Follow-up your Pending E-mails in Gmail

What I have done is
created an email newsletter that arrives every morning and contains a
list of 10 messages, picked randomly from the entire pool of messages
that are marked with a star in Gmail.

This daily email works like a
gentle nudge to act and also alerts me of messages that have been
pending for too long. Here’s how you can set up one for your own Gmail
account.

Copy this Google Sheet to your Google Drive.

Open the sheet and a new Gmail option will appear in the menu bar. Choose Initialize and grant access.

Now choose Gmail -> Install to activate the script that will send you a daily newsletter. Close the Google sheet.

If you wish to stop receiving the email reminder anytime, open the same Google Sheet and choose Uninstall from the Gmail menu.

A little-known Indian Railways website provides the platform numbers of
various trains travelling to or out of Delhi stations in real time.
The Delhi division of Indian Railways maintains a one-page website
that offers the current status of trains arriving or departing from the
Old Delhi, New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railways stations.

The charts update automatically and is an attempt to bring the live on-station charts online.

What is my Train’s Platform Number?

This nameless website, hosted at 122.252.248.147,
is slow and not pretty but it offers one bit of information that you
can otherwise get only after calling the railway station – it tells you
the exact platform number on which your train will arrive (or depart
from).
You know the kind of panic and chaos that happens when the
platform number of a train is changed at the last moment (not an
infrequent phenomenon) and the live information available on this little
website will hopefully help you plan a little better.
Unfortunately, the site only has information for trains arriving in or out of Delhi.

Learn how to hide private files and folders on your computer using free
tools. Maybe you don’t want mom to see any of the stuff you downloaded
from the Internet.
You may want to hide some files and folders on your computer for
various reasons. Maybe you don’t want mom to accidentally stumble upon
all the stuff that you have downloaded from the Internet. Or you share
the home computer with an inquisitive brother and would not like him to
view your private files. Or maybe it’s your work computer and you are
worried that the system administrator may remotely access your files.

Hide your Data from Prying Eyes
Here are some ways to hide your data on the computer from other people:

Put your Sensitive Files in the Cloud

The
easiest approach would be that you use a USB Flash Drive to store your
confidential files and not the computer’s hard disk. USB disks are
inexpensive – you can get a 16 GB disk for less than $10 – and some
are so thin that they will easily fit in your wallet like a credit card.
The next option is that instead of storing the files on a physical disk, you upload them online to places like Google Docs (1 GB), Windows SkyDrive (25 GB) or Box
(5 GB). Dropbox is another good option for online file storage but
because the service synchronizes files automatically with your hard
drive, you may want to avoid it on a common computer.

You
can also use your web email accounts to store files – attach files to
a messages and email it to yourself. The maximum size of files that you
attach to an email message in Hotmail is 10 MB while the limit is 25 MB
in the case of Gmail.
If you are planning to store EXEs or other
prohibited file types in your mailbox, make sure that you change the
file extension before attaching as the Gmail scanner will otherwise reject your message.

Hide Files inside Private (Invisible) Folders

If
you wish to store your confidential files on the computer’s hard disk
itself and not in the cloud, you have several options as well.
You can put all the secret files that you want to hide in one folder and then use a utility like My Lockbox
to make that folder invisible on your hard disk. Once you hide a
folder, it won’t appear in Windows Explorer and the only way to access
the contents of that protected folder will be through My Lockbox.
The
free edition of My Lockbox can lock one folder but if you would wish to
hide multiple files or folders on your hard disk, use the free Winmend
utility. Here you have the option to hide folders as well as individual
files and someone will have to know your password to read, edit or
erase any of these hidden files and folders.

Hide Files and Folders by Camouflage

Your
curious friend is less likely to open a folder that resembles the
Recycle Bin and even if he does, the real contents of that folder won’t
be revealed.
That’s the logic behind Disguise Folders,
a free Windows utility that you can use to easily disguises any folder
as a system folder – like the Control Panel, Recycle Bin or even the
Fonts folder. When you open any of these “disguised” folders inside
Windows Explorer, they’ll open the folder corresponding to their
appearance but if you open the same folder through Disguise Folders, it
will reveal the actual content of that folder.

Hide Files using the Steganography Technique

The
other option to hide files and folder on your computer is steganography
  – it’s like embedding documents, images, and other files into another
unsuspecting file – like your kid’s photograph.
The idea is
that you can embed your private files into another file which could be a
JPEG image or an MP3 audio file. If you wish to hide an entire folder
into another file, just compress into a zip file. When someone
double-clicks these “container” files, the image or MP3 will open in the
default media player but internally, they are hold all your private
files.

You can hide files inside regular MP3s or JPG images using the simple copy command or make use of this free utility called Our Secret.
It work like this. You pick a carrier file – it could be a JPEG image
or an audio file – and then select one or more private files that you
want to hide inside the carrier file. The next step is optional but you
can also encrypt the contained files with a password.
Your private
files will be secretly bundled inside the carrier JPEG (or MP3) and
only when you re-open this carrier file inside Our Secret, the hidden
files will be decoded. If you use the DOS copy command to hide the files
inside another image, the contained files can be extracted using any Winzip like utility without requiring any special program.

The Most Secure Way of Hiding Files and Folders

While
the above utilities do a decent job of hiding your files and folders on
your computer, they aren’t the most secure choices available as they
lack encryption. If you are really serious about protecting your files
from snoopers and hackers, you should use a powerful encryption software
like TrueCrypt or SafeHouse Explorer (I find the latter more
user-friendly).
Once you launch SafeHouse, it creates a hidden
storage area (or an encrypted volume) on your hard disk to hold all your
private files and folders. The size of this volume can be adjusted
based on your requirements. You can access this virtual drive just like
any other drive inside Windows Explorer but the drive and the folders
inside are completely invisible until you enter your password inside
SafeHouse.

