Infinix Hot 9 series set for India launch - here's what we know

Infinix Mobile is not new to the budget smartphones. The Hong Kong-based company has introduced several devices in this segment and is now ready to bring the Infinix Hot 9 series to India in the immediate future. The company had launched its predecessor, the Infinix Hot 8 in September last year.

Transsion Holdings, the company that owns the brand, revealed this information through its social media channels and also shared a teaser video to showcase the upcoming smartphone. The Infinix Hot 8 is available in Indian markets for Rs.6999 (You can buy it here).

The teaser video available on Twitter provides us with a glimpse of the Infinix Hot 9 that hit the stands in Indonesia two months ago. The key specifications of the phone will be available on Flipkart, which is already selling back covers for the model. The teaser video doesn't provide details of the device but refers to it as the Infinix Hot 9 series, suggesting that there could be more than one model.

While the Infinix Hot 9 series has already arrived in select markets like Indonesia, the company appears to be getting an upgraded model called the Infinix Hot 9 Pro to the Indian shores. There is no mention of the pricing on the video but the device is selling for roughly Rs.8,500 for the 4GB + 128 GB variant. The colour options seen include Cyan, Violet, Light Blue and Matte Black.

Infinix is no stranger to the budget phones segment having come out with the Infinix S5 Pro earlier this year, making it the cheapest smartphone available in the world that boasts of a pop-up selfie camera. The phone was priced at Rs.9999 and is obviously aimed at first time smartphone users.

There is little that is available by way of product specifications for the India specific product. The one launched in Indonesia is a dual-SIM phone with a 6.6-inch HD+IPS display powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio A25 SoC coupled with 4GB of RAM.

The phone has a quad rear camera that provides a 16 MP primary sensor and dual shooters each of 2MP. There is also an AI supported sensor on the device which sports a punch-hole display design that also holds an 8MP selfie camera.

Google Pixel 4a leak claims it's finally landing in July - but there may just be one model

The Google Pixel 4a has been rumored for a long time now, and the latest leak suggests it will be delayed until July at the earliest.

According to tech analyst and leaker Jon Prosser, the release date was originally intended for May this year but has now been pushed to July 13. That's a good two months later than originally planned, if Prosser's information is correct.

In his tweet, Prosser also speculated that the Pixel 4a is ready for delivery, but that Google may just be holding back. He says the decision was based on "market analysis", and it's thought the decision was taken due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its overall impact on the phone industry.

He also says there won't be a Google Pixel 4a XL. That's something we've heard before from other sources, but Prosser's information has proven correct in the past, so we're now expecting there to be only one Pixel 4a model.

In another significant claim, Prosser said the Pixel 4a will not support 5G networks. This feature may just be reserved for the flagship Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 5 XL, which are expected to land later this year.

He also claims the Google Pixel 4a will only be available in Just Black and Barely Blue colors, which if true would mean the Purple-ish and Clearly White colors of the Google Pixel 3a won't be options.

Previous leaks and rumors have suggested the Pixel 4a will be equipped with a 5.8-inch OLED display and a thinner bezel than previous Pixel devices.

We've also heard that the chipset inside the phone will be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730, which would be a big upgrade over the Snapdragon 670 that's inside the Pixel 3a.

Other reports have claimed the device will come with 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage, with a 3,080mAh battery and support for 18W fast charging.

OnePlus will disable a filter that lets the 8 Pro see through some materials

The controversial filter could see through certain materials, like thin plastic cases.

OnePlus has started rolling out a software update that temporarily disables the 8 Pro’s controversial Color Filter camera function. In an announcement posted on Chinese social media platform Weibo, the manufacturer said it noticed that the camera may “cause a subtle see-through effect” when it’s in very close proximity to specific materials.

The phone’s Color Filter camera has a filter called Photochrom that uses the phone’s infrared sensors to give a specific effect. Users found that the feature could see through thin or tinted plastic, particularly electronic cases or materials that need to be able to absorb infrared. However, some claimed that it could even see through clothes.

Gizmodo UK tested the feature and found that it could only see electronic components inside devices in specific cases. It worked pretty well in showing what’s inside an Apple TV, but it couldn’t show what’s inside most phones, laptops and mice. And, yes, it didn’t make clothes see-through. Ben Geskin, who reported about the software update, also said that it didn’t see through any of the clothes they tested.

