TrustedReviews—”The Nikon CoolPix S225 a very pretty little camera. It is well made, sensibly designed and performs reasonably well. It is lacking in interesting features, but it is very easy to use. It has excellent high-ISO noise control, but unfortunately it is badly let down by inferior lens quality and restricted dynamic range. “

Pocket-lint—”The battery life is better than the S230 sibling as you’d expect, giving you a cited 160 shots from a full charge, which we found to be around the right marker – it should give you enough to get through a typical wedding, for example. “

Buy-n-Shoot—“While some lens, LCD, and image quality is sacrificed in the Coolpix S220 for its affordable price tag and ultra compact body, overall this unit undoubtedly offers a lot of style and portability for a very little asking price. One certainly worth considering if looking to purchase a stylish but positively simple compact camera within this price range.”

cnet reviews—”The good: Great design; very compact; well priced; very good features for its class. The bad: Mediocre photo quality; slow performance. The bottom line: The Nikon Coolpix S220 is an adequate, inexpensive choice for social-network-loving photographers.”

DPInterface—”The Nikon Coolpix S220 is a cheaper, non-touchscreen version of the Coolpix S230. The camera packs the same lens, sensor and most features. Unfortunately, the Coolpix S230 wasn’t flawless, and neither is the Coolpix S220 here.”

GoodGearGuide—”The Nikon CoolPix S220 wasn’t brilliant when it came to our speed tests. Although start-up took less than a second, you’ll have to wait a further 3 seconds before your first shot. This is pretty lethargic by modern camera standards and may lead to the occasional lost opportunity(an intoxicated chum teetering and then falling into a pool, say). “

Cameras.co.uk—”The Nikon Coolpix S220 has a lot going for it. If I was being picky I would say picture quality could be that bit better, but there is only so much you can expect from such a small camera at this lower price.”

Cameras.uk—“This pocket camera is very different to most of its competitors. It has a number of exciting features such as a 10 frames per second burst mode, High Definition movies, sweep panorama and a handheld twilight mode that aims to reduce noise once lighting levels fall. It you are on the lookout for a digital camera packed with the latest features then take a look at the Sony Cybershot DSC TX1.”

Imaging Resource—“Oh, the Sony TX1 is a Dave’s Pick all right, let’s get that out of the way right now. It has the technical wonders required to earn one, starting with the new Exmor R sensor’s increased light sensitivity, the responsive widescreen, touch-sensitive LCD, and some innovative shooting modes.”

PhotographyBlog—“For its hefty price we would expect a lot more photographer friendly features which puts in an awkward position where the beginner will not be interested because of price and more experienced shooters will be turned off by the lack of features. However, the TX1 produces outstanding image results, it’s too bad it could not strike a fair balance between style, price, and features. All that aside this camera is worth taking a second look at if you’re after the best point-and-shoot.”

Digital Trends—“We have to look at this camera as a version-0.9 offering. Although it’s almost fully developed, it’s not all the way there. Sweep Panorama and Handheld Twilight are really good features, as is the 10-frames-per-second shooting. Yet colors were uneven, and focusing isn’t as good or accurate as we’d like. Given these issues, this one is hard to recommend. Hopefully, the implementation of Exmor R technology in the WX1 or future models will resolve these issues.”

CNET.au—“The TX1 is a great advancement in the compact camera sector, better low-light ability and photo quality instead of more megapixels. It still has some ground to make up relative to photo processing and a better lens, but still, this camera is one of the most slender, most well defined bodies we have seen in a long time.”

Competing with similar cameras from Panasonic and Canon the HZ15W offers 720p video recording, full manual controls and an impressive zoom range from 24mm wide angle up to 240mm telephoto. The zoom range isn’t as large as the 12x zoom offered by its competitors, but it is the widest angle lens on a camera in this class. We are a bit annoyed by the lack of thought put into the manual mode, however. Switching between aperture and shutter control is unintuitive. This is probably our biggest annoyance, and if you can live with it there’s a lot to like in the Samsung HZ15W.”

Digital Camera Resource—”The HZ15W won’t win any awards for its documentation. The only printed thing you’ll find in the box is a leaflet to get you up and running. For more details, you’ll want to open up the full manual, which is included in PDF form on a CD-ROM. The quality of the manuals themselves is typical of those from major consumer electronics manufacturers — average, at best. Documentation for the included software is installed onto your computer.”

The bad: Subpar photo quality; menu system too spread out. The bottom line: The Samsung HZ15W has good parts and features, but ultimately disappoints on the whole.”