You know how to clear the history of websites that you’ve visited
inside Internet Explorer but what do you when some previously visited
web addresses still show up in IE’s address bar.
You have cleared your IE history but some previously visited sites
still show up in the address-bar of your browser. If you’ve got a
similar problem, here’s a solution.

Clear the history of visited websites in IEThe
more recent versions of Internet Explorer (IE7 and IE8) feature a
pretty “smart” address bar. You type some word in the address bar and it
will immediately show a list of matching web addresses that are in your
browser’s history cache.
The auto-suggest feature in the address
bar is a huge time-saver but a a privacy risk as well especially when
you share the same computer with other family members.
Since you
don’t want mom to know what searches you are performing on Google or
what websites you are visiting, Microsoft added a handy “Delete Browsing
History” option in Internet Explorer that will completely erase all
your tracks with a click.

Why IE won’t delete my browser history

The only problem
(see video) is that even if you clear the IE history and your Temporary
Internet files folder, some of the previously visited website URLs may
still show up in the address bar drop-down.

I have tried almost every possible method and that includes resetting
the IE browser to factory defaults, removing the registry entries,
running CCleaner to delete the stubborn index.dat, clearing the Temp
folders manually, disabling add-ons (IE in Safe Mode) but,
unfortunately, none of them worked.
Some previously visited
websites continued to show up in the address bar and I was not the only
one struggling with this strange problem. A Microsoft support engineer
suggested running Windows after a “clean boot” that will load Windows
with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can know
if another background program is preventing IE from deleting the
browser’s history and cache.

Luckily, the fix is simple and has actually nothing to do with IE’s web history.

The
address bar in Internet Explorer is integrated with Windows Desktop
search by default so even if you clear the IE history, the web entries
that are stored in Windows search index will still show-up in the
address bar. These entries appear in the same “History” group and hence
users (myself included) confuse it with IE’s history.
To prevent
web history items Windows Search from completely showing up in the IE
address bar, go to Tools – > Internet Options – > Content – >
AutoComplete and delete the option that says “Use Windows Search for
better results.”

It is now possible to completely remove chat from your Gmail mailbox. The disable option is available for Google Apps as well.
If you are like me who uses Gmail for emails but not for chatting,
there’s a simple setting that will help you completely remove (and not
just hide) the chat box from your Gmail mailbox.

Go to your Gmail
Settings page, switch to the Chat tab, choose “Chat Off” and click the
“Save Changes” button. Alternatively, you may use this link to directly access your Gmail Chat settings page. You can re-enable chat in your Gmail by using the “Chat On” option.

This
setting to disable chat may have been available in regular Gmail
accounts for some time (am not too sure) but it was only recently added
to Gmail for Google Apps accounts.

You could be staying in a country like US, UK or India but may not be
able to watch every video on YouTube – that’s because the content
owners have allowed access to that video only from certain countries or
geographic regions.

If your computer’s IP address falls outside that geographic region, YouTube will display an error saying “This video is not available in your country” – this message has nothing to do with censorship, it’s the owner of the video clip who could be limiting access.
YouTube Filters in Action
For
instance, a video uploaded to YouTube by Warner Brothers or Sony
Entertainment may not be available outside US. Similarly, BBC videos on
YouTube can only be watched from UK.
BBC has mentioned the reason
behind region filtering on their official BBC Channel – “Because of the
way that the BBC is funded in the UK through the license fee, we cannot
make videos available outside of the UK”. Similarly the Olympic Games
channel on YouTube is blocked in countries like US.
How to bypass YouTube Region Filtering ?
YouTube
uses your computer IP address to determine your physical location /
country. In order to bypass these country-specific restrictions on
YouTube, try this trick:
If the URL of the YouTube video is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEwD36Dk1jw – just replace the /watch?v=
part with /v so your new URL becomes
http://www.youtube.com/v/yEwD36Dk1jw.
Alternatively, you may download the YouTube video through
a proxy and watch it offline. The other trick is that you type the
YouTube video URL inside Google Translate and use this a free Google Proxy Server.

During Travelling or some other places when our mobile phone battery discharged & we need to make an urgent call. charging of Mobile required but we forget our charger at home. in such situations we generally get charged our devices with Common charging stations.

if you are at Airports or in a Shopping Mall , it is not a Big problem because these places have there own Multiple charging connectorswhich can charge so many different phones simultaneously. such charging stations looks convenient but carry Risk to some extent.

Recent reports from security researchers warned that public charging places may be configured to upload Malware , Virus on Phone or some time data can be download during charging of device.

How to keep safe our Mobile device with all above happening :

Basically there are two ways to charge our phone battery. first , you can use a direct cable which is plugged directly in Power Socket or Second , with using of USB based chargers which draws power from PC. in second options , Mobile charging may be on Risk as all the mobile data are accessible by PC admin who is not visible to us.

To Avoid this , just remeber to Power off Mobile device completely before plugged in for charging & you will be Safe.

The mobile charging stations available at the Airports are safe but same can not be considered for all public charging stations.

When it is required for immediate charging & if you have no other option then Don't Forget to Turn-Off the phone.

There are many window based phones are available in market these days. one can choice as per their requirement as whether they want good Camera , powerful processor or Best Audio system.
I have personally used Nokia Lumina 920 and HTC 8X for almost last 15 days & experienced following:

Let us first start with Nokia Lumina 920 ,very attractive in look wise , light weight appx 185 gms , 4.5" wide screen which is bright & easily readable even in high lights. The additional features which makes its more attractive is 8.7 Mega Pixel camera which is capable to capture shots even in low lights & works perfectly even in situations where hands are not steady like in Moving cars. overall experience was nice & enjoying the rich features of device.

