Tethered Capture with Live View support has been added to Lightroom Classic for the Nikon D750 and the Nikon D610. Adobe has also fixed some crashes that would occur when using Tethered Capture.

• Now when you right-click on a collection set and choose Duplicate Collection Set, the contents of the collection set (collections, nested collection sets) will be duplicated along with the collection set.

How to Update the Lightroom Desktop App

If you previously were prompted to agree to auto-update Lightroom and if you agreed, then when you open Lightroom for the first time after the update is available, go to Help>System Info to verify that you are now using version 4.3. Otherwise to update to 4.3, go to Help>Updates, and in the Creative Cloud app, on the Updates tab click on Update next to Lightroom (cloud-based photo service; not Lightroom Classic or Lightroom CC 2015.)

Operating System Requirements for 4.x

• Windows 10 versions 1903 and later
• MacOS Mojave, Catalina (and Big Sur when it comes out later this year).

If your operating system is not up-to-date enough, you will not see the option to update Lightroom in your Creative Cloud app.

Throughout the Lightroom ecosystem (Desktop, Mobile and Web) invite others to not only view, flag and comment on your images, but now also edit your images! (This is not available to Lightroom Mobile users who do not have a subscription.)

Right-click on the album or image you wish to share, choose Share & Invite, enter an email address, click on the Edit icon, and invite.

Once the user receives the email, goes to the album/image and logs in with an Adobe account, they can edit.

Other users' edits will show in your Lightroom as auto-created versions:

Shared albums now have symbols for easy identification – those you share with others have a globe symbol, and those that are shared by you have symbols indicating what level of privileges you have (+ to add images, Edit icon to edit):

The new Super Resolution feature available in Lightroom Desktop uses artificial intelligence to increase the size of your image to four times its original size in pixels. (It doubles the length and the width.) This can be useful for making large prints or for upsizing a small crop of an image. Super Resolution will work on any file type (raw, JPEG, TIFF, etc.).

Raw Details (previously known as Enhance Details) and Super Resolution are now in one Enhance dialog. Right-click (or Ctl-click with a one-button Mac mouse) in your image and choose Enhance… 

Raw Details must be run with Super Resolution if your image is a camera-proprietary raw file (not a DNG, JPEG, TIFF, etc.).

Lightroom can't handle photos over 65,000 pixels or 512 MP, so Super Resolution won't work on files large enough that the 4x increase would put them over the limit.

The original file and the new DNG file will be automatically stacked.

The quality of enlargement compared to upsizing during export and print, but be careful – Super Resolution can introduce color artifacts and noise. Evaluate your image closely after running the process.

Now in Lightroom Desktop, crop to any proportions with the new custom aspect ratio feature:

Lightroom will store 5 custom ratios, then when you add a new one it will delete the oldest one.

In Lightroom Desktop and Web, the Presets button has been moved to the top of the Edit stack, since presets are often applied early in one's workflow:

Throughout the Lightroom ecosystem (Desktop, Mobile, Web) as well as in Lightroom Classic, Adobe has added seven new sets of presets – three for portraits, organized by skin tone, and four style (cinematic, futuristic, vintage, travel). Adobe hired professional photographers and preset creators to develop these presets for us. These presets are only available to those with a subscription – hence the "premium" label. Those just using the free version of Lightroom Mobile will see new Portrait presets for various skin tones, but these are not the same as the premium ones.

I haven't used the presets much yet, but I have heard great feedback from others!

Lightroom Classic is now an M1-native application – running it in Rosetta emulation mode is no longer necessary except when you are using tethered capture. If/when you launch tethered capture, you will be prompted to relaunch the app in Rosetta mode.

There are seven new premium preset sets available in Lightroom Classic and the entire Lightroom ecosystem. Adobe hired photo editing and preset-creation experts to create them, and they are very good. The first three, Portraits, are categorized by skin type – Deep, Medium, and Light. The other four, Style, include Cinematic, Futuristic, Vintage, and Travel preset sets.

In Grid view, the default smooth scrolling can often cut off a portion of the top and/or bottom row of images. Now with the Scroll by Row option provides an alternative that doesn't. To enable, in Grid view go to View>Scroll by Row. Do the same again to return to the default behavior

Performance has been improved in the following areas:

• When editing metadata of multiple images at once, time to update the data in the Metadata panel
• Tone Curve on Mac when using custom color profiles

In response to Develop slowness reported with 10.2, work has also been done to optimize the utilization of VRAM. Expect more improvement with higher VRAM. VRAM of 4 GB and lower will likely not see an improvement in performance. (VRAM is memory on your graphics/video card used to store image data for display.)

Tethered capture involves shooting with your camera plugged into your computer, with Lightroom automatically and instantly importing the images. Watch my video tutorial on shooting tethered with Lightroom for more details.

