Finally, we are here. This is the part where you start to see the reward for your hard work. If you’ve shown up, discovered your little corner of social media, and begun joining and leading the discussions, then you are well on the way to building your online community.

This is also the part where I see some people start to stumble and get lost in the numbers. I want to be clear: This is not the time to focus on the numbers and algorithms.

And again just for emphasis:

This is not the time to focus on the numbers and algorithms.

I find that the minute you start to worry about numbers and data – you lose your connection to the people in your community. And when that connection gets lost, then you start to lose a bit of authenticity. So what should you be doing at this stage?

Build

Continue to look for like-minded people and connect with them. Finding an audience isn’t something that is done once at the beginning and then stopped. As people naturally fall away, new people will come in and you want to be there – ready to welcome them.

Inspire

Continue to tell your story or share a journey and also make sure to encourage your community/followers/audience to join in on the conversation. Invite them to share their ideas, and experiences and join in on the fun.

Appreciate

Appreciate those in your community by letting them know. Give them a like, follow, comment. Cheer with them on their wins. (Virtually) Sit with them on their challenges. Most of what you are doing should be focused on the people in your community and making them feel heard.

And play…

Wherever you are in trying to build up your profile, if you are here trying to work out what to do next – I permit you to play. Experiment. Test. Whatever you want to call it. For the next couple of months, don’t worry about whether or not your posts are getting the most reach, high numbers of likes and comments, etc. Just put yourself out there and play. Your focus is to consistently post and engage with your growing community. Listen to their conversations and add to them with your spin. See if posting in the mornings or evenings works better for you. Post at different times of the day with different types of content. You can keep it loosely themed but don’t lock yourself into a niche too soon because you might find it isn’t the right thing for your profile.

Then, after three months, you look at the data. And while it is good to notice which posts had more reach than others, it is just as important to look at the ones that had a high engagement % rate. And start asking questions – what was it about the high reach/likes one that made it go viral? Did it end up outside your “normal” network? What was it about the high-engagement one that resonated with your community?

From there, you might find inspiration to give more to your community of what they are looking for.

People want to talk to people

Finally, we are at creating content, this is where you can show off your more creative and storytelling side. Luckily, there are many different formats you can use to do it. If you have a flair for video, then short reels or TikTok videos might be your thing. If you can also draw, then conveying a story through imagery could be appealing. Comfortable speaking but not being behind the camera? Look into a podcast! And of course, writing. If at the end of the day, you just enjoy the simplicity of getting the words out and written, then investigate setting up a blog or your newsletter. The point is, that you have options. Even if you find that you gravitate towards one or two, it is worth spending a little bit of time understanding the basics of the others. This is also good practice when it comes to making content accessible – but more on that later.

Creating content – the types

5.61 billion people in this world have a mobile phone. Most companies today are very mobile-oriented because typically 96.5% of users are going to be accessing information through their mobile phones.

TikTok’s video editing capabilities are quite powerful and worth just playing around with. Apple is a company that has embraced that and turned it into an entire campaign selling on the idea that anyone can create a story with their Shot on iPhone campaign. The point is, that designing for mobile is a safe bet when it comes to creating your content.

Images

Some platforms, such as Instagram, are built with sharing images in mind. If you want to focus on this platform, it can be worth reading up on what works and maybe following some brands or influencers for inspiration. Whichever platform you are posting to, if you use an image, be aware of the different sizes for each platform. You don’t want half of your text cut off in someone’s feed. Ideally, everything that people would need to see would be visible. Luckily, you can use Canva to help you out. All you must do is select “create a design” and then type in the platform you’ll want to post your image on. They’ll create a blank design based on the best size for that platform.

Video

I mentioned before that for social media, TikTok video editing is thorough. However, I do understand not wanting to rely on TikTok if you want to post videos elsewhere. I’ve used Adobe Premiere before and it is a powerful piece of software. But it is not the only one out there. If you have a MacBook, iMovie can get you started. If you already have a Microsoft 365 subscription, the new program Clipchamp might be worth looking into. I have not yet used it so I can’t say if it is good.

66% of consumers say short-form video is the most engaging content in their feed so it is worth giving consideration – even if the idea of sitting in front of a camera makes you nervous. Luckily, most people appreciate a good mix of content. So, if you are more comfortable doing static posts with the occasional video – do that. Remember that it is important to remain authentic to yourself first. And if you do decide to do a video – it doesn’t have to be complicated. Sir Patrick Stewart went viral while reading a sonnet a day. If nothing else – then sit in a cosy chair and read a piece from your book or work in progress. And if you don’t like the sound of your voice – maybe enlist the help of a friend.

Audio

I admit that audio and podcasts are not my thing. There are plenty of options when it comes to sharing podcasts. When I’ve had to edit audio content, I just use a VLC media player.

