obese people with disorders of carbohydrate metabolism (hyperinsulinemia, hypoglycemia, and insulin resistance), Atkins-style diets have been shown to work especially well.
However, if your definition of what "works" is permanent fat loss, then the Atkins diet doesn’t fare so well... but neither do any other diets. It seems that despite some encouraging initial successes, Atkin’s dieters still face the same difficulties keeping off the weight as everyone else. Some of the same studies showing rapid weight loss on Atkins in the beginning also showed substantial weight gain as soon as the diets ended.
Truth is, a growing body of evidence is mounting that carbohydrate restriction can accelerate weight loss in the short term, but it has yet to be proven that it keeps the fat off in the long run.
Which approach towards low carb dieting is best is also up for debate: Not all low carb diets are high fat or ketogenic and not all are “ultra-low” in carbs. A low carb diet can be low in carbs and high in fat, it can be low in carbs and high in protein, or it can be somewhere in the middle.
I predict that continued research will discover that moderate carbohydrate restriction (especially in a cyclical fashion) and careful selection of carbohydrates, will in fact assist with fat loss via hormonal control, metabolic efficiency and appetite regulation. I believe that neither extreme - the severely restricted low carb diet (ketogenic diet) or the very high carb, low fat diet – will emerge the victor.
Lie #2: There’s a ton of new research proving the Atkins diet is effective
If you surf around the Internet for a while searching for “Atkins Diet,” you are likely to see a lot of advertisements and news briefs pointing to the new research “proving” that Atkins is effective.
"New England Journal of Medicine Vindicates Atkins diet."
"Studies suggest Atkins diet is safe."
"New research challenges 30 years of Nutritional Dogma."
Truth is, these headlines are not giving you the full picture.
Until and unless you have closely examined these studies and the researcher’s interpretation of the results, don’t be so quick to believe the hearsay.
The general conclusion of nearly all these studies is that Atkins IS equally if not more effective for short term weight loss than conventional diets. However, nearly all the researchers also conclude with remarks such as:
"The results are very preliminary,""The take-home message is that this diet deserves further study." "More research is needed."
Furthermore, consider what the Atkin’s diet was being compared to in these studies: The traditional “food pyramid” diet with 60-65% carbs including plenty of pasta, cereals and bread, right?
What if the traditional high carb diet is wrong too?
Don’t write off carb restriction completely, but don’t ditch all your carbs yet either.
Lie #3: The new studies prove that the Atkins diet is healthy and doesn’t raise cholesterol as previously believed
In a May of 2003, the results of a 12-month study on the Atkins diet were reported in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). One group followed the traditional food pyramid with 60% of the calories from carbohydrates while the second group followed the Atkins diet.
After one year, Atkins participants had a greater increase in the good HDL cholesterol and a larger drop in triglyceride than the high carb group. Gary Foster, the leader of the study said, "Our initial findings suggest that low carb diets may not have the adverse effects we anticipated."
Conventional wisdom has dictated for years that saturated fat and cholesterol were dangerous and unhealthy, contributing to coronary heart disease. This led most health professionals to condemn low carb diets that allowed large amounts of saturated fat.
This belief is now being questioned. Many authors such as Mary Enig and Uffe Rashnkov have presented compelling cases that dietary cholesterol and saturated fat do not cause heart disease. The latest research seems to confirm this. However, many factors affected the results of these new studies.
In some studies, the subjects did not follow the Atkins Diet to exact specifications and never entered ketosis, so conclusions about The Atkin’s Diet, ketosis and coronary health cannot be drawn yet. In other studies, cholesterol-lowering drugs were used. And in still others, some subjects actually showed increases in total cholesterol. Those who did show improvements may have previously been on a high refined sugar, high saturated fat diet and dropping the sugar was one step in the right direction. Furthermore, some of the drop in blood cholesterol could be attributed to the decrease in body weight.
Clearly, you can’t lump all dietary fats into the same category. Processed and chemically altered trans fats have been condemned by virtually every health and nutrition expert on the planet. Other fats, like salmon and fatty fish, are among the healthiest and cardio-protective foods you can eat. Much evidence is showing that reasonable amounts of naturally occurring saturated fats such as those found in whole eggs and red meat also need not be feared (especially in the absence of sugars).
Truth is, all the information we have available at this time indicates the “fat phobia” and “fat makes you fat” scare has been unfounded because not all fat is the same. However, claims that diets very high in overall and saturated fat are healthy and safe for long term use are still premature.
Lie #4: The Atkins diet will help you keep fat off for good
Dr. Atkins writes that his diet "Is so perfectly adapted to use as a lifetime diet that, unlike most diets, the weight won’t come back."
It’s a weight loss axiom that the more extreme a diet and the faster the weight loss, the more difficult it is to maintain the results. Slow, steady and balanced seems to win the race when it comes to weight control.
Unfortunately this isn’t what most people want to hear. The four pounds per week and up to 15 pounds in the first two weeks that Atkins promises sounds much more impressive.
There are two things you really need to know about rapid weight loss:
