he Torch is a different BlackBerry than anything you've seen. Its developer, Research in Motion, has clearly put a great deal of thought into the device design, operation, and even its packaging.
This smartphone boasts a touchscreen, optical trackpad, and slide-out QWERTY keyboard giving it a unique form factor. It also features a revamped operating system complete with new browser designed to be more social media centric.
At $200 on AT&T's 3G network, the BlackBerry Torch is designed to be RIM's flagship device.

BUILD & DESIGN
The Torch is a Touchscreen slider with a full keyboard and optical trackpad, a design that Research in Motion has never used before.
Like all of the newest harvest of BlackBerrys, there is plenty of faux chrome finish to go around. Also like the current generation of BlackBerrys, the styling becomes boring after approximately one second of looking at it.
This is RIM's first slider, and the company has done a fairly good job with this design. The sliding mechanism is smooth with the right amount of resistance. But there are a couple of issues: the device lacks a designated touch point to slide open the device, resulting in thumb smudges on the screen, and using the mute/lock rocker button on the top is awkward when the screen is extended.
Despite these minor detractions, RIM's designers did a good job of allocating enough space above the top-row of the keyboard with the slider open, which has been an issue on other sliders.
Overall the Torch feels well built, and is about as heavy as the competition. With the slider closed, it's 4.4 x 2.4 x 0.6 (111 x 62 x 15 mm).
ScreenThe 480x360 3.2-inch Touchscreen is lacking in both size and resolution. It's about par for the course compared to other BlackBerrys, but compared to Android OS devices and the iPhone 4 the quality of the screen seems almost an afterthought. If there were one deal breaker about the Torch, it might be the screen.
The touch aspect is comfortable. It is not as responsive or as smooth as the iPhone 4, but it proves usable for any application. Unlike RIM's failed attempts at touchscreens with the Storm and Storm 2, the device is more responsive when shifting from landscape to portrait, and is otherwise reliable and predictable.
KeyboardsThe portrait-oriented sliding QWERTY keyboard is reminiscent of one on the the BlackBerry Bold 9700 -- it's a joy to use, and has almost no learning curve. Typing speed and accuracy is phenomenal compared to the virtual keyboard of other devices, like the iPhone.
Its virtual keyboard, on the other hand, is less impressive than other devices'. Despite offering interesting customizations such as AZERTY, QWERTY, QWERTZ layouts and predictive, corrective, and direct input modes, the Torch's on-screen keyboard's typing speed and accuracy pales in comparison to the competition. Still this isn't as big a deal as you might think -- beyond the occasional website or email address, I found myself switching the physical keyboard for almost all of my typing.
Other Buttons & Controls
The optical trackpad below the screen works as promised with no surprises or complaints. While some may wonder why it's included at all, I find it enhances productivity and efficiency while using the device. While scrolling through long lists is easier with the touchscreen, quickly and accurately selecting a few characters to copy is made easy via the trackpad. Furthermore with the option of using the keyboard and the trackpad exclusively the Torch suddenly becomes a great reading platform for longer emails or web pages.
The Torch retains the traditional volume buttons and convenience key on its right side, and a mute/lock rocker button on top. There is no left-hand convenience key which is a little frustrating -- how else will BlackBerry nation accidentally trigger the "Say a command" prompt?