As concern with , HTC 8X like others high end mobile phones , it has power ful processor. contains screen size of 4.3" , light & Thin as compare to Nokia Lumina 920. Camera is more powerful then Lumina 920, audio quality is much better then Lumina 920. in speaker mode sound quality & clarity is excellent.

Overall , these were our personal experience but before making any choice just try to play with your favorite device for some time & then decide.

<ins style="border: none; display: inline-table; height: 90px; margin: 0; padding: 0; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 728px;"></ins>Currently, Facebook security and privacy settings only allow those users to Send Private Messages Directly into Facebook Inbox who are Friends of Each Other’s and no other person is allow to send private messages to any non-friend or unknown profiles inbox, if any Facebook profile has set their profile security and privacy settings with the filtration to "Strict" than Facebook Message Button won't
appeared into his/her profile because with the setting of "Strict Filtering" for messages into Facebook Profiles, No Non-Friend or Unknown Facebook User is allowed to see the Message Button on any Facebook Profile and also he doesn't allowed to send private messages to any Facebook profile but What if i tell you that there's a security loophole in Facebook which allow Facebook users to Send Free Private Messages Directly into Facebook Inbox to Any Non-Friend or Unknown Profile/Users and also it doesn't required Message button to be appeared on any Facebook profile.

Generally, Facebook's Messaging System allow you to send a message to any Facebook Contact that's not in your friend-list but when you send message to any non-friend user it will go to their "Other" folder instead of their Inbox because it prevents users from getting spammed but with the "Strict Filtering" privacy settings you can't even send messages to any Facebook Contact that's not in your friend-list but now you don't need to worry more because we are going to share a Facebook Trick through which Any Facebook users can Send Free Private Messages Directly into Facebook Inbox to Any Non-Friend or Unknown Profiles/Users even if they set their message filtering to 'Strict' or if there's "No Message Button" appears on Facebook Profiles. The fonts you use in your PowerPoint slides do play a role in making
your presentations successful. The typeface should be readable and font
size should be large enough so that people seated at the back have no
problem reading the text.

Here’s some useful advice from
presentation gurus on selecting the right fonts (font family + size) for
your PowerPoint (or Keynote) presentations:
Guy Kawasaki: Guy says that your PowerPoint presentation slides should contain no font smaller than thirty points or just find out the age of the oldest person in your audience and divide it by two. That’s your optimal font size.
“Force
yourself to use no font smaller than thirty points. I guarantee it will
make your presentations better because it requires you to find the most
salient points and to know how to explain them well.”
Seth Godin: Seth recommends picking up a font other than Arial for presentations because it is too common and overused.
“Headline
fonts ought to be decorative but not ornate. Ornate looks cool on a
font menu, but rarely pays off in heavy use… The right font becomes
your handwriting.”
[Update] You can find some impressive typefaces at Google Web Fonts and they are free.Scott Hanselman: Scott, a great presenter and geek, recommends Lucida Console font, 14 to 18pt in bold for PowerPoint presentations.
“This [Lucida Console] is the most readable, mono-spaced font out there.
Courier of any flavor or Arial (or any other proportionally spaced
font) is NOT appropriate for code demonstrations, period, full stop. ”
Garr Reynolds:
The world’s best know presentation expert says that san-serif fonts are
generally best for PowerPoint presentations, but try to avoid the ubiquitous Helvetica.
“Use
the same font set throughout your entire slide presentation, and use no
more than two complementary fonts (e.g., Arial and Arial Bold). Serif
font are said to be easier to read at small point sizes, but for on
screen presentations the serifs tend to get lost due to the relatively
low resolution of projectors.”
If you are looking for specific
font recommendations, check the following slide deck – it recommends
Lobster Two, Bebas Neue, Glode, Korolev and Cantarell.

You can download and install Google Fonts on your computer for writing Office documents.
Google Fonts is an absolutely awesome collection of web fonts that you may use in your HTML web pages without any restrictions.

These
fonts not only look more beautiful than the common typefaces like Arial
and Verdana but they are more readable as well since the fonts have
been designed specifically for the web. Also, all Google web fonts are
offered under the Open Font License meaning you may use them even in commercial projects without having to worry about licensing issues.
Google
Fonts are hosted on google.com and all you need to do is include a few
lines of CSS (or JavaScript) to embed one or more of these fonts in your
web pages.

Use Google Fonts on your Computer

Other than websites, you may also use Google fonts in your Office documents, Photoshop designs or any other computer program.
There’s
no trick involved here. Because all Google fonts are open source, you
are free to download and install them on to your local computer. Once
the fonts are installed, you may use them in documents just like any
other standard font.

How to Download Google Fonts?

There are two ways to download Google Fonts to your computer.
If you would like to have a copy of all the Google fonts locally, simply go to googlecode.com
and download the entire fonts directory using leeching tools like
HTTrack or Wget. The entire collection weighs around 700 MB and may
therefore take a while to download depending on your Internet
connection.
The other recommended approach is selective download. Open the Google Fonts directory,
pick your favorite typefaces (or fonts) and add them to a collection.
Once you have collected the desired fonts, click the “Download your
Collection” link at the top and you’ll get a zip file containing all the
requested fonts in TTF format. Here’s a quick demo:

Just
unzip the collection and drag the individual TTF files to your fonts
folder. Now you can use the fonts in Office or any other application on
your computer.
A word of caution though. If you create a
presentation with Google Fonts and send it to someone else, they may not
have the same fonts installed on their computer and thus the
presentation will look very different from the original.
Google Fonts are open source so you can either attach a copy of the fonts with the presentation itself or better still, simply embed the fonts in the document before sending one.