PhotographyBLOG—”Like its predecessor the Canon Digital IXUS 95 IS can best be summed up as an undemanding snapper for the unpretentious photographer. Again the sturdiness of its build quality is very impressive, as is speed of operation, design, and overall ease of use. There’s no media card bundled with the camera this time, but since SD or SDHC cards can now be found in your local supermarket it’s hardly a deal breaker.”

DigitalCameraReview—”At a price of $230, this camera is definitely worth considering for all of the features it comes with. It is a reasonably priced point-and-shoot that gives the photographer plenty of options.”

Register Hardware—”If you’re looking for a camera you can take anywhere, which is easy to use and looks smart, then the Ixus 95 IS is a strong candidate. However, you can find better specified compacts for less, offering superior performance, although, admittedly, you’d be hard pressed to find a more compact model. Still, with that £219 price tag, the Ixus 95 IS faces some pretty stiff competition, which you should keep in mind before you flash the cash for this model.”

cnet reviews—”Simple and stylish, the Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS is a fine back-pocket camera as long as your photo-quality expectations are reasonable.”

ImagingResource —”Small, very user-friendly and capable in most situations, the Canon SD1200 upholds the ELPH reputation for style and quality. With a 10-megapixel CCD and 3x optical zoom lens, the PowerShot SD1200 IS gets high-resolution images with good quality. Its Smart Auto mode is trustworthy in its ability to assess most common shooting situations and gets better images than you would with a straight autoexposure mode. Plus, features like automatic Optical Image Stabilization and Face Detection help you get good images under more difficult circumstances without even thinking twice about it. Another plus is that the Canon SD1200 provides some manual controls when you want them, such as metering mode, white balance, and ISO. Performance is generally good, though some distortion on the lens at wide-angle makes its way into a few shots, and anti-noise processing affects detail at all ISOs. However, overall performance is quite good, with believable color and good image quality.”

CNET UK—”The IXUS 95 IS would be a great camera for someone who didn’t have to pay for it and had little to compare it to. It’s pretty, smart and easy to use, and produces decent quality pictures that few casual users could find fault with. But the froth of new tech can’t hide the desperately ordinary camera underneath. “

Cameras.co.uk—”I would say that the Canon IXUS 95 IS offers the best value for money out of the three pocket models introduced by Canon in the spring of 2009. It offers very good all round picture quality and has a great start up time.”

Photography Review—“This is a camera that fulfills my need for a small pocketable camera – and I mean shirt pocket or jeans – that takes good images, has quick performance, and is built to last. Let me tell you this camera is tiny and light weight. It’s has the same dimensions as a credit card and is under an inch thick. ”

GoodGearGuide—“There’s not much more to say about this Canon. It’s decent for taking snapshots at parties or while traveling, but its image quality won’t be great. You’ll be able to print images at 4×6in or A4 size with good clarity, as long as you don’t crop them too much — the more you crop the images, the more the artifacts and aberrations will become noticeable.”

TechRadar—”The Canon Digital IXUS 95 IS is an attractive camera, but we found it a little too compact and awkward to use long-term. That said, while you won’t find any real surprises with the device, the image quality it delivers is great, but bear in mind the high price.”

PhotographyBLOG—”Despite the fact that Olympus has revamped its formerly rather tired looking menu icons and provided users with a funkier if cartoon-ish interface, plus shoehorned in some creative effects filters and user friendly features, the Mju 7010 is an otherwise fairly run-of-the-mill snapshot camera for the money. You can’t help coming away from testing the Olympus for a week without feeling that Canon, Panasonic and Sony can all do this sort of thing better (albeit for £50 more if you’d like a model with HD movie capability).”

Personal Computer World—”A camera that can do a lot without the operator knowing much about photography, though the video option is poor.”

TrustedReviews—”The mju-7010 is an interesting looking camera with a decent specification. Build quality and finish are of a high standard, it is versatile and easy to use, and it is capable of producing good results in most normal situations. However its poor low light performance, limited battery duration, lack of advanced features and relatively high price make it less appealing in comparison to some very capable rivals.”

Cameras.co.uk—”The Sony Cybershot DSC H20 gets most things right. There is plenty of competition, but this camera provides a reliable alternative to models from Panasonic and Canon. “

CameraLabs—”The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20 is an affordable super-zoom compact with a 10x stabilised lens and HD video recording capabilities. Slightly larger than the average compact, it’s nonetheless smaller than most cameras with zooms of this range and will fit in a jacket pocket.”

