Fujifilm has launched 13 new digital cameras to regain its top spot in the digital camera sector. The new additions are all point and shot cameras and include the first 30x optical zoom still camera from Fujifilm. Two of the new models support EXR sensor, a Fujifilm innovation.

The new EXR models include a touch screen (FinePix Z700EXR) and a pocket megazoom (FinePixF80EXR) model. The Z700EXR has a touch screen and is great for online sharing. The F80EXR has a 10x optimical zoom and is only 1” thick.

FinePix HS10 has the most powerful zoom tool: the 30x optical zoom. This is a fixed lens (10 megapixel) camera and has a back lit CMOS sensor for good shots in low lights.

The FinePixJZ300 and JZ500 are pocket cameras with megazooms. They are aimed at the low price segment and cost $200 and $250 respectively. They share similar features except that JZ300 has a 12 megapixel lens and the JZ500 has a lens with 14 megapixel.

FinePix S1800 and FinePix S2550HD are megazoom digital cameras with 18x optical zoom. They share similar features except that S2550HD has a HDMI-out port which S1800 doesn’t have. The S1800 has a motion-tracking auto focus and image rotation during playback.

The others include six new cameras that are very affordable and have different features. Noted among them is the FinePix XP10 which is a rugged camera.

An interesting name given to a distance, a name that labels one of the most important parameters in digital photography.

If we gather all names and terms used in digital photography we could say it’s too much, but it’s nothing that complicated, actually it is as simple as “hello”.

Hyper-focal distance a tiny detail that can make the difference

The distance named this fancy represents a distance setting that allows capturing of the greatest depth of field. In other words, all the objects from half this distance to horizon will not be blurred.

When you need to take landscape photographs, the only technique is to focus on hyper focal distance and the result is everything in the photograph, from some near distance to infinity will be sharp.

No difficulty is encountered while obtaining the sharpest photo because the common lenses can handle focusing at hyper-focal distance very well with the help of manual focusing.

Take a hyper-focused picture

When taking a landscape picture the hyper-focal distance is what we need to have in mind. Some lenses have a scale that measures the depth of field and lucky photographers that are blessed with them won’t need to do any calculations.

Anyways, these types of lenses are a little expensive so it is better if you know how you can determine the correct hyper-focal distance for perfect landscape photography.

You can use hyper focal distance equation which is a function of focal length, f- number and circle of confusion.

Don’t worry, photography will not transform into a Math’s session so to avoid this geeky thing, you can refer to the tables of values provided with the digital camera because it’s very tedious to calculate hyper focal distance each time you went out for photography. That would be more than sufficient to calculate this hyper focal distance.

When you’ll focus on hyper focal distance, initially nearer objects will be seen blurred because the lens aperture is wide open and the depth of field does not remain same while taking the picture.

Most of the people have tendency to focus on nearby objects due to which they lose focus from hyper focal distance and the image gets blurred. So believe in your photography and don’t lose focus on the distance to avoid image getting blurred.

In the middle of the nature or in the heart of a busy city, from the top of a skyscraper or up in the mountains, the landscape photo will look just perfect, now that you know what the hyper-focal distance is.

In many cases, the major mistakes you do when shooting a photo are not that easily corrected in the post processing unless you are truly skilled and very patient, the best thing you can do is pay a maximum attention when you shoot, which means considering the most important factors that affect the quality of an image, and these are light, camera settings and composition.

The challenging situations are numerous whenever you go out shooting, but here are the most common mistakes and some ways to avoid them. If you have messed up the sharpening of an image, the best option is Photoshop or any other software (you will have to settle for lower quality results though).

If motion blur is a problem you often face, try to do some math before you press the shooter. The exposure value needs to be bigger than the focal length times the size on the camera’s sensor.

Whenever you try to shoot in the dark, you will have to use a tripod unless you are interested in abstract photography. Even pressing the shooter can cause a shake that destroys the good quality of any image.

The same thing applies to sunsets and sunrises and all the low light conditions of photographing. Also, keep in mind that DOF, the depth of field, gives a great deal of contrast to an image, so try to use it properly in all the situations where it can be applied.

