CameraLabs
“The H20 takes great photos at lower sensitivities and you can also use the optical zoom when filming video – which is pretty rare for cameras in this price bracket. It has a wide range of auto exposure modes, fast and accurate autofocus and a very easy menu system, which makes this camera ideal for auto shooters. It’s is an great camera that combines big telephoto pull, easy to use, manual exposure control and HD video in a small form and it won’t break the bank either – because it has all the right features and makes great pictures it receives our full recommendation.”
“It’s well-designed, comfortable to use, and has a good mix of features including three types of automatic shooting modes and a manual mode if you want to tinker with shutter speeds and apertures (though there are only four available). The menu system is refined from other Sony cameras simplifying use. And while its photos are not stellar, they’re very good for its class–and for Sony.”
“This is a neat, compact digital camera offering extra zoom. Picture quality is good and the movie mode is advanced too. I like the design of the camera and there is a manual exposure mode as well.”
“If it weren’t for the lack of wide angle and quick access to ISO and exposure compensation, we would be tempted to award our highest ‘Essential!’ rating to the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20. With these few deficiencies, we feel more comfortable giving it our second-best rating, ‘Highly Recommended’, which is well deserved and a step up from the ‘Recommended’ award we gave to its predecessor last year.”
“The main problem with the H20 is that it lacks a wide-angle zoom. Otherwise though, its responsiveness, handling and controls make it a great camera to use. It’s very effective at full zoom too, which is where many rival compact superzooms struggle. Finally, the rather good HD movie mode is a major selling point on its own.”
Press

Press Release

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 17, 2009 – Sony today announced five new Cyber-shot® cameras (models DSC-T900, DSC-T90, DSC-W290, DSC-W230 and DSC-H20) that make it easier to take the best pictures without changing settings.

The intelligent auto mode, available on the T900, T90, W290 and H20 models helps “think” for you and detect scene conditions then adjust settings, especially in difficult lighting scenarios.

“This camera provides a seamless experience,” said Karim Noblecilla, senior product marketing manager in Sony Electronics’ Digital Imaging Division. “You can go from a walk in the park to taking pictures of a flower and then back to beautiful landscapes or indoor birthday parties, and the camera will know what to do to get the best shot.”

Additionally, intelligent auto mode enhances pictures of faces to capture natural skin tones, identifies when your subject has closed eyes, and helps reduce blur without damaging image quality.

Sony has combined three key technologies to make these cameras smarter.

Intelligent scene recognition (iSCN) detects up to eight scenes, recognizing objects, faces and lighting conditions (e.g. low light and backlight). Then, in one-thirtieth of a second, it changes the setting to get the best shot.

Face detection registers up to eight faces; adjusts focus, exposure, white balance and flash; and detects motion. This intelligent camera combines face detection with iSCN, featuring blink detection. It takes two pictures and saves the one in which the subject’s eyes are the least shut.

The W290 and H20 cameras also have selected-face memory, allowing you to zero in on the main subject’s face. The next time the camera detects the priority face in the frame, it will automatically focus on that person.

The W230 model has iSCN that detects up to five scene conditions, face detection with child and adult priority, and the Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization feature. You can turn on these features in auto mode to make the W230 camera intelligent.

All of the new cameras have the Optical SteadyShot feature and Smile Shutter™ technology. The Optical SteadyShot image stabilization feature helps prevent blur due to camera shake without impacting image quality. Equipped with Sony’s Smile Shutter technology, these cameras automatically capture a smile the moment it happens.

Another advanced feature that sets these cameras apart from most digital still cameras is iSCN advanced. Noblecilla said the iAuto feature increases the chances of getting a great shot. You can also set up iSCN advanced as a permanent feature. When the scene has difficult lighting such as backlight or low light, the camera will take two shots within a fraction of a second using two alternative settings, so you can select which picture you prefer.

HD Movies

The W290, H20, T90 and T900 cameras feature wide and full-screen 720p movie recording at 30 frames per second in fine, standard and VGA recording modes. The 720p movie resolution is three times higher than VGA movies.

The movie function is based on the MPEG4 codec for video compression. Plus the T900 has a stereo microphone. Benefits of the format include high-quality video as well as PC-friendly files that are easy to download, upload and share.

Style and Color

With a compact design for easy on-the-go portability, the DSC-T90 and DSC-T900 cameras are 15 millimeters and 16.3 millimeters thin, respectively. 2009 line of W and T colors come in a pallet of colors to match your unique style.

Powerful Core Features

The W230 camera has 12.1 megapixels, 4x (30mm) Carl Zeiss® Vario Tessar optical zoom lens and 3-inch (measured diagonally) LCD screen. The W290 model adds a 5x wide (28mm) optical zoom lens.

The T90 camera also has 12.1 megapixels and a 4x Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar optical zoom and 3-inch (measured diagonally) wide touch-panel LCD screen. The T900 camera adds a larger 3.5-inch Xtra Fine LCD screen that delivers high resolution images (921,600 dots), which is approximately four times higher than conventional LCD screens.

The H20 model features 10.1 megapixels, a 10x Carl Zeiss optical zoom lens and a 3-inch (measured diagonally) LCD screen.

Easy navigation

Sony has simplified the display of options on most of these cameras to make it easier for customers to use them. The most commonly used features include shooting mode, zoom, play, delete and Smile Shutter. These are available at a click or touch of a button. More sophisticated users can select other shooting modes or change the settings using the menu button.

Tools to Edit, Archive and Share

These cameras are equipped with tools to edit, archive and share. They have in-camera retouch features like red-eye correction and image management to easily sort through thousands of photos in calendar view or album view. You can group favorites and filter by baby, adult, all faces or smiles. The PhotoMusic feature offers an HD slideshow mode with transitions and music for viewing on the camera or television.
The HD output feature lets you view images in high-defintion, although HDMI and component cables are not included. The T900 camera is bundled with a camera stand that allows HDMI connectivity, but the cable is not included.

Bundled Picture Motion Browser (PMB) software allows you to quickly organize images on a compatible PC and upload images to the Web. You can search and organize images by event, smile or face, including children and infants. Then you can display them in calendar or chronological views organized into folders.

“It may be a little on the expensive side which will undoubtedly turn off some consumers. But take our word for it, you should check this camera out. We really enjoyed taking pictures with it and did not find anything too terribly wrong with the camera. This is a cool camera and it works precisely as its marketed and it’s worth trying out.
“This is an awesome little camera however, It’s not for everyone. It’s added abilities are nice and the secondary front LCD is definitely more for those who would rather be in front of the camera than behind it. Also, the touch-screen interface might drive some people insane regardless of how responsive it is. The camera is a standout in design and features and actually solves a real problem instead of just being a gimmick.”
“Despite its reasonably good image quality, the Samsung ST550 could still use some refinement. The menu system needs to be more user-friendly and the battery life and charging options need vast improvement. We’re also not convinced that the majority of people who want to take self-portraits will need a second screen, but we applaud the innovation.”
“The abundance portrait and facial recognition technologies, image stabilization, 3.5in wide touchscreen rear LCD, super macro mode and clever subject tracking auto focus make this a real ‘people camera’. It looks the part, by and large plays the part too and can only get a big thumbs up.”
“With solid image quality, an incredibly sharp and responsive touch-screen LCD, and an innovative front-mounted display for self-portraits, the Samsung DualView TL225 delivers a stellar shooting experience, so it’s our latest Editors’ Choice point-and-shoot camera.”
“The Samsung ST550’s twin displays are what most people will pick up on, but it’s the haptic touchscreen interface that’s the real star. The camera’s motion-detection capability is also very impressive. Its pictures are pretty ordinary, but the camera itself is a stunningly successful technical exercise.”
“If you’re looking for a simple gadget with nifty little features, then the Samsung ST550 / TL225 with its hefty price tag will go well with your purchase for the holidays. If imaging quality is of utmost importance with no compromises, there are others to consider. However, you would be doing yourself a disservice should you choose to not even have a hands-on trial of the Samsung ST550 and its nifty features. Who knows, you might just get convinced! “
“This camera is loaded with the essential gimmicks – face detection and recognition, smile and blink automation of shutter firing and so on, but it also permits a reasonable degree of user control. Samsung divides customers into six categories, one of which is Style. The ST before the 550 tells us that this little camera is for the style conscious. The high gloss finish on the front panel looks the goods, at least until it is smeared with finger prints. CSI will love it! An interesting camera, well thought out, worth consideration by any tourist.”
Update to my Update: Amazon would not allow me to post the link of the detailed review of this product on this review page, however they did allow me to post the link (to the review) in the comment section (comments are located to the right of the screen at the very end of my review, click on comments and I have the link to the review pasted, 10th post down)…

Fun Camera, but Overpriced….
I purchased this camera 2 weeks ago for use for an upcoming trip to use along side my Nikon D90. The feature set and touch screen interface drew me to this camera, although upon using this camera, its not quite worth the cash.

