Wearable Weapons pioneers the use of technology for a series of interactive collars that are Violet Wands hacked and connected to OS Software to pulse electricity to the beat/pitch of music and can be used for either a sculptural installation or worn by an entertainer.

You might ask ~ What are Violet Wands?

Violet Wands (Violet Rays) are electro medical devices recommended by Edgar Cayce as a healing tool and invented by Nicola Tesla. Violet Wands are also modern, electrical, kink or sexual stimulation toys. They are used for the application of low current, high voltage (min 25 kV to max 65 kV), high-frequency, electricity to the body.

Things went in a different direction. I got the funding I was seeking.

All the clarity I gained and late nights spent refining this proposal was used to receive the

Eyebeam Residency + Stipend that begins September 1st, 2011 through January 2012.

I spoke at the Samsung Store at the Time Warner Center June 13th and this beautiful moment happened when I stood in front of my breastplate that was shown on 8 large screen TVs... and I they became my wings, accidentally. I didn't intend or even know that this is what this necklace would look like at this size. Amazing!

True meditation is, first and foremost, to raise one's mind to a world far superior to one's own little world, to lose oneself in wonder and admiration of it and, then, to reflect that wonder in oneself.

The only purpose of meditation and contemplation is to enable man to reach a higher plane of consciousness which will influence and colour his tastes, judgments and attitudes. Meditation should change something in the way you look, in your smile, your gestures, the way you move; it should give you something new, something subtler.

If a man knows how to model and govern his own thoughts and feelings, he becomes capable of purifying his psyche to such an extent that his imagination becomes transparent and crystal clear, and he begins to 'see' the things of the subtle worlds. At this level, imagination and vision are one.

No one can produce divine works of art if he is not inhabited by Heavenly beings; in order to produce something greater than oneself, one has to transcend ones limitations and journey to higher regions, and there gather divine elements which may be then communicated to others. This, then, is the secret of divine art: to transcend oneself in order to give mankind something better.

The degree of beauty to which an artist can attain, therefore, and which he can express in his work, depends enormously on what kind of person he is. !----Beauty is like a beam of light, it can only be seen in all its brightness if you look at it through a perfectly transparent medium.----! If your medium is tinted, dirty or opaque, the light will appear to be deflected and deformed. THis is why it is so important that an artist should have done a great deal of work on himself before he starts to create; he must become a medium so vibrant and transparent that divine beauty will not be deformed as it passes through him.

What is inspiration? It is an entity which enters a human being, takes possession of him and expresses itself through him. Esoteric Science teaches that inspiration is simply a contact, a communication with a force, an intelligence, an entity belonging to a higher level of reality, which uses us to achieve something that we could never do alone.

When a man rises to higher spheres he absorbs particles from those regions which continue to be active and vibrate within him; in fact they vibrate in such a way as to operate all kinds of transformations in the world. This is the ideal of a true artist, the ideal of an Initiate.

There is one thing you have to realize, and that is that if you are not willing to spend enough time, effort and love to raise yourself to the heights so as to contemplate and comprehend the realities of Heaven you will never bring Heaven down to earth in any form whatsoever. It is not possible to express beauty without first learning how to communicate with beauty. And yet there are a great many artists who think that even though they live in shallow, shoddy lives, they are going to create sublime works of art. No, as long as they do nothing to bring order into their lives and to purify themselves they will simply produce objects of horror; accurate expressions of their own degree of evolution!

The hell of war comes home. In July 2009 Colorado Springs Gazettea published a two-part series entitled “Casualties of War”. The articles focused on a single battalion based at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, who since returning from duty in Iraq had been involved in brawls, beatings, rapes, drunk driving, drug deals, domestic violence, shootings, stabbings, kidnapping and suicides. Returning soldiers were committing murder at a rate 20 times greater than other young American males. A seperate investiagtion into the high suicide rate among veterans published in the New York Times in October 2010 revealed that three times as many California veterans and active service members were dying soon after returning home than those being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. We hear little about the personal hell soldiers live through after returning home.