Microsoft is stepping up its Linux game once again. After bringing Linux command line tools to Windows 10 in 2016 and a full-fledged kernel last year, Microsoft announced today that Windows 10 will soon be able to run Linux GUI apps. Yes, that means you'll be able to run the... Linux version of Firefox alongside the Windows version.

The integration makes the open source platform a bit easier to use within Windows. Previously, developers had to set up a third-party server to run Linux GUI apps. Another bonus, Microsoft is also adding support for GPU (graphics processing unit) workflows within its Linux subsystem.

TSMC to build a $12 billion advanced semiconductor plant in Arizona with U.S. government support

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s largest contract semiconductor foundry, said today that it plans to build an advanced chip foundry in Arizona with support from the state and the United States federal government.

The announcement follows a Wall Street Journal report earlier this week that White House officials were in talks with TSMC and Intel to build foundries in the U.S., as part of its effort to reduce reliance on chip factories in Asia. Based in Hsinchu, Taiwan, TSMC provides chip components for many of the world’s largest semiconductor companies and its U.S. clients include Apple and Qualcomm.

The plant, scheduled to start production of chips in 2024, will enable TSMC’s American customers to fabricate their semiconductor products domestically. It will use the company’s 5-nanometer technology and is expected to create 1,600 jobs and have the capacity to produce 20,000 wafers a month.

The U.S.-China trade war, national security concerns, geopolitical unrest and the COVID-19 pandemic have all underscored the shortfalls of relying on foundries located abroad and international supply chains.

The U.S. government has reportedly been in talks with TSMC for months, though one sticking point for the company was the high cost of building a new foundry. TSMC chairman Mark Liu told the New York Times in October that the project would require major subsidies because it is more expensive to operate a factory in the U.S. in Taiwan.

In today’s announcement, TSMC said “U.S. adoption of forward-looking investment policies to enable a globally competitive environment for a leading edge semiconductor technology operation in the U.S. will be crucial to the success of this project.”

The company expects to spend about $12 billion between 2021 and 2029 on the project, with construction slated to begin next year.

TSMC already operates a foundry in Camas, Washington, and has design centers in Austin, Texas and San Jose, California.

PC enthusiasts have flocked to crowdfunding platform Crowdsupply to back an ongoing campaign for a unique new laptop: the MNT Reform.

In a nutshell, the device promises to be open, customizable, hackable and entirely transparent. It's also the only notebook in existence that complies in full with the standards of the Open Source Hardware Association.

At the time of writing, 108 backers have committed more than $124,600 - well over the initial goal of $115,000 and with 35 days left in the campaign.

MNT reform

The project was launched by Germany-based MNT Research GmbH, which has spent the last 18 months attempting to build a laptop that embraces the open source ideology, while remaining as practical as possible.

The result is a laptop that costs $999 (roughly £820/AU$1550) and comes, in the spirit of the first microcomputers, as a kit. If you don't want to pay a premium for assembly, the marketing blurb makes it clear you'll have to build the MNT Reform yourself from the individual boards, display and case parts.

The fully assembled model retails for $1,300 and comes with Debian GNU/Linux 11 on SD card, a printed operator handbook and international power supply (110/230 V), but no Wi-Fi.

An additional $200 gets you a 1TB SSD, Wi-Fi, an mPCIe Wi-Fi card, and a custom Black Piñatex Leather Sleeve (vegan) made in Berlin by fashion designer Greta Melnik.

For the price, you’d be forgiven for expecting a laptop with at least a few bells and whistles, but you'd be wrong. The MNT Reform features 4GB of DDR4 memory, a quad-core ARM Cortex A53 CPU (similar to the Raspberry Pi 3's processor), a 12.5-inch full HD display, five USB ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port and a mechanical keyboard.

Ultimately, it is not a laptop for the average person and its core target audience will likely be fully aware of its limitations. For standard users looking to preserve their privacy, a business laptop with Windows Hello, password manager, a solid antivirus and leading VPN should do just fine.

Netflix video quality remains throttled, to the annoyance of premium users

Earlier this year Netflix announced that it would cut streaming video quality to reduce the amount of bandwidth consumed by its users during the pandemic. With more people working from home than ever before, the company's decision made sense at the time.

However, it has now been almost two months and Netflix customers in Europe and the UK are upset with the streaming service for still delivering throttled HD and Ultra HD video with bit rates at less than 50 percent of their normal capacity in some cases as reported by Variety.

The streaming service's users say that the reduced bit rates are causing noticeable degradation of image quality such as blurring and pixelation on larger televisions.