CNET UK—”The main problem with the H20 is that it lacks a wide-angle zoom. Otherwise though, its responsiveness, handling and controls make it a great camera to use. It’s very effective at full zoom too, which is where many rival compact superzooms struggle. Finally, the rather good HD movie mode is a major selling point on its own. “

PhotographyBlog—”The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20 is much more than an incremental upgrade to last year’s H10. With this camera, Sony has demonstrated that it is a company which listens to user feedback, as most of the issues we criticised the H10 for have been addressed. The engineers have redesigned the handgrip and the controls, added important features like custom white balance and HD video recording with zoom, and improved those aspects of image quality that needed to be addressed, including automatic white balance, colour, noise, dynamic range and chromatic aberrations. These enhancements have transformed the Sony H20 into one of only a handful of digital cameras that manage to achieve maximum user satisfaction with a minimum of frustration.”

CNET—”The good: First-rate design; simple operation; excellent feature-to-price ratio. The bad: Narrow lens; lens cap is a pain. The bottom line: If you don’t mind its extra bulk and narrow lens, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20 is an otherwise excellent compact megazoom camera.”

CNET Asia—”With its wealth of features, the FZ35 is a good choice for enthusiasts especially those who want to experience how handling a dSLR is like. Features-wise, the Lumix’s rivals offer slightly higher specifications, though the tradeoff is that they are a tad more bulky and heavier. So do keep these factors in mind before making your decision.”

ImagingResource—”There’s nothing quite like a long zoom that can capture a room without backing you into a wall or reach across a meadow to snap some shy wildlife. They will never be small but they are getting compact. The Panasonic FZ35 is one of the finer specimens I tested this summer.”

DigitalTrends—”The Lumix DMC-FZ35 costs around $325 at legit online outlets. At this price, the camera is a good deal, especially for travelers and people who take their cameras with them everywhere. It takes solid photos, has a quality wide-angle mega-zoom, is easy to use, and records superior movie clips. Just don’t expect true DSLR performance.”

DPExpert—”This camera certainly has the numbers. 12 megapixels. 18X zoom. All for $770, that has to be good, doesn’t it? So why does Panasonic charge $830 for the Lumix LX3 which sports a mere 10 megapixels, a 2.5X zoom and no eye-level viewfinder? And why is that camera so popular that the company cannot make enough to meet demand? Do the words “free” and “lunch” spring to mind?”

Trusted Reviews—”My verdict on the FZ38 is pretty much the same as for its predecessor. If you’ve already got an FZ28 it’s probably not enough of an improvement to justify an upgrade. However for anyone else looking for a new super-zoom camera they really don’t come much better than this. Build quality, handling, features, performance, image quality and versatility are superior to any of its immediate rivals, and the excellent video quality is icing on the cake. To get anything better than this you’ll have to move up to a DSLR. “

DCResource—”The manual situation has taken a turn for the worse on the Lumix DMC-FZ35. Panasonic no longer includes a full, printed manual in the box. Instead, you get a roughly 35 page “Basic Manual” which is, well, very basic. For more details, you’ll need to load up the full manual, which is on an included CD-ROM disc. That manual will answer all the questions you could possibly have, but I would much prefer a printed manual to a digital one. Neither of the manuals are what I’d call user friendly, with lots of fine print and confusing tables. Documentation for the included software is installed onto your computer.”

CameraLabs—”It’s very important to carefully consider the pros and cons of the Canon against the Panasonic, and think about how they’ll relate to your photographic requirements. We’ve detailed the differences above, and the Canon certainly looks strong with its articulated screen and flash hotshoe, but you may find the RAW mode, manual exposures for movies, effective fringe-correction and slightly superior AF and stabilisation capabilities of the FZ38 / FZ35 more useful. It is however interesting to note now the Canon has 720p movies, the Panasonic fitted with stereo sound and both feature HDMI ports, these rival super-zooms are growing ever-closer. Ultimately one doesn’t take a decisive overall lead over the other, and it boils down to comparing feature-sets and handling for yourself. Suffice it to say both are great super-zoom cameras.”

PhotographyBlog—”The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38 builds on the proven design of its predecessor, the FZ28, making few handling changes but adding a number of significant new features that comprise a better overall package. We’re a little disappointed that Panasonic haven’t extended the reach of the 18x zoom lens to match its main rivals, but the 27-486mm focal length is still a very versatile one, especially given the addition of the slightly more effective Power OIS anti-shake system that reduces the overall number of blurry shots.”