Osang Gwon - 3D Sculpted Pictures

Korean Artist Osang Gwon's sculptures are made up of hundreds of photographs overlaid on a light core. Gwon takes a two-dimensional art form – the photograph – and fuses it with a three-dimensional art form – sculpture – to create an entirely new type of art. His sculptures redefine the very genre he’s working in; in fact, he’s had to defend their status as sculptures on many occasions.

The method Gwon uses to create these life-size replicas is complicated and can take two months per sculpture. He starts off taking thousands of photographs of his subject from every imaginable angle. He then sculpts a life-size core out of lightweight foam and begins the painstaking process of attaching the photographs, then coating the entire sculpture. The result is somewhat reminiscent of a cubist painting, but with much more depth and character. He doesn’t aim for ultra-reality; he instead wants to portray the way that everything we see is distorted somehow.

He is represented by the Arario Gallery in New York.

Comfort #4 was a light installation by Lang & Baumann for the “Nuit Blanche” 2010 event in Paris. 9 inflated white tubes connected all windows of two floors of the Ecole Elementaire de Belleville in Paris, with each other. Each tube threaded several windows in a random order. The result was a huge chaotic knot in front of the facade. In the night the lights from the inside were shining through the translucent foil.

The exhibition, organized by The Costume Institute, will celebrate the late Alexander McQueen's extraordinary contributions to fashion. From his postgraduate collection of 1992 to his final runway presentation which took place after his death in February 2010, Mr. McQueen challenged and expanded the understanding of fashion beyond utility to a conceptual expression of culture, politics, and identity. His iconic designs constitute the work of an artist whose medium of expression was fashion. Approximately one hundred examples will be on view, including signature designs such as the bumster trouser, the kimono jacket, and the Origami frock coat, as well as pieces reflecting the exaggerated silhouettes of the 1860s, 1880s, 1890s, and 1950s that he crafted into contemporary silhouettes transmitting romantic narratives. Technical ingenuity imbued his designs with an innovative sensibility that kept him at fashion's vanguard.

The gallery will be divided into five showcases of recurring themes :

“The Savage Mind” which will examine his subversion of traditional tailoring and dressmaking practices through displacement and deconstruction.

“Romantic Gothic” will highlight McQueen’s narrative approach to fashion and illuminate his engagement with Romantic literary traditions such as death, decay, and darkness. It will also reveal the main characters of his collections, including emme fatales and anti-heroes such as pirates and highwaymen.

Recycled Seating - Clever Furniture Art

Wow. What inspiring and playful chairs/seating. I love when the useful and the unusal get to be together. Especially this first one, all the broken legs bound together ... I can see putting a round cushion on top and using that one at my table for tea. I did see the metal nickel coach displayed at the MAD museum here in NYC a few months to a year ago. Quite splendid and suprisingly smooth and comfortable.

Even old tires are sometimes creatively recycled and used as furniture. This ottoman looks as though it would be right at home in any den and makes an interesting conversation starter. For cushier seating, innertubes have been used on metal frames to create lounge chairs that make you want to slow down and relax a little.

Old beer and soda cans are abundant and often used in stylish design. To create the seating ensemble above, cans were crushed and formed into chairs and side tables. The slick metal sofa is actually constructed of thousands of nickels. While the hundreds of dollars worth of nickels could have still been spent, this amazing artwork is worth far more than the monetary value of the coins that went into it.

Between Heaven and Hell in Contemporary Japanese Art

Bye Bye Kitty!!! is a radical departure from recent Japanese exhibitions. Moving far beyond the stereotypes of kawaii and otaku culture, Japan Society’s show features sixteen emerging and mid-career artists whose whose paintings, objects, photographs, videos, and installations meld traditional styles with challenging visions of Japan’s troubled present and uncertain future.

Chiharu Shiota (1972– )

Chiharu Shiota has lived in Berlin since 1996. This relocation has provided her with a necessary distance from the vivid and poignant memories of childhood and youth that still fuel much of her work. Dialogue with Absence explores the theme of the individual self and its ties to earthly or genetic origins through a wedding dress pierced by catheters connected to pumps that create an animated circuit of red liquid. The whole piece becomes a body, an umbilical support of linked veins and nerves that takes on a life of its own.