Press

Press Release

13th August 2009: Samsung Digital Imaging, leaders in innovation and technology, today announced the arrival of the ultra slim and stylish ST550 and ST500 compact cameras which boast yet another ‘world first’: front and back LCD display technology.

Delivering an unrivalled user experience, the hidden 1.5” LCD located on the front of the camera allows consumers to take accurate portraits using the front image as a guide – whether it’s a group shot with friends or a snap of yourself on holiday. There is no need to even press the shutter button – just a big smile will trigger the cameras to take the picture.

On the reverse, the Samsung ST550 features the world’s highest resolution 3.5” wide touch screen LCD* , almost four times the size of many other cameras, complete with haptic feedback for ease of use.

Complementing this, the 12.2 mega pixel cameras also use the perfect combination of a 27mm wide angle Schneider KREUZNACH lens with 4.6x optical zoom. This gives the photographer a wider shooting range from a shorter distance, producing clear, clean images with even resolution from the centre of the picture right to the edges.

“These cameras are the very first of their kind,” said Steve Mitchell, General Manager Marketing, Samsung Digital Imaging Division.

“The use of digital imaging technologies has evolved and we are offering functionality and capabilities that no other digital camera manufacturer has yet addressed. These cameras will be must-haves for those individuals that use popular social networking websites and for families that want to get everyone, including the photographer, in the picture.”

Smart Gesture User Interface (UI)
Showcasing further innovations, a Smart Gesture User Interface (UI) with built-in orientation sensor, means a simple tap or hand gesture allows users to access key features quickly. A simple tap can also turn the front LCD on instantly, ready to take the perfect self portrait photo.

One touch shooting and Auto-Focus
Sometimes the focal point of your picture is not always in the centre of the frame. The ST550 and ST500’s One Touch Auto Focus feature allows you to focus on a different part of the shot by simply touching the desired area. Once you’ve selected the focal point, you can simply leave your finger on the screen for two seconds or push the shutter button to take the picture.

Smart Auto (Scene Recognition)
Take professional-looking photos with Samsung’s advanced Smart Auto feature so you never have to worry about your photos being washed out, too dark or out of focus. Smart Auto analyses key elements of your composition such as colour, brightness, motion and subject and then automatically adjusts to take the perfect shot.

Smart Face Recognition
Samsung’s innovative Smart Face Recognition technology actually remembers faces it sees frequently and then prioritises them when focussing and exposing future shots. It can store up to 20 recognised faces in the cameras’ internal memory and allows users to search for their favourite faces in playback. This can be done quickly by using the ‘Face’ search in Smart Album, instead of viewing every single photo on the memory card.

In “Blink Detection Mode” the camera will take a series of shots when closed eyes are detected so everyone is captured with their eyes open; in “Smile Mode” a picture is automatically taken when smiles are detected and, in “Beauty Shot” mode, facial skin is retouched to three different user defined levels for brighter and smoother skin tones.

HD Movie Recording
The ST500 and ST550 record HD video in 1280×720p resolution at 30 frames per second in H.264 format. This format allows more than twice as much recording capacity as the MP4 format, so gives you more room on your memory card for images and movies. The ST550 also features HDMI connectivity via an optional adapter, so you can see your HD video creations in glorious HD on an HD TV.

Dual Image Stabilization/Perfect Self Portrait & Perfect Self Timer
Samsung’s Dual Image Stabilization technology combines advanced Digital and Optical image stabilization to ensure outstanding photos without blur – even in low light conditions. Couple this with the new front facing LCD screen and Samsung’s Perfect Self Portrait & Perfect Self Timer functions, and taking professional looking pictures of yourself and others is easy.

The ST500 is available in silver, red and blue colours and the ST550 is available in black, gold, orange and purple colours. All will be available from leading high street and online retailers from late August 2009.

Features

Dual LCD Displays
With the Dual LCD on front and back, ST550 and ST500 provide the easiest way to take the perfect self portrait, either by yourself or with friends or family, every time. On the front of the camera is a 1.5” LCD that shows you exactly what the picture will look like, so you can now be a subject of the picture, as well as the photographer.

- When you tap the front LCD, it turns on and automatically goes into Self-Portrait mode, ensuring that the user will always be framed exactly the way they want. You can also turn on the front LCD with a simple selection through the intuitive interface. As soon as you smile, the camera automatically takes the picture. But the Dual LCDs do more.
- In Children mode, the front LCD plays a fun animation to capture a child’s attention while taking their photo.
- Shutter Info ensures you take a photo of your subject while they’re smiling, the front LCD will display a “smiley face” when the shutter is pushed halfway thus signalling to the subject they should smile.
- Function Info helps you to know the features of every function, with the front LCD providing a visual readout of key camera settings, including whether or not the flash is engaged or if macro focus is in use.
- With Self-Timer, when taking a group photo using the self-timer, the front LCD will show a preview of the shot as well as a visual countdown timer so that everyone knows exactly when the photo will be snapped.

Smart Gesture UI
When it comes to smart, user-friendly features, the ST550 and ST500 are leading the way. Take for example its innovative Smart Gesture UI with built-in orientation sensor, which lets you quickly access and use the key features with either a simple tap or a hand gesture. To turn on the smaller LCD located on the front, simply tap the screen and activates automatically and immediately.

Using other advanced features is just as simple. With the Smart Gesture UI you can quickly scroll through your photos by slightly tilting the device in either direction or by selecting the appropriate photos for a slide show. You can also easily delete photos from your library using Gesture UI by marking a cross (X) on the screen using your finger or you can simply save your favourite photos into a separate folder.

If you want to rotate the images draw a circle (O) on the screen; if you want to see the next image you can drag it on to the screen with a sweep of your finger or by simply tilting the device.

World’s Highest Resolution 3.5” Wide Touch Screen Rear LCD*
The 3.5” wide LCD touch screen located on the back of the ST550 displays the sharpest images of any camera available today, delivering almost four times more than many cameras. Unlike other digital cameras, the LCD touch screen uses Samsung’s unique Haptic technology. That means the camera responds with a slight vibration and beep whenever you select an option.

12.2 Megapixels CCD, 27mm Wide Angle lens with 4.6x Optical Zoom
Samsung’s ST550 and ST500 come fully equipped with a true colour-filtered 12.2 megapixel CCD and boast a powerful 4.6x Optical Zoom, guaranteeing some of the sharpest and most detailed images available and allow for the printing of poster-sized photos. Whether you’re indoors or out, shooting a landscape or friends around a table, the 27mm wide angle lens plus 4.6x optical zoom give you a wider shooting range from a shorter distance delivering greater flexibility than 35mm cameras. Capture images of beautiful landscapes, entire wedding parties and skyscrapers without having to back up to get the shot. The precisely cut 27mm optical lens from Schneider-KREUZNACH delivers clear, clean images with even resolution from the centre to the edges. Each lens surface is multi-coated to minimize ghosting or flaring for a great shot every time.

Advanced Dual Image Stabilization (IS)
Samsung’s Advanced Dual Image Stabilization (IS) feature allows you to capture crystal-clear, blur-free shots without using a flash or tripod. The ST550 and ST500’s true Dual IS combines both Optical and Digital Image stabilizers to produce sharp images without the confusion commonly found in other cameras. The optical IS intelligently compensates for hand trembling by shifting the lens in the opposite direction. When Optical IS isn’t quite enough, the Digital IS automatically takes over to ensure blur-free images.

HD Movie Recording in the palm of your hand
The ST550 and ST500 are like having a compact HD video camera that also takes professional-grade photos. They record HD video in 1280×720p resolution at 30 frames per second. Their H.264 format also allows you to record twice as much as an MP4 and four times more than an MJPG (the format used in many other digital cameras), delivering much higher video and sound quality. With the ST550’s mini-HDMI connector, you can also now watch your HD videos with any HDTV or HD monitor.

Smart Auto: shoot like a pro
Take professional-looking photos with Samsung’s Smart Auto feature so you never have to worry about your photos being washed out, too dark or out of focus. Smart Auto analyzes key elements of your composition such as colour, brightness, motion and subject and then automatically adjusts to take the perfect shot.