With LRC 10.2 in February, a beta version of Nikon Live View was released. With 10.3, the official version has been released, for a subset of Nikon cameras. The list of live-tether-supported cameras at the bottom of this tethered capture support page will be kept up-to-date as new cameras are added .

Live view for tethering using Canon cameras has been available since Lightroom Classic 10.0. With 10.2 Adobe is releasing a beta version of Live view for Nikon cameras. This beta is available for all Nikon cameras for which tethering is supported except it is not available for Z-series cameras.

Photoshop Elements 2021 Support

Photoshop Elements 2021 catalogs can now be imported into Lightroom Classic. (For how, watch my video on importing Elements catalogs, in my Lightroom Fundamentals & Beyond video series.)

Zoom

The Scrubby Zoom tool can now be used while using the local adjustment tools (brush, radial filter, graduated filter) and while using the tone curve and HSL targeted adjustment tools. Activate the Scrubby Zoom tool with Shift+Cmd on Mac and Shift+Ctl on PC, then drag a rectangular area to zoom into.

• The cloud-based Lightroom is now natively compatible with Mac M1 processors and Windows ARM processors.
• We can now rearrange images in an album manually by dragging.

iOS iPad and iPhone

• New home screen widgets available:
  • Camera launcher (back or front/selfie)
  • Featured Discover posts
  • Featured Learn tutorials
• Better support for iPhone 12’s
• Improvements to the camera module

LOTS of bugs have been fixed or otherwise resolved, including the following customer-reported ones for Lightroom Classic and the cloud-based Lightroom. (I’m sure that Lightroom Mobile bugs have also been fixed, but I don’t have the list.)

With this Lightroom Classic 10.0 release Adobe has dropped support for Windows 7 and for Mac OS High Sierra (10.13).

You will only be able to install LrC 10.0 with one of the following operating systems:

• Windows 10 version 1903 and later
• Windows Server 2016 and later (Windows 10 version 1809 is not blocked, to support Windows Server 2019)
• Mac OS Mojave (10.14) and Catalina (10.15)

Adobe is also preparing to support Mac OS Big Sur when it is released later this year, and to provide a native version of Lightroom Classic for Apple Silicon.

Problems reported (that others have confirmed):

• Major performance issues on some Macs (not all) – scrolling and other UI (editing seems to be fine).
• When using Copy/Paste or Sync, if have chosen a white balance preset, doesn’t copy correctly (confirmed bug)
• Unexpected error opening catalog – check the link to look for a cause and workaround, but as I’m writing this there isn’t one  – revert to 9.4.
• When trying to add files to a collection using a custom sort order, I get this error: ?:0: attempt to compare two nil values.  Workaround: set collection order to something other than custom
• Emailing out of Lightroom doesn’t work; produces a ?:0 Attempt to index field ‘font’ ( a nil value ) error – problem acknowledged by Adobe
• Zooming to 200% in Library – blurry
• Lightroom Classic: Collections panel shows one collection after restarting LR with panel collapsed “A workaround is to change the panel from Sort By Name to Sort By Kind, or vice versa, and then collapse and expand the panel. Another workaround is to expand the panel and then restart LR.”
• Lightroom 10.0 changes exposure when zooming in to 100% (solution: purge previews cache in Preferences>Performance)

As a replacement for the Split Toning panel, the Color Grading panel allows one to apply a color tint to shadows, highlights, and/or midtones, as well as globally to the entire image, using industry standard three-way color controls (i.e. with hue, saturation and luminance  controls).

Replicating Split Toning

To completely replicate the old split toning capability, use the Shadows and Highlights tints, Balance slider, and set Blending to 100.

Still Seeing the Split Toning Panel?

If you have updated to Lightroom Classic 10 and for an image you see the Split Toning panel rather than the Color Grading panel, your image is still in an old process version – it must use 3 or later to leverage color grading. To update your image, click on the lightning bolt below the histogram.

There are three new presets in the Creative section of the Presets panel that use color grading: Cool Matte, Cool Shadows and Warm Highlights, and Warm and Moody. Other presets that used to use split toning have been translated to color grading (with Blending=100).

Two new zooming tools – box zoom and scrubby zoom – have been added, and other changes to the Navigator panel have been made.

Box Zoom:  hold down Command on Mac, Ctrl on PC to get the Box Zoom tool, click and drag to define the area you wish to zoom in to.

Scrubby Zoom: in Develop Loupe (D) view only at this point, hold down Shift to get the Scrubby Zoom tool, drag on the image (where you want to zoom) to the left to zoom out, right to zoom in.

Navigator panel changes:

• Zoom ratios are now shown as percentages (for example, 1:2 = 50%, 1:1 = 100%, 2:1 = 200%)
• Fill view is now hidden in a dropdown with Fit.

Lightroom Classic now supports tethering for Nikon D6 and D780.
