Jacob Morgan on the Future of Work. Great Summary:

For as long as organization’s have existed there have been a set of unwritten principles that we have all followed. Some of them are that employees came into the office at 9 and worked until 5, managers made all the decisions and those who brought in the most money got promoted, … In short, work was not pleasant. As I’ve repeated many times, some of the dictionary synonyms for “employee” are: slave, cog, servant. Synonyms for “work” include: drudgery and daily grind. And synonyms for “manager” include: slave-driver and zookeeper.

Replacing sharepoint and email is not going to change the fact that our organization’s were built from the ground up with these types of stereotypes firmly in place.

…

No, the future of work is not about replacing sharepoint and email, it’s about re-defining what work means, why we work, and how we work. Pass this along to anyone who thinks otherwise.

via The Future of Work is NOT About Replacing Sharepoint and Email : CloudAve.

Well, I agree in a lot what Jacob writes: “the future of work is not about replacing sharepoint and email”, BUT it helps to replace them with people-centric solutions beside the cultural change. Email and file silos for sure do not help to redefine the future of work.

Most recently I was presenting at the next conference in Berlin talking about Marketing and how it evolves. One example I was using, is the lack of success with email and email newsletter. I personally experience that people get bored with email and the amount of email newsletter arriving each day in their inbox. And I am personally unsubscribing of most of the lists and email newsletters I get. But there is another opinion out. There are marketing gurus believing in email and today I was running into two positive postings on email. On Wired I found an article, why Why E-Mail Newsletters Won’t Die quoting RebelMouse CEO Paul Berry

“As much as we’re told e-mail isn’t sexy, no one sends more e-mail than Facebook or Twitter,” says Berry, the former chief technical officer of the Huffington Post. “And the reason they do is we’re all on e-mail and it brings you back” to the site that sent it.

via Why E-Mail Newsletters Won’t Die | Wired Business | Wired.com.

And Jake Levine, Digg’s general manager adds:

“Twitter and Facebook are both streams, products where you accept that you’ll miss certain things. An inbox is the complete opposite. Your job is to clear it out. If something is important to you, e-mail products are the one reliable way to make sure you’ll see it.”

via Why E-Mail Newsletters Won’t Die | Wired Business | Wired.com.

Jim Dougherty writes on SocialMediaToday:

One of the most important things that you can do to drive repeat sales is to create an email list (…). One of the huge advantages of email is that most businesses achieve about a 20% open rate on email and a .3% opt-out rate. Compare that to social media and email has a huge advantage, not to mention it is much more likely to be the last touch prior to sale. Email closes if you do it right.

via Why Email Subscribers Unsubscribe [INFOGRAPHIC] | Social Media Today.

Well, I have a problem with this statement, because it encourages (again) marketers to SPAM the world with useless, disappointing emails. For gods sake the posting on Wired is closing with a statement I couldn’t agree more:

Of course, there’s a limit to how much media people will allow to be pushed in their face via e-mail. As Lerer acknowledges, the wrong content can make an e-mail newsletter into “a product that is incredibly annoying.”

via Why E-Mail Newsletters Won’t Die | Wired Business | Wired.com.

This is exactly the challenge. To many of the promotion emails and email newsletters we get is SPAM, not more, not less, invaluable, useless, distracting, annoying content wasting the recipients time and filling up their inbox’s. And most of the time we get these emails much to often. Yes, email and email newsletters can be of value, but only if they deliver this value, relevant content and information the recipient appreciates. Think about it and resharpen your email and Digital Marketing Strategy! So please, a newsletter renaissance only when these requirements are fulfilled.

via Wettbewerbsvorteil Know-how Sharing im Kundenservice 2.0 | Prof. Dr. Heike Simmet.

via Wettbewerbsvorteil Know-how Sharing im Kundenservice 2.0 | Prof. Dr. Heike Simmet.

Studies show that consumers look to their peers for product and service recommendations and reviews. WOM content is, therefore, one of the most powerful, scalable and cost effective forms of promoting your business. And unlike more aggressive outbound marketing campaigns that are often filtered out through email spam filters or caller-ID in the case of cold calls, consumers trust and even seek out feedback and referrals from within the community before they make purchases.

It’s easy to tell how effective your customer community is in generating authentic WOM. You simply have to tap into your community’s customer generated content and pull out company, product or service praise generated by brand advocates. This authentic content can then be used as peer-to-peer marketing content throughout your entire website — from your home page, where you can publish general company praise, to your product listing pages, for individual product reviews and recommendations.

A very interesting posting on CMSwire on Sharepoint. Obviously I do agree with a lot of the statements Rich Blank is making and I have selected the ones I like most:

Short term cost savings and big promises haven’t exactly resulted in a measurable expected return or changed business user perception. Organizations are still dealing with hundreds if not thousands of legacy SharePoint silos from SP2003, 2007 or 2010. People are still overloaded by email and have difficulty finding experts and information easily. Yes, here we are in 2013 … and so many of us are still working like it’s the 1990′s!!!

The problem is that SharePoint was never about people and the way they need to work and the way they want to work. At its core, SharePoint is all about content — a “multi-tool of content technologies.” It has always been such an “IT-centric” driven platform that has never been all that easy for end users.

…

Today, organizations are a network of global and mobile consumers, employees, contractors, partners, and suppliers. Now more than ever, collaboration happens on a mass scale. Today’s enterprise is driven by consumer-minded end users who demand a future BYOD social mobile business world in the cloud.

…

Microsoft buying Yammer was an indirect admission of the failure of SharePoint as a collaboration platform and a clear message that SharePoint isn’t the future.

…

Instead of Microsoft inspiring and illuminating us all, we are again left with uncertainty about the future because we all know that social collaboration is much more than just a newsfeed.

…

For some, the O365 cloud bundle and Yammer’s expected integration might seem like the path of least resistance. If history is any indication, decisions based on short term cost savings and big promises often fail to deliver the value we expect and fail to change work as we know it today. When making decisions about social, mobile and the cloud, the last thing you want is “business as usual” just hosted somewhere else.

Last week I had the pleasure to speak at the next Conference in Berlin. My presentation had the title Marketing needs to change to be successful: Put your customer in the center! As a child of the Email Age – and of email newsletters and email SPAM – I tried to explain, that today’s marketing has to change dramatically. People get more and more bored by email. Rigid laws demanding explicit Opt-In from recipients limit the reach Marketers are having. What is the solution? Of course Social Media, Twitter and Facebook, the new social channels we are using like email … As in email we are spamming people with our boring marketing messages instead of understanding the core of Social Media (and Social Business). And this core is dialogue, real communication, not pre-written Tweets and event promos.

Don’t get me wrong. There is still a need for email newsletters, for web sites with Marketing messages, for Direct Mail and Advertising, all the nice elements of the Marketing Mix, the owned and paid part of our Marketing. But the social side of the Marketing house, what is called earned media is over-shining paid and owned media. Customers rely more and more on word-of-mouth. They trust their peers and not the nice, glossy web sites and messages. They even quite often make their buying (pre)decisions based on earned media even before they talk to us. We need to much better integrate our tactics, personalize, what we deliver to our customers, deliver relevant and interesting content and we need to be willing to engage with our customers in 1:1 communication or communication in a small group.

This means that we as Marketers have to change our behavior, need to become more Sellers and Influencers. And it means that Sales has to change, too, and become Brand advocates, listeners and communicators out there in the social space, in relevant communities, on Twitter and wherever their potential buyer is hanging around online.