Smart Album
A 4GB memory card can store over 1,200 12-megapixel photos. That means a lot of photos to sort through, but with Samsung’s convenient Smart Album feature, you can quickly scroll through your entire library of images and organize them in the way that’s best for you. This unique feature allows you to organize photos by Favourite (if tagged as a “favourite” photo), Face (someone you’ve taken many photos of), Timeline (date photos were taken), Colour, Content (photos, videos, voice) and Week.

Perfect Portrait System

Picture-perfect moments at their best
The Perfect Portrait System takes the guess work out of shooting beautiful portraits. Key features of this system are the Smile Shot and Blink Detection technologies which automatically detect when your subjects are smiling and have their eyes open so you capture them looking their best. Another advanced feature is the Red-eye Fix mode. This in-camera feature automatically fixes the typical occurrences of red-eye before the photo is produce. That means you don’t have to spend time afterwards removing red-eyes from your photos.

One touch shooting and Auto-Focus
Sometimes the focal point of your picture is not always in the centre of the frame. In cases like this, the ST550 and ST500’s One Touch Auto Focus feature allows you to focus on a different part of the shot by simply touching the desired area. That means your subject will always be in focus. Once you’ve selected the focal point, you can simply leave your finger on the screen for two seconds or push the shutter button to take the picture.

Smart Face Recognition
The ST550 and ST500 feature advanced Face Recognition technology that automatically stores up to 20 preferred faces to the cameras’ internal memory. While taking a portrait, the ST550 and ST500 will automatically recognize if one of the user’s preferred faces is in the frame and identify them as a priority for focus and exposure. Users can also save time sorting through their photos and instead search for photos that contain a specific face.

Beauty Shot
Samsung’s Beauty Shot feature lets you remove all the imperfections on your subject’s face such as wrinkles, blemishes and moles, leaving skin flawless. Simply select one of the two editing options to even out skin tone and complexion.

Photo Style Selector: unleash your creativity
The ST550 and ST500 are designed to help you find your inner artist and shoot beautiful pictures. With Samsung’s unique highlight feature, you can focus on one area of your photo and blur everything around it, so turning a normal photo into something much more complex. Simply select one of the two editing options to even out skin tone and complexion.

Transform your photos from simple memories to works of art using the Photo Style Selector feature. Choose from a wide selection of artistic treatments ranging from classic black and white to something more colourful allowing you to take control of the colours to be a true artist.

“For its hefty price we would expect a lot more photographer friendly features which puts in an awkward position where the beginner will not be interested because of price and more experienced shooters will be turned off by the lack of features. However, the TX1 produces outstanding image results, it’s too bad it could not strike a fair balance between style, price, and features. All that aside this camera is worth taking a second look at if you’re after the best point-and-shoot.”
“The TX1 is a great advancement in the compact camera sector, better low-light ability and photo quality instead of more megapixels. It still has some ground to make up relative to photo processing and a better lens, but still, this camera is one of the most slender, most well defined bodies we have seen in a long time.”
“Oh, the Sony TX1 is a Dave’s Pick all right, let’s get that out of the way right now. It has the technical wonders required to earn one, starting with the new Exmor R sensor’s increased light sensitivity, the responsive widescreen, touch-sensitive LCD, and some innovative shooting modes.”
“Good: Thin and light with an impressive touchscreen and amazing low-light capabilities. A fast 10-fps shutter is perfect for sports, kids, animals and the occasional fleeing celebrity. Cool new features like Hand-Held Twilight and Sweep Panorama modes work like a charm.

Not so Good: You pay big bucks for such a small cam: Price tag skates close to 4 Benjamins. Confusing menus can make it frustrating to change settings on the fly.”
“This pocket camera is very different to most of its competitors. It has a number of exciting features such as a 10 frames per second burst mode, High Definition movies, sweep panorama and a handheld twilight mode that aims to reduce noise once lighting levels fall. It you are on the lookout for a digital camera packed with the latest features then take a look at the Sony Cybershot DSC TX1.”
“We have to look at this camera as a version-0.9 offering. Although it’s almost fully developed, it’s not all the way there. Sweep Panorama and Handheld Twilight are really good features, as is the 10-frames-per-second shooting. Yet colors were uneven, and focusing isn’t as good or accurate as we’d like. Given these issues, this one is hard to recommend. Hopefully, the implementation of Exmor R technology in the WX1 or future models will resolve these issues.”

Press Release

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 5, 2009 – Sony today announced two new Cyber-shot® cameras (DSC-TX1 and DSC-WX1 models) that provide unprecedented advances in low-light performance with approximately twice the sensitivity of cameras with traditional image sensors.

These Cyber-shot cameras are the first to employ Sony’s new “Exmor R” back illuminated CMOS sensor technology to improve shooting in low-light scenarios, enhancing image clarity and drastically reducing grain.

“With these new “Exmor R” CMOS sensor cameras, Sony has vastly improved the customer experience for taking pictures with digital still cameras in low-light scenarios,” said Phil Lubell, director of the digital imaging business at Sony Electronics. “We’ve all taken pictures in dimly lit areas, where the results were grainy and unclear. By redesigning the way these cameras capture light, Sony is leading the industry by creating this easy way to take amazingly clear, vibrant photos in low lighting scenarios.”

“Exmor R” Sensor Optimizes Low-Light Performance
Conventional image sensor architecture has required wires and other circuit elements to be positioned above the light sensitive photo-diodes, limiting the imager’s light gathering capability. Positioning these elements behind the photo-diodes, Sony’s “Exmor R” image sensors can gather more light, resulting in approximately twice the sensitivity compared to conventional sensors.

To further extend low-light shooting performance, the TX1 and WX1 cameras incorporate the hand-held twilight and anti-motion blur multi-shot modes introduced in Sony’s breakthrough Cyber-shot DSC-HX1. Using “Exmor R” CMOS sensor’s high speed, these modes capture six separate images in less than a second and utilize Sony’s BIONZ™ processor to combine the shots into a single image of extraordinary detail and low noise.

Combining the “Exmor R” technology with hand-held twilight and anti-motion blur modes delivers a breakthrough in low-light photography. Users can now capture images of stunning detail and low noise in scenes with no more than candlelight—without flash or the need of a tripod.

Innovative Sweep Panorama™ and High-Speed Shooting
In addition to their breakthrough low light performance, these new cameras also include Sony’s Sweep Panorama and 10 frames per second burst shooting features, which were introduced with the Sony® DSC-HX1 camera. The TX1 and WX1 cameras offer these features in smaller, more compact bodies that match nearly any unique style.

Capturing wide landscapes is as easy as “press and sweep.” Sweep Panorama mode lets you reach beyond the traditional wide-angle lens and capture breathtaking shots. Using the high-speed “Exmor R” CMOS sensor, the cameras shoot continuously while you sweep across the scene. Using the BIONZ imaging processor, they automatically stitch the pictures together to create one stunning panoramic photo.

The TX1 and WX1 Cyber-shot models can take up to 185 and 256-degree panorama shots respectively in one easy press-and-sweep motion with an image size of 7152 x 1080 (ultra wide horizontal).

Advanced Technology and Compact Design
While the HX1 camera is a well-rounded solution for customers who are looking for high-zoom and speed in a smaller size than a DSLR, the TX1 and WX1 cameras are made for an audience that wants advanced technology in an even more compact design.

With its slim profile of just 16.5mm, the 10.2 mega-pixel TX1 offers streamlined, distinguished curves for a sophisticated look appealing to the fashion-oriented who are also looking for great performance.

This model features a new operation on the touch panel that lets you scroll through images with an effortless “flick” of your finger and directly access menus on the 3-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus™ display.

With a Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens, the TX1 camera lets you focus as little as 0.4 inches from your subject for extraordinary close-up shots. The 4x telescopic zoom is perfect for capturing far-away subjects, and Sony’s Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization helps overcome camera shake.

The 10.2 mega-pixel WX1 camera has a 2.7-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus display and is just over three quarters of an inch thin—an ideal choice for DSLR owners who also want to carry a compact, high performance digital still camera.

The WX1 camera features a Sony G lens with an extraordinary wide angle 24-120mm 5x optical zoom. This lens’ f/2.4 maximum aperture offers nearly twice the light gathering capability of conventional lenses, and works together with the “Exmor R” imager and low-light shooting modes to provide low-light photography beyond the abilities of other compact cameras.