Text & Copy

Writing for the web is very different than writing elsewhere. Most people won’t read the entirety of a post or an article. (If you are one of the few reading this – hello! ) When I am sharing these pieces on social media – I am taking out the main points and heavily summarising them because I know most people will just be skimming through.

We have this concept of “front-loading” copy on any post – meaning you put the most important bits first and expand on it later. You also want to make sure your writing is clear and easy to understand. And of course – be aware of best practices for each platform.

Accessibility

Making sure that your content is accessible means that you are committing yourself to being inclusive. The more inclusive you are, the more people get a chance to enjoy what you have to offer. And as a writer or aspiring author – you’d be offering a lot! Inclusive design is a field that I wish more companies took seriously but that is another topic. For now, what matters is doing what you can to make sure your communications and social media profiles are accessible.

inclusive-communications-guidanceDownload

Some things to keep in mind:

Keep the copy simple. The average reading age on the internet is much lower than you’d expect. Also, many people may not natively speak your language. If your prose is too complicated, you’ve lost their attention.

Keep the copy clear. Avoid using metaphors, idioms, figures of speech etc.

If you are writing a long post, break up the content into sections and lists into bullet points.

Use descriptive link text when adding links.

If you are using images, add alt-text or a description to add context for screen readers.

If you are putting text on images keep it short, keep it clear, keep it simple and make sure the letters do not get lost in the background.

If you are using audio, add captioning or a video description. (The number of times I’ve missed out on a video because there is no captioning and I’m stuck under a sleeping baby… )

There is a lot more you can go into when it comes to accessibility but just keeping these in mind will make a world of difference for so many people. You don’t want to miss out on making those connections.

Finally, have fun! This is your chance to tell your story. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Use a mixture of long-form and short content. Evergreen and topical. If a post fails – look at what you can tweak and try again. If a post wins – look at what worked and try that again too.

One thing I’ve heard a lot in the industry is “Content is King.” However, you can have the best piece of content but it will be worthless if no one sees it or it doesn’t resonate with your target audience. Content is about more than what you post. I personally don’t even like using the word “content” to describe this part of social media planning. I had a mentor who once told me to consider how each piece of “content” either opens or engages in a “conversation.”

If you are someone who is an aspiring author and decidedly not a social media professional, this outlook will help you so much. Instead of trying to be a “brand” – be yourself and consider how you want to open the conversation with your audience. Alongside the more traditional posts, reels and content you broadcast from your profile, each comment, repost, share, quote also builds upon that conversation and strengthens your community. By becoming a part of the community, people will be more ready to listen & add on to and conversations you may begin.

Be authentic

It is no secret that AI been impacting communications and more. With that being the case people are valuing authenticity more than ever before. People want to be able to trust you – especially in a time where it is so easy to spread misinformation. This is especially the case when is comes to communicating to younger generations and those who grew up in the digital age. Because people are so inundated with being marketed to – you have to get a little creative on how to connect with your audience. A huge part of that begins by being authentic and transparent.

For an industry example – you only need to read about the recent Hugo Awards controversy in China to know why authenticity and trust is so important. Another recent example is the “review bombing” done by an aspiring writer which led to their publishing contract being cancelled. When it comes to your content – be mindful of the conversation you start.

Consistency is key

People and social media algorithms love consistency. So whatever content you plan of creating or sharing – be consistent about the approach. Someone who posts at least once a week and spends time engaging with other accounts will have much more success that someone who only comes in and posts 10+ things in a week to just drop off until months or weeks later. Be there and be consistent and you will start to use the social media algorithm to your advantage.

Put your content in the right place

When it comes to social media platforms, each one tends to have a different vibe to go with it. To be somewhat successful it is a good idea to spend time on each platform to study what gets shared and resonates with other users. You wouldn’t really want to share how your latest D&D campaign went on LinkedIn for example. Taking time to understand what each network has to offer can set you up for success. You may also find that the goals of a network don’t align with your goals and decide to drop that from your content plan.

Keep track of the “big stuff”

You’ve finally got to the point where you are actually ready to publish a book and you want it to be a success. Now what?

If you have been following others in the industry and keeping up with their wins and struggles then you are off to a good start. You can observe what they do to promote themselves and take some inspiration for your own accounts. I will caveat this by mentioning that what works for one person does not necessarily mean it will work for you. Looking back and understanding what resonated with your audience is a big part of planning content. You should be looking back just as much as planning ahead to see what worked in the past, what did quite land and what you can improve upon next time it comes up.

For the “big stuff” I like to start from a blank social plan similar to the one linked on the right. It helps me keeps track of the important details and create space for someone to review it so I am less likely to forget or overlook anything.