Netflix users are upset about this because the company charges different subscription rates based on video quality. For instance, its entry-level Basic plan only allows users to stream in SD while its Standard tier provides HD quality and its Premium plan is required to stream in Ultra HD.

Streaming quality issues

At the moment, Netflix does not have a specific timeline in place for when bit rates in Europe will be returned to their original levels. However, in a statement to Variety, a company spokesperson explained that the streaming service will lift bit rate caps once network conditions improve, saying:

“As network conditions improve we will begin lifting the bit-rate caps we introduced in March on a country-by-country basis. In the last two months we’ve added more than four times the normal capacity to deal with the increased demand and help maintain the quality of our service for members.”

This means that Netflix's streaming quality will eventually return to normal. However, Premium users still paying $15.99 a month to watch content in 4K are paying for better video quality which they're not getting. In a blog post back in March, the company's VP of content delivery, Ken Florance made the bit rate caps sound much less worse than they've turned out to be, saying:

“If you are particularly tuned into video quality you may notice a very slight decrease in quality within each resolution. But you will still get the video quality you paid for.”

European Union Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton urged Netflix to throttle bit rates over concerns that ISPs would be strained with millions of people stuck at home. That hasn't been the case though as European internet networks have handled the increase in traffic without major congestion.

Hopefully Netflix begins increasing the bit rates of its streaming video soon or else customers may turn to other streaming services for their content.

Immunai wants to map the entire immune system and raised $20 million in seed funding to do it

For the past two years the founding team of Immunai had been working stealthily to develop a new technology to map the immune system of any patient.

Founded by Noam Solomon, a Harvard and MIT-educated postdoctoral researcher, and former Palantir engineer, Luis Voloch, Immunai was born from the two men’s interest in computational biology and systems engineering. When the two were introduced to Ansuman Satpathy, a professor of cancer immunology at Stanford University, and Danny Wells, who works as a data scientist at the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy the path forward for the company became clear.

“Together we said we bring the understanding of all the technology and machine learning that needs to be brought into the work and Ansu and Danny bring the single-cell biology,” said Solomon.

Now as the company unveils itself and the $20 million in financing it has received from investors including Viola Ventures and TLV Partners, it’s going to be making a hiring push and expanding its already robust research and development activities.

Immunai already boasts clinical partnerships with over ten medical centers and commercial partnerships with several biopharma companies, according to the company. And the team has already published peer-reviewed work on the origin of tumor-fighting T cells following PD-1 blockade, Immunai said.

“We are implementing a complicated engineering pipeline. We wanted to scale to hundreds of patients and thousands of samples,” said Wells. “Right now, in the world of cancer therapy, there are new drugs coming on the market that are called checkpoint inhibitors. [We’re] trying to understand how these molecules are working and find new combinations and new targets. We need to see the immune system in full granularity.”

That’s what Immunai’s combination of hardware and software allows researchers to do, said Wells. “It’s a vertically integrated platform for single cell profiling,” he said. “We go even further to figure out what the biology is there and figure that out in a new combination design for the trial.”

Cell therapies and cancer immunotherapies are changing the practice of medicine and offering new treatments for conditions, but given how complex the immune system is, the developers of those therapies have few insights into how their treatments will effect the immune system. Given the diversity of individual patients variations in products can significantly change the way a patient will respond to the treatment, the company said.

Immunai has the potential to change the way these treatments are developed by using single-cell technologies to profile cells by generating over a terabyte of data from an individual blood sample. The company’s proprietary database and machine learnings tools map incoming data to different cell types and create profiles of immune responses based on differentiated elements. Finally, the database of immune profiles supports the disvovery of biomarkers that can then be monitored for potential changes.

This helps increase the speed in which drugs are developed and brought to market by elucidating their mechanisms of action and resistance.”

Pharmaceutical companies are already aware of the transformational potential of the technology, according to Solomon. The company is already in the process of finalizing a seven-figure contract from a Fortune 100 company, according to Solomon.

One of the company’s earliest research coups was using research to show the way that immune systems function when anti-PD1 molecules are introduced. Typically the presence of PD-1 means that t-cell production is being suppressed. What the research from ImmuneAI revealed was that the response wasn’t happening with T-cells within the tumor. There were new t-cells that were migrating to the tumor to fight it off, according to Wells.

“This whole approach that we have around looking at all of these indications — we believe that the right way and most powerful way to study these diseases is to look at the immune system from the top down,” said Voloch, in an interview. “Looking at all of these different scenarios. From the top, you see these patterns than wouldn’t be available otherwise.”