Windows 8 Installation Guides :

step-by-step guides to install Windows 8 on your primary computer, or as a
dual-boot alongside an older version of Windows or inside a Mac :

If you haven’t tried Windows 8
yet, you should consider doing that now because Windows 8 looks fresh,
beautiful and definitely brings that “wow” effect. It’s a beta version
but after using it for about a day, I found it stable though the new UI
might involve a bit of learning curve.

The best part is that
setting up Windows 8 is extremely easy and the installation procedure
won’t take more than 15-20 minutes. Should you be interested, I have
written several detailed guides that will walk you through the
installation steps in either of the above scenarios – pick one that best
fits your workflow and get going.
Windows 8 is finally here. I just upgraded my Windows 7 desktop to Windows 8 and the process couldn’t be smoother.

All
the existing software programs work just fine in Windows 8 and the
built-in Windows Store offers a plethora of new full-screen “apps” to
choose from. Desktop search is so much better in Windows 8, the UI feels
more snappy and the system will boot faster. You don’t need to install a
separate anti-virus program as Windows Defender is already included in Windows 8.
If
you haven’t played with the Windows 8 beta versions earlier, it may
take a day or two to get comfortable with the new layout but overall,
Windows 8 is a must-have upgrade.

Upgrading to Windows 8 – Step by Step

If you are also planning to make the switch to Windows 8 this weekend, here are 3 things you would need:

A
Windows machine running Windows 7, Vista and Windows XP. It doesn’t
matter if you have computer is running Windows XP Premium or Windows 7
Home Basic.

A valid credit card or a PayPal account to pay the
upgrade fee – you will be required to pay $39.99 for the Windows 8
Professional edition.

An internet connection for downloading the
Windows 8 installer (2.05 GB). You may also order the Windows 8
installer on a DVD though it may not be necessary as it is quite easy to
create your own Windows 8 DVD.

Please
note that you are opting for an “upgrade” so it will overwrite your
existing copy of Windows and there’s no way you can uninstall Windows 8
to switch to the previous Windows installation.
Also, your
existing software programs will only be preserved if you are moving from
Windows 7 to Windows 8. If your current PC is running Windows XP or
Vista, all your files and data will be preserved but you will have to
reinstall the software apps after upgrading to Windows 8.
Ready? Here’s how may upgrade your computer to Windows 8.
First download and run the Upgrade Assistant program.
This will essentially perform a few checks on your computer and will
also suggest a list of software programs / hardware devices that may not
be compatible with Windows 8.

Next
you need to order your Windows 8 upgrade pack right inside the
installation wizard. Choose the “Checkout” option, enter your Credit
Card details and the next screen will show your Windows 8 product key
that you may need at the time of installation. You don’t have to write
then down on paper and Microsoft will also send a receipt of your order
and the Windows serial number to your email address.
Important:
What you are buying is the upgrade license that will only work on an
existing Windows machine. You cannot use this Windows 8 license on a new
machine that you could be building from scratch. If you wish to install
Windows 8 from scratch on a new hard disk, you need the System Builder that may not be available at all locations.

The
upgrade assistant will now download the Windows 8 installer files to
your computer. This process may take a while since it will require the
transfer of ~2 GB of data from Microsoft servers to your disk.
Tip:
The Windows 8 installer files are stored in the C:\ESD\Windows\Sources
folder – it’s hidden so you may not find it inside Windows Explorer.

Once
the installer files have been downloaded, you can continue with the
installation or you may pick the second option that says – “Install by
creating media.” Here you can save the Windows 8 installer files in a
single ISO file and then, from the wizard itself, burn the ISO image
into a bootable DVD. This may come handy later when you want to repair
or reinstall Windows 8 later but have deleted the installer from the
disk to free up disk space.

Once the DVD is ready, double-click the Windows Setup shortcut (you’ll find it on your desktop) to run the setup again.
You
can either do a clean install and choose “Nothing” or use the “Windows
settings, personal files and apps” option to preserve your files as well
as programs (recommended). Also, if you choose “Nothing,” your
personal files (anything saved inside the User folder and on the
desktop) will be moved to a windows.old folder.
Choose the first “Install Now” option and Windows 8 will finish installing itself. Simple!

If your using Windows computer is running out of disk space, here are
few steps you should absolutely do to instantly recover tons of free
space.

1. The Obvious Methods to Free Disk Space

a. Use CCleaner
to quickly clear your Windows recycle bin, temporary Internet files,
log files, memory dumps and other stubborn files that don’t show up in
Windows Explorer. CClean also provides an option to clean your unused
Windows Registry keys and your browser cookies but that won’t save any
disk space.
b. Use Revo Uninstaller
(the free version) to remove software programs, game demos and other
stuff that you no longer use. Revo has a useful “hunter mode” to help
you uninstall programs that are not listed in the “Add/Remove Programs”
section of the Control Panel.
c. Use either WinDirStat or Space Sniffer
to locate files that are taking the maximum amount of space on your
hard disk and either erase the unnecessary ones or move them to another
partition. You may also use Windows Desktop Search to easily find the largest files on your system from Windows Explorer.
d. Use Duplicate Cleaner to find duplicate files on your hard disk. These may include videos, documents, MP3s, zip archives, images
and all other types of files. Duplicate Cleaner compares the MD5 hash
of files – not just the file names or their byte size – and is thus
pretty accurate at identifying duplicates. Another good alternative for
removing duplicates is Duplicate File Finder – this is more suitable for novice users.
e. Check your downloads folder and get rid of all the program installers, driver packages, ISO files, IPSW files, virtual machines, and other bulky files that you may have downloaded from the Internet.
f.
If you enjoy watching video podcasts, it may be a good idea to delete
old episodes from the disk. iTunes, Zune and most other podcasting
software offer easy options to automatically delete podcast episodes
that either too old or have been watched.
g.
iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users should consider deleting device
backups from the computer to reclaim space. Open iTunes – >
Preferences – > Devices and delete all backups of your iOS devices
but for the most recent one.
h. If you have been an Outlook user all your life and only recently migrated to Gmail, you can backup Outlook’s bulky PST files to Gmail and then move them to another drive for safekeeping. All your old emails can be easily access from Gmail itself.