Blank Social Plan

If you have a larger campaign or a lot of content in the pipeline it might be worth it to look into a social media calendar to keep track of it all. These vary from person to person, from using Google calendar, Trello, a spreadsheet, to a content management platform. If you do go this route, I recommend creating space to track data & performance metrics. At the very least, tracking unique interactions and the engagement rate is worth it. You want to post content that is engaging because that is more likely to go further on any platform.

Honestly, there is so much more that can be said about planning content but I will stop here. Next up is all about creating content and keeping accessibility in mind.

The other parts in this series are linked below:

There have been quite a few discussions on threads about people, especially newer or upcoming authors, struggling to build and find an audience on social media and marketing. I asked around to see if people would want some very general advice on where to get started and there was indeed some interest. This is the first of four planned posts on using social media for community and promotion. Unfortunately, there is no “one trick” which works every time on social media. You do have to find what works for you. This guide will hopefully provide you with some things to consider while figuring it out.

Understand your target demographic

Before even thinking about social media, you need to do some legwork on understanding your target market. If you are a writer or an author, chances are you already write within a specific genre (or two!). This is great because you will already have something to define your audience by – and find where they are. For example, Romantasy seems to be everywhere right now. Fueled by TikTok and some recent bestsellers, there is plenty of buzz about it. But what does this tell us and how is it relevant to social media?

The main demographic for romance novels tends to be women. Romantasy has been seen as “young adult adjacent,” so it makes sense that it is extraordinarily popular with young women. If you look into BookTok users, you’ll find that young women make-up the main demographic. And out of the 80 million or so monthly active U.S.-based TikTok users – 60% are women and 80% are between the ages 16 and 34. If you are trying to reach that younger audience – then yes, TikTok is worth looking into for a platform.

But what if I am uncomfortable with being in front of a camera and making reels?

I hear you! I am the same way. I am a writer and the idea of being observed or on camera puts me in a state of anxiety. You can still find what works for you and play with content ideas – but that will be the next post.

Find your audience

If you want to get an idea of the digital landscape and how people use it, then I recommend you at least read the Digital 2024 Global Overview Report from We Are Social. They publish it every year and it is a gold mine for understanding how people use digital tools broken down by region, age, platform etc.* If you don’t want to read the 500+ page report, you can get a snapshot of the top headlines in the video below.

After researching the latest social media demographics, you’ve decided on the platforms you want to focus on. What is next?

Grow your community

Follow, follow, follow!

You’ve created your profile, chosen a good photo, and posted your first intro post. It’s time to look for who else in the industry is on the platform – and follow them. Generally, I like to do a nice mix of the big, medium, and niche accounts. I then go through who they are following and follow anyone who is relevant to my profile and seems interesting. I’ve found that this is a good first practice because the algorithm then will place your account in a similar category to who you follow. It is just a way of nudging things in the right direction before even thinking about your content. On some platforms (such as Instagram), you can also follow hashtags or topics. If I notice a certain hashtag coming up again and again – I go and follow it so the new content shows up in my feed.

Which leads me to the next step…

DS9 – Captain Sisko saying, Engage!

Engagement is key when it comes to social media. It tells the algorithm what content you are interested in seeing, builds relationships with other users, helps bump up content to other people’s feeds and more. If you are just posting content but not going out and engaging with other people’s content then it will be extremely difficult for your account to get any traction. “Follow trains” and “like for likes” may get a quick boost but after those are done, the actual engagement tends to die down again.

When it comes to engagement, it should be quality over quantity. Go celebrate people’s joys, and mourn with their loss. Encourage people to try again. Laugh with their jokes. Compliment their cats. Be genuine and people will come.

There will be four parts in this series:

I ended up getting Kindle Unlimited and Daughter of No Worlds was one of the first books that it recommended.

It wasn’t like I had a long list of other books to read anyway. (I do)

So I figured why not and decided to check it out.

It begins with Tisaanah being sold into slavery as a child and follows her path as she escapes and is determined to claim power for herself. And any challenge or barrier she meets- she overcomes with sheer brute force. With everything at stake she can’t afford to fail.

Men want power because it makes them feel good. Women want power because it lets us do things.

Daughter of No Worlds

It is a fun read and I enjoyed seeing the relationship between Tisaanah and Max grow. They helped each other heal and also became stronger for it. However, I admit that I was a bit frustrated that almost everything seemed to work out for Tisaanah. It was a theme that her one weakness was dancing and she had to count steps and memorize them. But even that she over came with “brute force” to the point that I didn’t think it was a weakness anymore?

The other thing I missed out on was the worldbuilding – somehow it was a bit fuzzy as if the author wasn’t quite sure of the set up either. But, that can be explained away by Tisaanah generally not knowing politics as she was sheltered as a slave.