PERFORMANCE
One of the things that sets the BlackBerry Torch apart from the others is the new OS 6.0 operating system. This takes the Torch's hardware advances and wraps them in a new user-friendly user interface.
Current BlackBerry users may find some of the menu layouts and options settings to be confusing. To overcome this issue OS 6.0 boasts a search bar that allows users to quickly find what they're looking for. There are a slew of new sounds, and editing ring profiles is easier than ever.
Where the OS really shines is in its interfaces. Users can just as easily manipulate the phone via the keyboard and trackpad as they can the touch screen.
There are now several homescreens that users can swipe between (or toggle between with the trackpad). Tapping a screen will enlarge it and reveal all of its contents.
Wireless and Call QualityRIM has fully equipped this device with what are now basically wireless necessities: 802.11 n/g/b, Bluetooth 2.1 with file transfer profiles, and support for GSM, EDGE, and 3G bands on AT&T in The States.
Another aspect of the iPhone RIM (happily) failed to replicate was the antenna issue plaguing its rival, the iPhone 4. Wireless signal quality was consistent in all environments tested. By now good call quality with balanced sound and plenty of oomph in the speakerphone department has become old hat for RIM. The Torch proudly upholds these qualities.
Browser
The new BlackBerry OS 6.0 web browser is a much faster, more feature laden, and better looking browser than any of its predecessors. With additions such as tabbed browsing, pinch-to-zoom, and faster queries, the browser is arguably the biggest improvement in this new operating system.
I found that although it still occasionally hung while trying to chew through difficult sites, it was a much rarer occurrence than in previous versions.
RIM claims its newest web browser is media rich, but it doesn't really stand up to that claim.
Entertainment
RIM has included a dedicated Media homescreen, revamped the user interface on some of its classics like BrickBreaker, and has added a YouTube shortcut, but otherwise the entertainment options have remained largely unchanged.
With a 4 GB microSD card and headset included, the Torch is definitely easy to put media on and enjoy on the go. Despite this, this is still not a purpose-built media device, so power users will not want to ditch their iPod just yet.
The BlackBerry social feed is a new feature that integrates updates from several social media sources including Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and several messaging clients including BBM. There's an additional option to add RSS feeds which give users one display to see all the things they'd otherwise cruise multiple apps for. A nice addition, but its notification settings should be tweaked to allow fewer interruptions with what some may consider "unimportant" updates (sorry NewsFeed fans!)
ProductivityWith its push email filtering and message-flagging options, RIM is at the top of its game in the email department. The options are so plentiful that going back to email on the iPhone feels like going back to sending paper letters.
BlackBerry OS 6.0 maintains its over-the-air (OTA) contact synchronization via providers such as Google's Gmail.
The standard DataViz DocumentsToGo suite for viewing Microsoft Office Documents is present, and handling file types in attachments is easier than in previous BlackBerrys.
BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and SMS/MMS messages enjoy a revamped user interface, with the former getting a few improved features such as chat-like windows, group messaging and easier attachment options. There's also a group SMS option. Although these features are interesting, their practical application is fairly limited.
CameraThe Blackberry Torch has a 5.0 megapixel camera with flash and video. It doesn't have a way to easily focus pictures, however, which is a shame, as pictures end up seeming like they were taken on a smartphone rather than a 5 megapixel camera.

Battery Life
The Torch manages to get decent battery life out of a relatively small battery. With casual use I was able to get more than one day without having to recharge. As a primary phone however, you will want to charge it every night.
The battery charges via micro-USB located on the left hand side of the device that allows for comfortably charging while talking.

CONCLUSION
If RIM set out to create an iPhone/Android OS competitor, it's probably failed. It's unlikely that someone considering one of those devices would see the BlackBerry Torch and think "this is for me."
What RIM has succeeded in doing however, is creating a BlackBerry that BlackBerry users will want and enjoy. Although it might not gain RIM marketshare, it will definitely aid in retention.
I'm hoping that the next version of this will have better styling, a front facing camera (think video BBM), a bigger and higher resolution screen, and more innovative pairings between the updated operating system and the updated hardware.
As a BlackBerry user who added an iPhone to its arsenal primarily for its gorgeous display, the Torch teases me -- it's good, but it could have been so much better.

Packaging

The AeroCool CoolPanel 3 comes packaged in quite a small container. The product features cover the front of the box along with an image of the product and the product name. The two smaller sides explain the features in seven different languages while one of the longer sides lists the supported card slots. The back of the box gives a great overview of the parts of the device and even lists the short list of specifications.

Once the flip top lid is opened the manual, driver CD and card reader are shown. All of the necessary cables are found underneath the cardboard insert.

Overview

The AeroCool CoolPanel 3 Internal Card Reader is small yet powerful. With a whopping 56-in-1 card reader, 2 USB ports, an eSATA port and HD audio connections it sure leaves the feature list a plenty. In addition to this standard card reader inputs the CoolPanel 3 offers a color LCD which displays up to three fan speeds and three temperature sensors. This LCD screen does allow you to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit and even allows you to set a temperature alarm.

Starting on the left side of the panel there are the two USB ports stacked on top of each other with the eSATA port below them. In the center of the device we have the color LCD display on top of the 56-in-1 card reader (to see which cards are supported see the specifications). On the right side of the panel are two buttons which adjust temperature alarms and can switch between C and F. Below these are the HD microphone and headset inputs.

A side view shows the small size of the device. The plastic siding is just long enough to attach up to four screws, included, to the case. A back view shows us that two sets of cables are already connected to the device; these would be the temperature sensors and fan attachments.