(1) What kind of weight was lost? How much of it was body fat and how much was water, glycogen and lean tissue?
(2) Are you going to you keep the weight off for good?
Most low carbers won’t keep the weight off for more than a year, and many will fall off the wagon long before that.
Keith Ayoob, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association (ADA), said in an official ADA statement about the 2003 NEJM studies: "Twelve months is an equalizer; you hit a wall. Your lifestyle starts to be affected and you get bored. A high dropout rate is a sign that extreme diets can be difficult to maintain.
Truth is, despite Dr. Atkin’s claims and the new research apparently supporting them, we still don’t know what will happen in the long run. Based on the results of the recent three, six, and twelve month studies, researchers have begun to organize longer trials. One of them will be five years in length.
What you will probably see in long term studies is that Atkins and other very low carb diets, while effective for weight loss in the short term, will be found no more effective for long term fat loss than any other restrictive diet (and that’s NOT very effective).
Lie #5: Calories don’t count and you can eat as much as you want while on the Atkins diet.
Dr. Atkins proposed that calories don’t count and he advised his clients to eat as much as they want while on his program. Atkins wrote, "The so called calorie theory has been a millstone around the necks of dieters and a miserable and malign influence on their efforts to lose."
Here’s the truth about calories and low carb diets:
When you go on a very low carb (ketogenic) diet with more fat, your appetite is diminished and you feel fuller. Appetite control may be a legitimate benefit of the Atkins diet, especially for individuals who struggle with hypoglycemia, hunger and cravings. As Dr. Atkins points out, "Our physical urges are hard to combat."
However, this does not mean you can eat as much as you want. It means that your hunger may be blunted on Atkin’s plan, causing you to automatically eat less without counting calories or even thinking about calories.
People on the Atkins diet who lose weight are not eating more than they burn and losing fat in spite of it. Whether you count calories and consciously eat fewer than you burn, or you don’t count them and unconsciously eat fewer than you burn, either way, the end result is the same.
While counting calories in the literal sense is clearly not always necessary, you always have to be aware of calories and portions. No diet or special combination of foods can override the law of calorie balance.
Anyone who believes that you can eat as much as you want and still lose weight is living in a dream world.
Lie #6: A brand new study just proved that the Atkins diet gives you a metabolic advantage so you really can eat as much as you want
A 12 week study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health and presented in October 2003 to the North American Association for the Study of Obesity found that subjects on a low carb regimen lost just as much weight as those on a standard high carb, low fat diet.
The shocking part was that the group on the Atkins diet could eat 300 more calories than the group eating the conventional high carb food pyramid diet. This left researchers scratching their heads saying,
"It doesn’t make sense - it defies the laws of thermodynamics." "A lot of our assumptions about a calorie is a calorie are being challenged."
Unfortunately, some of the Atkins troops were quick to interpret the results as meaning, “See, I told you calories don’t count.”
Actually, calories do count and the explanation for these results is quite simple.
A calorie is NOT just a calorie. If all calories were created equal then a 2000 calorie diet of Krispy crème doughnuts would have the same effect as a 2000 calorie diet of chicken breast and green vegetables. Do you really think these two diets will have the same effects on your health and body composition?
Certain foods and certain diets DO give you a metabolic advantage. One advantage is the effect of a diet’s composition on your hormones; namely insulin and glucagon.
A second advantage is called the thermic effect of food. The thermic effect of food means that a certain number of calories are used just to digest and absorb the food, leaving a net calorie value substantially less than the total amount of caloric energy that was contained in the food.
For example, a lean protein food such as chicken breast has a thermic effect of around 20-30%. This means that for every 100 calories of chicken breast consumed, the NET energy utilized by the body is only 70-80 calories. (Some people call this “negative calories.”)
Stated differently, this means you really CAN lose weight on a higher calorie intake if you eat foods with a high thermic effect.
What’s especially interesting – giving confirmation of the metabolic advantage of a high protein diet – is that the foods provided in this particular study were low carb, but NOT typical Atkins fare. Instead of lots of red meat and saturated fat, the subjects ate mostly fish, chicken, salads, vegetables and unsaturated oils.
I think study’s director, Penelope Green, hit the nail on the head when she said, "Maybe they (the low carb, high protein group) burned up more calories digesting their food."
Truth is, not one study has ever proven that you can “eat as much as you want” on Atkins or any diet. Even when a diet provides a metabolic advantage, AFTER that advantage is factored in and you look at NET calorie utilization, you are still left with the calories in versus calories out equation.
Lie #7: The Atkins diet causes faster and greater FAT loss than conventional diets
Most health, medical and nutrition organizations recommend that you lose weight (body fat) at a rate of no more than 2 pounds per week. In his book, Dr. Atkins says that the average weight loss in the first two weeks on his plan is 8 to 15 pounds.
Like many diets, Atkins overstresses total weight loss (and quick weight loss), while not stressing enough the difference between body weight, body water, body fat and lean body mass.