But if you focused more on the fact that this is a story of trauma and healing and how trauma sears itself into you – then yes it was definitely worth reading. There were many small moments (between the larger ones) scattered through out that showed just how deep trauma can go.

I honestly don’t know if I’ll continue the series because by the end the book – Tisaanah and Max’s story felt finished? This might be the lack of worldbuilding/higher stakes coming through but I do wonder where it could possibly go. I guess it just depends on if the cliffhanger dropped in at the end is enough to make me continue.

Just doing a short review today because my mind has been not at its best. But onto the book!

If you are looking for a relaxing read in an Arthurian setting then Of Crowns and Legends by Chelsea Banning could be worth picking up. Set years after King Arthur’s death this series focuses on his children, twins Anwil and Ariadne, as they come of age. They’ve never known their father and yet his legacy follows them everywhere.

I appreciate the fact that this series picks up the story again some time after Arthur’s death and navigate the political fallout from that time. But that doesn’t mean the main characters are missing! You still have Merlin, the Lady of the Lake, Sir Gawain and more actively making appearances in the story.

I admit I did struggle at points with the writing because it felt slow and you could tell the author was taking the time to set the scene. But there was a lot of worldbuilding to cover as we are expanding on the Arthurian universe – instead of doing another retelling. In the end, if you are a fan of anything related to King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, its still worth the quick read.

How far will you go to save someone you love? And if you save them, will they forgive you?

How far will you go to save someone you love? And if you save them, will they forgive you?

That’s the question swirling in my head after speed-reading Fourth Wing and Iron Flame this past week. I admit I was influenced by seeing everyone talk about it on Threads and decided to check it out. And I am glad I did.

The premise of Fourth Wing isn’t an uncommon one in fantasy fiction. We’ve come across many versions of the coming-of-age story happening in an academic setting to learn about magic and fighting combat. Sometimes the story is more focused on magic, such as the shining example by She Who Will Not Be Named. Other times, it is more war-oriented, as in the Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. Fourth Wing starts out war-oriented and carries that theme throughout, even when the dragons are bonded and magic does come into play.

“But I will not run. I wouldn’t be standing here if I’d quit every time something seemed impossible to overcome. I will not die today.”

Fourth Wing

What sets it apart is that the main character, Violet, has extra physical struggles to overcome and proves again and again that she won’t let them hold her back. Also, her struggles can’t be fixed away by magic. They are her, and she is more than them. And you know what? I appreciate seeing it in a story. I have my own physical health conditions that have made my life more difficult than it would be for most. But that doesn’t mean I just accept it. I adapt and work with it, as does Violet.

Unfortunately the ending to Fourth Wing let me down a tiny bit. Somehow, it felt like Fourth Wing ended too abruptly to leave it at a cliffhanger. I can see the reasoning, but in my opinion, it ended up hurting the beginning of Iron Flame. Now, time had to be spent in Iron Flame wrapping up the events of Fourth Wing before the story could truly start. This resulted in the pace shifting and being slower to get through for the first part of Iron Wing.

There are some other issues with the first part of the second book, but eventually, things shift, and the story continues.

“An emotional inconvenience? Is that what I am to you?” – Violet

“You’re currently a prized annoyance.” – Tairn

Iron Flame

I will say, though, that the dragons and their sass (when their humans are doing dumb shit) absolutely make the story even better.

But back to the question I have swirling in my head.

How far will you go to save someone you love? And if you save them, will they forgive you?

I admit I did not see the ending of Iron Flame coming, and it definitely sent my head spinning and thinking about the ramifications. Throughout, we see Violet and Xaden work to build something that will last. It is clear they will do anything to save each other. They need each other. They love each other. But can they go too far and end up losing each other?

How long do you think it takes for someone to fall out of love? A day? A month? I’m asking because I don’t have any experience with it.

Iron Flame

Or will they work through it?

I guess I will now join many others in eagerly anticipating book 3 of The Empyrean.

What a month June was! It started off with us being inundated with strawberries. We have made some jam, froze some, made loads of smoothies – and of course ate them fresh

And we finally grew some greens! The cold wet spring meant that the slugs went after most of what we sowed. I didn’t have any lettuce survive but we had 3 spinach plants and a good amount of mustard make it.

At the end of May our mustard and spinach was still quite small.

Unfortunately because we then went to the opposite extreme when it came to weather – the mustard bolted. It does not like dry weather at all. But all was not lost. We ended up pulling it and then making Saag. It was our first meal that was 70% cooked with what we grew and it tasted wonderful.

By the end of June we harvested our garlic and I am busy drying them and braiding it to hang. That will probably be a separate post because I did not realize the work involved there! In it’s place we planted a pumpkin vine and a black squash vine so it has room to spread. If all goes well, we’ll have pumpkins for Halloween!