Since there are two USB slots on the panel they have their own dedicated USB cable and the card reader has its own separate single 4-pin connection which be found closer to the middle of the device. I think they would have been better off with a single USB cable that would support the USB slot and the card readers rather than giving the extra cable to attach to the motherboard. The last available connection for this device is the HD/AC97 audio connector found on the left side.

Installation and Usage

Installation is fairly easy for the device, but if you have any problems don't try resorting to the Manual because it's utterly useless. It's easier to install the device, especially if you have other drives near to the panel, if you attach the cables prior to installing it. Once you've got the cables attached just slide it into an empty bay on your case and attach it either via the four screws included with the CoolPanel 3 or your cases screwless attachment. Then attach your fan connectors and wire your temperature sensors to their desired locations.

The cables are labeled so it makes wiring the cables easier and makes it easier to understand once your case is closed.

The usage is pretty self explanatory. The LCD display shows the three fans, with labels, and their fan speeds. If a fan isn't connected or it isn't running the display will show four zeros as the speed. The three temperature sensors are displayed in full degrees and can be switched by pressing down both of the buttons at the same time.

A nice little addition to this LCD display is the audio sensor which can let you know simply how loud your PC is or you can check out the sound levels of your PC whenever you're playing games or music.

In the dark it's easy to spot light bleeding from the LCD panel through the CF slot. While I don't find it a big deal someone else might.

When attaching cards beware that they don't go in completely into the panel, so it probably wouldn't be a good idea to use this panel for Vistas' ReadyBoost or using a card for extended periods of time because you just might brush up against it and break your card.

Testing

In our testing we used two programs: HD Tune 2.55 and SiSoftware's Sandra Lite 2009 SP1. We will be testing both USB and eSATA connection speeds for a 320GB Western Digital Caviar 16MB Cache Hard Drive. Here are the eSATA tests:

The transfer rates were about the same compared to external drives that we've reviewed. Although the SiSoftware eSATA rates were a little lower than expected the USB results were still about average and even higher than normal with the HD Tune results.

Conclusion

The AeroCool CoolPanel 3 is a great multi-function device. Unlike some other panels the CoolPanel 3 offers not only 1, but 2 USB slots, an eSATA port, 56-in-1 card reader and HD audio jacks. The colored LCD display makes it all the better with the display of temperatures, fan speed and noise level. Although it isn't that in depth it still gives a general idea of what's going on inside of your case without having to turn your monitor on.

A Guide To Basic PC Cooling

One of the greatest dangers to your PC is something we all take for granted - Heat! Your office space may be cool enough for you, but is it for your PC?

Desktop PCs and Notebook PCs generate heat that can be damaging to its components. Not just damaging, but heat can actually reduce the performance of your PC - slowing down processing, and causing intermittent errors that can affect your stored data.

Whether you’ve just bought your Desktop or Notebook, or you’re a long-time owner, here are some tips that will help lengthen the life of your precious personal computer.

Read The Manual!

The manufacturer of your PC understands the issues that can affect your PC. They have gone through the testing to understand how and when your PC can fail. That's why, it's important to review the owner’s manual, and follow the manufacturer’s suggestions on how to use, and maintain your computer. Pay special attention to any discussion of cooling, and the placement of the computer.

The Heat Is On

The truth of the matter is, anything that consumes energy generates heat. The power supply, the processor, the graphics card, the hard drives, and all the other components of the computer that require power for it to function generate heat. The amount of heat depends on the device - for example processors and video cards generate HUGE amounts of heat. You have probably noticed at one time or another, the big finned heat-sinks (cooling devices) on some of the components inside your computer. These are there to help preserve the useful life of these devices.

It is true that all personal computers, whether they are Desktop PCs or Notebook PCs, come with a cooling system. However, the standard cooling system that comes with your PC may not ultimately be adequate for the PC you now have. Plus, to work efficiently in protecting your PC from overheating and possible damage, several things have to be considered.