Truth is, low carb diets definitely cause greater weight loss, especially in the initial phases. But this is mostly due to a large drop in water weight and glycogen (stored carbohydrate), not necessarily increased fat loss.
Weight loss is the wrong goal! Your goal should be permanent fat loss and you should be measuring and tracking your body fat percentage and lean body mass on a regular basis.
Don’t gloat over large, rapid “weight losses”… it might be mostly water and muscle.
Lie #8: Carbohydrates make you fat
Dr. Atkins wrote, and I quote, "Carbohydrates are the very food that makes you fat." He also wrote, "Diets high in carbohydrates are precisely what most overweight people don’t need and can’t become slim on."
These are very misleading statements of half-truth.
The “carbs make you fat” myth is probably the most pervasive and damaging lie about weight control ever told. It’s caused tremendous confusion and frustration to already confused and frustrated dieters.
First, focusing primarily on any macronutrient (protein, carbs or fat) or macronutrient ratio should be secondary to energy balance. What makes you fat is eating too many calories.
Truth is, you can’t blame all “carbohydrates” as a group for why we are getting fatter. What type of carbohydrates are we talking about? There are good carbs and bad carbs. The “bad” carbs are the refined ones; white flour and white sugar products like white bread, white pasta, sugar sweetened cereals, candy and soft drinks.
To avoid confusion, I would suggest never using the word “carbohydrate” without putting the adjective “refined” or “natural” in front of it.
Ironically, Dr. Atkins did make this distinction in his book, yet he still chose to recommend removal of almost ALL carbs during the induction and weight loss phases of his diet - even the healthy and nutrient-dense good (natural) carbs. This creates rapid weight loss and the appearance of a hugely successful diet right from the first week.
Again, the real questions are: What kind of weight was lost and can you keep the weight off for good?
A healthy, maintainable fat burning diet should be centered on natural foods – and for most people, that includes natural carbs in moderation - not the total removal and demonizing of all carbohydrates.
Lie #9: Ketosis makes you feel better and doesn’t affect your performance
The human organism is neither pure carnivore, nor pure vegetarian. Your body is a remarkable machine that is fully capable of adapting to whatever fuel is provided in predominance. You can burn protein, fat, or carbs for energy and most people can adapt well to using dietary fat for energy after a short adjustment period. However, carbohydrates are your body’s preferred – and most efficient - fuel source for strength training and vigorous physical activity.
Many low carbers believe that fat is a more efficient energy source than carbohydrates, but this is not true. Fat is not a more efficient energy source, it is only a more concentrated energy source.
Since the fuel for muscular contraction is carbs (glycogen) a high fat, low carb diet is not the best approach to fat loss for athletes, bodybuilders or highly active individuals. These diets simply don’t support high intensity training.
Very low carb diets might be a temporary quick fix for the sedentary, severely overweight, or those with orthopedic conditions that prevent any exercise. It seems that ketogenic diets take off weight even with little or no exercise (although the weight loss won’t be pure fat and you may not keep it off). Some Atkins dieters even report feeling more energetic after adapting to the low carbs and high fat. It’s likely, however, that most of them were relatively inactive. Low carbs and high activity don’t go well together.
Truth is, a more balanced diet of natural foods combined with exercise is a much better way to take off pure fat for good.
Anyone who CAN exercise SHOULD exercise! Of the two methods for creating a calorie deficit – burning more, or eating less – the former is the superior method with far fewer downsides. Any fat loss program that does not make exercise the centerpiece is ultimately destined for failure.
Lie #10: Ketogenic diets (very low carb) are the secret to fat loss
The term “low carb” is used very broadly. To some, a diet like the Zone, which consists of 40% carbs is “low carbs.” To others, “low carb” is more extreme. A ketogenic diet is a VERY low carb diet, usually between 40-70 grams of carbs per day or less. The induction phase of the Atkins diet is limited to only 20 grams per day.
Because they allow virtually no carbohydrate, ketogenic diets, by definition, are extremely strict and nutritionally unbalanced. It’s an irrevocable law that the more “extreme” a nutrition program is, the greater the side effects and the more difficult the diet will be to stay on.
Dr. Atkins claimed, "Ketosis is the secret weapon of super effective dieting."
Truth is, while some recent studies have suggested low carb diets do work, not a single study has proven that it’s necessary to restrict carbs so severely that you go into ketosis.
The benefits of reduced carbs and more protein/fat include a higher thermic effect, appetite regulation and hormonal control. What the low carb folks don’t want you to know is that a moderate reduction in carbohydrates (and/or removal of processed carbs) is often all it takes to get these benefits, while being much easier to maintain for the long haul.
So if ketogenic and very low carb diets aren’t the best way to achieve permanent fat loss, then what is the best way???
Dr Atkins made many excellent points about weight control in his book. He spoke out on the evils of processed carbohydrates. He identified carbohydrate sensitivity and hyperinsulinemia as contributing factors in obesity. He spoke of the metabolic advantage of high protein. He pointed out that there may not be a direct one to one correlation between saturated fat, dietary cholesterol and heart disease.