Tech Savvy Cameras
These cameras include the most recent Sony technology, including, Intelligent Auto (iAuto) mode which, recognizes scenes, lighting conditions and faces, and adjusts settings resulting in clearer images, faces with more natural skin tone and less blur; Face Detection that detects up to eight faces and optimizes focus, flash, exposure and white balance and intelligent Scene (iSCN) that delivers nine Scene Selection modes to quickly adjust for specific shooting conditions.

Pet mode is a new Sony feature that minimizes blur when shooting moving pets. This new mode also reduces glowing pet red-eye.

Additionally, the cameras have technologies Sony Cyber-shot customers have come to expect. These include Smile Shutter™ technology that automatically captures a smile, dynamic range optimization (DRO) that improves exposure and contrast, intelligent Auto Focus that captures fleeting moments and HD video capability that records HD movies in 720p high definition MPEG4 format.

With HD video capability, these cameras record HD movies in 720p high definition MPEG4 format for stunning large-screen home movie playback. You can record up to 29 minutes (or up to 2GB file size) in 720p format.

Pricing and Availability
The TX1 camera will be available in silver, gray, pink and blue this September for about $380. The WX1 camera will be available in black this October for about $350. Pre-sales will start in August. The cameras and a range of accessories will be available online

But… it appears Olympus is not taking this laying down and future releases of the PEN could spell some tough competition for the GF1.”
Size, speed, features, and DSLR photo quality make this micro-four-thirds camera one of the most desirable cameras yet.”
Its photo quality is as good as a digital SLR but it is small enough to pack around in your pocket. If you consider quality, performance and picture quality this camera is of the highest order.”
“This is the first camera to actually deliver on the benefit of a mirrorless system: interchangeable lenses in a small form factor without killing features, speed, or picture quality at a price that won’t break the bank. Its one problem is the goofy LCD/EVF-based viewfinder system for shooting action. If you want something with a little more horsepower than a point-and-shoot, I recommend the GF1.”
“Aside from image quality, the GF1 nearly wins. I feel this for a couple of reasons. Number one, autofocus is a clear win for the GF1. If you need or want autofocus or even manual focus, I’d recommend you pick up the GF1. However the GF1’s kit zoom lens doesn’t collapse, the camera itself doesn’t have sensor-based stabilization, and the slightly better controls and built-in flash aren’t big enough pluses to overcome those other two things.”
“Overall the camera works well with the auto setting of white balance, although in our tests we found that sometimes the preset would work better and sometimes the auto.”
“If you want a camera that does as much as possible as cheaply as possible, don’t get this one. With the GF1, you get simplicity, quality and precision, not gadgets. It will appeal most to dSLR owners looking for a back up camera, as well as old school photographers who prefer simplicity to technology. “
“We like the build quality and the look of the GF1 very much, and its picture quality is great as well. It has a fast burst mode (up to three frames per second), a useful HD video mode (albeit without stereo audio recording), and it’s very easy to use. What we don’t like is its noisy performance at high ISO speeds, its sometimes unreliable autofocusing in dimly lit scenes, and the fact that the screen often misrepresents the shot about to be taken.”
“This is a marvelous camera. There is a saying that the best camera is the one you have with you, and on that criterion alone the GF1 ranks as one of the best. It is also not surprising that demand for the Olympus E-P1 and Panasonic GF1 has overwhelmed supply. This is a new and long overdue camera type – top image quality from a compact form.”
“I really loved the GF1, and will find it very hard to return it when this review is finished, meaning that I may have to wipe the dust and cobwebs off my wallet and actually hand over my own hard earned cash for one. The Olympus E-P1 now has some very, very strong competition in the form of possibly the most engaging and enjoyable camera on the market today. A compromise, for sure, but a surprisingly happy one.”
“Overall, the Panasonic GF1 is an extremely good camera for such a small package, recording impressive detail thanks to its quality sensor, image processor, and fine optics. While we’d never say it’s for everyone, the Panasonic GF1 will be irresistible for many of our readers; and it’s a sure Dave’s Pick.”
“SLR shoppers will be put off by the limited lens selection and lack of a true viewfinder. But if you want better quality than what you can get from a point-and-shoot and aren’t interested in the bulk of an SLR, the Lumix DMC-G1 will afford you plenty of photographic power and a lot of room to learn and grow.”
“The camera focuses quickly, has good shutter response and a decent continuous shooting rate. Image and video quality are very good, ISO performance leaves true compact digitals far behind, and there’s a bunch of lenses that will mount on the camera with proper adaptors, and, depending on their age, provide partial to full compatibility.”
“The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 takes most of the good points of its bigger brothers, the G1 and GH1, and literally squeezes them inside a smaller, more compact-camera-like body. The fantastically well-implemented Live View, lightning fast auto-focus, excellent image quality and added bonus of 720p video make the GF1 a great camera for beginners and more serious photographers alike.”
“It’s safe to say that you can’t get a better endorsement than having a reviewer buying the camera they are writing about. For travel and everyday shooting, the GF1 more than fits the bill. It offers great photo quality, snappy performance, and all the bells and whistles that users of compact cameras are used to, with all the benefits of an interchangeable lens camera. The GF1 is the camera many people have been waiting for, and Panasonic certainly delivered the goods.”
“In the final analysis what we come down to is that the GF1 is likely the best of breed at the moment, but not a panacea for someone looking for a semi-pocketable large sensor camera. When combined with the LVF1 electronic viewfinder the camera starts to have an overall profile close to that of the GH1, but gives up that camera’s state-of-the-art EVF and articulated LCD, as well as 1920X1080 HD video capability.”
“The GF1 and the E-P1 had us torn, and if we were forced to choose only one, we wouldn’t be able to make a decision. The Lumix has its merits, such as onboard flash and an electronic viewfinder options, which makes it stand out from its rival. But at the same time, the lack of an sensor-shift image stabilization puts it at a slight disadvantage, considering the Micro Four Thirds system is supposed to be compatible with a wide range of other optics via adapters.”
“Potential buyers should note that even though Panasonic has packed in lots of automated functions for point-and-shoot users, the full capabilities of this camera can only be realized with raw file capture – and only by users who are prepared to edit images in Adobe’s Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. The high price tag of the camera plus lens can be justified by the performance achievable through these means – but not if you plan to stick with the bundled software.”
“This is a joy of a camera to shoot with. It gave us better shots than we could hope for with any compact, at an acceptable trade-off between size and convenience. It’s dead-easy to use, with Panasonic’s intelligent iA (Intelligent Auto) mode for point and shoot situations, and full manual settings for finer control.
Review Index – (updated 03 November’09)

“It looks like Canon is paying attention to photographers who need a portable camera that captures RAW. And this camera because of its small size and powerful set of controls is clearly the market leader, for now. Close on the heels of the S90 is a new group of large sensor and small cameras like the Leica X1 and Panasonic GF1. But for the time being the S90 because it shoots RAW, its tiny, and it comes in under the bar at $500 is the compact camera of choice.”
“This is one hot camera – don’t expect any deals for months. Question is, can you justify the $429 price tag for a compact camera? If you want a point-and-shoot camera that has outstanding low light ability, tons of adjustments and above all, quality images then the answer is yes. Yet, if you’re looking for DSLR capability, this camera does not offer it. It’s a relatively slow camera and may put some people off, but truthfully, we loved it. For serious shooters it would make a wonderful and dependable backup camera.”
“I know, it’s costs more than most compact on the market. But this baby has an awesome amount of power and you put it in your pocket. Very good low-light capability for a camera this size; really fast lens and yes sports fans it even has RAW.”
“WIRED Awesomely fast lens. Granular control over just about any aspect of your shots that you can think of. Slick control ring. Quick startup and shooting. TIRED Slightly bulkier than the smallest pocket cams. Backside controls are a little cramped.”
“The S90 has the good, traditional Canon menu system when you tap the FUNC button, not the crummier new one I’ve seen in some Powershots that require more button presses and remove some features. I’ll let you know more when I get my hands on a production version. From the prototype I used, I’m dubbing the S90 as the best compact digital camera that Canon, or anyone, has ever made.”
“When we picked up the S90 the first thing we noticed was the control ring built around the lens. It is used to adjust camera settings and can have multiple functions assigned to it. For instance it can act as a zoom ring, with each click jumping between the traditionally popular 28, 35, 50, 85 and 105mm equivalent focal lengths. Other functions can also be assigned to it using it to adjust either the focus, shutter-speed, aperture, exposure compensation, white balance or ISO.”