2. The Not-So-Obvious Ways to Recover Free Space

a. Get Rid of the Shadow Copies

When
you install new software program, update device drivers or apply
patches and hot-fixes on your computer, Windows will automatically store
a snapshot of your system before making the changes. This helps because
if something stops working after the installation, you can easily
restore your system to the last working state.
Other than system
files, Windows also stores backup copies of data files (like documents,
pictures, etc.) on your computer which may come really handy if you
accidentally modify or delete the original files. Technically, these are
known as shadow copies and the feature is available in all editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7.
If
you have been using your computer for some time, the disk space
consumed by these restore points and shadow copies may easily run in
gigabytes. You can either remove all the restore points from your system
or, if you would like to play extra safe, you can keep the new restore
points and just get rid of the old ones.
Click the Windows Start
button and type cmd in the search box (not the Run dialog). Now press
Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open the command prompt with Administrator privileges. Click Yes if you are shown the User Access Control Window.
Now type the following command to remove only the old shadow copies:

c:\>vssadmin delete shadows /for=c: /oldest

Or, if your system is working normally, use this command to remove all the shadow copies.

c:\>vssadmin delete shadows /for=c: /all

Command Line is quicker but if you prefer the visual option,
launch Disk Cleanup from the Start Menu and choose Clean up System
Files. Switch to the “More Options” tab and choose “Clean up” under
System Restore and Shadow Copies to delete all but the most recent
restore point on the hard disk.

b. Make the Service Pack Permanent

When
you installed Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a Windows 7 machine, it saves the
installer packages in c:\WINDOWS\WinSxS folder. These would be required
in case you want to uninstall SP1 later but if that is unlikely to
happen, you can remove the SP1 backup files and reclaim some lost space.
Launch
Disk Cleanup, choose Clean up System Files, select “Service Pack Backup
Files” and delete. Alternatively, you may run the following command as
an admin:

c:\>dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

You may have to reboot the machine after the dism command. If you are on Windows Vista, you may also use the Vista Cleaner utility to clean the Service Pack installer files.

c. Reserve Less Space for Restore Points

Windows
will continue to save new restore points until all the disk space
reserved for saving restore points is filled up. That means if you have
less reserved space, the old ones will get deleted more quickly to make
room for new restore points.
Go to Windows Start – > Run and type sysdm.cpl to open the System Properties dialog.
Click the “System Protection” tab, choose your current drive (C:) and
click Configure. Set the Max Usage anywhere between 3% and 5% of the
total disk size. Apply the changes.
Now that you have recovered
some important space, go back to the “System Protection” tab and click
Create to to capture of snapshot of your system in its current working
state – just to be on the safe side of things.

Your geek friends have convinced you to make that switch from Windows
Live Hotmail to Gmail but the problem is how to move old Hotmail email
messages and folders to the new Gmail address ? Hotmail doesn’t support
IMAP or POP3 and it will take years to manually forward individual
emails from Hotmail to Gmail.

No
worries, there’s a wonderful solution that costs $0 and comes from
Microsoft itself – its the Office Outlook connector and works with
Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007.

Here’s a step by step guide on moving emails from Hotmail to Gmail via Outlook:
1. Install the Outlook connector and then configure your MSN Hotmail / Windows Live Hotmail accounts with Outlook.
2. Once you have all your Hotmail email message available locally inside Outlook, configure Gmail IMAP access inside Outlook.
3.
Now copy or just drag-n-drop the Hotmail folders (downloaded in Step 1)
over your Gmail Inbox folder in Outlook. Its the same migration
procedure as described in a previous tutorial – Backup Outlook Email to Gmail.
As
your Outlook synchronizes with Gmail, all your Hotmail messages will
become available inside Gmail as well. And if you have multiple Hotmail
accounts, this trick will help you consolidate email messages from all
those account at one place.

Gmail does provide POP3 access
so you can easily read your Gmail messages offline in Outlook, Outlook
Express, Thunderbird or any other email client. The only problem with
the POP3 approach is that Gmail cannot synchronize with Outlook so
there’s lot of duplicate work.

For instance, if you download your
emails from GMail to Microsoft Outlook and mark them as read, the
messages will still show a status of “Unread” in your Gmail Inbox.
Similarly, if you delete emails in Outlook, they’ll still exist in your
Gmail account.
These limitation of POP3 are a thing of the past
has Gmail has added support for IMAP – that means, in very simple terms,
if you delete a message in Outlook, it will also be deleted on the
Gmail server.