To his credit, Dr. Atkins had discovered some important facts about weight control, and had the courage to publish and stand by them long before anyone else did. In the end, unfortunately, he drew some questionable conclusions from this information and, like so many other diet gurus, he left out some large and important pieces to the puzzle.
If permanent fat loss were as simple as removing carbohydrates from your diet, then why has obesity surged to an all-new high in 2003 and why are there so many Atkins failures?
Could it be possible that the conventional high carb, low fat food pyramid approach and the Atkins diet approach have BOTH missed the mark, and that the optimum diet for permanent fat loss is somewhere in the middle?
Could it be possible that dieting is the absolute worst way to lose body fat and that the proper type of exercise program combined with a more balanced approach to nutrition is the answer?
One of the biggest errors weight loss seekers make today is to accept one philosophy completely or reject it completely. They take a side and “take up arms” to defend their position without considering the merit of each individual piece of the philosophy. Most of the weight loss programs being promoted today contain perfectly valid points, but as a whole, are a total mish mash of truth, half-truths and lies.
That’s why, for over 20 years, I have literally turned myself into a human guinea pig in my search for a sensible and healthy method of permanent fat loss. I studied and then personally tested the low carb diet, the high carb diet, and nearly every other diet in between. I found good points and bad points in all of them, many of which I have already revealed to you in this report.
I then compiled all the positive points of each fat loss method into a structured format, while discarding all the negatives. What emerged was nothing short of remarkable: An all-natural system that has allowed me to peak at a body fat level of 3.4% and to maintain my body fat at 9% or less all year round, for the last 15 years… without drugs, extreme diets, or unnecessary supplements. It’s worked for thousands of other people too.
If you would like to learn exactly what I discovered about permanent, natural fat loss from two decades of study and experimentation... and if you’d like to learn how it can help you escape the diet wars for good, and finally achieve the body you’ve always wanted, I encourage you to visit my fat loss web page at <a title="Discover this DocStuey Tested/Approved and Highly Recommended Program. So, who do you trust… which diets right for you? I mean there has to be 20-30 fast easy diets to lose 15-20 pounds of fat, maybe as much as 40 pounds of fat, over the next few weeks, before your next party or vacation! I read those news flashes all the time too! What a load of BS! Diets have been around for decades, and with all the success stories, surely there must be good ones. Well news for you… if diets were the answer, the percentage of the population classified as “Obese” or “Overweight” would not be on the rise each and every year since the assassination of JFK.
Diets don’t have long term success. Diets typically create deficiencies one or several areas. Pounds lost, always include lean tissue an essential fluids as well as some stored body fat, this due largely to a brain produced enzyme “Lipoprotein Lipase”. We’ll discuss this enzyme in more detail in a detailed article later. Many diets do have some points of merit, and if followed to the letter, can produce impressive short-term benefit and real reduction in overall body fat, which is the goal.
A big problem with diets is that most people going on a diet, are “ON” or “OFF a diet, never really changing the life long habits that made them fat in the first place. An even bigger problem, is that over 95% of these people diet, without ever understanding the underlying cause/effect of the diets they are doing.
OK, now you kind of get the message, diets don’t work. Diets are not the long-term answer to a slim healthy you!
Well good old DocStuey is more than pleased to announce, that after reviewing tons (no pun intended!)of BS internet driven diets, dieting, diet review sites, marketing all kinds of weight loss solutions that promise quick, painless, easy results… the kind of results every one of the 150 Million overweight North Americans dreams of, as the only thing that actually sheds weight without effort, is their wallets… We have “The Answer You’ve Been Looking For!”.
I tip my hat to Tom Venuto a self professed “Outlaw” Body builder, who’s had enough of all the BS he’s seen daily over the years in the diet, health and fitness world. To understand this, you’ll need to realize that supplements commonly labeled "vitamin E", including those used in nineteen clinical trials which were the basis of a meta-analysis, underlying the newly realized increase in death rate due to high dose supplementation, are mislabeled and misleading. They do not contain "vitamin E", the simple fact being, there’s no such thing. Alpha-tocopherol is no more "vitamin E" than folic acid, riboflavin or pyridoxine on their own can be called "vitamin B". As it is with "vitamin B", "vitamin E" is a complex of several member molecules, each having an important role and proper ratio. The Vitamin E Complex is a family of eight molecules, four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. These eight E-complex family members work synergistically, within the body to support healthy function of the organs, tissues, and provide protection from free radical damage; as well, they support the assimilation and utilization of other nutrients.
Even "vitamin E" sold as complete "with mixed tocopherols", still delivers only half of the E-complex, leaving you missing all four highly beneficial tocotrienols. On top of this, the ratios of the different tocopherols contained in most "mixed tocopherols" supplements are at best, dangerously unbalanced. These products typically contain an average five times as much alpha-tocopherol as the other three tocopherols combined. These such formulations pretty much guarantees that you won’t gain any health benefits from these other vitamin E molecules.