Air Flow

PCs are generally air cooled. This means they need lots of air flowing inside them to carry the heat out of their chassis. To keep the internal airflow at maximum there are a few things to watch out for in your desktop computer:

Keep Cables Neat - the cables inside your computer can become a block to proper airflow, so be sure they are organized so that they do not restrict airflow.
Dust - accumulating dust inside your PC can be deadly. It acts to insulate the devices it covers, keeping heat in, plus dust clogged fans and vents restrict the amount of airflow possible. Keep your PC blown out and dusted regularly.
Fans - periodically check your PC's fans to make sure they are working effectively. Fans can fail, resulting in significant reductions in airflow - in some systems a single fan failure can be enough to damage your PC.
Covers On Tight - your PC's chassis was designed for proper internal airflow across the various components. However, if your PC's enclosure is open, this then dramatically changes the cooling dynamic. It can reduce or eliminate cooling of some components altogether, so make sure the case's cover in on tight.

Upgrades

Have you added new hardware to your PC? A new motherboard, video card, or hard drive? Did you upgrade the cooling at the same time? I bet you did not!

This is the perfect time to look at a cooling or power supply upgrade! The typical PC relies heavily on its power supply's fans for cooling. Also, most original equipment power supplies don't have much margin for additional upgrades, so your power supply may be working at or near 100% capacity. Therefore, the answer is to upgrade the power supply with a model that will not only meet your power needs, but also include more robust cooling. A power supply replacement is generally easy to perform, and can extend you PC's life (especially since old

power supplies are generally what kill most PCs).

PC Placement

We previously mentioned airflow inside the PC, but airflow around the outside is just as important. Blocking the exhaust or intakes can reduce the internal airflow substantially.

Set up your personal computer away from other equipment or appliances that generate heat. Keep your personal computer away from direct sunlight, and make sure that your PC is placed in a well-ventilated area. Placing Desktop PCs and their monitors flat against walls or in enclosed areas should be avoided - leave at least 6 inches of space between the back of the PC and the wall.

Desktop PCs have ventilation fans at the rear of the unit, and depending on its design, may even have ventilation fans on its sides, top, or at the front of the unit. Make sure that these ventilation fans are not blocked in anyway as to constrict the airflow that is needed to cool the internal components.

Some people place their Desktop PCs on the floor. While this may save your desk space, having your PC on the floor also makes it more susceptible to dust (and animal hair if you have pets in the house). It is safer to keep your PC off of the floor to minimize foreign matter from entering the computer case. Avoid placing the Desktop PC near drapes as they may end up blocking the ventilation of the computer case as well.

Notebook PCs should not be placed on soft surfaces, such as a bed, couch, or on top of a pillow which can allow the PC to sink into the soft material blocking the ventilation holes needed to circulate air through the computer. Using your Notebook PC on a hard level surface, such as a table is probably the best way to keep your notebook working within its optimal temperature range.

Maintenance

Always make sure to keep your personal computer clean. Cleaning the exterior is not enough. Make sure you know where all the ventilation intake and exhaust openings are, and make sure that these are not obstructed by objects, dust, dirt, foreign matter, or by any of your personal computer’s components. If you own a Desktop PC, it would be a good idea to clean the inside of the personal computer at least twice a year. Accumulated dust and lint can clog heat sinks and fans found inside the personal computer. This will result in a drop in cooling efficiency which can lead to the personal computer’s components overheating and eventually failing. Heat sinks only work if they are kept clean and are in direct contact with moving air to transfer heat from the heat sink fins to the cooler air around it. You can clean them off using a vacuum cleaner, a blower brush, or a can of compressed air. As a rule, you can use the vacuum on the outside of the PC, and compressed air inside - to minimize the chance of accidental damage to your PC.

If you have a Notebook PC, it would be a good idea to send it in for regular maintenance. A competent computer technician can open up your Notebook PC and make sure that the internal components are kept free of dust and that its fans or heat sinks are clean and functioning to ensure proper air flow, and cooling efficiency. But at a minimum, use compressed air to keep openings clear of dust. Another tip for notebook owners is to buy a supplemental cooling pad - these contain larger cooling fans that blow upward to help keep your laptop cool.

Doing Something About It

Keeping a cool PC isn't luck, it's maintenance to be sure, but it is also being proactive, and that means improving the cooling performance of your system. Some manufacturers do a great job designing their systems for thermal efficiency, but other may cut corners on critical cooling components. The good news is that you can improve your PC's cooling performance very easily.

Heat Sinks

In planning for a cool system, Heat Sinks are the first line of defense. They come in all shapes and sizes, and serve many different components.

CPU Coolers - CPUs dies quickly without a heat sink, but the quality and efficiency of the heat sink can have a big impact on performance and system life. Upgrading your CPU cooler is a real life-saver.