Press Release

LONDON, UK, 19th August 2009: Today Canon announces the PowerShot S90 – marking the return of the Canon PowerShot S-series. The PowerShot S90 continues the PowerShot S-series tradition with impressive, fully manual features that deliver excellent image quality and user experience, including:
Canon’s Dual Anti-Noise System with an f/2.0 wide-angle lens, a 3.0 inch, PureColor II LCD display and an intuitive new lens Control Ring.

Exceptional image quality in all conditions
The PowerShot S90 features Canon’s Dual Anti-Noise System, combining a high sensitivity 10.0 Megapixel image sensor with Canon’s enhanced DIGIC 4 image processor. Photographers can capture full resolution images – even in tricky lighting conditions – with the Dual Anti-Noise System taking maximum advantage of the available light, while substantially reducing image noise.

This is particularly useful in low-light portrait and landscape photography, where users are able to shoot high quality full resolution images even at ISO 3200. DIGIC 4 also includes an enhanced version of i-Contrast: Canon’s Intelligent Contrast Correction technology, which delivers a wider dynamic range to reduce high-light blowout while retaining low-light detail.

The f/2.0 Advantage
Canon has fitted the PowerShot S90 with a wide aperture f/2.0 wide-angle lens to help photographers take full advantage of the Dual Anti-Noise System. The f/2.0 wide-angle lens allows twice as much light into the camera as an f/2.8 lens, enabling photographers to use faster shutter speeds to reduce blur or achieve a shallower depth of field.

The camera also includes Canon’s optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, which uses a lens-shift system to minimise camera shake and image blur – effectively giving photographers a 4-stop advantage over less capable cameras.

To help users capture the perfect shot, the PowerShot S90 includes a 3.0 inch LCD display, which features Canon’s PureColor II LCD technology. It enables users to frame and review images easily thanks to an exceptionally wide viewing angle, 461k dot resolution and great colour rendition.

Sophisticated performance, sensational ease of use
As befits a camera of this calibre, the PowerShot S90 features a wide range of powerful manual and automatic controls that give photographers creative freedom.

The PowerShot S90 features an intuitive lens Control Ring, which enables users to adjust the settings of various functions by twisting the selector at the base of the lens barrel to the left or right. The Control Ring can be used as a quasi-manual zoom offering a closer view of subjects in 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm and 105mm steps.

Additional settings can be assigned, such as ISO (in 1/3 stop increments), shutter, aperture, focus and exposure compensation – giving photographers a satisfyingly tactile experience. The Control Ring also helps enhance user interaction with the camera by offering fast, accurate scrolling through menus, functions and images. In new Nostalgic Mode the Control Ring can also be used to add an aged effect to the shot, from a subtle faded look to full grainy black and white.

Smarter Scene Detection
For more creative control, users can also choose from a variety of Scene Modes (SCN on the Control dial) that enable them to choose the best settings for particular shooting situations – ideal for creative effects or when shooting in difficult lighting. A new Low Light mode can help users capture reduced resolution 2.5 Megapixel images in very dim light at ISO speeds of up to ISO 12800 and at a fast 2.4 frames per second.

Photographers can also choose from a range of creative modes including Aperture priority AE, Shutter priority AE, Program AE, Manual and Custom modes. Choosing and using different camera settings is now even easier thanks to an improved menu navigation system, which includes ‘Hints & Tips’ on most settings and features.

The PowerShot S90 allows fine custom adjustment of the camera’s white balance settings – enabling compensation of different kinds of tungsten, fluorescent and other light conditions for perfect results every time.

For quick and easy snaps, the PowerShot S90 includes Smart Auto with Scene Detection Technology. This selects the scene type from 22 variables, applying the best settings for optimum output – a great asset to those who love to point-and-shoot without worrying about the technical details. Smart Auto now measures movement of objects or people in a scene, activating Servo AF/AE to ensure that the focus and exposure are locked onto a subject.

In addition, the PowerShot S90 offers RAW format shooting and support for Canon’s Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software, making it easy to integrate the camera into a user’s digital workflow. Users will also find it easy to share images captured on the camera with family and friends, thanks to an HDMI mini port, which enables the camera to be connected to a compatible TV using an optional cable.

With a strong heritage and impressive range of features the PowerShot S90 is the ideal compact camera for technology and photographic enthusiasts alike.

“This is your camera if: – You need a DSLR camera with a 1.6x crop factor sensor for wildlife photography with telephoto lenses – Your style of photography absolutely needs fast burst rates and a large buffer capacity – You like the idea of shooting stills and HD video with the same camera – You like the idea of high ISO sensitivity range for still images and video – You need the ability of the EOS 5D Mark II without handing over $2100 more.”
“We really liked the feel of the EOS 7D — even it was a little heavy — it’s really an easy camera to use, even if you’re not familiar with Canon’s menu system.Low light photos were simply stunning and it had rich color in bright sunny conditions. Its burst mode is very cool. It pounded out nearly five frames per second, nice. Our only problems were with the focusing, which was at times a little off the marks.”
“Image quality is top notch apart from shooting above ISOs of 6400 and the purple fringing that shows up in some high contrast images. The 7D might not be the natural choice for those photographers 5D Mark II on their minds, but for those shooting sports or where longer focal lengths are needed for wildlife work, and you’re on a tighter budget, the 7D makes a lot more sense than the EOS 1D Mk III.”
“The Canon EOS 7D is an wonderfully versatile camera. Its powerful feature set make it one of the most complete DSLRs on the market. With its high-resolution sensor, wide range of ISO values, high-speed continuous drive, there is nothing too difficult for it. Its durable and weather-sealed body can be packed to more places than most cameras.”
“So the crux of it all is this – should you upgrade? Without a shadow of a doubt, we would recommend that whoever owns an xxD series to upgrade, because this is as good as it gets for a 1.6x crop camera. You can either choose to get current technology and enjoy it while you can, or you can wait a year to see what else Canon can deliver. In short, go get the 7D. You won’t regret it.”
“Just about the only area in which the 7D is significantly better than the D300S is its video mode. The D300S’ is seriously hampered – only five minutes of recording time per clip, a maximum of 720p resolution and the generally less impressive overall quality of Motion-JPEG compared to the 7D’s silky-smooth H.264 all make the 7D better for aspiring videographers.”
“The only real fly in the ointment is the official recommended retail price is starting to step on the toes of the 5D Mark II, which lacks some of the newer innovations and weather-sealing, but does offer that coveted 21 megapixel full-frame sensor and even better ISO performance.”
“In testing I did discover that the EOS 7D seems to record at a higher bit rate since its file size for the same recordings are always 16-18% larger than the file size from the 5D Mark II.”
“Frankly, the reason is that I am seeing things which I am not sure are a consequence of the camera’s inherent characteristics or are specific to pre-production cameras or even this specific camera. This includes overall image softness and some digital artifacting. Nothing terrible mind you; just enough though that I am aware of it, and therefore don’t want to make any undue assumptions.”
“Once in your hands, you can immediately feel the ergonomic improvements of the Canon EOS 7D camera, starting with a new super-fluid body design with continuous curves outlining the top of the camera and a revised grip that fits better in a user’s hand. The camera has a new Quick Control Button, which opens an easy-to-navigate menu on the camera’s LCD screen.”
“I was impressed with how much technology Canon has packed into the 7D. This is a serious mid-level professional digital SLR for serious photographers and it should gives its rivals in the HD video/APS-C sensor category — the Nikon D300s and Pentax K-7, in particular — a serious run for their money. But along with adding new features including a much sought-after 24p mode for its HD capture mode, Canon has rethought this entire category of camera with the 7D by making it photographically advanced yet highly usable.”
“Control layout and customization Given the fact the 7D isn’t that much bigger a camera, Canon has done well in dispensing with the 50D’s cramped button layout in favour of buttons that are larger, arranged mostly on the side of the rear LCD rather than below it and are easier to press.”
“Again, we only spent about 30 minutes face to face with a prototype, but even that was enough to realize that the 7D will be a strong contender with both videographers (with its increased framerate support) and photographers (with its enhanced auto-focus, rugged body and overhauled menus and custom functions) at a semi- or fully professional level. The only thing missing (and this will be a dealbreaker for many in the pro-leaning market, I imagine) is the full-frame sensor.”
“The Canon 7D is long overdue. It’s been rumored for something like five years, though most of those rumors spec’d it as a full-frame camera. But I think this is just right: I don’t think they could have included another important feature without making the Canon 7D look absurd. Okay, maybe a real AF-assist lamp is all that’s missing.”