It has now become fact based knowledge, that excessive supplementation of alpha-tocopherol depletes your body of other E-complex vitamins, cheating you of their benefits. In fact, when alpha-tocopherol is taken at doses typical of most "vitamin E" supplements, counterbalancing it with the proper ratio, or even an equal amount of the other E vitamin E complex, isn’t enough to prevent this supplement induced deficiency. The excessive alpha-tocopherol still drives out gamma, leaving your levels around 30% below that of a the average, non-supplemented diet. Not only does this lower the level of other E-complex molecules in your body, too much alpha-tocopherol can directly counteract some of the unique effects of the other E vitamin molecules if they exist at all in your diet or supplements. So how much is too much? The “high dose” referred to in the trials was (> 400 IU) and the results were clear: people taking 400 IU or more of alpha-tocopherol per day, actually increase their risk of death.

Clearly, the only way to supplement with any "Vitamin E" is with a properly balanced complete E-Complex pharmaceutical grade supplement... OR NONE AT ALL! You can get a fair amount of naturally balanced complete Vitamin E Complex from a healthy nutrition plan, once you learn how. You don’t need to eat eight pounds of veggies including one of every color, two pounds of mixed nuts and grains, three of fruit, etc… each and every day as seen on Infomercials, or ads for supplements, to remain healthy and out of harms way… let’s be realistic!