What the gadget actually is you might be wondering. An innovative system of on camera flash diffusion which brings a considerable improvement to all kinds of professional photography which blew away the competition, tight as it was.

The owner of BBJ Imports (the corporation which hosts Gary Fong’s products) said the award is so valuable because it makes the voice of so many skilled photographers heard. The photography industry is asking for more and more innovations each day, and it is wonderful to know we can successfully contribute to its development, she added.

BBJ Imports Limited was founded on the idea that photographers need much more than talent in order to do their job right. It works on providing inventions that fit the needs of Europe’s professional photographers, both hardware and software, plus educational seminars, and it successfully did so since its launch in 2006 to this day.

As for the Gary Fong, he is an American photographer well known for two of his inventions in the field: the Gary Fong Light-sphere (l and ll) and the Whale-tail Reporter, both ingenious flash diffusers.

When deciding to sell a house, it is important to capture the best parts of the house with quality photos of various rooms.

Even in a small town, there are lots of houses to be sold over the internet.

In order to differentiate from others, there are some tips to take the best house pictures.

First of all, any pictures which are dark are annoying and out of joy.

Since the buyers want to see the natural light and the atmosphere of the house, taking pictures during the day when the sunlight is in the rooms will be a good idea.

For the rooms which have limited sunlight allowed in, the artificial lamps will work to lighten up the area. Also taking the pictures when the light is behind is important to avoid the glare.

Other than the light, no buyers would ever want to see the small unicorn doll on your shelve in a photo.

Excessive crowds in the house won’t enable to see the area clearly. So a bedroom, for instance, should contain only a bed, maybe a couch if the area is big, commodes and a wardrobe.

On the other hand, the room has to be tidy and clean to show the right atmosphere to the buyer.

As well as the interior design and architecture, the buyer may want to see the overall house or the flat from outside. This may be hard to consider when trying to sell a flat on the 4th floor, but a house with a garden can be shown to the buyer.

The last important factor is to get close-ups to the favorite places of the house to affect the buyer. There should be also glance-shots to give the overall view, but if there are any, some special places or corners are worth trying to capture good close look. This can be a multi-functional kitchen table-counter view or a picture to show how the hallway is useful and wide.

The Olympus Stylus Tough–6000 is a reasonably priced digital camera. It works fine outdoors with a 10 megapixel feature. It’s a straight forward point and shoot digital camera. It has a 3.6x optical zoom with dual image stabilization. It is a great outdoors camera as it is shockproof (up to 5’), waterproof (10’ under water), freezeproof (10oC).

It has a Hyper Crystal III LCD along with a backlight. It is a compact piece at 3.8″W x 2.5″H x 0.88″D and weighs only 5.3oz without the battery and the media card.

The shots taken from this camera can be easily developed to sizes as large as 13” x 19”, provided they have been shot at a low ISO setting. The camera is not recommended for continuous shooting due to its slow speed. It is an average performance camera, quite good for its price range. Its durability makes it a good family camera as the kids can easily be trusted with it.

Overall it is a decent camera if you want a reasonably tough camera which gives you decent pictures of average print size. It is a stylish and solid digital camera well suited for those with an adventurous bone or two.

I was told that Nikon DS3 was exclusively created for photo journalists and for shooting sports. I know it was originally launched to be used at the Olympic Games in the winter of 2010 in Vancouver, and for that reason it was released next to the new zoom model of 70-200 f: 2, 8 AFS-VR 2.

Such a record sensibility allows the increase of the speed in shooting sports movement and with 1/100 instead of 1/10, 1/2000 instead 1/200 the odds of getting outstanding images grows exponentially.

The little time I held it in my hands, sometime between Monday morning and Sunday evening, and with the heavy snowing outside I really can’t say I had enough time to evaluate what it can really do.

The menu has hundreds of pages, a real maze, and the PDF manual disarms you with a length of over 400 pages. I can say for sure it is not light to be carried on the back but it fit my ordinary photographer’s bag that D200 found not roomy enough.