The bad: Leisurely performance; battery charging done in camera might bother some; tricky to hold. The bottom line: The Nikon Coolpix S70 has a top-notch touch-screen interface and eye-catching design, but you’re definitely paying for them.”

Pocket-lint—”Yes the LCD makes accurate metering and focus assessment problematic in bright conditions but wow! Like me, you’ll marvel at the captured detail and image quality when you get to see it up close. I’d recommend buying the optional viewfinder though, but this additional cost item brings me to one final consideration. ”
Steve’s Digicams—”The Ricoh GR Digital III camera kit has an MSRP of US$699, and ships with: GR Digital III camera body, AV cable, USB cable, Hand strap, Rechargeable battery (DB-65), Battery charger (BJ-6), Hot shoe cap, Software CD-ROM, and Instruction manuals.”
TrustedReviews—”The Ricoh GR Digital III remains a unique camera. It offers a range of user control normally associated with fairly advanced DSLRs in a well-designed, slim and pocket-friendly camera that is a genuine pleasure to use. Image quality is comparable with the very best that compact cameras can offer, with build quality and finish to match. The only downside is the price, and the fact that its competitors offer more features for less money. ”

CNET.uk—“For the average user, the Ricoh GR Digital III is so overpriced and under-specified that it’s just not worth considering. But, for pros and enthusiasts who want a ‘proper’ camera that they can fit in a pocket, and who value quality and simplicity above all, it’s just brilliant.”
ePhotozine—”In terms of noise control, this has to be the best Ricoh compact ever made which quells my thoughts on the third camera to be the worst! It’s very similar to the previous model in terms of build and layout but there are plenty of new additions to keep newcomers and upgraders happy.”
PhotographyBlog—”Ricoh have taken an already superbly thought-out camera in the GR Digital II and produced a new model that far surpasses its predecessor. The GR Digital III bucks the recent trend of offering just a few unimportant features in a so-called upgrade, with a brand new lens, sensor, image processing engine and LCD screen, plus a number of other innovative features. They all add up to make this the best Ricoh compact camera yet.”
RegHardware—”The Ricoh GR Digital III is a great camera for the person who puts performance and control over fancy features. It offers superb handling, fantastic customisation and really lets your creative juices flow. The one drawback is the price, especially when you consider that the suggested retail price of the GR Digital III is £70 more than for the Canon EOS 1000D DSLR. Then again, you can’t stuff the latter in your pocket. If you want a compact that offers top-notch performance and can find the GR Digital III for a discounted price, then you’ll have bagged yourself a winner.”

CNET UK—“The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR is a well-designed, compact superzoom, and the EXR sensor technology is spectacularly successful, even though the resolution penalty is disappointing. But it’s all spoiled by some truly horrible purple-blue fringing. It doesn’t appear in every shot, but it’s frequent enough to drive you mad in the end.”

DigicamReview—“Image quality is very good, with low noise, when compared to other digital cameras and the option to capture a wide dynamic range is a very welcome feature, however purple fringing seems to be an unwanted side effect of having so much zoom available.”

ePhotozine—“It’s a mixed bag of performance from the FinePix F70 EXR giving lots of detail and lovely colours but then it’s let down with mid to high ISO levels. If you’re after a thin camera with plenty of pull in the zoom area, that also looks good then this is the camera for you. In terms of innovative fetaures, it appears to have more to offer than others in the same price bracket.”

Pocket-lint—“The F70EXR suggests itself as an ideal travel companion best suited to spur of the moment snaps. That said the broad focal range and EXR and film simulation modes do provide a wealth of creative possibilities, ably allowing the photographer to take in everything from landscapes to candid close ups. With the F70EXR suggesting excellent value the ultimate winner here is the consumer.”

PhotoReview—“Buy this camera if: You’re looking for a pocketable long-zoom digicam that is good value for money. You take a lot of photographs in bright conditions (beach and/or snow) and need the ability to record highlight details in subjects. You’d prefer a camera with useful automated functions.”

DPExpert—”We tested the camera in the mode that most users will choose (if they bother to choose any), Auto EXR. We wandered around town as a tourist, taking tourist type snaps. The 27mm wide angle is a boon and the pictures of all subjects were consistently good. At $500 this is the compact camera that sets standards for image quality.”

Cameras.uk—”The EXR Dynamic Range setting not only increases the detail in the more shady and brighter areas of the shot, but by reducing the resolution the Finepix F70EXR delivers some cracking outdoor scenic shots. I am very happy with my test shots. “
