Stupid move: NO firewire on Macbooks anymore

You might have read this allready, but i think removing firewire from macbooks is one of the most stupid moves i have ever seen.

New Fairchild 670 - analoguetube

The new company Analoguetube.com just started building the classic Fairchild 670 again. It's called AT-101. The AT-101 is available for £11,500 ex VAT. There is a 6 week lead time. So hurry up ... ;-)

Here is what they say:

The AT-101 is the result of 4 years development based around the Fairchild 670 Stereo Limiter/Compressor it is a blend of modern technology and traditional construction, the original was developed during the late 50’s and has gained a somewhat mythical status, in both recording studios and value. Favored by many recording engineers for its natural uncoloured sound, original units typicaly command high prices.

The AT-101 shares exactly the same circuit and components used in this technology. The aim is to breathe life back into a product that has for many years been unavailable. The goal is to make this unique brand of audio compression equipment commercially available to everybody.

Many attempts have been made to recreate it, mostly by [now] established American manufactures using parts of the circuit and different tubes in a smaller box. The AT-101 brings together 50 years of established technology using state of the art low noise components and returns classical methods of audio compression back to the studio.

Analoguetube.com builds and manufactures the AT-101 using traditional electronic methods with parts that are sourced commercially and that are commonly available. These units have been built by hand as close to the original as possible using standard high quality components and are warranted to be free from manufacturing defects for the life of the equipment from the original date of manufacture.

Each unit is shipped with a fully protective foamed-out Peli road case with wheels as standard.

This could be bizarre: The latest issue of "Future Music 201" features an interview with Aquasky (www.aquasky.co.uk). This screenshot shows that Aquasky uses warezed software:

The process by which Mission of Burma's landmark recordings from the early 1980's were re-mastered. The process is old-fashioned. The gear is original. The vinyl is live cut.

Once in a while a product comes along that really takes things to another dimension - take the Celemony Melodyne - that put audio into the world of grid editing, enabling incredibly powerful manipulation of recorded audio.

Well be prepared to have you mind blown once again. Today Melodyne previewed the their Direct Note Access. Essentially, they have made the impossible possible. Take a stereo (or mono) track of polyphonic audio - piano, string quartet or whatever and then through some kind of wizardry, explode this into the separate individual notes and edit to taste as you would with monophonic audio within Melodyne. Yes you heard right.

It's kind of hard to explain, watch the video - it's a real doodie. Outside of a keynote speech by Steve Jobs, you rarely hear the crowd cheer as software features are unveiled....

Available later this year as part of the Melodyne 2.0 update (in plug-in form first).

Look at all the nice tubes in that uad box!
Too bad they can't stand up to the sound of the old vintage 1176.
I like the purple audio mc77 best.
And i don't love the sound of the 6176 pre's either.
To my ears bae 1272 or api 312 have more personality.
But that's just me - and the 6176 still looks great!

Peart is known for an extremely hard-hitting style that combines accuracy, precision, clarity, and complexity. His influences are eclectic, ranging from Led Zeppelin's John Bonham, Steve Gadd, The Who's Keith Moon, to fusion and jazz drummers Billy Cobham, Buddy Rich, Bill Bruford and Gene Krupa. Peart is distinguished historically for playing "butt-end out", i.e. reversing stick orientation for greater impact and increased rim-shot capacity (for that reason, his long-time drum technician, Larry Allen, would file the tip-end of his sticks for gripping purposes).