I would have liked to take it to a ball game. Since photographing ball games has been my passion for almost 25 years I could have made the best of the experience to put it at work and exploit those well praised rapid motion captures.

But the heavy snowing made that impossible and my tentativeness of getting special pictures of a sunset among mountains of snow was enthusiastic but nothing more.

The huge sensibility of the sensor gives you a feeling of freedom. 6.400 and 12, 8 K ISO are perfectly ok to use and 3.200 has an exceptional accuracy. In dark places this gets you an amazing exposure. Take for example the subway and the impossible light to take a decent picture. It behaved very good and caught the motion as it should be, clean and exact.

And here it is the apparent contradiction, resolution vs. sensibility.

At the first glance the first seems more important. There are moments when the second is preferable. In a very strong light the larger resolution ensures smoother details.

It can reach into the right light and get you the best or it can have an impossible light and not connect with the right amount of exposure. I have experienced both situations and I understood that for any professional camera there are large sensibilities with unacceptable results.

The large digital cameras like the Nikon DS3 have large captors and as a common ground rule a lot more pixels and a much higher resolution. But they are cameras specialized for newspaper work where the resolution is not that important but the speed and sensibility are an absolute must.

This professional camera will help you take that photo that will be used for print even if the quality is not the highest a photography artist would require. Not all the pictures can be taken at 2 feet; some are ok even at 70 cm. And that is what defines Nikon DS3.

As classic photography can be taken on many types of film, digital photography cannot only be stored on a wide range of devices but can also be formatted (compressed or not) in different ways.

Compression is basically categorized into 2 parts: lossless (which preserve the information of image) and lossy (it may discard certain image data).

Jpeg compression

One of the most used compression methods for digital pictures in digital cameras and internet web pages is JPEG (acronym for Joint Photographic Experts Group). This is actually a standard how the picture will be compressed into a stream of bytes and how that stream will be uncompressed back into image.

JPEG compression is a lossy compression meaning you achieve small size of picture on the cost of its quality. It keeps the most important details of pictures while discarding the less significant ones.

The file size obtained by JPEG compression is much smaller as compared to those obtained by Tiff compression but JPEG compression is highly dependent on image content. Images with less details and noise levels will be compressed well as compared to those with high noise levels.

Tiff compression

Acronym for Tagged Image File Format, TIFF is a more complex file format that allows storage of picture data using lossless compression and is mostly used in printing and publishing industry. This translates in the fact that the picture’s quality will not be altered by editing and re-saving it.

It uses 8 bit or 16 bit per color instead of 24 or 48 bits per color providing high quality lossless compression. Many cameras come up with the option of storing in TIFF format but the image requires excess storage as compared to its JPEG counterpart.

A possible choice that could be considered balanced

Comparing pictures taken in TIFF format with those taken in JPEG format shows only small differences of actual quality of the picture and an average photographer will more often choose to save the photos in JPEG format because this way the pictures will take less storage space.

However, for an experienced photographer, there is another format to take in equation and this is RAW format which is the best alternative as the images in RAW format are smaller in size and can retain more information about your image.

For the sake of saving storage space and take hundreds or even thousands of photos with a minimum of compromise in picture’s quality, JPEG format seems to be the ideal choice.

With 23 years of history behind, the EF lens from Canon are in a tight competition with the older (51 years old already) F type of lens from Nikon, who also launched its 50 millionth last September.

But what is it worth exactly? Canon insists the new EF symbolizes a milestone in the history of the brand. Since the first EOS, produced in 1987, Canon has reached a record of 10 million lenses manufactured in only two years time, being the first to implement an image stabilizer in a digital camera.

They were the pioneers of implementing multiple layered diffractive optic systems especially designed for the action captures, in 2001. In 2008, Canon was also the first to produce the SWC (which stands for sub wave length structure coating) with a focal of 1.4 for the enthusiasts of landscape photography.

The newest telephoto achievement Canon brags with is dated 2010; its specifications are 70-200mm EF, focal distance of 2.8 II USM and it can be used for any kind of photography. All these achievements sustain the most bought brand of photo cameras and promise many surprises for the future.