DPReview (Preview)
“The 7D isn’t a 50D with a new sensor, viewfinder and revised body – other headline changes include a new AF system with a dedicated processor, dual Digic 4 processors and new shutter mechanism to allow 8fps continuous shooting and the ability to control groups of external flashguns using its built-in flash. However, the updates extend beyond these big-feature changes to include a variety of tweaks, refinements and additions. Make no mistake, Canon wants to be the default choice again.”
“To sum it up; the Canon EOS 7D is an advanced semi-pro DSLR camera which incorporates several technology from the professional EOS-series, yet also features many new technologies and innovations applied to an EOS camera for the first time. Mainly creative photographers will feel invited by the 7D to take that extra step. The support you gain from the high-end technology really gives the photographer the feeling it was his own hand that captured that one incredible photo moment.”
Press

Press Release

London, UK, 1 September 2009: Canon today unveils the EOS 7D digital SLR camera – a completely new design to meet the specific demands of photographers. Incorporating a new 18MP APS-C CMOS Sensor, developed by Canon, the EOS 7D also features: Dual “DIGIC 4” processors to offer fast, high-quality performance in all light conditions, an ISO range expandable to 12,800 and continuous shooting at 8 frames per second – without the need for additional accessories. Impressive technologies are matched by excellent build-quality designed with the photographer in mind – to create a whole new photographic experience.

During extensive development Canon went back to the drawing board, listening to photographers worldwide in order to design the EOS 7D to meet their specific needs. Commenting on the creation of the EOS 7D, Mr. Shinbori, Deputy Group Executive of Photo Products Group & Senior General Manager of Camera Development Center, Canon Inc,said “We consulted over 5,000 photographers worldwide and asked them what they most wanted to see from a camera. Matching this insight with cutting-edge technology, we were able to develop a camera that truly gives photographers the versatile tool they require to experiment with their images.”

Accurate Images – High performance AF and metering systems

The EOS 7D features a 19-point cross-type AF sensor, enabling photographers to achieve accurate shots and optimise composition options. This improved AF system offers a range of manual and automatic settings including Zone and Spot AF to track and capture subjects quickly and accurately. AF settings are highly customisable, allowing for rapid reaction to changes in the scene. Different AF points can be set for vertical or horizontal orientation, so photographers can automatically switch between landscape and portrait shots without touching a button.

The EOS 7D also incorporates a new metering system. The Focus Colour Luminance metering system (iFCL) intelligently measures focus, colour and luminance, across 63 zones. Complementing the 19 AF points, the dual layer sensor is able to gather information from each distinct zone to obtain a more accurate and consistent exposure.

Capture images exactly as you see them

The Canon EOS 7D features an Intelligent Viewfinder that offers photographers 100 per cent frame coverage. With 1.0x magnification* – a first for EOS – photographers see a large bright image that helps to fully immerse them within the shot. A transmissive LCD incorporated in the viewfinder allows photographers to choose between various overlay features – such as AF points, the spot metering circle and composition grid – providing a range of tools that help when framing a shot. The EOS 7D is also the first EOS to introduce a Dual-Axis Electronic Level – in the viewfinder and on the LCD – that indicates both pitch and roll angles. This feature is particularly useful when shooting landscapes to ensure a level horizon, or when used in conjunction with a Tilt and Shift lens to level the camera.

The camera features a new 3 inch Clear View II LCD screen with a solid structure screen, designed to combat glare by removing the air-gap between the LCD’s protective cover and the liquid crystal. This new screen has a viewing angle of 160 degrees and is effective even in bright light. As with the EOS 5D Mark II, an ambient light sensor on the side of the screen can set brightness automatically depending on the environment.

Experiment creatively with light

The Canon EOS 7D is equipped with an Integrated Speedlite Transmitter. For the first time in an EOS, photographers can control external Speedlites with no additional accessories – ideal for those looking to experiment with creative lighting set-ups. The EOS 7D also features an extensively upgraded, built-in flash including manual control, and wider flash coverage to cover focal lengths as wide as 15mm.

Customize your individual camera experience

The EOS 7D has been conceived and designed with the photographer’s needs in mind. The look and feel of the camera has been aesthetically and ergonomically crafted to offer photographers the very best interaction. To this end, the photographer can design their own experience – camera operations are customisable, allowing the user to assign frequently used functions and settings to convenient controls. This enables photographers to save time when shooting critical moments, by changing settings quickly.
Impressive Features, Impressive Images

The Canon EOS 7D is packed with new features:

- 18 MP APS–C CMOS Sensor
Designed and manufactured by Canon, the sensor produces an outstanding image and offers fantastic performance at high and low conditions, thanks to a new photodiode and microlens construction.
- 8 fps image capture
Enabled by the Dual “DIGIC 4” processors and improved electrical system, photographers can capture images at 8fps, without the need for additional accessories and in all file types.
- ISO Range
The EOS 7D enables photographers to capture subjects in their natural light. The ISO range (100 – 6,400) is expandable to 12,800.
- EOS Movie
With improved operation, making it easy to switch directly to movie mode, it is now even simpler to shoot Full HD video. Users can set exposure and frame rate – with options for 24 fps to create that cinematic feel.
- Dual “DIGIC 4” processors
By utilising Dual “DIGIC 4” processors, users of the EOS 7D never have to compromise between shooting speed, image quality and ISO performance.
- Impressive Design
Canon has listened to photographer feedback when designing the body, as well as the internal technologies. A magnesium alloy body offers environmental protection – the tough, lightweight construction is designed to defend against moisture, and dust – equivalent to the legendary EOS–1N.

The camera is compatible with a wide range of accessories so it can easily be integrated with a photographer’s workflow. The Wireless File Transmitter (WFT-E5) allows extensive camera control via a web browser – allowing photographers to control the camera using a web-enabled mobile device.

The EOS 7D is compatible with all EF and EF-S lenses as well as Canon EX Speedlites. The Canon EOS 7D can also be used with Battery BG-E7, and remote controllers and switches such as the remote Controller RC-1/RC-5.

* with 50mm lens at infinity, -1(1/m) dpt

Technologies Explained:

Canon CMOS sensor

The EOS 7D includes a new 18 megapixel CMOS sensor with a wide ISO range that delivers excellent results in both the low and high-speed ranges as well as improved image quality. The sensor is a standard APS-C size (22.4×14.9mm) and produces an effective field of view of 1.6x the lens focal length.

The EOS 7D sensor features condensed circuitry with improved sensitivity and increased capacity of the photodiodes, which enables shooting at high ISO and prevents overloading when shooting in bright conditions. The ISO range (100 – 6400) is expandable to 12800 enabling photographers to capture subjects in their natural light without the use of a flash.

The EOS 7D sensor includes gapless microlenses that have been moved closer to the photodiodes. These technological advances, which were developed and manufactured by Canon, improve the signal to noise ratio creating very clean high ISO images.

19-point cross-type AF system including Spot AF

The AF system has been completely redesigned using the same architecture as the EOS-1 series and includes a separate processor to handle AF calculations. This, along with AI SERVO II AF, enables the EOS 7D to offer accurate, reliable and continuous shooting at 8fps. Uniquely at this level, all 19 points in the EOS 7D AF sensor are cross-type points with f/5.6 or faster lenses, which allows sophisticated tracking, accuracy and performance throughout the frame.

EOS 7D also includes Spot AF, a new mode that uses a smaller area of the sensor to determine focus. This is useful for small subjects where there is background detail that can distract the AF sensor. It also includes Zone AF which limits automatic selection to one of five zones. This allows photographers to ensure their subject is automatically selected.

iFCL metering system with 63-zone Dual-layer Sensor

The iFCL system uses Focus, Colour and Luminance information to determine consistently exposed shots. All focus points provide distance information to the metering system to determine proximity to the subject and allow the algorithm to weight the exposure accordingly. EOS 7D has a completely new metering sensor with 63 zones compatible with 19 AF points. Typically, metering sensors are more sensitive to red subjects which can lead to overexposure. EOS 7D combats this with the dual layer sensor, which has one layer sensitive to red and green light and one that is sensitive to blue and green light. The metering algorithm then compares the level of the two layers and adjusts the meter reading accordingly.