Ultra X-Wind CPU Cooling Fan

RAM Memory Coolers - often overlooked, your RAM memory also produces its share of the heat load of your PC, and cool running RAM can also play a role in maintaining the highest level of performance. Few systems come with efficient RAM coolers, yet they are inexpensive and easy to install.

In addition to the regular air cooled components and PC chassis' ventilation fans, there are other options available. Such options include:

Desktop PCs

When purchasing a new PC, some advanced planning can save you the trouble of dealing with an overheating PC. Choose a Desktop PC case which is large enough to easily accept all the components you wish to install, and still have strong airflow. A good case with enough breathing room will help deal with cooling issues well into the future. However, if you are building a system, buy a case with extra ventilation to be on the safe side.

If you are installing multiple hard drives, do not stack them one on top of the other (if possible). Skip a drive bay to allow air to flow between the hard drives. Keep your cables tidy. Tucking them to the side opens up the airways and lessens air turbulence inside the Desktop PC case increasing airflow. If there is a component that sometimes not given the importance it deserves, that is without doubt the power supply. In the end after is the critical piece that gives power to the computer and is what allows that everything works as it should.

In recent years the power market has grown considerably, with many brands fighting for their slice of the cake, and thanks to this situation today we have more powerful, more stable sources, and above all more efficient.

Today we take a look at one of the company Aerocool, the V12XT in its 700w version. This is a modular design with certificate 80 + bronze, which promises to become an attractive alternative to a proper mix of efficiency, comfort and aesthetics. Veámos in detail.

PACKAGING AND VIEW IN DETAIL

The drive comes in a generous carton with a clear aesthetic influence racing. First we have the logo brand, the logo certificate 80 + bronze and a simple indicative to know which model specifically involved (packaging is the same versions of 600 and 700W and broader in 800 and 1000W versions).

In the side of the packaging is where the bulk of the information on the source, with the distribution of power on one side, and the type of cabling both modular and fixed by the other table.

Open once we can see that the source is put in a bag and is perfectly protected by a thick white foam to avoid possible damage during transport.

Accompanying it we have the power cord and a box cardboard where come all modular cables and the screws to attach to our computer chassis.

The source brings fixed 24-pin connector and the 4-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS.

The exterior has an attractive finish simile that gives you a great looking carbon fiber. This detail will appreciate it above all those who have a box with window.

Front we have connections to distinct, modular cables using colors to visually separate the PCI-Express connections from the rest. All have the added illuminate when the computer is in motion, something that like the exterior finish like certain sector users.

The left side is completely Virgin, while the right we have a sticker come where indicated the different powers of the unit.

Testing we have done has been to measure the stability of the voltages under different loads. In this case we have taken steps at rest, with prime 95 to simulate heavy CPU and with the Unigine Heaven in Dx11 benchmark tasks to simulate its use in games. All tests have been carried out under Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bits.

STABILITY OF VOLTAGES

Results are good, without too much variation when estresamos the computer which is a fairly robust Rails signal. We must remember that it is a source 80 + bronze, and that according to tests by the body that provides certification, its efficiency is situated in figures higher than 85%. Noise, the unit is quite silent thanks to 139 mm that equips fan and really was not annoying none of the tests that we have submitted to the team. It is important to taking the tests made with the team at air data.

CONCLUSION

We believe that Aerocool has taken the right direction with this new V12XT series. We are at a time when concern for energy savings is growing, and the company has been an important by making available to users with a range of power with 80 + bronze certificate.

for volume control it bring a lot easier. for that price with it, it is more than good.

for the bad area it is only usb Powered, not usb speakers, it will take audio and 1 usb port. no mute function.

CONCLUSION

Hyundai S315i done a fairly good job. compare with other USB powered speaker it did a very nice base and sound quality, it was quit impress. for the price around AUD$20 it did very well, even though it is not full USB speaker.

Thanks to this device control effective and easily computer fans adjusting them according to our requirements. The Aerocool panel comes in a compact box cardboard perfectly protected for every eventuality during transport. It has a striking design based on the corporate brand colors and is chaired by a frontal image of the product.

VIEW IN DETAIL

First thing that draws the attention of the panel is its generous dimensions display because it is not very common in this type of device. Also comes with a chrome border that makes further emphasize its size.

The front is finished in black brushed aluminum, which gives it a stronger aesthetics and gives you that extra quality that lack plastic panels. We have in the front screen, an e-SATA port, 2 USB ports, and headphone jacks and microphone.