When you Flag a
message in Outlook, it’s starred inside Gmail. When you move a message
to Outlook Spam folder, it’s equivalent to reporting that message as
SPAM in Gmail.
The best part – if you move a message
downloaded from Gmail to some Outlook folder, Gmail automatically
applies a label to that email on Gmail server with the same name as the
Outlook folder.
IMAP support will be a blessing
especially for Gmail users who manage multiple web email accounts from
Outlook or Windows Live Hotmail. There’s little need for a GMail offline client now.
To
use this feature, you will have to enable IMAP through the POP/IMAP and
Forwarding settings of your Gmail account. If you don’t see the IMAP
settings it in your account yet, wait for some more time.
If you are using Gmail with Google Apps, always enter your full username during the configuration process including your domain.
Remember
that IMAP is only for synchronizing your emails. To sync your Outlook
contacts with that of GMail, you will still have to export the GMail
contacts as an Outlook CSV file and import that into Outlook.

POP lets you download email messages from
Gmail's servers onto your Microsoft Outlook (or Outlook Express). Unlike
Yahoo or Hotmail, POP access is free for all Gmail users and Google has
no plans to charge for it in the future.
This is a step-by-step
guide to download your email messages from Gmail servers and create a
backup in the extreme scenario when GMail Inbox is corrupted or you need
access to your Gmail emails on a computer that is not connected to the
intenet.

1. Enable POP in your Gmail account available in Mail
Settings | Forwarding and POP - Select 'Enable POP for all mail' or
'Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on.' Be sure to click 'Save
Changes'. You can choose to trash messages in Gmail after accessing them
with POP or let them stay in Inbox or Archive them. [#]

2. Configure Microsoft Outlook as POP email client - Read detailed instructions for configuring Microsoft Outlook 2003 or Microsoft Outlook Express and Outlook 2002 (XP)

3.
Test the GMail-Outlook connection. If everything works fine, click Send
Receive (F9) in Microsoft Outlook. Your GMail messages become available
in batches in MIcrosoft Outlook Inbox. It may take some time for all of
your mail to download if you have lots of messages. Outlook status bar
will display the download statistics in real time.

4. Microsoft
Outlook will store all your GMail Email messages and attachments in a
file on your hard disk called a personal folders (.pst) file. To create
a pst file of your GMail message, click Import And Export on the
Outlook File menu. Click Export To File, and then click Next. Click
Personal Folder File (.pst) , and then click Next. Choose the Inbox
folder that contains your GMail emails, and then click Next. Click the
Browse button, and then select the location to save the file. In the
File Name box, type a descriptive file name, and then click OK. Click
Finish.

Once your have created a pst file of your GMail Inbox,
you can restore your GMail Inbox even if is damaged due to a hardware
failure or other unexpected events. You can also move or transfer GMail
emails to a different computer by backing up the data from the original
hard disk, and then restoring it to the new hard disk.

You should
also note that messages in 'Spam' and 'Trash' aren't automatically
downloaded. If you'd like to access messages in 'Spam' and 'Trash' with
POP, you can move them to your inbox, or 'All Mail.' Also, Mail sent
from your POP client will not download again.

If your Outlook
client has trouble sending / receiving message from GMail, it could be
due to a know bug in Outlook that corrupts the SSL cache. Try to clear
the Internet Explorer SSL State and if that doesn't work, change the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) port from 465 to 25.

How to transfer emails from Microsoft Outlook to Gmail or Yahoo! Mail ?
The Outlook emails are inside a PST file. How to export this PST file
and import it into your GMail Inbox.

Sachin writes – “I have few thousand email messages inside Microsoft
Outlook (a pst file) organized in various folders. I know it is possible
to download emails from Gmail to Outlook using POP3 or IMAP but is the reverse path possible.”
Sachin is looking for a trick to archive all Outlook email messages (and folders) to his online Gmail account for two reasons – one is secure backup and two, he will be able to access his old emails from any computer.

Solution: It is quite easy to transfer Outlook emails to your Gmail mailbox. Here’s a step by step guide:
Step 1:
Enable IMAP in your Gmail account and then configure Outlook (or
Outlook Express or Windows Live Mail) to sync with your Gmail address
via IMAP. Read this guide.
Step 2: Import your Outlook PST file into a Personal folder that is different from your default Gmail Inbox.
To
import, click File -> Import And Export -> Import from another
program or file. -> Next -> Personal Folder File (.pst) ->
Next.
Select the PST file that contains your email, then pick the email folders that you want to import in Outlook and click Finish.
Step 3: Select the Personal folders that you want to backup online and copy them your Gmail Folder in Outlook (see screenshot).
In the Folder List, right-click the folder you want to copy and click Copy Folder name. Click the Gmail Folder in Outlook to copy that folder in that location. You can repeat the steps as needed for other folders.
That’s it. Your Outlook email will soon become available inside your online Gmail Inbox.
If your switching from Hotmail to Gmail, check this tutorial on moving emails from Hotmail to Gmail.
Caution:
The migration from Outlook to Gmail can take a long time if you have
very large Outlook pst file or if your internet connection speed is
slow. Therefore, consider removing all large emails before moving them to your Gmail via IMAP.

Keeping your Windows PC secure from viruses and spyware can be both
difficult and expensive, and some of the popular security suites out
there are known to slow down computers.

Yes, there are quite a few
free antivirus software programs available on the web but they are
often designed to convince you to purchase the professional edition and
thus nag users with prompts to purchase the commercial version.