Manabu Ikeda (1973– )

Manabu Ikeda works in ink and acrylic paint applied by pen onto paper, creating large works teeming with the details of lives that are socially and metaphysically linked. In Existence, the central tree of life was suggested by the vast fig trees that straddle the walls of Khmer temples at Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Ark shows a huge, rotting urban hulk in the middle of an ocean, expressing the struggle between man and nature and between civilization and entropy. In History of Rise and Fall, nature, history, and human presence coexist within the confines of an ancient castle.

Kohei Nawa (1975– )

Kohei Nawa’s work has developed out of an awareness of the spiritual intensity and power of natural forms or structures. PixCell Deer was constructed by covering the animal with a skin of plastic beads “that is sufficient to erase any deep sense of the objects and even the meanings and symbols they usually possess.” The effect is shimmering yet disorienting: the different-sized beads act like lenses, amplifying both the exterior gallery and what is caught inside.

Tomoko Shioyasu (1981– )

Tomoko Shioyasu’s work is based on the traditional art of paper cutting, which she transforms into minimal sculptural forms. The delicate white membranes of Vortex are concerned with reference rather than illusion, space rather than image, and with modulating flows of energy. Asked about what she regarded as content in her work, Shioyasu replied, “Simply nature itself, particularly that which has existed over an extended period of time—rocks, trees, water channels, cells. I want to look into the essence and roots of life, making works that focus on these basic forms.”

The Incredible Paper Cut “Vortex”

“Vortex” is the latest art installation by Tomoko Shioyasu; her work was presented in a group show at the Japan Society Gallery in New York City. Tomoko’s technique is all about “overlapping cuts in large, wide sheets of paper using utility knives, soldering-iron works, in which she creates images by melting holes in special synthetic paper, and drawings, using acrylics or charcoal.” [1]

Notes about the artist (from bio published at ByeByeKitty!):

Devastatingly Beautiful Art Exhibit - ShearGlory at Devotion Gallery in Williamsburg - Friday, March 11.

Tonight, I have my joint show at Devotion Gallery in Williamsburg - Brooklyn, NY. Super enthused to be emerging and showing here in NYC... I hung the show Wednesday night with Elena Ailes (and Jon Kopp.) There are 3 sets of brand new razor and zip tie wearable sculptures, 3 giclee print series, 1 large (confiscated from airport security) scissors breast plate/necklace and 2 scissor bracelet sculptures (all for sale). Colorful, playful and deadly. I've cut myself a fair bit during this preparation time, but I LOVE working with the razor blades. My book restoration artist friend, Sophia Kramer gave me all the recycled blades from a grant project she did while working for the MET Museum here in NYC. What a perfect gift from a friend who knows me well!

Last Saturday, Jon and I did a photo shoot on our roof with me wearing the white set of collars. A true collaboration ~ my art, costume and body while he took the pictures and suggested movements/angles and then I cropped and edited them in photoshop. Here are the dramatic results.

This is a pink zip tie and razor collar I made a made a few weeks ago and then photographed myself against my blue bathrrom wall.

This is the breast plate/ extra-large necklace (or tail feathers) made with confiscated scissors and zip ties.

I will be updating my website soon with these and other new images... and a newer artist statement. The refinement is a never-ending process... alchemical really.

ShearGlory is as sharp as it is soft. Carrie Mae’s sculptures and couture costumes are made of confiscated scissors from airport security and other potentially dangerous recycled objects. She shares this space with artist Elena Ailes, creator of felted storm clouds, quiet photograms and pencil drawings. The two artists share an aesthetic language, full of totemic mystery, circular logic and beauty.

Opening March 11th, 2011 7-9pm. Until April 3rd, 2011.

Greatly inspired by Hindu yantras and Tibetan mandala sand paintings, Carrie Mae Rose has come to believe that just like a pure resonant note shatters a glass, a visual imprint of beauty and perfection changes the viewer. Her circular sculptures hold an essence of the macrocosm and microcosm, bringing harmony on an archetypal level.

Elena’s newest work is of felted cloud-like structures. Grey, black and white wool are blended together to create ‘storm clouds’, each one distinct and perfect, stitched together into larger tapestries and embellished with embroidery. These tapestries are intended to be low hanging skies within the gallery itself; hung low, manipulating the viewer into a hunched or stooped position. This body of work mixes the visual language of science and craft. It is informed by the most personal struggles and desires, as well as arcing philosophical inquiries and the purity of form, light and space.