100% Viewfinder with 1.0x magnification and built in LCD overlay

The EOS 7D features a high quality viewfinder with 100% coverage and 1.0x magnification – a first for EOS – making it simple and ease to use. The viewfinder uses a prism, coating technologies and eyepiece lenses inspired by the EOS-1 series.

EOS 7D viewfinder does not have interchangeable focussing screens. In their place is a Transmissive LCD Screen – another first for EOS. Through technological advances Canon has been able to implement the screen whilst maintaining viewfinder image quality. This new feature, which can be illuminated in lowlight, enables grid, spot metering and AF points to be superimposed upon demand.

EOS Movie

The EOS 7D features an improved movie function allowing users to record Full HD movies with full manual control and selectable frame rates. The operation of the movie function has been improved to make it easier to use via direct access to settings with dedicated buttons. AF can now be started by either half pressing the shutter button or using the AF-ON button as before.

The exposure of the movie can be controlled in Manual mode allowing full control of shutter speeds and apertures. It is possible to select frame rates from: 30 (29.97), 25, and 24 (23.976), with 60 (59.94) and 50 available at 720p. ISO can be set automatically or manually in the range (100-6400) and is expandable to 12800. EOS 7D also allows users to trim and cut their movies.

Dual “DIGIC 4”

EOS 7D is fitted with Dual “DIGIC 4” processors; the power of the processors enables more advanced processing algorithms allowing the camera to achieve a high performance 8fps at 18 megapixels.

DIGIC 4 removes the highly noticeable colour noise as well as reducing luminance noise without loss in detail, allowing for very clean high ISO images. Even at ISO 6400 noise levels are similar to those of ISO 1600 from DIGIC III. Auto Lighting Optimiser is now also available during manual exposure, without any drop in performance.

DIGIC 4 also allows UDMA cards (mode 6) to be used at their full speed, which allows the EOS 7D to take advantage of the fastest cards available.

Clear View II

EOS 7D’s 3 inch LCD monitor has 920,000 dots (VGA resolution) with a viewing angle of 160°. Clear View II has been designed to combat glare by removing the air-gap between the LCD’s protective cover and the liquid crystal. The air-gap is filled with an elastic optical material. This has the affect of suppressing the reflections from the surface of the liquid crystal, caused by the sharp change in refractive index, as light travels through the air-gap. In order to protect the liquid crystal from scratches the Clear View II LCD features a hardened glass cover material. As with the EOS 5D Mark II, an ambient light sensor on the side of the screen can set brightness automatically depending on the environment.

“The camera is generally a good performer, but it does have some lens distortion when it’s at its widest angle, and we did notice some anti-noise processing affects at all ISOs. Bottom line, the SD1200 delivers accurate color and good photo quality. This is a great pack everywhere camera for people looking for quality at a reasonable price, and because of that it receives our recommendation.”
“The Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS/Digital IXUS 95 IS is an attractive camera, but we found it a little too compact and awkward to use long-term. That said, while you won’t ?nd any real surprises with the device, the image quality it delivers is great, but bear in mind the high price.”
“Photo quality is very good for its class. Better than most, actually, the photo quality is probably why this camera costs a bit more than the competition. Colors are generally excellent, as is exposure, though there was occasional highlight clipping.”
“There’s not much more to say about this Canon. It’s decent for taking snapshots at parties or while traveling, but its image quality won’t be great. You’ll be able to print images at 4×6in or A4 size with good clarity, as long as you don’t crop them too much — the more you crop the images, the more the artifacts and aberrations will become noticeable.”
“If you’re looking for a camera you can take anywhere, which is easy to use and looks smart, then the PowerShot SD1200 IS/Ixus 95 IS is a strong candidate. However, you can find better specified compacts for less, offering superior performance, although, admittedly, you’d be hard pressed to find a more compact model. Still, in its price range, the PowerShot SD1200 IS/Ixus 95 IS faces some pretty stiff competition, which you should keep in mind before you flash the cash for this model.”
“This is a camera that fulfills my need for a small pocketable camera – and I mean shirt pocket or jeans – that takes good images, has quick performance, and is built to last. Let me tell you this camera is tiny and light weight. It’s has the same dimensions as a credit card and is under an inch thick. Wow!”
“At this price the SD1200 IS is definitely worth considering for all of the features it comes with. It is a reasonably priced point-and-shoot that gives the photographer plenty of options. With a 12x combined zoom, Smart Auto mode, 10.0 megapixels and a sleek, small body, this camera packs much of the versatility of a larger camera into a phone-sized unit. It has its pros and cons, but on the whole I would endorse the purchase of this camera for the casual or beginning photographer.”
“The Canon IXUS 95 IS is one of the best pocket cameras you can buy. It takes sharp, colourful photos in almost any typical situation. This is one of the few smaller cameras to include a viewfinder. It also has a 2.5 inch LCD screen.”
“We can’t even nit pick this time about the levels of noise apparent in the mid to high ISO range. The IXUS 95 IS acquits itself in this area better than many of its competitors and indeed appears improved on its forebear. Shame its colours are slightly drab when the camera is left on its default settings, but as we’ve noted, by switching to Program mode and selecting the ‘Vivid’ colour option, such grumbles are silenced.”
“The IXUS 95 IS would be a great camera for someone who didn’t have to pay for it and had little to compare it to. It’s pretty, smart and easy to use, and produces decent quality pictures that few casual users could find fault with. But the froth of new tech can’t hide the desperately ordinary camera underneath.”
“There is not much not to like about the SD1200, although its image quality does not approach the famous Fuji F-series’ high-ISO nor the F200 EXR’s high dynamic-range, it produces images of good quality and performs admirably well in all areas except exposure with its tendency to over-expose in order to produce a bright image at the expense of highlight details.”

Press Excerpt

Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 18 February 2009: Canon today strengthens its reputation for excellence in digital compact camera design with two new models: the slimmest ever Digital IXUS model, the 12.1 Megapixel Digital IXUS 100 IS, and the 10 Megapixel Digital IXUS 95 IS. Both models feature a new Smart Auto mode, which uses Canon’s Scene Detection Technology to help users take great shots with ease. The Digital IXUS 100 IS also includes the option to shoot HD movies (1280 x 720, 30fps) and HDMI connectivity.

Replacing the Digital IXUS 85 IS, the Digital IXUS 100 IS features a striking, 18.4mm wide stainless steel body, finished in a choice of silver, black, gold or red – making it ideal for the most prestigious of occasions. The Digital IXUS 95 IS, successor to the Digital IXUS 80 IS, offers an ultra-stylish, take-anywhere alternative in silver, grey, blue or pink. Both models offer framing flexibility via a 3.0x optical zoom, with consistently blur-free results provided by Canon’s optical Image Stabilizer.

Built for stunning images
Generous resolutions of 10.0 Megapixels and 12.1 Megapixels allow for huge A2+ size prints or the freedom to crop images to improve composition while retaining outstanding image detail. The addition of Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor allows both models to deliver ultra-fast operation, and rich, low-noise images with outstanding clarity and colour reproduction.

Beauty and brains
For incredible pictures with extreme ease, both models incorporate a new
Smart Auto mode. This uses Canon’s Scene Detection Technology to analyse the shooting scene in detail – checking subject brightness, contrast, distance and overall hue. The camera then instantly selects one of 18 possible modes, to ensure perfect settings for the scene.

Thanks to DIGIC 4 processing, Canon’s intelligent technologies are now more accurate than ever. Improved Motion Detection aids blur-free capture of moving subjects. i-Contrast brightens the dark areas of a photo without blowing out correctly-exposed areas. Face Detection Technology can register multiple faces in a frame and adjusts settings for better results; with the Digital IXUS 100 IS, this includes new Blink Detection, which helps avoid the disappointment of a mistimed portrait shot. FaceSelf-Timer simplifies group shots or self portraits by waiting until the user enters the frame before shooting. Auto Red-Eye Correction removes the unwanted red-eye effect caused by flash photography, either during or after shooting.

In addition, both models offer a smarter, newly improved User Interface – making functions even easier and more intuitive to access.

Movies and more
Despite its tiny proportions, the Digital IXUS 100 IS includes the ability to shoot pin-sharp, ultra-detailed video clips in High Definition (1280 x 720) – which can be played back on any HDTV via an HDMI connection. The Digital IXUS 95 IS offers fun movie capture at VGA resolution, with the option of Long Play movies for extended shooting.