If you are looking for a non-bloated software that doesn’t nag you at anytime, try Security Essentials
– it’s one of the best anti-virus and anti-malware programs that is
lightweight and absolutely free as long as you are running a genuine
copy of Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 on your computers.
Microsoft
Security Essentials is a capable application that has been streamlined
to run efficiently even on netbooks or older computers with low
resources. But even on a modern computer with multiple cores and several
gigs of ram, a lightweight antivirus solution will definitely make your
computer a bit speedier. Security Essentials is also ideal for running
in virtual environments such as the new XP Mode for Windows 7.
Microsoft Security Essentials is not just lightweight but easy to use as well. After downloading the small installer (it’s less than 10 MB in size),
installation takes less than a minute and it will immediately start
protecting your computer from virus attacks. When Security Essentials is
scanning your computer for problems, you can still work as normal as
the software has been designed to use a limited amount of system
resources if a user is using the computer while a scan is in progress.
Also see: Download Portable Anti-Virus Software for USB
The
software will automatically download new definition from the Internet
through Windows Update, and these will be installed on the computer
without requiring user intervention. Additionally, Security Essentials
is the first product to make use of Microsoft’s Dynamic Signature
Service that enables the program to get the latest definitions as soon
as their computer suspects a threat.
Although viruses have
traditionally been the main security concern in Windows PCs, the
security landscape has changed and computers users now have to face
threats of rootkits, malware, and spyware in addition to viruses.
Windows Defender was designed to keep adware and spyware off your
computer but Security Essentials works against most types of threats.
The software has received favorable reviews and one of the testers noted
that Security Essentials detected all of their sample threats correctly
without giving any false positive reports.

Stay
secure without sacrificing your computer’s speed or your hard-earned
money. Microsoft Security Essentials replaces both Windows Live OneCare
and Windows Defender.

Let’s say your primary computer is running
Windows 7 and you would also like to install Windows 8 on the same
computer but while keeping the old Windows 7 installation intact. What
are the options?

You can either run Windows 8 as a VM but for the
best experience, you should consider installing Windows 8 on a separate
partition of your computer’s hard disk. The advantage is that you don’t
have to fiddle with your existing Windows installation and you can
easily switch between Windows 8 and your existing Windows version with a
press of the restart button. In technical terms, such an arrangement is
also known as dual boot setup.
The requirements are simple – your
computer’s hard-drive should have at least 30 GB of free space that you
can convert into a Windows 8 partition and second, though we aren’t
touching your existing Windows partition, it is always a good idea to backup important files should anything go wrong in the process.

How to Install Windows 8 on another Partition

To get started, we first need to create a physical partition on our hard disk. Search for “Disk Management” in the Windows Search box and choose the program with the description – “Create and format hard disk partitions.”
While
the Disk Management console is open, select the Drive Volume that you
want to partition (C: in our case) and choose “Shrink Volume.”

Next
you need to specify the size of your new Windows 8 partition. For a
basic installation, 30-40 GB should be fine – you need to put this
number (1 GB = 1024 MB) in the box that says “Enter the amount of space
to shrink in MB.”
Windows will now create a new “unallocated”
volume with a similar capacity of 20 GB. Right click that volume and
choose “New Simple Volume.”

Inside
the Simple Volume Wizard, leave the volume size at the default value,
assign a new Drive Letter to this volume and format the partition using
NTFS format. That’s it – the new hard disk partition is now ready to
house your copy of Windows 8.

Install Windows 8 in Dual-Boot Mode

Let’s now install Windows 8 on the new partition. Insert the bootable Windows 8 DVD and reboot the machine.

If
your computer does not boot from the DVD, press F2 (or F12 or the
Delete key) while the machine is booting up to open the BIOS settings.
Switch to the Boot menu in BIOS settings and set CD-ROM as the first
device in the boot order.
Save the settings, exit the BIOS and
your computer should automatically reboot. It will display a prompt –
“Press any key to boot from CD or DVD..” and the boot process will pause
for a few seconds. Press any key now and it should take you straight
into the Windows 8 installer. Just follow the step-by-step wizard to
install Windows 8 on the new partition.
Windows will restart a
couple of times – you may want to eject the DVD to avoid those “boot
from DVD” prompts” – and the installation should be complete in about 15
minutes. Also, it will offer you a “Choose OS” screen so you can change
your default OS or switch to another one with a click. The whole thing
is pretty user-friendly.

<ins style="border: none; display: inline-table; height: 280px; margin: 0; padding: 0; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 336px;"><ins id="aswift_0_anchor" style="border: none; display: block; height: 280px; margin: 0; padding: 0; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 336px;">
</ins></ins>

This is a step-by-step guide that
illustrates how you can quickly and easily install a copy of Windows 8
on your MacBook or iMac using the free Boot Camp software.

As
you’ll soon learn, installing Windows 8 on a Mac is quite an easy
process and chances are good that your existing Apple hardware – like
the Magic Mouse or your Apple Wireless Keyboard – will work just fine
under Windows 8 without requiring additional drivers.
And if you
have been a Mac user all your life, this is one good opportunity to try
Windows on your existing machine (and there are not costs involved
except for your time). OK, let’s take a plunge:

Install Windows 8 on your Mac using Boot Camp

Step 1: Create a bootable Windows 8 DVD
using the ISO images of Windows 8. These ISO images are available in
32-bit and 64-bit versions – I tested using the 32-bit version on iMac
and it worked fine.
Step 2: Launch the Boot Camp Assistant available under the Applications – > Utilities folder of your Mac.

Step
3: Under Tasks, select Install Windows 7 and hit Continue. If you
already have Windows running on your Mac through Boot Camp, this option
will read “Remove Windows 7.” This will remove the existing Windows
partition from your Mac and thus all the programs and files on that
Windows partitions will also be lost.

Step
4: Assuming that you would like to continue, the next screen will let
you create a new partition for your Windows 8. Drag the slider to
allocate anywhere between 20 GB – 30 GB space to this new partition.

