Photography BLOG has reviewed the new Nikon Coolpix S640 - the 12 megapixel camera features ultra fast focus and start up time, wide angle 5x optical zoom lens (28mm - 140mm), optical image stabilisation, HD video, 2cm macro mode, a 2.7" screen, and USB charging. It will be available in five different colours: black, white, silver, pink, red, for £199.

"Nikon are pushing the speed of the S640, and it certainly doesn't disappoint in this regard. Focusing is on a par with most entry-level DSLRs, quickly locking onto the subject without too many misses. The S640 also bursts into life very quickly, although it's best to leave the camera turned on to avoid that puzzling 5 second "freeze". Other features are a little more mundane, with the versatile 5x optical zoom the pick of the bunch."

"But when I flicked the little projector button this time—it's a dedicated switch on top, next to the projector's manual focus slider—I was stunned. It looked fine. I shut the windows. I backed up, stretching the image to about 40 inches. Now it looked great. This dinky little projector, and hacky and ridiculous as it looks and sounds, is legitimately useful."

Bigshot Digital Camera Kit for Kids

BigShotCamera.org has made a new prototype digital camera for kids - it's available in multiple colours, and is designed to be built and used by kids. The Bigshot camera has an LED flash, wind up power charging, and a rotating lens that allows normal, panoramic and 3D photos! (shown below) Although designed for kids, I'm sure it would appeal to adults, if it were available.

"A camera designed for kids can be much more than just a toy: it can serve as a powerful educational medium. We believe that such an educational camera must have a radically different design from that of a typical consumer camera. (a) It should be designed as a kit for assembly by students. The assembly process should not only demystify the workings of the camera, but also expose students to various science and engineering concepts. "The camera's 10MP sensor is one of the largest found in an SPS sized camera, with a pixel density of 23 MP/cm². That's half that of competing cameras, and it goes a long way toward improving image quality, especially anything above base ISO. To top it all off the camera's normal top sensitivity setting goes up to ISO 3200. There's also a special "Low Light" mode with sensitivity up to 12,500, if you can believe it."

It appears as though HP are still selling HP branded cameras, with Amazon UK selling the new HP CA350 - for only £69 (link fixed) - bundled with case, batteries, charger, and 4gb SDHC memory card. The camera features a 10.3 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom lens, 2.7" screen, ISO3200, and smile, blink and face detection. The HP CB350 is also available, and features a 12 megapixel sensor.

Ricoh GXR System Announced

Ricoh has announced the new Ricoh GXR interchangeable unit camera system - the body accepts lens/sensor units with a 12.3mp CMOS sensor, 50mm f2.5 macro lens unit available as one option, and another 10mp CCD sensor, 24-72mm zoom lens unit also available. Future units are planned, and can be changed with the metal body staying the same - the body features a 3" 920k pixel screen, SDHC card support, DNG support, manual mode, function buttons, ISO3200, full press snap, digital level meter, and dynamic range expansion. The body will be available for £419, 12.3mp 50mm Macro lens unit £600, 10mp 24-72mm zoom lens unit £330 and will be available in December.

Gizmodo has reviewed the new Canon Powershot G11 - it features a wide angle 5x optical zoom lens (28 - 140mm), with optical image stabilisation, 2.8" twist screen with 461k pixels, 10 megapixel sensor, 1cm macro, VGA 30fps video, ISO3200. The 10 megapixel sensor and new DIGIC 4 processor allows better low light performance with lower noise. The G11 is available priced at £433.

"So, there are two ways to look at the G11: It's an amazing street camera. More discreet than a DSLR, but more powerful than a run-of-the-mill point-and-shoot. You can't stuff it in your jeans pocket, but that's fine, because you want to sling it over your shoulder anyways. The other way is that you can buy a more versatile entry-level DSLR that's not much larger for around the same price, especially if you step back a generation or so."

Olympus PEN E-P2 M43 DSLR Announced

Olympus has announced the new Olympus PEN E-P2 - an update to the E-P1 (12.3mp, 3" live view, anti-shake sensor, 4fps) - it features a new expansion port supporting a new electronic viewfinder (VF-2, 1.44m pixels), audio input option, new art filters (Diorama / miniature and Cross process), i-Enhance, improved AF with AF-tracking, and a new body colour (silver, white and black). Movie mode is also enhanced with adjustable shutter and aperture settings. The camera will be available with 14-42mm kit lens and viewfinder for £850 Dec 2009 / Jan 2010.

Two new lenses announced: Olympus has also announced two new Micro Four Thirds lenses: M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9-18mm F4.0-5.6 super wide-angle zoom lens (14-36mm 35mm equivalent), and M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-150mm F4.0-5.6 high-power telephoto zoom lens (28-300mm 35mm equivalent), both should be available in the first half of 2010.
