BasRel v1.0 is a plugin for Autodesk 3ds Max, designed to give a complete solution for creation of bas-relief (high-quality HeightMaps) from 3d models or 3d scenes.
These reliefs are ideally process on CNC machines. The algorithm of this plug-in is based on work of Pildonovak (see above). However, we developed the new features and capabilities.
The support for 64-bit systems allows BasRel perform effect more quickly. BasRel v1.0 with optimized RAM management makes creation process of bas-relief from 3d scene as easy as ABC.

We present a video tutorials on system for semi-automatic creation of bas-relief sculpture. As an artistic medium, relief spans the continuum between 2D drawing or painting and full 3D sculpture. Bas-relief (or low relief) presents the unique challenge of squeezing shapes into a nearly-flat surface while maintaining as much as possible the perception of the full 3D scene. We show as some a 3D model, camera, and a few parameters describing the relative attenuation of different frequencies in the shape, system creates a relief that gives the illusion of the 3D shape from a given vantage point while conforming to a greatly compressed height.

Today, in the time of 3D printers, automatic milling devices and laser carvers, bas-reliefs are used in many different areas like the decoration of dishes and bottles, the production of dies or seals in order to mark products with a company logo and they are still applied in coinage and the creation of modern pieces of art.

Let us suppose that we are given an arbitrary synthetic model and want to create an embossment of it on a metallic plate. The problem is that in most cases the depth of the model exceeds the thickness of the
material. Hence, in order to make this embossment possible, it is necessary to compress the spatial extend of the object to a fractional amount of its initial size. At ﬁrst glance, this seems to be quite simple, because one could apply global linear rescaling which serves the needs. However, the feature preservation of this methods is very poor. Presented in our video lessons method of Pildonovak solves all the problems.

In the first video tutorial shows in detail (step-by-step instructions) the process of building a Blender with bas-relief compositing node patch. We also present lessons on working with Blender in conjunction with other 2D and 3D applications, in this case Photoshop, AtrCam and Aspire, is also covered in chapters of this media-book.

In addition to the Video Tutorials you will get a working version of Blender 2.62 with a bas-relief composite node patch, as well as scenes in which you can import obj files and start rendering!

Bas-relief compositing node patch not included in release of Blender, but it's ready for use and anybody can build it. Now plug-in fine works with Blender 2.62 for Windows. Blender is a free software with open source code.