Step 5: Insert the Windows 8 DVD into your Mac and hit the Install button available inside the Boot Camp Assistant wizard.
Step
6: This will initiate the regular Windows 8 installation routine on
your Mac. The Windows installer will require you to pick an available
partition where installation should be performed. Pick the disk
partition that says “BOOTCAMP” but it may show the following error message:

Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS.

The
workaround is easy. While the Boot Camp partition is selected, choose
advanced Drive options and hit the F key to format that partition to
NTFS. That’s it. Just follow the prompts, use
DNJXJ-7XBW8-2378T-X22TX-BKG7J for the serial number and you should have
Windows 8 on your Mac in the next 20-30 minutes.

Switch between Windows 8 and Mac OS X

If
you are inside Windows 8 and restart the system, it will automatically
boot into Windows. However you can press and hold the Option key while
the system is booting and it will give you a choice of operating systems
that you want to boot into.
If you would like to change the
default start-up volume of your Mac, hit Command-Q and search for
Start-up Disk. Or open System Preferences and choose Startup Disk from
the View menu and set the default OS to either Mac or Windows 8.

If you wish to try Windows 8 on your
existing Windows computer but without disturbing any of existing apps or
program settings, you have two easy options.

You can either
install Windows 8 as a virtual machine or you can install Windows 8 on a
different partition and use it alongside your existing copy of Windows.
The former option is risk-free and you can can launch Windows 8 on your
computer just like you would use any other Windows software.

Use Windows 8 in a Virtual Environment

Here’s a step-by-step guide that explains how you can install Windows 8 as a virtual machine. Don’t let these steps intimidate you as installing Windows 8 inside a VM is an extremely easy process and should not take more than 20-30 minutes to complete.
Step 1: Download the ISO image of Windows 8 or create a bootable Windows 8 DVD as illustrated in the previous tutorials.
Step 2: Download and install the Virtual Box program for Windows available at oracle.com.
If you have been using an older version of Virtual Box, please upgrade
to the latest version of VM VirtualBox as it includes support for
Windows 8.
Step 3: Launch the Oracle VM Virtual Box program from
the Windows Programs Menu and click the “New” button (or press Ctrl+N)
to create a new Windows 8 Virtual Machine. Click the “Hide Description”
button to get started.

Step
4: Give your virtual machine a name (like Windows 8). Set the Operating
System as Windows and pick Windows 8 for the Version. Next you need to
allocate RAM to your new Windows 8 VM. The minimum that you should
allocate is 1024 MB (or 1 GB) though you can always move that slider
further right to 2 GB for improved performance. Click Create.
Step
5: Next choose the file location where you would like to save the
Windows 8 virtual hard disk. If you just want to try Windows 8 and don’t
plan to install any additional apps, the recommended size is 25 GB.
Set
the file type for the disk as VDI or VirtualBox Disk Image. Also, the
virtual hard disk should be allotted a “fixed size” because that is
likely to offer the best performance.

Step 6: You are all set to create new hard disk for Windows 8.
It
is time to grab a cup of coffee as VirtualBox will create a large
physical file now (for storing the Windows 8 OS) and it might take
anywhere between 3-4 minutes to finish the process.

Step
6: Your Windows 8 virtual hard disk is now ready but before you can use
it, you need to make a few modifications. While you are inside the
VirtualBox Manager windows, select the Windows 8 VM and press Ctrl + S
to open the settings window.

Go to System –> Motherboard and Enable IO APIC. (should be enabled by default)

Go to System –> Processor and Enable PAE/NX. (should be enabled by default)

Go to Display –> Video and Enable 2D Video Acceleration. (disabled by default)

Step 16: Click OK to save all the settings and double-click the Virtual Machine labeled Windows 8
to launch the program. You can either insert the Windows 8 installer
DVD or click the folder icon and browse to the folder where the Windows 8
ISO file is stored.
Click the Next button and this will
initiate the actual Windows 8 setup routine. You can the Windows 8
serial number and it should take about 20-30 minutes to complete the
installation process.

Here’s a quick video screencast that captures the actual installation of Windows 8 inside a Virtual Machine.

Trivia:
Do you know that you can use Virtual Machines, like the one created
above, to run another instance of Windows 8 inside an existing Windows 8
machine.

Whether you are looking to install Windows 8
on multiple computers or are planning to install Windows 8 on your Mac
using Boot Camp, you would need to create a bootable DVD using the
installer media.

What follows is a step-by-step guide that will
help you create a bootable DVD using Windows 8 ISO images. If your
computer doesn’t have a DVD burner, you may create bootable USB flash
drives as well using the same procedure. Let’s get started.

Create a Windows 8 Bootable DVD

First
download the ISO image of Windows 8 installer to your local disk. Then
download and install the Windows 7 DVD / USB tool from here. This is a free utility that is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
Launch the Windows DVD tool and and browse for the Windows 8 ISO file on your disk. Click Next.

If
you are creating a bootable Windows 8 DVD, use DVD for the media type
else select USB in case you want to turn your USB Flash Drive into an
installation media for Windows 8.

For
this example, we will create a bootable Windows 8 DVD. Insert a blank
DVD disk into the drive and and hit the Begin Burning button.
In
the next few minutes, the bootable DVD will be ready for you to install
Windows 8 on any of your other machines. You may also use a Blu-Ray disk
as long as your DVD drive is capable of writing to a Blu-Ray DVD. The
tool doesn’t support dual-layer DVD discs though.

<ins style="border: none; display: inline-table; height: 280px; margin: 0; padding: 0; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 336px;"><ins id="aswift_0_anchor" style="border: none; display: block; height: 280px; margin: 0; padding: 0; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 336px;">
</ins></ins>