At the rear is where different connections, and as you can see the most basic connectors already are plugged into the panel. We have 4 probes temperatures, 4 connections for fans and a molex power connector.

The pcb white bottom is where we must connect the cables for the external ports includes. From left to right, USB audio and e-SATA.

OPERATION

With the installed panel and the computer running, we can already see the screen in all its glory. In this model Aerocool unwilling stridence so the data is displayed clearly and its control is really simple and intuitive.

We have corresponding to 4 probes, temperatures in the upper half the logo of the mark, and a lock icon to lock / unlock the pane. We have an icon to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit, two icons to increase or decrease the speed and temperatures, values in the other half and the rpm which fans are moving.

To control the fan speeds enough to put pressure on you want regular, then the value will begin to blink and we can upgrade or downgrade your speed with the icons of + and -. Also if we clicked on any of the temperatures move mode alarm, where by the icons of + and - we can set a maximum temperature of security. The temperature exceeds that the panel number and the fans connected to the panel rotate at maximum speed.

Finally, if you press the logo mark the screen stops illuminate, although the panel is still running. It is highly recommended if we are playing or watching a movie and not want lights which may annoy us.

CONCLUSION

Aerocool has done a good job with this 2000 Touch. It has a generous screen, is very comprehensive and intuitive, easy-to-install, with a finish in perfect aluminium, and also be a good way to handle our computer cooling, also gives us an extra in the form of external connections.

The only objections are their size, which would be excessive for some users, and its regulation, which depending on the fans use we may be short range. Furthermore is a good alternative for those who are looking for something more than a simple rehobus.

INTRODUCTION

Aerocool is known among other things for their creations in the field of peripherals, and within this sector by its striking front. Recently we analyze model Touch 2000, one of its tactile units of two bays, and left us a pleasant impression. So today, and taking advantage of the mark is in the process of renewal of its range of a Bay front, we will look at two new additions, the F4XT and F6XT.

It models a totally atypical design that dispense classic threads for a system of push buttons that will allow us to choose between various positions/settings.

PACKAGING AND VIEW IN DETAIL

The units come in a simple and compact cardboard box, chaired by the corporate colors of the mark, and with a striking design.

An different sides of the packaging outlined us in multiple languages the notable features of each unit and on the back side we have a graphical representation of the product to get a more accurate idea of what we have at hand.

After you open the boxes we have units that come from a small plastic bag and accompanying them with a simple manual instructions and needed to fix them to our computer chassis screws. The box brings a carton to protect mode pieces that prevent the front to suffer any damage during transport.

TESTS AND OPERATION

The system of operation is the same for both front. We have a pushbutton for each connected fan and 3 configurations per channel. Depending on the selected speed will be 1, 2 or 3 light on.

In the F4XT model we also have a push button to turn off lighting something will appreciate users who do not want to have lights in the tower or want to watch a movie without hassle.

We have a middle button with two functions in the F6XT. On the one hand changes among the two available keys and other shut down also the lighting.

The truth is that the operation of these front is more difficult, is completely intuitive and easy. Perhaps it short by not allowing free voltage variation, but will be very useful for those who do not want to eat the head by adjusting threads.

CONCLUSION

After you test the two front with several fans printing has been quite good. Aerocool has released a couple of easy to install and use, with a careful aesthetic front and work seamlessly with any fan. We have 3 rates per channel and in the case of the F4XT even with a pair of USB ports that are always well.

The only defect that have found you is that do not permit a free configuration to vary our whim fan speed. In this regard we believe that mark has designed these front to people that do not need both control, so we see a lesser evil.

In any case we must recommend for those seeking a cheap system to silence fans, simple to use and provides an extra aesthetic to your computer.

Introduction

It is getting to the point that if you own a Hi-Def TV you need or at least want a PC connected to it, and one thing is certain you do not want a full-tower case to be parked next to that TV. So what choice do these user have, they can install their system in a Small Form Factor case and get away from the mass of metal and plastic that normal sits on our desks.

Today we checking out one of the newest additions to the AeroCool lineup that being the M40 Small Form Factor Enclosure. The unit has some features that I have never seen in other enclosure. So come on along as we cover the M40 from top to bottom and everything in between.