Carrie Mae Rose is a sculptor and interactive installation artist creating on the convergence of fine art, fashion, technology and performance. She builds and make sculptures and wearable items out of confiscated scissors from airport security and other potentially dangerous recycled objects. It is her vision to create a series of devastatingly beautiful couture costumes that will soon include sound and movement interactive through embedded and interactive technology and electrical currents.

For over 10 years, she has been working with the theme of personal and national protection and how it is manifesting in our current cultural epoch. Asking questions such as: What brings people a feeling of safety and protection? ...does armor and protective clothing and do security measures at airports? ...does meditation and spiritual connection?

Greatly inspired by Hindu yantras and Tibetan mandala sand paintings, Carrie Mae Rose has come to believe that just like a pure resonant note shatters a glass, a visual imprint of beauty and perfection changes the viewer. It is also her belief that just as a flower's petals open and reflect celestial realms in their vibrant colors, particular shapes and scents - so fashion and costumes are our personal human petals, reflecting and holding our own individual archetypes.

Bio:
Carrie Mae was born, in 1975, on 100 acres of land in rural West Virginia, in a log cabin built by her folks. She resided there until she was a toddler and then moved north to small-town Ravenna & Kent, Ohio. At 19, life adventures took her to Prescott, Arizona where the desert beauty awoke her creativity. Carrie Mae began working with desert growing agave plant, beads and endless circle forms. For many years she sought secluded swimming holes, spread into desert vistas, slept under dazzling skies, danced beneath glorious sunsets and played with her dog, Amazing Grace.

Carrie Mae began exhibiting her artwork in Prescott, Jerome, Winslow, and Phoenix, Arizona before moving to New York City in 2007. Carrie Mae’s dynamic background places her in a unique position to blend together fine art, performance, fashion and technology. She studied and performed Butoh with Diego Pinon and acrobatic stilt walking with The Carpetbag Brigade Physical Theater Company. She assisted wearable artist, Latifa Medjdoub in San Francisco and jewelry designer Joomi Lim, in New York City. Her recent studies in the field of interactive technology bring a breadth of understanding for building new multi-media costumes and installations. Carrie Mae Rose holds a M.F.A. in Design and Technology from Parsons The New School for Design in New York City, and a B.A. from Prescott College in Prescott, Arizona. She currently lives and works in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY.

Artist statement:
In my work I create physical structures that allow an idea to organize itself within a specific form. I allow the natural patterns of the materials used and the physical act of ‘making’ to inform the evolution of the work. I like to think of my work as a conversation between two systems, the first of which is myself as an organism with a specific history and set of values, the second system being a set of physical limitations, rules and materials that have been decided beforehand. My motivation as a maker--and, well, as a person--is to impart ‘of myself’; to challenge the parts of my intellect or spirit that seem tight or underused, to provide a place for wonder, play or exploration for viewers and collaborators.

My newest work is of felted cloud-like structures. Grey, black and white wool are blended together to create ‘storm clouds’, each one distinct and perfect. I hand stitch together these clouds into larger tapestries and further embellish them with embroidery. These tapestries are intended to be low hanging skies within the gallery itself; hung low, manipulating the viewer into a hunched or stooped position. Clouds and light are the evolving features of our daily skies. I have begun to explore how my manufactured clouds interact with light. As a record these interactions, I’ve started cataloging each of my felted clouds as a cyanotype photogram.

This body of work mixes the visual language of science and craft. It is informed by the most personal struggles and desires, as well as arcing philosophical inquiries and the purity of form, light and space.

Bio:
Elena Ailes was born on the fourth floor of Presbyterian hospital in Albuquerque in September in 1981. Elena’s mother reports being unable to reach the television mounted at the ceiling, and thus spent much of her labor watching reruns of Kung-Fu. Simultaneously, thousands of miles away, Simon and Garfunkel were performing at a free concert in Central Park attended by half a million people. This was the first concert they performed together in a decade, overcoming conflicts in their friendship and artistic process.

