Beauty Shoot for "Citizen K" Magazine "How Did I Do It?"

Recently, I received an e-mail from someone who saw my image on my introduction page of my blog, asking "...how did you do it?" I will not include what he speculated, which was actually quite close.

For those of you wishing to participate, I would like you to tell me, what you think I did. I will eventually tell you all the technique I employed for this particular beauty story shot for "Citizen K International".

So, go ahead and tell me what your impressions are. Post your answer on the Forum and on my Blog. That way, everyone who has participated can see all of the responses.

Thanks

I see posts recommending to turn the 'optical stabilizer' and 'pre AF' settings OFF on the TZ7, in order to improve image quality when using a tripod, for example. I'm not sure how these two degrade quality though - anyone knows?

I just got ahold of a Tokina 100-300/4, and have been very pleased with it, but it does some strange things occasionally, and I don't have the instruction manual for it. (If you know where I could download the manual for it, I'd appreciate the link. It's the one with the red ring and the clip-on lens hood.)

Ocassionally, I somehow mistakenly rotate the aperture ring, and the camera settings go haywire. The other lenses I have (Nikon 85/1.8 and 50/1.8) have a Minimum Aperture Lock Lever that keeps the aperture ring from rotating. This lens has a small switch that seems like it should do the same thing, but it doesn't. In fact, it doesn't seem to have any function at all except to expose the green paint below it.

I'd be pleased if someone could give me an idea as to what's going on, how to fix it, and what that switch is for.

I understand that the former has more mega pixels while G11 is good has low light photos and has articulated screen... But my main requirement is picture quality.. I'll compromise anything but picture quality mostly day pics.... I'll also capture landscape shots, group family photos.... Sigma Dp1/Dp2 maybe good too but we don't have them in India...

Hi All,

After about a week being laid up with and inflamed Achilles tendon, I decided to take a walk at the River Trails Nature Center. I took a lot of shots of dead foliage and other stuff while on the trail, but nothing really worth posting, so I hung out by the bird feeders to see who might show up.

It was late afternoon, but the light was pretty good, so I attached the FA*300/4.5+ F 1.7x AFA and stood around, letting the birds get used to me being there. All of these but the last were at 510mm and handheld, so they're not as sharp as they could have been.

I spotted about 8 Downies, but only two got close enough. I totally blew the exposure on this male, but was able to do pretty well with the PP.

This female was almost too close!

There always seem to be Nuthatches around!

. . . and Chickadees

This male Cardinal wouldn't let me get too close.

There were a lot of Goldfinches, and they pretty much ignored my presence, but this young male posed very nicely.

Then, all of a sudden, they all disappeared! It took a while, but I spotted the source of their concern about 100 ft away, and 70 ft up.

. . . but for some reason, the little guy to the right wasn't overly intimidated.

This last little guy is a Screech Owl. It's a captive -- blind in one eye -- and I was very surprised that the grid of the cage didnt' show up at all. This isn't a great shot -- handheld at 1/50 with the FA*300, but the bird is so cool looking. . .

I usually hang it up for birding in Sept -- maybe I should extend my "season" a bit longer. . .

Scott

This was the crown jewel of my photo outing today. I have never been able to get any decent shots of an owl. Well, today was pay day. As I was driving around the refuge I spotted this Great Horned Owl sitting in a Willow tree facing the road and there were no obstruction to my view. I ripped off about 100 shots at various settings and here are some of the best.
The cloud formation is situated over Frank Slide which is found in the Crowsnest Pass, 2.5 hours south of Calgary, Alberta. Half the mountain gave way and covered the mining town of Frank in the early 1900's.

Just upgraded to a D4 after a lifetime of point'n'shoots. Love it. But just noticed a problem.

I was shooting in lowish light without flash (I was in a museum, which didn't allow flash photography). Camera was configured on "P" (per ken rockwell's recco). I held the camera steadily, I thought. I locked focus right on the subject. And I got off a good shot, I thought. Things looked great on the LCD. But then I got home and viewed on a computer, and they are both completely out of focus!

So one small question and one large one:

1. (small) Where did I go wrong in these shots? Just need a steadier hand?

2. (large)If shots look sharp on the LCD and they look out of focus later.....how do I EVER know what's in focus? If I'd known, I'd have reshot!