With today’s helter skelter North American Lifestyles, it is prudent to take well balanced vitamin and mineral supplements. Before doing so, it is imperative that you develop an understanding of what to look for. When it comes to Vitamin E, better safe than sorry! We have found, based on what we know about the content of the E-Complex molecules found naturally occurring in a balanced healthy diet, there should be at a minimum, two to three times as much gamma-tocopherol as there is alpha-tocopherol, measured in mg. (milligrams) not IU (International Units, the common unit of measurement for certain vitamins). To convert IU’s of alpha-tocopherol to mg., simply multiply the IU measurement by a factor of (0.66), alpha-tocopherol is the only member of the E-Complex family vitamins measured in IU’s. As far as the tocotrienols, you’ll want at least one tenth as much in mg.’s, as the combined total of tocopherols.

" Only Caution to balanced full spectrum Vitamin E Suplementation: Vitamin E has potentially harmful interaction with anticoagulant medications, due to Vitamin E having anti-platelet properties and potential to inhibit vital clot formation (Vitamin E complex may "thin" the blood.). Consult with a physician if you are using any anticoagulants or if you have clotting problems. Many surgeons recommend that the use of Vitamin E supplements be discontinued for up to two weeks prior to and following surgery."

Doc Stuey

Publish This Post

Copyright (H.Brett) 2004

For Diets, Health and Wellness Facts You Can Trust...

Place No Importance On Opinion...

Wow! They lead to sites that boast surreal claims that go beyond the realm of reality... most that can not be substantiated.

This "before and after" just kills me... first of all, the before picture is that of roughly a 400-450 pound individual... the after barely 180-200 pounds at best... the claimed loss of 65 pounds, and going from a 52 waist to 31-32 is not the case is it? It doesn't add up, based on the photos. Further, for the "before" individual to become the "after"... even though I know it is possible to get results like this over time, as I have helped many to do this... the remaining excess skin needs surgical removal in almost all cases... so what's the story? Sorry for the skepticism... but like I said before... this all goes beyond logic... now I am even more intrigued to know the truth behind this claimed discovery?

