The 3 attributes I choose to demonstrate were the imagination of a painter, curiosity of a scientist and the enigma of a magician. All of which were found to be as aspirations when asked to children about their future professions.

G20 Best Design is an exhibition of good design products from 14 countries of the G20 member states. The exhibition is a global festival for outstanding designs held in celebration of the G20 Summit in Korea. 400 pieces of work from 14 countries that represented a common language of mankind as well as valuable cultural assets that must be preserved were exhibited.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to India Design Council for noticing my humble efforts in design and giving me the honor of displaying my works at the event in Seoul.

Sweet Heart - Lover's Chair

Love blooms when two hearts meet. A chair for two...a desire so honest... to be expressed un-selfconsciously.

Sweet Heart is the manifestation of my imagination of a piece of furniture that makes a poetic connection between design and simple gestures in human relationships – like caressing your loved one. A couple can sit together, on top of each others lap. Adjust to a comfortable seat height and lock – unlock the tilt.

The chair’s silhouette just happens to be indicative of the heart shape, the most common and most widely recognized symbol of love.

The chair has been prototyped by my loving wife/co-designer Suhasini Paul.

Clip wins Red Dot Award : Design Concept 2010

Clip is an attempt to re-define a mundane object to breathe in fresh thoughts in the field of design for mass manufacturing: evoking ecological awareness and accountability. Realizing today’s and foreseeing tomorrow’s scenario, it was felt that howsoever people talk about eco-sensitivity, consumption of plastic house-wares would still be quite large enough to deplete our natural resources. One way to reduce consumption is to facilitate prolonged life of the same product. Improved longevity of Clip confronts the challenges of waste reduction and supports a productive economy by conserving the embodied energy that was originally used to manufacture it.

Wind Tree wins Merit at Lite-On Award, Taiwan

Paul & Suhasini were honored with the Merit Award for their concept : Wind Tree - an alternate micro-electricity generator to feed the electrical vampires and thus save electrical loss which amounts to about 25% of our electricity bill.

The number of contestants and entries hit yet another record high, attracting nearly 6,000 emerging and professional designers from Europe, Asia and the United States, with a total of 2,538 entries competing for a total of one million in award prizes. In response to climate change and global trends in environmental change, the theme for this year's Lite-On Award was "Green Evolution: Sailing to the Green Ocean" hoping to inspire designers to merge technology and green design ideas in the creation of a mighty and eco-friendly Green Ocean. Lite-On Award is touted as the Chinese Academy Award for Industrial Design. The awarding ceremony of the 2010 Lite-On Award was held in Taipei.

Innovative Switches and Accessories

GM Modular Pvt. Ltd. is a high quality electrical and electronic equipment manufacturer in India. I was approached way back in 2004 by one of the directors to design and develop a range of switches and accessories. The underlined objective was “consumer insight driven product innovation”.

It started with a thought that anything that is good can be made better and we went on to innovating utility as well as aesthetics.
The switch plate, accessories and other innovative electronic utility products are a manifestation of our imagination backed up with accurate unearthing of latent needs of consumers, transformed with technical soundness and manufacturing capabilities of GM Modular Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai.
Thorough understanding of the product usage environment synthesized with the directional element of asymmetrical forms led to the concept of 90° rotational possibility of the complete switch-plate assembly.

Three designs were shortlisted which went up to the mock up stage after refinement through intermediate rapid prototypes using stereo lithography. Finally the ‘overlap’ design was selected to be taken for mass production.

With the changing times the needs and aspirations of the consumer have also changed a lot. Now, instead of external accessories people prefer accessories fitted with the switch plate itself. This desire gave rise to quite a few new ideas of inbuilt accessories like the alarm clock, mosquito repellent, emergency light and the like. While designing the accessories the modularity as well as the external compatibility has been kept in mind. Ergonomic issues were resolved through innovative mechanical design.
While dealing with electrical accessories some cognitive issues had to be taken care off. The medium dimmers which are presently available in the market, due to the circular shape of the knob, are very difficult for the user to decipher at what stage (speed) is the fan. Only graphical representation is done by the usage of numbers or dots. From a distance these graphical representations are not quite visible.

The idea was to make the speed of the fan visible from a distance, even at night.
Glow in the dark material was used to make a strip which could move in and out with the gradual movement of the circular knob.
Another problem was while replacing the mat from a mosquito repellent. The user was not comfortable pinching out the mat from the hot plate beneath it.

A design was so made in 2 modules which integrated the ON-OFF switch as well as the retrieval of the mat became easy.
Ever given a thought, what we want first when left in the dark? Yes, light!
The emergency lamp is designed to glow all by itself whenever there is a power cut. Moreover, one can pull it out from the switch plate and use it like a torch if needed.

When put back in place, it re-charges itself for a second helping!
The need for self-expression continues as a trend for home furnishings. The one-size-fits-all color and style mentality is a dinosaur of the past. With the continuing demand for unexpected color combinations, we think that the suggested colour palette reflects the diversity of mood and taste in the future. While home as a retreat and safe harbor still resonates for many, there is also the realization that fantasy and fun are equally important. Metallic tones include champagne gold as well as muted golds and silvers, both shiny and delustered. Elegance with traditional touch could be tastefully combined by black current. The white ones with their stylish elegance minimize the presence of the electrical functions on the wall and offer the possibility of choosing cover plates in light colours.
In short, life is busy… these accessories make it easy!

Dare to bare out-of-doors?
See-through blindfold is inspired from the silk/satin love laces which have ruled the boudoir while you try blindfolding your partner to heighten the pleasures of imagination through adult fantasy play.
This time: Peeking is allowed!
I propose a fashion glare which tries to capture the sensuousness of satin folds - the smooth silky flow and the deceptive transparency of lace. It gives a feeling to the onlooker that you are blindfolded and titillates his senses, running him wild.

Blindfold is proposed to be made in photochromic polycarbonate.
A floral print is embedded into the surface layer of the material in a uniform thickness of up to 150 µm. Upon exposure to UV radiation in day light floral patterns become visible, otherwise invisible.

The floral pattern darkens substantially in response to UV light in less than one minute, and then continues to darken very slightly over the next fifteen minutes. It fades back to clear once moved indoors. It is tinted with exotic colors in the bleached state.
