The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) is to raise concerns with the Elections Commissioner over reports that the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province Shivaneshathurai Chandrakanthan has obtained the support of the army to campaign for the Provincial Council elections in the East.

SLMC General Secretary SLMC Hassen Ali told The Sunday Leader that the Elections Commissioner must take note of such incidents.
“I really do not know whether this news is true or not but in the event it is true it is not fair by the other opposition political parties. However I am sure that Pillayan’s people cannot canvass in Muslim areas but may be only in Tamil areas in the province,” Ali said.
He further said described how opposition poling agents were not permitted in the Tamil areas in the province at the 2008 PC elections and added that although the Elections Commissioner too was not happy with what happened on Election Day steps were not taken to cancel the polls.
“None of the opposition poling agents was allowed to go to the polling booths in the Tamil dominated areas. The ballot boxes was stuffed openly and the voter turnout was more than 93 percent. This is why we have requested the Elections Commissioner not to allow this to happen again,” said Ali.
Meanwhile TMVP Spokesperson Azath Moulana refuting the allegations leveled against his party said that TMVP supporters will carry out the canvassing and so there is no need to hire army personnel.