Please visit, bodyweightloss.com - natural weight loss, this link should take you to a page of before and after photos of some of their success stories... the one that caught my attention at the time of this post, was the 8th one down... pictured is a grossly Obese male roughly in his mid thirties, pictured thankfully dressed!!! in a light blue tee shirt and black pants.
This site claims weight loss of 27 pounds a week as being easily done without drugs, exercise, diets, surgery, etc...

Well, with a completely open mind as is typically my approach... I e-mailed the site owner requesting their cooperation in allowing us to fully evaluate this "miracle of modern science"... as that is what it would be if substantiated! We will keep you posted...

Here is the copy of the exact e-mail we sent them...

Your claims go beyond logic. I have over 30 years, hands on experience in the health, wellness, and fitness industries. The claims you are advertising are typical of the overwhelming BS in the industry. If substantiated, your program would possibly be bar none, the single best discovery of the century. I know every technique ever used to rapidly lose weight... most are not good on any long term basis, and certainly set up the user for rebound as well as other health risks... not to mention the loss of lean tissue and needed fluids. Unless you've discovered a natural way to turn off the brain from defending it's perception of doom and gloom due to starvation, and it's defensive response system of producing that cursed enzyme "Lipoprotein Lipase"... any rapid weight loss system can not be sustained, then maintained. I am intrigued... I would appreciate the opportunity to review your program. If it is for real, I would like to market it to my readers on an affiliate basis. Please advise.

Doc Stuey

For Diets Health and Wellness Facts You Can Trust...

Do Not Click on ANY Links Within ANY Articles Until We Give The OK...

I apologize to our readers for any confusion arising from the deployment of ad word links within our articles. Want to Know Who’s Really to Blame?

You Are Fat! Want to Know Who’s Really to Blame? The Government, our Health and Education Systems. Believe it or not, The Diet Industry… even The Nutritional Supplement Industry can be blamed! The system, our North American Lifestyle, The Dollar… Blame our Parents… after all, it’s their genes we carry, and most FAT people are fat because of genetics right? Well, here’s just a thought… There is a degree of truth to all these statements… a degree… and certainly, you could add dozens more. While you think up everyone you can, let’s say over the next hour, day, week, month, etc… be sure to check that list for the one and only that makes the real difference… “The Mirror”. YES! When was the last time you looked in the mirror? Who did you see? WoW!!! That’s Right! YOU!!!

Unless you are one of the truly unfortunate folks that are Fat due to genetic or other medical reason… It’s Your Fault that You Are FAT, Period! Oh, BTW (By The Way)… Less than 2% of Obese and Overweight individuals fit into the above mentioned category. So, as you are likely part of the 98+% of folks that have created your own dilemma… You Need Help!
You Need Help… so where do you turn? There is so much information available. The Internet, co-workers, friends and family… Everyone knows someone, who knows someone else, that has done the Atkins diet (or Adkins diet), or Weight Watchers diet, the Scarsdale diet, the Zone diet, or some other popular diet program with great results.
How about weight loss supplements? Well Yes, there are plenty of those being sold by reputable companies “In The Know”. You’ve seen the “Before and After” pictures. You’re convinced there are real people getting real results, but… then you’ve heard all those stories of folks dropping dead, and these very supplements being blamed. This must be all very frustrating… almost enough to get you back on the couch with a bag of chips or pretzels and a couple of nice cold beers.
NOT So Fast! There is an answer, and I’m sure you’re starting to realize… “There is No Majic Pill”, that will give you the body of your dreams either. Here is the Secret…

“Knowledge equals the Power to Achieve Any Goal Whatsoever.”

Stop being your own worst enemy. Take a step in the right direction, in fact take two or three…
Learn to make informed decisions when it comes to your health and wellness.
A happier, healthier, leaner, more muscular you, is an achievable, life long goal.
There is way too much misinformation out there. The public has been surrounded with messages that have been neither borne out of research, nor substantiated by long term health benefits. It is time someone made an honest difference… the people nead research proven facts when it comes to their health and overall wellness. We intend to deliver those facts.
If you are going to read a little every day, you may as well be reading something that will result in long term benefit to you.
