Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. ~Mark Twain

Never have we been more aware of the freedom in being able to travel. It truly is a gift, a privilege, and an education.

We have all been staying put for the past two years, but Australia will be opening up in 2022! The logistics of travel will be a bit different, but we will be able to welcome international and interstate travelers into Western Australia. So many of us will be looking forward to our next adventure.

It already looks like it’s going to be a busy season for us here at Diggers. We plan to open by Easter weekend, April 15, weather and road permitting. Here’s a bit of an update, in case you are considering a visit.

Horse Riding Holidays: Our Station Based Horse Riding Holidays are starting to fill up, but we still have saddles available on some of the weeks in May and August.

Camping: There’s almost always a camping spot to be found here at Diggers, but we ask that you book ahead to help us operate more smoothly, and so you won’t be disappointed:)

Accommodation: Our bush huts and bunkhouse rooms are already full for the month of July, but we still have some availability in late April, May, June and August.

We want to let everyone who is considering a trip to Digger’s Rest Station, and the Kimberley, in 2022 know that we will be following the advice of the Tourism Council of Western Australia, and the requirements of the West Australian government, requiring all staff, guests and visitors to be fully vaccinated for Covid 19 prior to their arrival at Digger’s Rest Station. We have not taken this decision lightly, but we feel it is necessary for the safety of our community, our workers, our guests and ourselves.

As you may already know, interstate and international travelers will need to be fully vaccinated before coming to Western Australia. We have extended this policy to apply to intrastate travelers as well. We are in the process of becoming an accredited Covid VAXXED business, and will have policies in place to ensure we all abide by these requirements.

Everyone wants to get back to traveling and the freedom of movement again, and we feel this is the best and safest way to make that happen.

We are looking forward to next season, and we hope you can make it out to Diggers!!!

This is our beloved Cat, which is short for Caterpillar because he would bulldoze his way through the thickest of scrub, and plow through creek crossings, always leading the way for the rest of the mob. Cat is now enjoying his twilight years in the home paddock, with daily nosebags and access to hay.

Back in May, we thought he had passed on to greener pastures. We had found his mate Nick with some of our other horses but Cat was nowhere to be seen. Two months later, Cat turned up at our mustering camp 35 kilometres from home! He was struggling out there on his own, but he willingly followed us back to the station when we brought the horses back from the mustering camp. Once we had him here in the house paddocks, we were able to get some weight back on him, and he seems quite content now:)

He is one of those horses that truly stands out from the rest with his willingness, gentle nature, and intelligence.

Thanks for the photo, Sally Dowdell!

If you are an adventurous soul who loves remote places with spectacular landscapes, while still appreciating a good feed, a shower at the end of the day, and a comfortable bed (and with the stars still in view!), then we are your ultimate destination:) and if you also reckon the best way to see new country is on the back of a horse, then Digger’s Rest Station Based Horse Riding Holidays should be at the top of your list!

We hope to see you out here at Diggers in 2022:)

The last time rain fell at Diggers was on March 23, and there have been many 40 and up degree days in between then and now.
We are fortunate in that we do always have a wet season, some better than others, but at least we can be sure that the rains will come. We just have to be patient:) and when it does, the transformations are amazing!

Yet another dry season has come and gone, and this one was just about as extraordinary as the last! Since life is unpredictable, I suppose we should be used to our mercurial borders by now…

The season started off with a bang, and finished with a whisper. In May, we were busy with the Station Based Horse Riding Holidays, and the cattle muster kept us all on our toes for the month of June through the first half of July. The tourism side of things slowed right down with the border closures, so On The Verandah was unable to hold their artists workshops. We also had numerous cancellations on our last three scheduled Station Based Horse Riding Holidays. Fortunately, our diversification paid off, with cattle prices being very good.

Here’s hoping that borders become more stable over the next several months! In the meantime, we make the most of what we can do and where we can go, and do our best to be thankful for this amazing life we are living.

We will be swinging the gate closed on this season on Monday, September 27.

Diggers Rest seems to attract interesting characters, and this year we’ve had some of the best of the best!

Our new found friend Jean added so much to our lives this year. She is truly a multi-skilled woman. Jean took on the cooking with gusto (first time ever that we’ve had a full time cook on staff…other than me:), and quietly accomplished dozens of other tasks in between meal preps. There’s very little this woman can’t do, or figure out how if it’s new to her. To top it off, she always finds time to watch the sunrise and the sunset, a practice we should all follow! And her sense of adventure is second to none. We are hoping to lure her back to Diggers next season.

Another amazing all rounder on our crew this season was Sally. This talented woman takes on any challenge with intelligence and energy. The horses have been so well cared for under her daily attention, and the gardens have also benefitted from her nurturing hand. And talk about sense of adventure, she’s been exploring up in the Cockburn Ranges at every opportunity. Sally is an inspiration in her dedication to whatever she takes on. We will always welcome her back to Diggers!

And our ‘Aussie at heart’ Swiss friend Fabia…we have managed to lure her back for three seasons now. It probably helps that her beloved Doris, a rather special mare, resides here with us:) Fabia helps keep me organized, no easy task, and she always has a welcoming smile for any visitor to Diggers. She has a lovely gentle way with horses, and with people, but she is no pushover either. Another quiet achiever, some things just seem to get done better when she’s around! We’ll keep hoping our borders open again soon, and she can make it back to us next year.

Diggers wouldn’t be able to survive with out the likes of these women, and this is only a mention of all the amazing friends, family, and travelers who have helped us out this season and seasons past.

A huge thanks to all of you!!!