Packaging

AeroCool has done a great job of packaging their new M40 SFF case. The shipping carton has a nice picture of the M40 on the side of the carton so that anyone looking at this carton knows exactly what is inside. It has been a while since AeroCool has released any new computer cases, but with the European computer shows behind us now we can expect to see what they have hiding up their sleeves. Having visited AeroCools Taiwanese web site I was able to see a number of new cases that we can only hope will hit the American shore sometime in the very near future.

To insure the safe arrival of the M40 SFF case AeroCool packaged the case in extra thick pieces of Styrofoam and then enclosed the case itself inside a plastic containment bag to eliminate the rub marks that can be caused by direct contact with the Styrofoam.

Around the Outside

If you like cases that have flawless paint schemes then you will love AeroCool's latest addition. The M40 has has an automotive quality black surface and during our examination we found no runs, under or over spray and no signs of orange-pealing. The case is steel construction and the only plastic parts are the two piece bezel and the dual 80mm fan holders at the rear of the case.

The front of the M40 is carefully laid out to present you with an evenly proportioned appearance. You will notice that the lower portion of the front bezel has a series of opening in it to provide a place for air to drawn into the case by 120mm fan at the front of the case.

Starting at the top left corner of the case we have the LED display that will provide you with the temperature of CPU or whatever the temperature probe is attached to. It will also give you a read-out of the fan and hard drive status. Directly below the LCD display we have the oversized power button, testing this button we found that it is recessed slightly to prevent accidental cycling on or off of the power. Next to the Power button you will find the reset button, keeping things nicely arranged they have placed the power LED and the HDD activity light next to these buttons.

Moving to the right of the top bezel we have a pair of stealth drive covers for the pair of 5.25" drive bays located directly behind the doors. We will be installing a pair of DVD-RW drive in these locations. Each of these doors have adjustable eject bottoms on them to make sure everything stays as stealthy as possible.

Directly below the 5.25 drive bays is the 3.5" drive bay which is located on the lower bezel, this would be the perfect location of the card reader to be installed. Located centrally on the bottom bezel are the four USB 2.0 connectors along with the Headphone and Microphone connector ports.

The rear of the M40 has the standard opening for the power supply, you also have an opening for an 80mm fan and directly below it you can see the dual 80mm mounting bracket. There are a total of 4 I/O slot which means that you will have room for a video card a WiFi card if needed and perhaps a TV Tuner card. Lastly the opening for the I/O shield that is specific to the board you will be installing.

A Look Inside

If you remember from the beginning of the review when we stated that the AeroCool M40 has a a split bezel. If you look closely at the pictures directly below you can see where the top half of the case hinges over opening up the lower portion of the case for easy access to install the motherboard, video and accessory cards.

To release the top half of the case from the lower unit one must unscrew a thumbscrew that is centrally located in between the two latches that keep the two halves snuggly together. In the event that you wish to completely separate the two pieces from each other you can remove a single screw to remove the rod that holds the two halves together. Of all the Small Form Factor cases we have reviewed this means of separating the top from the bottom of the case is the easiest means to install all of the required components.

What you see here is the 3.5" drive bay that can be removed to make installing the power supply easier, remember the power supply must not exceed 140mm in lengths. The drive cage is held in place by a simple machine screw and then by pressing the latch the drive bay can be lifted from the side-rail of the case.

It should be noted that there are a number of opening on bottom of the case to make cable management far easer. You will be running power cable to your hard drives and optical drives along with fans we are going to add to the case. You can look at the photo on the right and see where the top half folds over.

Looking at the rear of the M40 you can see the two 80mm fan mounting points. To install the the mounting bracket has to be removed and then you add the two 80mm fan to the holder, what keeps the fans in place are the two screws you place on the back-side of each of the fan bracket. You do this to both fans and then re-attach the fan bracket to the case.

If you are like me and still install a floppy drive just for flashing BIOS, the M40 has a place for you to install it. Also you can get a nice view of the 120mm fan that resides at the front of the case.

The AeroCool has only one small quirk that one must deal with building his or her system and that is the fact that you have to be careful about which power supply you have or purchase. Other wise it will not fit correctly and then you will have issue installing your hard drives. Other than that you have a solid case that does what is asked of it and in return gives you a very arractive case for you to admire all for less than $99.00 AUD.

Aerocool is a quility Computer case band. it have 2 line Classical and Performances Gaming System(PGS). same as what its name, it made computer max cool in lowest noise. Altought is is not as famous as Coolermaster etc banded in Australia, it still newbie, it has bring a similar or even better preformance. no wonder it got huge award in Taiwan and USA.