“This camera helped me create a style of photography that was more creative than normal, you name it and I could do it. Would you like to do the same? Snag this Canon, find some water, bright sun, some friends and/or bright objects and with the help of this camera your creativity will explode! I really liked this camera. However, it’s too bad Canon didn’t make the zoom wider which would have substantially help the underwater shooting capability.
“The quality of the images produced by the D10 is up to Canon’s usual standards, and there’s no quality premium to pay for choosing an underwater camera in preference to a general purpose compact.”
“The price, although at the upper end of compact cameras, is reasonable considering the versatility of the D10. The performance is very much in line with models from the top of the IXUS range, which is a good thing: imaging hasn’t suffered to give you the weatherproofing.”
“If you don’t mind the bulky build and toy-like design, the Canon PowerShot D10 is a solid choice for a rugged, waterproof camera. This speedy underwater shooter offers excellent image quality and a well-rounded, albeit simple, feature set.”
“The PowerShot D10’s performance and image quality are pretty typical of other rugged point-and-shoots, so what makes it stands out would be its design. While Canon claims the linear optics will offer users better-looking pictures, a non-discerning eye would probably not be able to tell the difference. That said, it is still an advantage if you are fussy about image quality.”
“I would recommend the Canon PowerShot D10 to anyone who needs a tough camera that can handle all the rigors of daily life (and more) thrown at it. Canon certainly did a lot of homework when they entered the rugged camera arena – the PowerShot D10 is a well-rounded camera in terms of design (no pun intended), performance and image quality output. The only big thing that may set you off is the D10’s size – compared to the pocketable competition, this thing is huge; and no, it doesn’t fit into your pants pocket.”
“As a photographer, I can’t ignore the noise problems and I think this is the camera’s only real failing. It takes some getting used to with its unusual design but it soon grows on you. There are a few waterproof compacts available and I think if a fast start up time is a priority then you need this camera.”
“If you’re buying a camera with hopes of making big prints (larger than 8×10 inches) of what you shoot, the D10 is your best bet. The low ISO performance from it is very good. Image noise is in short supply below ISO 200, and fine detail and sharpness were noticeably better than other cameras in its class.”

Photo Review
“Low light performance was well above average with no noise visible up to ISO 400. Noise began to appear at ISO 800 and at 1600 and, due to automatic noise-reduction processing, images looked noticeably softer than shots taken at low ISO settings.”
“If you are in the market for an indestructible camera you have a choice between products from Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax and now Canon. Each has its merits, but of them all we like the Canon best. We particularly like its weird Captain Nemo shape – a 1960s underwater sci-fi design. If we were planning world domination in a home-made submarine this is the camera we would have on board.”
“Overall, the bulky form factor might not make the PowerShot D10 the prettiest of cameras, but that’s partly the point. The rugged and durable design is made for tough and challenging situations in the elements, of which it performs really well under those circumstances. However, it’s reasonably priced, so if you’re looking for something that might fit your summer plans, then the D10 could work for you.”
“All told, Canon’s PowerShot D10 is a stellar adventure camera. It’s more than just a waterproof camera that’s only marginally larger than a standard P&S, it’s a rugged, lightweight shooter that should suit most everyone but the professionals in attendance. If you’ve already got a DSLR for your serious shooting, there’s no reason the D10 can’t be your one and only point-and-shoot companion, regardless of whether you’re in or out of the drink. And as for you argonauts — well, you’d just need a darn good excuse to avoid this.”
“The Canon worked fine in freezing conditions, though the LCD display was more sluggish than at normal temperatures. Underwater, the D10 proved fine and the LCD’s wide angle of view will prove useful for close-ups at awkward angles.”
“The Powershot D10 has a distinctive, fun look that means it will not get mistaken for any other digital camera. It has a number of robust features and is waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof to varying degrees. It takes a good snap and is well worth a close look.”
“Canon has a knack for working up ordinary technology into great-looking products, and that’s never been truer than with the PowerShot D10. Let’s face it: 12 megapixels and a 3x optical zoom are ordinary, but the outlandish styling, classy colour scheme and 10m depth rating mean the D10 just about pulls it off.”
“There really isn’t much to complain about with the D10. It’s cheaper than the closest competitor from Olympus, it goes a little deeper than many of the other underwater cameras in its class, and it has the toughest wrist strap ever to grace a compact digital. I’ve been using Canons for more than 10 years and I’ve only been disappointed once. That’s because Canon seems to know what consumers want and they deliver cameras that are affordable, easy to use, feature rich, fairly compact, relatively quick, and capable of consistently producing excellent images.”

Imaging Resource
“Speed is good, about as fast as the average digital camera, and its video mode also works well above and below the water. Where it has trouble is in the corners and sides of images, which are softer than we like to see. You won’t notice this softness in your underwater pictures, just the open-air shots. But that limitation alone keeps the Canon D10 from serving as an all-purpose digital camera unless you only plan to print 4×6-inch images.”
“For Canon, moving from making conventional cameras to something like the D10 must have been quite challenging, and I for one am mighty impressed. It definitely needs improvement with overall picture quality, video implementation and its overall design and looks. But for the price, this is a sweet deal for those who live on the ‘fun’ side of life. I’m sure we’ll see a lot more improvements to the D10 in the future.”
“We also like the clear pictures it takes, but we wish it rendered images with more contrast. By default it captures images that look too pale. However, that’s something that can be fixed during post-processing. So if you’re after a ruggedised camera for snorkelling, or just to use while you hang around the pool, the Canon PowerShot D10 is worth considering.”
“It is not cheap, especially when you consider that you can get a decent DSLR for the same price. That said, you can’t use your DSLR underwater without any protection. As a camera for using in extreme conditions, the PowerShot D10 offers a lot, but in order to take advantage of this, users will have to settle for some compromises in terms of features and performance.”
“It only really makes sense if you’re going to take full advantage of its water-, shock-, freeze- and dust-proof qualities. Viewed in that light, the $329.99 / £379.00 / €449.00 price-tag suddenly doesn’t seem quite so steep. A decent compact camera with a separate underwater housing would cost as much, if not more, than the PowerShot D10, and you wouldn’t get the other benefits or convenience either. The D10 will mostly appeal to the more active user, but is still a good bet simply for taking to the beach this summer.”
“This is one versatile little camera. On top of that, the D10 offers blazing fast performance, so you can be confident that you are going to capture that shot when you press the shutter button. With a street price of about US$329, the PowerShot D10 is obviously more expensive than your typical 12-megapixel compact digicam. However, in this weatherproof category, the D10 is competitively priced, and rivals the performance and quality of many of its competitors.”
Press

Press Excerpt

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., February 17, 2009 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today introduced 10 new PowerShot cameras that offer an array of photographic options for the entry-level consumer right up to the photo enthusiast. Whether on a family vacation, swimming in an ocean or out for a night on the town, the new line-up of PowerShot digital cameras enable consumers to customize their photographic experience to their personality with color, style and features galore.

Most PowerShot cameras for 2009 feature Canon’s exclusive DIGIC 4 Image Processor, with proprietary technology which accounts for the camera’s higher performance levels, including improved signal processing speed and higher image quality. This new chip paves the way for a host of features including Canon’s new Smart AUTO. Smart AUTO intelligently selects the proper camera settings based on the specific shooting conditions of each scene, ensuring that all images are accurately focused, exposed, stabilized and white-balanced before the shutter is even pressed. Using data derived from Canon’s Optical Image Stabilization, Genuine Face Detection and Motion Detection Technologies, Smart AUTO automatically adjusts a multitude of settings including brightness and hue, during various shooting situations. Another enhancement available with select PowerShot models is Blink Detection Technology, which uses the Face Detection function to display an icon after shooting with a warning that someone’s eyes were closed (such as when blinking) during shooting. Unlike other systems which prevent users from taking a photo, Canon’s Blink Detection Technology lets users know immediately whether there’s any need to reshoot the image, thus providing a far more intuitive experience.

A third technological advancement with select PowerShot cameras is Active Display, which is used for quickly switching between images during playback. Instead of culling through a long line of images, via a control dial, Active Display advances pictures simply with a gentle shake of the wrist, making the viewing and sharing of pictures more fun and enjoyable.

“The power of the Canon PowerShot series is its ability to enhance consumers’ enjoyment of photography through its unique combination of ease-of-use, affordability, and personalization,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. “We are excited about this year’s PowerShot line-up because Canon’s cameras are loaded with advanced technologies and design options, thus enabling consumers to have the ultimate photographic experience.”

Canon PowerShot D10 Digital Camera
Consumers looking for an all-around waterproof, freeze proof and shockproof camera should look no further.