Elena received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico in 2004. She had the great honor of working closely with photographers and artists such as Patrick Nagatani, Jim Stone and Joyce Neimanas. Elena has continued to work in the arts as a curator, exhibit designer and production assistant for a number of nationally and internationally exhibiting artists. She has also been working in the wine industry as a Sommelier since 2010. She recently relocated from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Brooklyn, NY. Although she is thrilled with the move, this is probably why she keeps making work about grey skies.

Sweet Smart Snapshots/idea!! Martin Usborne is a London-based photographer who's most recent exhibition is “MUTE: The Silence of Dogs in Cars” - Such presence and feeling these animals portray.

this is what he says about these images on his website:

I was once left in a car at a young age.

I don't know when or where or for how long, possibly at the age of four, perhaps outside Tesco's, probably for fifteen minutes only. The details don't matter. The point is that I wondered if anyone would come back. It seems trivial now but in a child's mind it is possible to be alone forever.

Around the same age I began to feel a deep affinity with animals - in particular their plight at the hands of humans. I remember watching TV and seeing footage of a dog being put in a plastic bag and being kicked. What appalled me most was that the dog could not speak back. It's muteness terrified me.

I should say that I was a well-loved child and never abandoned and yet it is clear that both these experiences arose from the same place deep inside me: a fear of being alone and unheard. Perhaps this is a fear we all share at some level, I am not sure.

The images in this series explore that feeling, both in relation to myself and to animals in general. The camera is the perfect tool for capturing a sense of silence and longing: the shutter freezes the subject for ever and two layers of glass are placed between the viewer and the viewed: the glass of the lens, the glass of the picture frame and, in this instance, the glass of the car window further isolates the animal. The dog is truly trapped.

When I started this project I knew the photos would be dark. What I didn't expect was to see so many subtle reactions by the dogs: some sad, some expectant, some angry, some dejected. It was as if upon opening up a box of grey-coloured pencils I was surprised to see so many shades inside.

I hope that these pictures are engaging and perhaps a little amusing. I want to show that there is life in the dark places within us.

I will stop writing now and you can stop reading. Words can only get us so far. After all, we are all animals.

Dorian Gourg's images hold a particular abstract feeling that connects me to my own multitude of desert experiences and they also remind me of Yantra like meditation symbols. I like them. This is what he says in his own words -------> Q: What is the Native American influence in the project? A: It came from the parallel between the visual aspect of New York and the patterns designed by Native Americans. I also thought about Native Americans, and about killing the people who worshiped nature to build an artificial world instead.

Remedios Varo Uranga (December 16 1908 - October 8, 1963) - she was a Spanish-Mexican, para-surrealist painter. I do not know the names of all these paintings.. I googled her and found these below.

"A More Perfect Union" looks at American self-identity through the medium of online dating services. Culling data from over twenty online dating sites, the work is organized according to the same heuristics as the U.S. Census, sorting dating profiles by Congressional District and subjecting the imagery and text to statistical analysis.

Hunger Pains is a photo series by artist Ted Sebarese. Each of the model’s clothing is made entirely of real food.

This artichoke gown was designed by Daniel Feld and Wesley Nault of Project Runway fame. It took over 6 hours to finish (the model stood the entire time while they attached each, individual leaf).

WOW - is all I can say! Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin's Hövding bicycle helmet works like an airbag, inflating immediately before impact from a shawl-like collar worn around the neck. The name Hövding translates to Chieftan. after the headdress-like form the helmet evokes when open.

In 2005 Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin were industrial design students at Lund University. At the time, a Swedish law had just gone into effect requiring helmets for all cyclists up to age 15, and there was talk of extending the law to cover adults as well. Haupt and Alstin observed that no one was interested in wearing bicycle helmets, and their survey results indicated it was because helmets were seen as bulky, ugly, cumbersome and unstylish, among other reasons.

Haupt and Alstin responded with a weighted collar embedded with movement sensors and a gas generator; the kind of thing design students sketch without having any idea how it might actually work. Kudos to the duo, pictured below, for working it out. After more than five years in the making, their Chieftan concept is now going into production, with a twelve-person company built around it.
